No, it's really hard. Learning a new language always is, but I think sign language is even harder, because you don't use your voice. It is something completely different. Still, it's a beautiful language and in my opinion totally worth putting the effort into, even though it would probably take years.
me too, even though I'm hearing. I've been learning asl for maybe 3 or 4 years. I know that I started after watching a few episodes from the beginning. It was hard in the begining and it gets easier every time
I did and I'm interested in learning it now because my brother was deaf when he was a baby but he isn't anymore.. i Dont Know how that happened but my parents are fluent in sign language and who knows if you will ever meet someone deaf
I have a friend with slurred speech that uses sign language and we love watching Switched at Birth together as she teaches me some sign language. After watching more Switched at Birth me and my friend communicate a lot easier. So glad that the show uses sign language.
There are actually deaf people on the show, Emmett, Travis and Melody are all actually Deaf . I love this show and it inspires me to want to learn sign langue.
Same. I started learning it because of the show. I was never interested at all until I started watching the show and now my friend are I are learning together and talk in it in public. People stare because they think we're dead but were not😂 but we still have a bit to go to be fluent, but I think we'll soon be fluent. Maybe in a few months 😧
I didn't know Melody was actually deaf. Because in one of the behind the scenes videos, Melody "heard" a siren and made a weird face, then she said, "Oh, I'm supposed to act deaf."
For the commenter "machinedrum17" who is disappointed Katie isn't actually deaf and then proceeded to compare her role as a deaf person while she is actually hearing to a white person playing a hispanic/black role and then continuously deleted my comments: Katie has Meniere's Disease, she is ACTUALLY considered partially deaf. I also suffer from Meniere's Disease and can vouch for that. You talk about how it is unfair to the deaf community- people like Katie and I are part of that deaf community. I have hearing aids, I sign, I read lips and I am recognized by the government as a disabled person under the category of deaf/hearing loss. One day, Katie and I will be COMPLETELY deaf, just like her role as Daphne is completely deaf. Due to the nature of her character, she needs speech. For those shows where they do "what ifs" and because they do actually like her to be able to speak in general. In regards to your comparison of a white person playing a black/hispanic role to her playing a deaf person, it's irrelevant and incorrect. Would you deny that a half black person is not allowed to play the role of a black person in a show/movie? No, you wouldn't. Why? Because they're still black. Just as Katie is still deaf. She is lucky to not be completely deaf yet, but she will be one day. I don't think you have the right to discredit her. "I win :)"
amen to that. I'm partially deaf in both ears and have been since birth due to recurring ear infections. I've been learning asl for when my hearing goes completely. it has helped me communicate with a man that comes into the store I work at who is deaf and tho I don't know much his face lights up when he sees me because he knows we can communicate some
i have menieres too, people find it hard to understand when I have episodes of temporary hearing loss, like one second I'm fine, the next I'm deaf in one ear for example.
I have a deaf girl that sits next to me in college, shes in my Sociology class and i'm trying to talk to her in ASL. I'm learning by watching TH-cam videos and NOW by watching Switched at Birth. Thanks God Bless
***** well... sort of... she's not completely deaf. She's got Meniere's disease. Sometimes she's deaf, sometimes she can hear a little, or hear normal but eventually she'll be completely deaf.
i watched every episode very inspireing i learned every hand jestuer u did on that show i was amazed of all the acters i actuly thought u were a teen girl that was deaf un till now i wont stop watching best mobie ever
yeah i knew your trouble, but i think its bescause the video is more for the fans of sab, and the most od them are not deaf. But its true, at least they could had add subtitles...
that's not what she's talking about though, George. she's talking about the type of subtitles that play throughout the video so that a Deaf of hard of hearing person can read exactly what the people are saying. not JUST for the phrases in ASL. those phrases that Katie signed are captioned mostly for the hearing people, because obviously the Deaf ones who know ASL wouldn't need the captions for those phrases.
It's interesting to see a different sign for "mosquito"! My teacher always talks about how sign differs from even city to city, but now I can finally see an example. (I sign mosquito by pinching the skin on my hand and slapping it.)
I work with deaf kids all the time and this show is amazing because i may not know a whole lot of signing but it helps and of course they teach me haha... but they love love this show.. #1 topic when im with them
I started learning sign just before SAB came out and It's fun because you pick up more signs as I watch. I started signing songs as well so I'm excited!
I'm learning Sign Language on my own because I can't get the classes and I learned a lot through books and videos. The other day I was in the supermarket and I saw this deaf family signing to one another so I went over and had a mini conversation with them and to my surprise we understood each other! I was like "Thank God!" lol
I didn't get to ask anyone to prom with signs, but...I was at work last week, I work as a volunteer at a hospital part-time for school, and while I was heading in, a deaf girl stopped me, and was trying to ask me where the cafeteria was. It was SO cool! She didn't orally speak, but I actually understood about 60% of what she said, and I responded back, as best as I could, in ASL! And then her family came, and asked me where the cafeteria was, but it was such an amazing experience!
i work at a hearing disabled school... and its always fun to watch the children discuss and everything :) they can actually talk but when they are like talking "secret stuff" (like girls about boys) they use sign language :)
I want to be an Early Childhood Educator, and I'm already a certified paraprofessional at 18 years old, so I have decided that, like Daphne's character, I'd like to use ASL to help deaf children learn and achieve their goals in life. Thank you Switched at Birth for the idea! I can't wait! College starts in a couple of weeks, and I've already been driving my family insane by signing instead of speaking! Lol! Also, Katie Leclerc, GREAT job on the accent!! As a thespian, I cannot, for the death of me, learn ANY accent! Ha! This is my ALL TIME favorite TV show, and I'll be seriously depressed once season 5 ends and the show is over. It's been truly inspiring to me! I just started watching it 4 or 5 months ago on Netflix, and I watched the last episode of season 4 tonight. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for all of the excellent life lessons, societal relations, emotional rollercoasters, and love you've given through ABC's Switched at Birth! Sincerely, Ashton Willingham
I love Switched at Birth!!! It is my favorite show ever!!!! It has inspired me to learn sign language and I already know a lot of signs! So thank you and I wish you could see me so I could say that in sign language to you.
Same. I started learning it because of the show. I was never interested at all until I started watching the show and now my friend are I are learning together and talk in it in public. People stare because they think we're dead but were not😂 but we still have a bit to go to be fluent, but I think we'll soon be fluent. Maybe in a few months 😧
+Hayleesbeauty715 same here except I kind of was interested veggie I watched the show. I went to a college to tour even though I have around six years left and I got a huge sign language book except it is SEE instead of ASL. But they are basically the same.
Keep in mind though that ASL is used in the US and parts of Canada (among other countries), but the Deaf communities of Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand use sign languages entirely different from ASL.
It's more that because of their deafness, most of them become visual thinkers. They are more perceptive visually than most hearing people. They can catch all those signs because their visual memory is so advanced compared to most people.
When it comes to the signs with the double handshapes...I have to use my fists cuz due to cerebral palsy, I only have mobility in my left hand. I can't turn my right hand over, inside-out, can't stretch my right thumb out, or really use my middle, ring, or pinky finger ...so fists all the way!
Not necessarily. I'm from Canada, speak English, Japanese, Finnish, as well as American and Japanese sign language and learning British sign. If you've got the resources, you should take them, you've got the internet so you'll always have people around the world to practice with and maybe one day what you've learned will come in handy if you need to interpret something for someone, or even just to know it for yourself. :) I'm sure Swedish sign is great too. ^_^
oh god am i late to this party of learning about this show, but having the interest in learning ASL ive found it. and on top of all the other videos ive watched to learn, this one, ive learned MOSQUITO! and i love that... lol
That is beautiful! Congrats ... and since this comment of yours is really 'old' I hope you had a great time together! I was so inspired by Switched at Birth, I signed up for an ASL course in my country. Can't wait! :)
this is literally my favorite show my for my entire life I want this so like a million times every season oh my goodness I love this show from the bottom of my heart like from the top to the bottom of my heart I just love the show something just makes my skin crawl and makes me like oh my God why would I do that but it's a very lovely favorite favorite favorite favorite shows like never will I watch another show this is not my favorite show that I'm a watch everyday literally I just is watching season 1 again and I was done with all the seasons and now I'm watching season 1 again.
I do sign language basically everyday due to being mostly deaf. Now, this is making me want teach others different kinds of signs. P.s I have ask someone out to prom by doing signs. :)
For those who have learned Sign Language because of the show make sure you try and find a place that has deaf people that go there and socialize and you will get better at.
Its actually not hard. My friends and I wanted to learn it we already love Switched at Birth so that was an easy way for us to learn and we would also watch videos of people doing songs in asl and its really helpful and a fun way to learn the language. Even when we would just talk to each other or people we know we would do whatever words we knew in asl just so we could practice. I hope this helps/makes sense ( the last part)
I actually started learning ASL because of switched at Birth 😂
I am starting becuz of it too!
It's making me want to start learning it. Is it easy?
No, it's really hard. Learning a new language always is, but I think sign language is even harder, because you don't use your voice. It is something completely different. Still, it's a beautiful language and in my opinion totally worth putting the effort into, even though it would probably take years.
+Gia R. not super hard you will get the basic it definitely no simple tho
me too, even though I'm hearing. I've been learning asl for maybe 3 or 4 years. I know that I started after watching a few episodes from the beginning. It was hard in the begining and it gets easier every time
Am I the only one that learned a couple of signs because of the show😂✊
Nah I did too
Me too
Foreveryoung452 so

I
I did and I'm interested in learning it now because my brother was deaf when he was a baby but he isn't anymore.. i Dont Know how that happened but my parents are fluent in sign language and who knows if you will ever meet someone deaf
***** MeTo
her laugh is adorable aww
Yeah, I love it when she laughs. She's so sweet
My boyfriend is deaf so he asked me to prom in sign language and hey spelt out that sentence
with rose peddles
I have a friend with slurred speech that uses sign language and we love watching Switched at Birth together as she teaches me some sign language. After watching more Switched at Birth me and my friend communicate a lot easier. So glad that the show uses sign language.

Hayleesbeauty715 I noticed its been a year since you posted that reply so I'm just wondering if you reached your goal and if your fluent yet?😊
I didn't know Melody was actually deaf. Because in one of the behind the scenes videos, Melody "heard" a siren and made a weird face, then she said, "Oh, I'm supposed to act deaf."
she is actualy deaf, right now she is only partially deaf but one day she will be completely deaf.
"I win :)"
In addition- Vanessa Marano is not hispanic, she is Italian.....yet I don't see you getting angry about that?
amen to that. I'm partially deaf in both ears and have been since birth due to recurring ear infections. I've been learning asl for when my hearing goes completely. it has helped me communicate with a man that comes into the store I work at who is deaf and tho I don't know much his face lights up when he sees me because he knows we can communicate some
+machinedrum17 sorry you don't win
Bye👋🏻👋🏻
i have menieres too, people find it hard to understand when I have episodes of temporary hearing loss, like one second I'm fine, the next I'm deaf in one ear for example.
Shayna McCord-Dupuis she is deaf she went deaf at 17 that's why her voice is normal
i would’ve never expected her voice to be like this
I LOVE SWITCHED AT BIRTH KATIE IS SO BEAUTIFUL SO IS BAY
I know ALOT of sign language, and I actually learned most of it from Switched At Birth
me too, me and my friend can have fluent conversations in sign about a lot of different topics thanks to switched at birth ;)
Cactus Gamer You are not fluent in ASL from watching switched at birth
@@cactusgamer1360 r/thathappened
I have a deaf girl that sits next to me in college, shes in my Sociology class and i'm trying to talk to her in ASL. I'm learning by watching TH-cam videos and NOW by watching Switched at Birth. Thanks God Bless
her smile is adorable!!!
Her voice is so different
I would like to know how on earth she feigns that deaf accent on the show physically...that's talent :-)
sweetlife031 apparently the Deaf community really doesn’t like it
I love ASL!
Katie's voice is so different from her accented one on Switched at Birth.
She is great at playing deaf
*****
well... sort of... she's not completely deaf. She's got Meniere's disease. Sometimes she's deaf, sometimes she can hear a little, or hear normal but eventually she'll be completely deaf.
cnith2 She is Hard of Hearing, not Deaf. She has hearing lose because of her Miniere's disease and has hearing aids, BUT she can hear well enough.
Where did I say she was deaf? Did you not read my comment...?
*****
I guess you don't know what Miniere's disease is. Go read on it, then come back to me.
cnith2 the comment was not directed to you. it was directed to Ana.
she's so cute, i am currently learning sign language and i would love to see more tutorials from her.
i watched every episode very inspireing i learned every hand jestuer u did on that show i was amazed of all the acters i actuly thought u were a teen girl that was deaf un till now i wont stop watching best mobie ever
its funny that a video about ASL doesn't have Captioning for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.....
yeah i knew your trouble, but i think its bescause the video is more for the fans of sab, and the most od them are not deaf. But its true, at least they could had add subtitles...
For real though
zofie darling I agree, but you can add subtitles on TH-cam to the videos.
There are subtitles in the video (not yt ones but it says what every phrase means)
that's not what she's talking about though, George. she's talking about the type of subtitles that play throughout the video so that a Deaf of hard of hearing person can read exactly what the people are saying. not JUST for the phrases in ASL. those phrases that Katie signed are captioned mostly for the hearing people, because obviously the Deaf ones who know ASL wouldn't need the captions for those phrases.

Specially when she laughs.
Yeah, I was thinking the same; more her than Emma Watson or like the perfect mix :-)
It so cool to see sign language integrated in a show, I love to sign.
I didn't get to ask anyone to prom with signs, but...I was at work last week, I work as a volunteer at a hospital part-time for school, and while I was heading in, a deaf girl stopped me, and was trying to ask me where the cafeteria was. SWITCHED AT BIRTH IS MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!
Pls make more seasons pls I'm dying over here.
I didnt know she was actually hearing! She's so good at being deaf!
Parahoy Tv she is hard of hearing though
TwentyOneMemes thanks for telling me!
Yes. Katie has Mineers Disease...something like that. But how does she play deaf in the show?
Ikr! She has such a real deaf accent.
just reading that made me cry. thats adorable
they are talented to be able to do that ,act when they are deaf now they deserve respect!
This summer, I saw a kid speaking in sign language with his mute dad. Sweetest thing ever.
What she said about how u can learn SL by watching the show is so true I actually wanted to learn it so I did its a pretty fun language
My friend looked this up and learned to ask me to prom in sign language! :)))
Your a lucky girl 😄
Perrie Malik I know it :)
Katie leclerc genial como siempre
i work at a hearing disabled school... and its always fun to watch the children discuss and everything :) they can actually talk but when they are like talking "secret stuff" (like girls about boys) they use sign language :)

Switched at birth is my favorite show right now and on episode 3 season 2
switched at birth is awesome! it inspired me to learn ASL and brazilian sign language - LIBRAS (I'm a Brazilian) .. i'm in love with sign languages
omg i love katies voice
Im happy to see the whole prom thing, Im currently taking asl in highschool and my teacher said theres no sign for prom, so its exciting to see one :P
I love it when people learn sign language.
This show did inspire tons of people, I can only imagine how you feel😊
I love Switched at Birth!!! It is my favorite show ever!!!! It has inspired me to learn sign language and I already know a lot of signs! So thank you and I wish you could see me so I could say that in sign language to you.

+Hayleesbeauty715 you are lucky I only have one and the internet.
Wow she sounds so different than from the show!!! :) She's an amazing actress
I loved seeing this, i am learning sign and love katie! :)
I love watching the ASL.. I think it is a beautiful language!
i love switched at birth such a good show!
once i was at mcdonald's and there were 2 people speaking sign language, and I was so amazed! lol, they were moving their hands so fast!
Keep in mind though that ASL is used in the US and parts of Canada (among other countries), but the Deaf communities of Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand use sign languages entirely different from ASL.
i love the show switched birth and clevertv....awesome!
shes kinda a role model because im deaf and play basketball
It's more that because of their deafness, most of them become visual thinkers. They are more perceptive visually than most hearing people. They can catch all those signs because their visual memory is so advanced compared to most people.
I knew ASL before I started watching switched at birth and it was really fun to mute it and watch the show by reading the hand signals
Same😊
I know sign language and I still love watching these things :)
LOVE HER SO MUCH
She seems like a joy to be with
wow she acted good in switched @ birth the accent and the sign languages Awesome

This is my favorite show and I though she really was dead she was a good story
Hmm..Never seen that variation of golf! Cool!
I love sign language, not that fluent, but I'm good with it😂
Me to i love it
I am deaf and I have to sign and trust me it is a beautiful language but I think hearing would be better.
Emalia-Rose Caxtion Well I think that being dead is a beautiful things. Plus you can't hear the haters *snap* (lol I'm punny)
When it comes to the signs with the double handshapes...I have to use my fists cuz due to cerebral palsy, I only have mobility in my left hand. I can't turn my right hand over, inside-out, can't stretch my right thumb out, or really use my middle, ring, or pinky finger ...so fists all the way!
what a sweetheart
yeah I do pause when watching the movie and looking up the sign. this is how i learn sign language :)
i have practically memorized the signs for "father", "seriously" and "sorry" :D
Switched at Birth
your my fav actress on the show
I learned a song in ASL called 1000 years its very easy. And I'm still learning music and other things like colors and basic words.
this is awesome :) I love Katie :)
i have a deaf brother so i learned asl for 6 years so i understand pretty much everything emmet and bay and everyone else say
I love the movie switched at birth!
It's a show lol
+Gia R. oh😅
oh god am i late to this party of learning about this show, but having the interest in learning ASL ive found it. and on top of all the other videos ive watched to learn, this one, ive learned MOSQUITO! and i love that... lol
That is beautiful! Congrats ... and since this comment of yours is really 'old' I hope you had a great time together!
I was so inspired by Switched at Birth, I signed up for an ASL course in my country. Can't wait! :)
You are so awesome Katie... Is it possible at all that i could meet you sometime
Thanks for clarifying that, I didn't know there was a difference like in different parts of the world.
this is literally my favorite show my for my entire life I want this so like a million times every season oh my goodness I love this show from the bottom of my heart like from the top to the bottom of my heart I just love the show something just makes my skin crawl and makes me like oh my God why would I do that but it's a very lovely favorite favorite favorite favorite shows like never will I watch another show this is not my favorite show that I'm a watch everyday literally I just is watching season 1 again and I was done with all the seasons and now I'm watching season 1 again.
I know a few sign language signs, i think its cool and fun to do. Its like a secret language
im learning to do ASL its really nice
I love Switched At Birth
I do sign language basically everyday due to being mostly deaf. Now, this is making me want teach others different kinds of signs. P.s I have ask someone out to prom by doing signs. :)
her laugh
Omg i love her 💕💕💕💕
I'm deaf in my left year and I sometimes use sign language:) I use it while I'm explaining things it kinda helps me
i have truly learned so much sign language from Switched At BIrth :)
no closed caption???
Because of Switched at Birth I started learning ASL and going to college for ASL
Are there any more tutorials with Katie Leclerc? If so...can you please post them? :)
i ended up studying all as much as my school offered in college after watching the show
Awww that's cute! She's teaching then English sign! The signs are ASL but the syntax is English.
I took two years of ASL and never learned the sign for golf! That was awesome, mind blown.
Switched at birth got me interested in sign language and I'm doing really good now aha
For those who have learned Sign Language because of the show make sure you try and find a place that has deaf people that go there and socialize and you will get better at.
Her voice sounds so different outside of the show!
I am currently watching Swicthed at Birth is awesome so drama full Emmet boys blah and its awesome!!!!
The last signed sebtence seemed more SEE, not ASL. The sentence structure seemed more of SEE (Signed Exact Englush).
I think it was just because she said it out loud as she was signing it. Which kinda throws it off when you put the signs together
True. That makes sense.
ah huh
