    I didn't realize how cool my dad was when I was a little girl. He was a pianist who had all of Sergio Mendes records. I would listen along with him. I still to this day, love Lani Hall and Karen's amazing vocals. This cover of Fool On The Hill is magical.

    • @zdogg8
      @zdogg8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The studio versions were all Lani with her doubling or tripling her voice, IOW, no Karen. There have been many great singers in Brazil 66,77,88,99 etc but nobody had the impact and sound signature as did Lani, perhaps not a stupendous singer overall, i.e.: as per operatic standard or distinctive song stylist, but the EXACT right sound for Brazil 66. Warmth, color, flexibility, precision and just the right amount of inflection and her non native Portuguese was excellent.

      Ricky F ~ Well... not completely. Although Hall was referred to as the main or lead singer in the group, and indeed sung most of the lead vocals on the first two Brasil '66 albums, many of the vocals were performed in unison with Janis Hansen, then later Karen Phillip. In fact it's Hansen singing the lead voice on their version of The Look of Love, a popular hit for the group. A prospect that Hansen would receive equal billing with Hall in the near future was unfortunately dashed, when in late '67, Mendes dismissed all members of Brasil 66 over financial disputes, and Mendes' autocracy. Of course the group was reformed soon after, with new personnel, and Hall returning to the fold.

    It was 1968 when I first heard this song and several others from Sergio Mendez' Brazil 66 while stationed in Okinawa with the Air Force. We were on our first of 2, 6 months tours of duty there, repairing B-52's, KC135, RC135, WC135 . After a couple of months several guys bought stereos, from the shops in Koza, that played reel-to-reel tapes. Brazil 66 was one of the albums passed around and copied. Beautiful warm weather, beautiful nights, beautiful coral reefs, beautiful Okinawan countryside, beautiful people, great friends, and this beautiful music. Our job was to repair sheetmetal on the bombers & tankers between their bombing missions to Vietnam. When I hear this music I shut my eyes and I am transported back to those days. Very very special time in my life made even more special with the music of Sergio Mendez, & Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.

    [from an old drummer] .. Aside from the stunning, incredible, sexy vocal and the gorgeous instrumentation with strings, flute and harp, Sergio Mendes does the most sublime and understated things with time signatures of anyone, IMO. In mainstream popular music it seems most songs that deviate from straight 4/4 are usually one of the more typical times; for example 1-2 'cut' time, or a 3/4 waltz-ish, or bluezy 6/8 or 12/8. And the time signature stays put. Rarely changes. The number of bars might vary but not the time itself. It's rare that a mainstream popular song will venture from one of these comfortable standard times. Examples: Take 5 (jazz) and some of the prog stuff, notably Yes and Rush, but again it's rare that one of these odd time signature songs get widespread public listening. Usually the odd time stuff is more of a 'niche' thing amongst aficionados of the particular genre. And you know right away that it's an 'odd' time. It's very apparent. No foot tapping allowed.
    As far as Sergio's interpretations,
    McCartney's lovely Fool on the Hill is straight conventional 4/4. Sergio's version begins with a single conga hit (cool) on the last beat of the previous measure which I guess is the "6" because the verses and intro are consistent 6/4. (unusual) And we don't mean 6/8, that's a whole different thing; and quite common in blues and ballads. Sergio shifts the chorus to 4/4 and then effortlessly slips back into 6/4 for the verses again. Unique.
    Paul Simon's original of Scarborough Fair is kind of a quick 3/4 with larger groupings that make it feel like segments of 6/4 and 9/4. Sergio basically changes the song from a waltz to a kind of a hybrid bossa nova (if I have to give it a name); from a 3 pulse to a 4 pulse. Sergio's version is 4/4. It even starts again with a single conga hit on the '4'. (again, cool) The intro strings are an 8th triplet thing that kind of cuts across the 4 pulse which is just groovy as hell. He also tosses in phrasing that tends to cut across the bar line and obscure the time signature for a few moments ("Remember me to the one who lives there. He once was a true love of mine..", especially the final iteration starting around th-cam.com/video/3HjWxjF13Gs/w-d-xo.html He does it unobtrusively. Count it out. It's very cool.
    And you never even realize that Sergio is playing with the time signatures on either song. They just flow like they were born that way. And remember that neither of these great 'covers' are his original songs and both of the original versions are well known and firmly cemented into the public ear. Try counting them out. You'll see what I mean. Brilliant, just brilliant. And brave.

      Hey Blujay, its complex for me to understand, but I can see that even by the technical musical aspects, this arrangement is wonderful;

      Ironically, the Beatles themselves were another group who liked to mess around with time signatures (often unintentionally I think). Even songs that seem straightforward like here come the sun, have at least three different time signatures at different points.

    Hearing this brings me right back to my childhood in southern California. I was 9 years old, riding in the back seat of my dad's Rambler station wagon, windows rolled down, hot dry air in my face, trying to make sense of the words... which were so confusing to me at the time. Thank you so much for uploading this great footage, really superb, first rate. David H.

    In the 1960s as I traveled with my family from Oklahoma to the central valley of California and I being about 13 this song carried me alone route 66. The ultimate road trip. I found myself in this song with it's beauty an the vast possibilities of what my life ahead could be, I listen to it often an it takes me back to that very special time in my life.
