1. Simple gear (wide lens, microphone on the top) 2. Changing locations and the way to filming will improve engaging 3. Simple editing because of the way of filming. (make a lot of different shots) 4. If you don`t change the location you should make a zoom 5. Plan the video is the key. It makes viewer more engaged and speed up the process of making a video. Notes like this just help me learn more effective.
@@thekillerdevful no they aren't. You aim for usually lenses that are as wide as 24mm and 28mm, and the other end you extend as you wish. On APS-C you go down to 10-14mm and that's very easy and cheap. It's even cheaper on the APS-C end. I have my 70D and 10-18mm for about 400 euros. You don't need fast lenses.
He actually said in an interview I saw that he really DOESNT plan. He has an idea, rolls with it, will walk away at times and come back. Edits purely chronological, doesnt color grade, goes through catalogs of music and uses it as a crutch in certain areas. The way he does it is purely by his instinct, to others it seems planned and the interviewer asked him all this stuff about how he does it and he shot down all preconceptions the person had.
Be doesn't because he's been doing it for like every day for years, it's like a musician doing improv on his instrument after practicing for years, it feels like an instinct to them. He doesn't have to think about it too much, just go with it
I’ve heard other vloggers comment that when Casey showed up his video “was basically done before they started filming” because he plans his shot list so well… so I believe he does at least some planning, just no detailed script which I am definitely a fan of
Thanks, great breakdown! The only thing I would add - do not keep your camera at auto - keep it at Shutter Priority, for example 1/60 for 30fps shot. That way you will always have consistent motion blur, but camera will automatically adjust aperture and ISO.
Really helpful observations, Omar! My big takeaway is your emphasis on planning … Casey‘s videos look so spontaneous b/c he tosses a lot of creativity into a planned framework. Planning the overall framework of our videos keeps us from diluting effectiveness. I love the thought that goes something like “come prepared, and be prepared for spontaneity.” 😊
I have always been impressed with the amount of effort and time Casey puts into even the most simplest scene in his vlogs. nstead of one shot of him talking and has like 5 different shots. I know he puts in a ton of work to get those all done. Great video by the way. Appreciate you sharing this.
I pretty much have the exact same setup and it just works. I'm the same way with my music setup. I'm a brand new YT channel, so it's imperative that I can just walk into my studio, hit record, and go.
Thanks man for the video! I can only imagine being a Casey and getting millions of views after I upload the video. But unfortunately, I'm not Casey so I have to find other ways and use Famester as well.
I love how this video tells you to change locations to keep the audience engaged as he tells us from a chair with no location changes. Haha. Love thinkmedia. It’s been a big help to my channel.
I love how I’ve reached the point as an editor where I knew the edits Casey did in the clips you showed without needing the explanation. Also, I saw that Casey sat still in the transition to the “other camera” (same camera) so that it looked like he literally looked at another camera, I normally do that when I forget a word and have to pull out the script from my pocket lol
Omg PREACH love your concise videos, I'm a slammed TH-camr with no time for bs and can't stand 2 hour megathon live streams that I WISH I had time for but what real youtuber has that kind of time and I just love your concise useful videos so now when I see your face I know to click and your video won't make me mad with a bunch of chitchat. Thank you SO MUCH for being awesome.
One of the other things Casey does (and he's talked about this) that is counterintuitive is using so many static shots. His videos are dynamic for all the other reasons you mentioned, but if you observe you'll see that he often uses no camera movement. It both simplifies his workflow and keeps us engaged without trickery.
Super helpful info. Casey also must use a lot of B/roll for his vlogs that he's probably got stored in his hard drives. But thanks for the heads up. His vlogs are the most immersive to watch I think.
The crazy thing about Casey’s vlogs though…the magic of Casey is that *especially* for his daily vlogs…I’m convinced it is mainly off the cuff. Fairly sure he’s actually said that 🤔. Like he just has a very natural ability to tell stories and compose interesting sequences on the fly. Like he may have an idea in his head but for those daily’s that’s mainly his innate skills as a filmmaker 👀?..
I agree, where he had a leg up for creating content. he was naturally busy running a business at the time (beme), kept him traveling, moving from location to location throughout the day which provided the opportunity for interesting content and interesting moments to happen during transit. AND location, there is always something interesting happening in NYC. You can walk out of your front door and there is movement.noise and stories waiting to be told everywhere. Those two things alone make it easy to create content without a plan.
This is a great video! Extremely helpful, simple, and a brilliant insight into nailing vlogging! I am going to check this blokes channel out. I need to use many of his techniques.
One thing for sure I’ve been getting better at is continuing filming when I mess up, makes filming go faster and gives me more confidence knowing it’s not a one take and it’s a wrap
One of the reasons Casey is so good is that he DOES do RANDOM content. But? He's so good at it, he makes you feel like it's not random. He's the Stand By Me of YT vloggers, hands down.
so how does he film while skateboarding under that bridge, is he using a drone for the top down view while holding the remote for the board in his hand or is that the remote for the drone?
Just found your channel. You give helpful information in a easy to understand way. I have now subscribed to your channel. Going to look at some of your previous videos.
THANKS so much for the video recording ideas! I would love to see recording ideas and suggestions for shooting DIY tutorials. I am a DIY home decor and furniture upcycler. I get lost in the actual project and fresh ideas for recording the process would be amazing! I hope you consider making a video teaching how to shoot this kind of video!
Would love a video on planning a video like this. Like would you be thinking and mapping out every single scene and shot list? I feel like Casey is very much intuitive with it.
Great video as always Omar. Do you have any videos about copyright? Did you have to ask Casey for permission to use his footage? How does it work on TH-cam?
Hi, I use the zoom effect in my videos but I record in 4k, and after apply the zoom the image loose quality. Im a amateur photographer and is really important for me get a good quality image. Im been thinking to start to record in 5k, with my gopro10, but im not sure if Davinci resolve can downgrade the speed of the edition, and the time of the render on the final video file. Do you think will be a good solution record in 5k using a gopro camera? 🤔
Are vlogs making a comeback… Maybe I’ll speak on that in my channel. Also is not easy coming up with “spots” from where to record… it’s ideas you make on the fly and setting up the camera for each spot can take hours.
This is funny because Casey has said how he doesn't write or plan, and that he "writes on editing". I think that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to make movies - and probably he's good at story telling because he cut his teeth doing movies before youtube and phones, so he learned "the hard way".
I have simpler gear: a phone with a high quality camera and a cheap selfie stick (or not so expensive 1.8 meters tripod for more eye-level shots). Believe me, for amateurish vloging this is enough. Two years ago I bought a gimbal because I thought that this will help me to have better shots. I have not been using it very much - static shots combined with spontaneity of hendheld is absolutely enough. I even stopped using external mic because the phone 's mic has great sound quality. The only thing I am missing though is that I do not use establishing shots.
You definitely had me thinking about how simple it can be, with a little thought, planning and effort. I’m definitely getting a wide angle lens for my iPhone now and planning shots in advance to encourage longer watch time
Encouraging Vlogging... after you made a video saying that "Vlogging Is Dead" 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ However, I agree on formatting your vlogs to tell a story, I think most of mine are like that but, my problem is consistency😔😔!! It'll happen @ some point 🤷🏾♂️🤣

By the way, I just shot a bunch of B roll for my next video. Great tips.
Going to change camera angles. Like the turn to the left idea. Going to start talking. Stop change depth of field or angle and start again.
K.I.S.S

So good!! Change your scenery! :)
My takeaway is that you are awesome
1. Simple gear
(wide lens, microphone on the top)
2. Changing locations and the way to filming will improve engaging
3. Simple editing because of the way of filming. (make a lot of different shots)
4. If you don`t change the location you should make a zoom
5. Plan the video is the key. It makes viewer more engaged and speed up the process of making a video.
Notes like this just help me learn more effective.
Thank you. Saved me the time of watching the video. The video was bloated and slow.
Thanks.
@@AllisonRoadWest I liked video. I even will rewatch it in a week.
The only problem is, a wide lens that's not prime like that, it's super expensive in any setup (Nikon, Sony, Fuji, etc) lol
@@thekillerdevful no they aren't. You aim for usually lenses that are as wide as 24mm and 28mm, and the other end you extend as you wish. I've done this in some of my vlogs. It does get super easy when it's editing time. Gotta get back to those cuts again. Great video Omar
This is a really informative video. Simple is almost always better. This video and content hit the nail on the head. Thanks fella.
0:14 the way he makes his vlogs is not that difficult.....until you try it 😊😊😊
I have always been impressed with the amount of effort and time Casey puts into even the most simplest scene in his vlogs. nstead of one shot of him talking and has like 5 different shots. I know he puts in a ton of work to get those all done. Great video by the way. Appreciate you sharing this.
My take away is emphasis on planning which is super important in any content creation. Thanks !!
This came out at the perfect time because I’ve been on a Casey binge
Beating the horse with the donkey, I LOL'D - Enjoyed this Omar, thanks dude! Story is KING :)
I pretty much have the exact same setup and it just works. I'm the same way with my music setup. I'm a brand new YT channel, so it's imperative that I can just walk into my studio, hit record, and go.
Thanks for this video! More explanations about Casey than in Casey's movie class!!
Great breakdown of Casey's process! Great video!
This is giving me some really good ideas about how to switch it up with camera angles. Also thx for putting the links to the camera gear
You guys are awesome. 🤘🏻
Well summarised! Thank you so much 🎉🎉
Thanks man for the video! I can only imagine being a Casey and getting millions of views after I upload the video. But unfortunately, I'm not Casey so I have to find other ways and use Famester as well.

Love thinkmedia. It’s been a big help to my channel.
Omar (the best) reviewing Casey (the best). love to see it!
Casey Neistat is one of a kind. He makes videos totally amusing to watch.
Once you click his vid, addiction starts!
Really inspiring, thanks for the breakdown 👍🏻🙏🏻
My one big takeaway that’s easy to implement. Change scenery more, even if it’s just walking down the street
Casey does include flashy transitions, and knows how to make regular transitions looks like he's filmed by others. He's a master at that.
@@spirittravels. without a doubt! I feel like I know a lot but that by watching his work I can learn even more.
That's the best way to actually realize how far you've come ☺️☺️

Casey is so dynamic in his vlogs
"Beating the head of the horse with the donkey" is my favourite thing of the day!
One of the other things Casey does (and he's talked about this) that is counterintuitive is using so many static shots. His videos are dynamic for all the other reasons you mentioned, but if you observe you'll see that he often uses no camera movement. «Beating the horse with the donkey» is my new favourite phrase … also, you forgot to include the kit list of mr. neistat :)
a favorite aussie vlogger of mine, keis one, does this kind of story telling in his travel vlogs
Thanks for this. Casey's vlogs are like a class in itself
Appreciate this breakdown, I am just getting started and keeping it simple is the best way for me to create content right now.
Thank you this was helpful 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻 VRA Fam
Love this because I feel like my attempts to vlog were so lame and not engaging enough
This was super helpful breakdown, thank you 🙏
No horses were beaten with donkeys during the making of this video. Great breakdown - thanks Omar!
Omar, I don't see a link to Casey's gear. 😔
Thanks for this …really helps
Really helpful, Omar!
Super helpful info.

Thanks Omar, you pointed out a bunch of subtle things Casey does, i hadn't picked up on.
One thing for sure I’ve been getting better at is continuing filming when I mess up, makes filming go faster and gives me more confidence knowing it’s not a one take and it’s a wrap
Thanks for breaking that down Omar! Very helpful!
definately a duH video.. but another great video. Think Media always delivers

Great suggestions. Simple and easy. Thanks.
This is great bro thank you💪🏽
wide angle lenses up close gives me a brutal EGG HEAD lol.
I want to be a midwestern old lady Casey! He has a new fan! 👋🏽. Learning lots from him.
great job bro... Thanks for making it really simple for us to copy a great vlogging techniques
so how does he film while skateboarding under that bridge, is he using a drone for the top down view while holding the remote for the board in his hand or is that the remote for the drone?
Love these ideas and the breakdown!!!

Great Points ❗️
Would love a video on planning a video like this. Like would you be thinking and mapping out every single scene and shot list? I feel like Casey is very much intuitive with it.
he edits like a Jason Bourne movie!!! all cut scenes with great editing which makes it seamless to the human eye!!
Great video as always Omar. Do you have any videos about copyright? Did you have to ask Casey for permission to use his footage? How does it work on TH-cam?
Changing the camera angle is definitely something one can do to achieve a variety of shots and make it more interesting:-)

What a great breakdown. 👍
Ah yes, I don't always beat the horse but when I do, I use a donkey. Haha
Nice work on this one. The pre-planning of vlogs is genius.
This is funny because Casey has said how he doesn't write or plan, and that he "writes on editing". I think that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to make movies - and probably he's good at story telling because he cut his teeth doing movies before youtube and phones, so he learned "the hard way".

Yahoooooooo thx bud
Mikey
totally awesome video! do more of these!
Yo Omar!!! Any tips on "How To Plan a Vlog" that tells a story?
Thanks for this great vid, as always very helpful. 1 thing, you mentioned that vloging was out for youtube. So does that mean it's still a go? Thanks🙂
Love casey’s style
Simplicity is key as you take time to position things as you go it will make the overall process quick simple and all.

You definitely had me thinking about how simple it can be, with a little thought, planning and effort. I’m definitely getting a wide angle lens for my iPhone now and planning shots in advance to encourage longer watch time
You don’t need to spend that money. iPhone lens is already pretty wide for vlogging :) try it first and you’ll see
Oh yeah, of course the x0.5 feature. I’ve never used that for video. Thanks!! 😃
I recommend getting a gimbal instead, you’ll love it. I promise your shots would look so professional. Good luck everybody with your projects!
Simplicity is king. People try to do waaay too much for their videos nowadays. Simple is often better.
What's the best wide angle lens for a Canon Rebel SL3 ?
vlogging is popular, informative case study informative video.
This was a great video Omar. I love how you broke everything down.
