An Early Access look at the new P-47 Thunderbolt and the new map "the channel" we take the P-47 out to do some air to ground missions and see how she preforms.
In this Video we absolutely level a German Airfield with the new P-47 Thunderbolt and talk a little bit about the known bugs and issues with the aircraft.

The P-47 was a big bird for a fighter!
Pleased to see it modelled. It isn't one of the more "glamorous" fighters of the war, but it was one of the most influential. Pilots speak of it being utterly benign, responsive and maneuveriable as well as very tough with a big weapon load.

Gotta admit, even though I am a big advocate of IL2 when it comes to WWII stuff, this does look pretty good. Especially that map.
I’m the same way man I use to go to il2 but with this new stuff they’re adding it’s getting a lot better.
I'd probably still prefer Il-2 for WWII for a while, but DCS is getting there, slow and steady. What DCS needs most is the new DM and certainly an AI that doesn't cheat the crap out of the planes as well, unless you fly online exclusively with no AI opponents except for bombers. But even then, there's still quite a lack of assets left. But who does really care? DCS quality will make this become great in the end and we all know how they keep things up over long periods of time as we just witnessed how they updated some of the cockpits already and even will be extending the A-10C and Ka-50 modules furthermore.
I'll definately fly that thing since I'll still get that as a backer reward for the Kickstarter campaign; 1 module left then still, which I'll probably let the 262 be, so I'll buy the Mossie when it drops. Of course, I'll get that map as well. Supporting our favourite devs (that goes for both ED and 777 in my case) is the least we can do to keep the good stuff coming. It may look like patch work now if you take an overall look at DCS WWII, but well, Rome wasn't built in a day. I was one of the guys wondering why they'd make a P-51 before all this came up, but I had to buy it since they just nailed it.

DCS needs to finalize warbirds damage model asap. It will change the game whole a lot.
Btw, aren't you supposed to dive at a steeper angle for a pickle bomb run? I mean 15-30 might be ok for gun runs, but bombing is generally more accurate at close to dive angles for warbirds.
The convergence and harmonization the guns have is amazing. There's actually a spread to them, unlike the laser-beam 50 cals in Il-2.
I can't wait to get this aircraft in my hangar. If you wanted to send a picture to your girlfriend, you took one sitting in a P-51. If you went into combat, you wanted to sit in a P-47. Thanks for the sneak peek. Also, as a strategy you want to put a crater in the middle of the runway first, or where two cross, so the airplanes cannot take off. Then it's like shooting fish in a barrel. I see the B-17s did that for you. Unless of course the fighters can take off in the grass, in which case you'd be very busy.
Seems to fly really smooth and punch like Tyson, very good strafe runs; and on the right ones too!!. Stay well man

Went to my flight museum in my city memorial day weekend saw a couple amazing warbirds
My fav is the ME262 and the P-51

I feel like the P-47 is an under appreciated dogfighter frankly. It doesn’t turn great and doesn’t have that good of a rate of climb, but it’s absurdly rugged, amazing in a dive and slays in an energy fight. In WW2 it’s AA kill ratio was 4.6:1

I'm not that much into the WWII stuff really (I like just flying the warbirds from time to time) but this is getting me interested. Getting up close and personal makes a nice change from dropping a JDAM or LGB from Angels 30.
It would be nice if the new Pacific Mariana Islands map were modeled for WWII, airports with perforated steel planking (PSP) and grass runways, shacks/tents instead of concrete hangers/bunkers. We can use Japanese liveries on the Fw-190 A8 for the Mitsubishi A6M until one is released. Just a dream I have!
In reality there would have been far fewer flak posts but they would have been spewing gazillions of quad 20 rounds at you.
Allied pilots would generally approach an airfield in the weeds at high speed, do one pass and away.
It's hard to believe that pilots did actually attack such well defended targets, just watching a WW2 bird go past at speed during an airshow then picturing yourself behind a quad 20mm and wondering how they actually missed.
My dad flew P47s and P51s in WW2 I wish he could have seen these

The effects of bullets hitting the fuselage of the bombers is exactly the same of the videos showing real attacks on airfields.
Not quite. Dirt "splashes" are too big in DCS, and there's no ricochets like in the real thing.

I recall WW2 pilots stating that they usually had only one good surprise run over a defended target like an airfield, a second run was very dangerous due to AAA being alert and dialed in.
Can't wait to try this out. How does it compare to the Il2 P-47? Seems like it performs nicer than Il2 but can't be sure until I fly it myself.

P47 was one of the best ground attack aircraft the allies had available in WW2...next to the B25 Mitchell, of course.

It really was difficult to over stress the wings of A P47.... Robert Johnson’s book “Thunderbolt” is a very good book about it

Something of a side note, one of my fav documentaries is "Thunderbolts - The Conquest Of The Reich", available here on youtube. Circa '45, all color footage, good veteran interviews. They specifically cited airfields as one of the more dangerous missions too.

Ya know, the name, even the word _"Thunderbolt"_ has always irked me!! I mean, there are no 'thunderbolts'!! You get either a thunderclap or a lightning bolt, but not a thunderbolt and not a lightning clap. Hells, you can even have peals of thunder, but not 'bolts' of thunder,' because thunder is a sound, whereas a bolt is a visual representation of a physical, visual phenomenon (ie - the lightning bolt, or even crossbow bolt). Mixing and mashing words for the thunder sounds/ noises with the physical descriptor of 'bolt' is as poorly mashed together as threatening someone by saying *"I'll have your voice on a pike!!!"* Or perhaps even: *"I'll cut your song off and throw it out the window!!!"*
That wouldn't be so easy if you mixed some FLAK Vierling (4x20mm) in there.. the 88mm doesn't work well against maneuvering fighters down low.

Pierre Clostermann, in The Big SHow, noted that he was deathly afraid of the dense flak protecting German airfields, with good reason. Accordingly, I don't think this is very realistic.
My father used to work on WWII Douglas A-1 Skyraiders in Vietnam. Try a Douglas A-1 Skyraider.
Don't pay any attention to the P-47s size. It's a big ol' pussycat to fly. And you can't break it, no matter what you do. Except if you mismanage the motor, but that's on you.

Nice strafing...one thing interests me though regarding stability. Do you have turbulence set to some value in ME (I usualy set to 8 or 9 and it really rocks me when flying low)? I have seen some private footage of low flying jets in air to air video, and they really shake and fight trough the air turbulence
i don't know what turbulence I had in this mission but there was deff wind and weather effects turbulence was maybe higher than 8-9 i think tho.

One thing I would like to see improved in DCS is damage and sound effects. The AA guns firing sound really “plinky” and the sound of the bomb hits don’t have the bass that they should have. As for damage FX, the bomb hits look somewhat plain, but I think they nailed strafing damage. Good vid as always.
Even now, it’s miles better than the metallic sounds of IL-2:great battles

@@GrowlingSidewinder They sure did, you should go check out Gregs Airplanes and Automobiles channel. He's got a lot of very good, very in depth videos on the Jug. One of them includes how even in 44 it was capable of escorting B-17s to Berlin and back but the USAAF tried to cover it up because of previous decisions. Thanks!

I knew a guy who said that planes coming back from missions would strafe people in fields on their way back, he said his mother got strafed multiple times. Guess if they had any ammo left after a mission they would just unload it on whoever happened to be working the field that day.

The Jug is well known as being a very forgiving aircraft. Such a beautiful plane. I hope DCS treats her better than IL-2 seems to have. The IL-2 GB version feels like I'm flying a glass canon. Something the Jug was not.
There is a reason they called the A-10 the thunderbolt 2!
