Getting a new ball screw adapted to the Defiance Boring Mill

  • With a little work the ball screw is all done and mounted in the mill and works perfectly. It took some turning work on the Jet and Monarch lathes and some drilling and tapping on the Excello mill to get it all together. Really pleased to be making some progress and now on to getting the table and tailstock back on. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

    You don't see people using expanding mandrels very often. This project definitely has its challenges. Nice work, Tom.

      Thanks Robert. Yeah I don't grab for the mandrels that often. They are handy for some things.

    Nice work - that didn’t seem to have much trouble with the hard material. I appreciate you showing details on the insert type and grade - that kind of detailed info is very interesting to me. 👍👍👍

      Thanks Stuart. I was a bit worried I would have some trouble with the screw being so hard, but thank goodness it worked out.

    Nice work Tom. Another step closer to getting the borer up and going. They are very universal machines. I worked a Union Borer for a number of years in a previous life and loved the challenge of finding new machining techniques the thing was capable off. You will enjoy playing with it.

      Thanks Cam. Ironically I was looking at a Union mill but the distance it was to get it made it too expensive. That is cool. I may pick your brain then on some projects.

    I bet that chip that hit your hand was hot AF. LOL! Nice to see that machine running. I bet it cranking it by hand is super smooth, too.

      LOL. It was and stuck to my skin too. Those are the worst. Man is it smooth and so easy to turn by hand.

    Great result Tom . Like you say , not much room under their ! If the bolts give trouble , you may have to make a fitted bolt . Cheers 👍

    Very good solution to join the ends to the lead screw. Came out really well Tom. I seem to have the same problem as you on projects, where I have to make, fix or repair something before I can go forward. All adds to the fun. Cheers Nobby

    G'day Tom. Certainly had your work cut out for you. Bushes, mandrels, yep you did the lot, but best of all the bed moved side to side with ease.
    Great job so far, will look forward in seeing this Monster in action.

    Nice result, you could use roll pins. Tap a smaller one thru the id of the bigger pin. Cheers.

    Hey Tom. nice solution, nice those hard materials. I actually expected the core to be soft. learned that again😅

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was worried a bit about how hard the screw was and if I would be able to cut it. I am glad the ceramics were up to the task. I really did not want to heat up the ends and anneal them.

    • @DoMetalStuff
      @DoMetalStuff 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hilltopmachineworks2131 I understand that it can distort. and the ceramic one is often a good choice. I have used standard CCMT inserts a few times myself. They burn away. My supplier then told me that the cast iron insert was a better choice. because ceramic is carcinogenic. I have yet to experience that. The material I have to machine is 42 CrMo 4 hardened to somewhere between 60 / 65 rockwell.

    Superb upgrade Tom, enjoyed the machining, zero backlash. Will you be doing the same with the other cross slide big feed screw while you've got the machine in pieces? It'll only take you half as long to do it now. Cheers Tony

    I did the same a few days ago for a long shaft, I've got the same machine but it has a whachecon badge on it. I found that outboard spi does end has a taper, might wanna check yours

    I know you didn't have much experience with the original screw but can you feel much difference in how easy it drags the table with the ball screw?

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since the original screw was in such sad shape I never messed with it. But if I had to guess it would have not been anywhere near as smooth as the ball screw set up is now.
