Rickson Gracie (Portuguese: [ˈʁiksõ ˈɡɾejsi]; born November 21, 1958) is a Brazilian 9th-degree red belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a retired mixed martial artist.[2][3][4] He is a member of the Gracie family: the third oldest son of Hélio Gracie, brother to Rorion and Relson Gracie, and half-brother to Rolker, Royce, Robin and Royler Gracie.[5] In the 1980s and 1990s, he was widely considered to be the best fighter of the Gracie clan, and one of the toughest in the world.[6] In November 2014 he became an inductee of the Legends of MMA Hall of Fame, alongside Big John McCarthy, Pat Miletich, and Fedor Emelianenko.[7][8] In July 2017, he was promoted to red belt, the highest ranking in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but denied the rank as he had not yet met IBJJF time in rank requirements, keeping the belt for when he does.
Gracie was the subject of the 1995 documentary, Choke, by filmmaker Robert Goodman. The documentary followed Gracie and two other fighters (Todd Hays and Koichiro Kimura) as they prepared and fought in Tokyo's Vale Tudo Japan 1995. Released by Manga Entertainment, the film has been distributed to 23 countries.[28] Rickson had a small role in The Incredible Hulk as Bruce Banner's martial arts instructor. His character is credited as an aikido instructor, despite his jiu-jitsu background. He has appeared on National Geographic's television programme Fight Science.[29][30]
On May 8, 2020, news surfaced that a Netflix film about Rickson Gracie is in the making, release date targeted in late 2021.
His father Helio Gracie disputed Rickson's claim to have had over 400 fights. According to Hélio, Rickson has only competed in fights that are commonly known and reported: the two against Rei Zulu and those that took place in Japan. Helio Gracie alleged that Rickson uses practice and amateur bouts to obtain a number over 400, and that if he counted his fights like Rickson does, he would have in excess of one million. [37]
Rickson's only official loss in martial arts competition came at the 1993 U.S. Sambo Championships in Norman, Oklahoma. Rickson, claimed to be a former gold medalist at 1980 Pan American Sambo Championships at 74 kilograms,[38] faced judo and sambo champion Ron Tripp. Tripp threw Gracie to the canvas by uchi mata in 47 seconds, thus giving Tripp absolute victory under FIAS International Sambo rules. Rickson disputed this loss, claiming he was misinformed of the rules of the event
Gracie has four children; Rockson Gracie (deceased), Kauan, Kaulin and Kron Gracie. In a November 2010 Gracie Mag interview, Rickson discussed the passing of his son Rockson.[41]
In August 2002, Rickson had a special appearance in Japanese media helping out Ogawa before his bout against Matt Ghaffari at the UFO Legend event, in which he assisted. After the event, Ogawa talked again about a fight against Rickson, which the Brazilian considered as possible return match. Rickson also mentioned Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Kazuyuki Fujita as candidates to fight him in said return.[22] However, nothing of it came to fruition, even after UFO president Tatsuo Kawamura proposed creating an event in order to hold the match.[23]
In 2003, Antonio Inoki offered Rickson USD$5 million for a fight against Fujita,[24] but it had no answer.
After the match between Royler Gracie and Genki Sudo in 2004, the latter challenged Rickson. Producer Sadaharu Tanikawa tried to put together a bout between both, but he was unsuccessful.[25] Three years later, after Kazushi Sakuraba defeated Masakatsu Funaki, Tanikawa also tried to promote a bout between Sakuraba and Rickson in 2008, with the same results.[26]
Gracie has confirmed that he is officially retired now and his major focus is to give seminars on Brazilian jiu-jitsu and to try to develop BJJ as his father saw it: not a fighting tool but a social tool, to give confidence to women, children, and physically weak individuals by giving them the ability to defend themselves.[citation needed]

Those were the days when after attending a seminar changed your life for many years. I was at the seminar where the instructor did the same sequence on 20+ participants. He would pull the guard, scissor sweep to the mount, and armbar everyone. We all new what is going to happen, but nobody could stop it.

@@RiccardoAmmendoliaBJJ respectfully disagree. Clark Gracie visited us, did a seminar about how to set up and how to finish his favorite submission: omoplata. End of the day he rolled with everybody and tapped pretty much all of us with it.

Around 1997 I was in Gracie Humaitá and Rickson rolled with around 30 black belts, each one tapped out twice.

I have only been in bjj for a year. From what I can tell, Mr. Gracie is using the most basic techniques on an otherworldly level.
A true rare find would be Royce's last challenge fight at Torrance! It was late 1995. He wore a speedo, fought a kick boxer from Vegas. I was there ; -)

@@breakingthroughinside I'm surprised no one knows or talks about it. It was in the morning. The tape play for some time on the TV near the Juice Bar. Fast and easy fight for Royce. I don't recall how he got there, But he finished him with a Mounted Triangle with punches to the face (closed fist.) Royce took the fight serious. The guys in the instructors program loved to talk "insider infor!" Made them appear super cool, tight with Royce. The Kickboxer was supposed to emulate Maurice Smith and Marco Ruas. One of the instructors said Rorion did not Want Royce fighting Tank, or, Don Frye. Anyway, about a month later I saw Ken Shamrock at the Gracie Academy with some nerdy guys. Business? A couple of weeks after, Royce was offered a fight with Mark Kerr. During that camp Royce sustained a serious back injury. Career ending was the word.. I didn't see Royce for a couple of weeks. That's when Caique arrived. I was at the Gracie Academy for two weeks straight (15 days of classes, AM & PM) I was leaving California. Rorion gave me the deal, it was the first of the month and I was paying $180 a month for three classes a week.

In 1980, I was 15 y.o. and a blue belt in GM Alvaro Barreto´s Academy and went with a fellow to watch a black-belt tournament. At that time Jiu-Jitsu was basically a Rio de Janeiro Martial Art, was not spread even inside Brazil. We were watching the fights when a fighter outside the tatami captured my attention. He had been heating up for a long time, wearing only the lower part of the kimono. Fight comes, fight goes and that guy kept on heating up, alone. At a certain point he was melting like an ice cream under the sun.
I said to my friend in a joky way:
- see that "maluco" (crazy) guy heating up? He is already tired, he´s gonna loose his fight.
My friend replied:
- this is Rickson Gracie, the best of 'em. ( Rickson should be 19 y.o. and I had never heard his name before)
He is the best ever not only because he is specially talented, but mainly because he was more focused and dedicated than anyone else.
He saw it differently, he had already a professional mentality before professionalism came.
Luckily, I was there.

Quite a few jiu-jitsu top names and competitors in history have trained with Rickson in Brazil and he tapped everyone out..9 times in a row according to one of the best guys in Brasil. Another top guy out of gracie barra said Rickson beat everyone so bad in a training session, people were shocked and left devastated after Rickson wiped the mat with them..
"He's sinister" according to a former top competitor in Brasil..
But he wouldn't face Sakuraba in Pride...
His son died around the time that fight was on the horizon to be made according to Rickson.

I bought this in VHS tape from a guy in japan who was selling NHB and grappling matches.....I would send him money in a envelope....wrapped in paper......100 bucks.....crazy. Good old days. Back then there wasn't any jiu jitsu schools so yes we had to learn from watching VHS tapes.

I've heard so many stories from people who were there that just had no idea what to think of Rickson. Training with them was fun. Those were fun days back then
It is great to see this vintage footage and Rickson was a pioneer. It does also show you how much bjj has evolved in a generation. I think most blue or purple belts could easily tap these people that Rickson is rolling with here in this video. This is not to minimize Rickson's skills because he is the GOAT. I mention that just to marvel at how much bjj has evolved and gotten into mainstream.
No one can make it look so effortlessly like Rickson, jujitsu evolved for the wrong reasons. It evolved to sport only. And left the fighting aspect out. Because people think winning a competition is more important. Then learning what could save a life. Sometimes classic is better

Are the guys in the gi Judo guys? I can see the ground attacks as judo players not being used to dealing with submissions. Also the wrestlers you can see how they post on their attacks. Most grapplers did not know about submissions until BJJ came around. Great video, thank you for sharing.
What? Judo guys knew well of submissions, I trained Judo in the 1980s. All the applications, straight, bent armbars, gi chokes, etc. were there. But mostly due to rules/time limits, Judo grappling was fairly basic at least over here. Rickson was miles ahead of most Judo guys I knew. I would think it is fair to say that Judo groundwork much much more athletic in its application. I would even say there applications of triangle choke entries was more advanced than BJJ.

Bruh, Rickson is a legit genius... Many have trained just as hard as him but his level skill may never be reached again.. He's the BJJ equivalent of Greco-Roman wrestling's Alexander Karelian, Michael Jordan, or Albert Einstein, or a Nick Saban of college football....
People that dominate their professions to such an extent that even if you don't like them, you HAVE to recognize greatness.. Roger is the ONLY BJJ guy who on that same level... One of his student's student (who actually trained many times under Rickson), says that Rickson is actually slight above Roger... IMO, he probably was a little biased but his reasoning and logic made sense... Won't mention his name out of respect but he's a well Respected black belt, teacher and has trained for well over 20 years, and can be seen in some the old grainy footage showing a young Rickson teaching and rolling at the old Gracie Academy in Torrance..

One of my dads friends went to one of Master Rickson’s seminars back in the late 00s. Black belt, had been studying the art of JJ for like 12 years at the time and he had the honor to roll with Master Rickson and he says he has never felt like a white belt other than that occasion. He’s been tapped as a black belt but he has never felt so useless/helpless before.
I never saw Rickson against a big black belt, to see his domination unfortunately

C'était au début de l'avénement du JJB, aujourd'hui en 2024 le développement fut tel, que de nouveaux prodiges sont apparus.....il en va ainsi de générations en générations.....Reste des très grands du sol !
Roger Gracie did the same to the best of the best : Buchecha, Romulo Barral, Marcelo Garcia, Rafael Lovato, Braulio Estima, Terere, Andre Galvao and the list goes on. Rickson is legend but it was a different era of jiujitsu.
It's much different doing it the random strangers and tuff guys of different weight and sizes. At times Rickson is even given up positioning.
Just to see him escape then finish them.
And let's not forget the size difference. Rickson 5ft9in 185 pounds. Roger Is physical Beast don't even know his weight but you know it's much bigger than that.

Marcelo Garcia did the same thing to bigger and stronger guys who were knowledgeable and were more capable than any of these guys and Marcelo is smaller that Rickson. It’s not the same doing this to random strangers who had no clue about jiujitsu, than doing it to bjj world champions like Roger did. Rickson is a legend but it was a different time. Do you think Rickson would have done the same to Marco Ruas, Sakuraba, Bas Rutten or Carlos Rosado?
It being in a different era of jiu-jitsu. Doesn't make it any less great. If anything my opinion that makes it even better. It's what got my attention and interest to train the art. Not a bunch of already highly-skilled Jiu-Jitsu guys Rolling in an academy or training and competition. Watching that is great, but that's for the already people who train in the art a see or feel high-level transition and timing for better positioning in Jiujitz.
@@hybridkempo6165 The Roger Gracie observation was in reference to him dominating the best of the best in the same way that Rickson did it to a group of untrained men. Roger and any other high level black belt would do the same that Rickson did here. The difference is that Roger did it to the best of the best unlike Rickson. If Marco Ruas was with this group it would be very different.

Everyone can have their heros, and Rickson is certainly great. But as an MMA fan it's always stood out to me that Rickson backed down from Sakuraba's challenge. Rickson didn't want to risk a loss and ruin his legacy.
Yeah well, that's BS. Rickson didn't back down, Saku & Rickson were all set to fight but tragedy struck and Rickson's oldest son Rockson passed away unexpectedly. After that, the fight wasn't important to Rickson and he pulled out understandably. He didn't back down.

@dboygamer8184 oh ok were you the Matchmaker, because I was in my early 20's back then and I remember reading that Rickson vs Sakuraba was going to happen, I don't know the date of when it was set but obviously it would've been set in early 2001 being as Rockson passed in December and fight was immediately canceled trust me it was almost at the stage where they were going to start to promote it. Because of that tragedy Rickson lost interest understandably.

Pride was early MMA with no weight classes. Gracie went in there, most of the times being 10-30 lbs smaller than his opponent. He went in there with little striking skills. Yet, he won.

But is it effective?
Jiu-Jitsu has become a sport and lost it's martial aspect for many students. That is why you see the techniques you do. Most schools don't teach self-defense and don't spar with gloves on.

No, if that were the case, then it means Rickson had about 8 seminars total (8×50=400). He had many fights outside of the seminars. He also had many more seminars than 8.

Rickson is playing with these big alpha wrestlers ans some black belts in probably judo and taps them all one by one, and they are all big and strong. They step in one by one and he just goes on tapping them. Nowadays black belts after maybe 10 rounds are just defending.
