    Nice work Tom. I have trick you may want to try until you get those rollers made for your steady rest that the Ole Man taught me. What he does is finds an old worm out piece of emery cloth and he wraps that around the shaft or tube in your case with the smooth side toward the tube and the sanded side toward the brass pads on the steady. He makes the piece long enough so he can put the ends of the cloth between the opening of the steady and closes it down on it to keep the cloth from spinning with the tube. I should have added he puts an ample amount of anti seize or grease or something slick between the cloth and the tube. The cloth between the brass pads and the tube with the line on it will glide and won’t let the brass ruin your tube surface. He uses this technique all the time when doing TGP pump shafting.
    Hope this make since if not I can send a picture.
    Keep the videos coming!!

    Nice project Tom. You won't regret putting rollers on your steady rest. I wish I had done it sooner.

    Good solution Tom - good use of existing material. I don't think there was anything to gain by going a more complex route just to avoid using dissimilar materials. Solid answer and nice implementation. 5K subscribers won't be long! Good luck and all the best.

    They worked out fine Tom. Always good when you can use material you already have in stock. Can't think of any better way of mating steel to aluminium. Bolts will give a strong joint. I like the dolly to move long tubes around. Not sure if Mr Khaos did? Cheers Tom. ATB Nobby

      @hilltopmachineworks2131  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there Nobby. Those dollys come in handy for long material that won't fit through the door long wise. As I get older I need to carry material less and use carts and dollys instead of my back.

    don't know about others but when your videos start and you Say Hay Every Body . I findded my self saying Hi Tom just a thing another job well done steel to aluminum is not a good combination at the best of times i think you did really well maybe only thing could have bin a little better a looser fit betwen the one you bolted on as it won't take long for it to rust and the two will never be parted don't know if there would be a reason to take it apart once installed but just think over things any way give the Doggie A big o'll pat from us Cheers Tom

      He was. The post driver with the extended stud is working perfectly for him. He also said he would have another camera mount order for me soon.

    G'day Tom. We get caught with the longer tube or solid round in the chuck, & with small initial cuts we try to get the ends to the sizes we require, without the part screwing out.
    The overall job turned out really Great, Your electrition should be well pleased.
    Or he can always double them up as miniature Truck Stacks 😅😅😅 ( alloy exhaust virtical pipe ) 😅😊

      @hilltopmachineworks2131  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Ted. It was a bit hairy there trying to finish up the long tube. Working on modifying the steady rest as we speak. Rollers will help, but I can't do much about the egg shaped tubing.

    Enjoyed the video/build, watching you wear gloves on the lathe made me think of my buddy Chui who got sucked in due to gloves, pls be safe and drop the gloves….Curious, did your bandsaw cut the tubing that crooked?

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Chuck. I hear ya on the gloves. I don't really like wearing them around moving machinery, but I just get so many metal splinters in my hands and fingers constantly. The bandsaw did cut it that bad, but it is not the saws fault. I had the stock support adjusted too low and I did not notice it till after the cuts. I can thank my concrete guys for the unevenness of my slab.

    Trying to turn non-DOM tubing can really suck. It's usually only sort of round. Then it can spring all over the place as you release built in stresses.

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Robert. It was a bit hairy turning the long piece with the steady in place. The tube was definitely not round.
