That's really fascinating to hear from her directly about how she learned sign, the struggles she has with her Menere's disease, and especially how she developed the "deaf accent" for her character. I was wondering about that last bit...
I just looked this up on IMDb, and Katie LaClec references a line on the show on an episode that would air approximately two weeks after this interview was posted. As in "Kids can be really mean". This is what the actress for Daphne, Katie, says in the interview talking about her deaf accent, and in the sixth episode of season 1 of Switched at Birth, The Persistence of Memory, Bay asks Daphne to tell her why she left her hearing school, or why it was so bad. Daphne prefaces her explantion by saying "Let's just say third-grade girls can be really mean". That had to be completely accidental! I think that is absolutley hilarous. I am realizing that this is total obsessive fangirl/boying right now. I am obssesed, maybe a little bit. Ha haha ha.
Absolutely amazing series!! I watched the whole series(I might've missed the first episode) during that marathon yesterday on ABC for the first time and was blown away of how well the show truely is! I'm just sorry for myself for not watching in the first place but I'm glad that I'm hooked :)
Katie Leclerc is very beautiful and talented. Great interview! I love Switched at Birth! It is a wonderfully written, incredibly acted, unique family-drama. Here in Canada, I've been watching on-line which I don't mind, but it would be fantastic if the series would air on a Canadian network..... I can't wait to see more of Switched at Birth.
I absolutely LOVE the show! I've taken sign language in school for 2 years now, and I look forward to many more years to come! :D It really is a beautiful language and I find myself signing to my parents even because they love it as well lol :)
A video interviewing a person supposedly acting "Deaf" on SAB which has tons of Deaf fans is not captioned or subtitled. That was NOT so "Clevver"! Please make this video accessible for Deaf people.
I don't think she experiences loss of hearing like most ppl with her disease do.... she's said she experiences more of the vertigo symptom more than that the loss of hearing.
*sweetly* Oh I do too - it makes my days better...I love when she smiles and wrinkles her nose and squints her eyes when she laughs. When I was younger, when somebody scrunches their nose, it was referred to as "the bunny nose." Katie does the bunny nose lol... She's so cute!
I find Katie and her character one of the most intelligent and well developed people / character on family dramas in a long time. Not is Katie amazing at being able to inbody such a complex character. But the writers created such a hard character to get right. Good luck.
OMG shes amazing...im learning asl cuz of this show!!!!! aahhhhh cant wait for the next batch of season 1!!! aaahh!!! so excited! and ironic tht she learned asl b4 she really needed it aha
She is hard-of-hearing & at age 20 was diagnosed as having Ménière's disease, a degenerative inner ear disorder whose symptoms include fluctuating hearing loss & vertigo, both her father & older sister have Ménière's disease as well. Although she is hard of hearing, she is able to use speech.
Most people do not realize I am, because of the way i speak. My speech is excellent for someone who is profoundly deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other. (I have youtubes videos where I sign songs in sign language) in one of them I talk and you wouldn't even know i have a hearing loss :)
As someone with meniere's disease and hard of hearing, I've got to say that the music in the background is distracting, I can't hear what they are saying...you'd think that the music would be much softer than the people talking, not the same frequency.
hey if there is anyone reading this that can help me find out where the auditions are for future episodes of switched at birth, it would a great help. i do know sign language and i wanted to be on this show. but i was just wondering if anyone can help me with that!!please and thank you..
That sounds so...negative. She's meant to act like a deaf girl. That means that she has to take speech therapy, and she represents the character very well. She isn't mocking them at ALL.
omg so weird hearing her without the deaf accent
Vivian Luu ikr
@@therobloxpotatoxxx8308 thank you
Lol
You're right. She isn't really deaf then?
@@jacquiedresser8610 she started loosing her hearing a little after she started sign language when she was 17 years old
Because of her voice I imagine her now as a completely different person with a completely different personality
It's very weird hearing her real voice I've been binge watching for over a week now I love this show!
She sounds like a completely different person!!
Shaye Cold She looks like a completely different person also. No red hair or freckles

that's actually the best possible compliment for an actress.
She's sounds like a completely different person in real life!
Brendon Urie is literally Jesus Christ YOUR USERNAME IS MY LIFE
which is the best possible compliment for an actress.
I love Katie's laugh! How she scrunches her nose and just burst it out. It's so cute!! (:
Yeah...she has a cute laugh :-)
That's really fascinating to hear from her directly about how she learned sign, the struggles she has with her Menere's disease, and especially how she developed the "deaf accent" for her character. I was wondering about that last bit...
Lol little did they know that daphne almost goes to jail
IM ALREADY OBSESSED!!! its like the best show on right now!

"We have some eye candy. It's distracting sometimes."
HELL YEAH YOU DO. You got Sean Berdy, Austin Butler. Dang dude.
This was a great interview!!! Great questions and enthusiastic answers!!! I'm really into this show. Katie's a terrific actress.
It just shows she’s an amazing actress
I don't think she experiences loss of hearing like most ppl with her disease do.... she's said she experiences more of the vertigo symptom more than that the loss of hearing.
Actually, sometimes she can hear nothing.
It's so weird to see her not signing her words, and speaking absolutely crystal clear..
I love Katie's laugh
*sweetly* Oh I do too - it makes my days better...I love when she smiles and wrinkles her nose and squints her eyes when she laughs. When I was younger, when somebody scrunches their nose, it was referred to as "the bunny nose." Katie does the bunny nose lol... She's so cute!
Katie...you are amazing. I love your character and you have redefined perfection. You have done incredibly

Haha I love the show. From the beginning. Its just awesome.
This is inspiring and awesome at the same time. And by awesome, I mean wicked awesome!
she uses hearing aids. she said that some times she can kinda hear and sometimes she cant hear anything so that explains why she speaks clearly.
im obsessed with the show

I had read she was partially deaf but I actually thought she couldn't hear so well and she really had the accent...
the person was by that statement implying that deaf people spoke ugly
