The results are in, and the Vinfast VF8 has been crash tested by the NHTSA... only receiving a 4 star rating and with the passenger only getting 2-star.
For a struggling manufacturer, it's even more bad news they'll need to work to overcome.
But the devil's in the details, and this result confused me, so I dug a bit deeper...

I sat in a Vinfast ( at one of the local malls here in Charlotte NC ) and it was comfortable, did not drive it. From talking to the rep that was showing the car, it did seem like something I/we would consider. Our concern is more the service if needed and the rep said they will come to me instead of me going to a dealer. Now with this crash test data, it is more of a reason to think hard about a purchase.
I'd rather have a North-American 4/5 rating with no obvious failure on crash fundamentals than an Australian 4/5 where one star got docked simply for not having enough sufficiently obnoxious advanced driver annoyance systems.
It doesn't matter how it performs in a crash, if the axles fall off the vehicle when it's on the highway.

They should have started with that little EV Suzuki Jimny lookalike. That is one of the only EVs I would ever buy...and if they can have it at 15k or under, count me in.
Good deal lease, go for it. After 2 or 3 years, if you like it , buy it. If you don’t like it, return it. Nothing to loose
You've given an excellent perspective once again. Great job Jon. Thank you.
Thanks. I tried to dig a bit deeper than just adding to the hype that they only got 2 stars.
Vinfast's biggest problem is the price. Who would buy this when it is more expensive than tesla.
I still think if they had brought the bargain pricing they'd be selling a lot more.
Agreed 100%. Coming in priced against Tesla, Hyundai, and Nissan was a non-starter.
True: They’ll sell as many as they can make priced at $15-20k. They don’t seem to understand that EV’s are a commodity now. They need to buy their way into the market the way the Koreans did in the 80s and 90s.
@@BillLaBrie Well, they are planning on bringing the VF3 here, and while it's a small 2-door City-SUV and I think it'll be a hit based on it's looks, it's range is miserable. Like a Leaf or 500e could lap it. Still, they'll sell some if they get the price super competitive.
Vinfast good , more than tesla??¿? I don't know what are you talking about???? You're lied????????
Xe vinfat rất rất tốt và an toàn
So exactly what’s it really good at? Absolutely nothing. Maybe a good competitor in another market if it was cheap but not here and it’s not cheap. The NA EV market has now become one of “go big or go home” or as Detroit has recently found out, go broke or go hybrid.
It's not exactly doing well in markets where it has to go up against an onslaught of Chinese EVs.
Makes you wonder if they've gone too deep too soon.
Vinfast is very bad. In Vietnam, sales are very low, they have to force Vingroup employees to buy, give as gifts when selling houses, set up many companies to rent Vinfast cars to boost sales,... especially the Green Taxi company. Vinfast cars having software errors, broken front axles, stopping in the middle of the road,... are common in Vietnam. Anyone who complains will be reported to the police.😅
@@NeXMaX VinFast lacks its own core technology and is heavily dependent on components from China. Many of its suppliers in China are not actually leading in the industry. Essentially, VinFast uses technology that is less advanced compared to mainstream Chinese EVs, sells at higher prices, and is therefore not competitive.
Vinfast is everything wrong with a company meaning to do everything right. I still prefer them than BYD though.
Ok McDonalds thanks for saying something
Have you seen a BYD? Light years ahead mate
@@LouAntonioGiordanoYou’d hope so. After they stole so many European engineers like Hyundai did. Vinfast is starting from the ground up. I support the latter initiative.
Has anyone seen the BYD crash tests? I thought not.

The open air frontal crash test seems a american 70s or 80s crash test of CalsPan or similar, from the images, type a crash with a 1979 Impala or Beetle...
I only buy the best (that I can afford) for my family! 😊
Wouldn't touch any car from Vietnam with a barge pole.
Scoring anything under 5* in a NHTSA frontal impact test in 2024 is......bad news. It's about as bad as that MG5 that failed a frontal impact test because it didn't have seatbelt tensioners, as there's a general expectation that practically any competent new car is going to ace a frontal impact these days, so to get less than that is definitely an eyebrow raiser.
Not gonna lie, I've seen enough from them to make me stay pretty far away from the brand and its products, at least until they can convince me that they've turned multiple corners.
Doesn't help that anything VinFast attracts both fired-up haters and (almost certainly) paid shills. Yep, that definitely inspires confidence in a brand. /S
It seems that you are open minded in your evaluation. Not a lot of that going on these days.
5:25 Đánh giá tổng thế là 5 sao ! mày thích hay không kệ mẹ mày ! Bởi tư duy bảo thủ thì không có mày VinFast vẫn tiến về phía trước !
All new start ups go through these bad PR/manufacturing issues at first. I just hope they can be nipped in the bud before it sinks the companies reputation in markets where it's not firmly established like North America because we need affordable Asian imports of all kinds but especially BEV's! And if not from China? Where??? I don't see any other affordable automakers from the region trying besides BYD... Personally I am still down for a VF3 if and when it gets released here. I see tons of ASEAN bloggers going gaga over it for clickbait of all kinds but none outside the region as of yet...

Just curious, where are these cars being sold?
I don't know if they have sold any cars, but there is a Vinfast dealership in Cary NC. They are supposedly building a manufacturing plant nearby, but all the news about it in 2024 is about them pushing back the start up year.
Sweet! Even when the driver or passenger is guaranteed to get an injury they still get one star! 😂
Star from 0 to 5 and 4 star is bad? I dont get it 😅
Seems that you are a bit open minded in your evaluation. Not a lot of that going on these days...
Wow, you really got into the weeds on this one, but nicely done and very informative. This has me wondering about the status of the facility Vinfast is looking to build here in NC. If it hasn't been canceled, how much more bad news will it take to kill it off?
As I recall the facility has been pushed back to 2026? I might be off on that.
As for killing them off, geez, I don't know. Sales are low but they're expanding dealerships. They're just really starting to bring the VF9 here.
While the online chatter is they, and the parent company, are already bankrupt they're just playing money games in a race against time, I do believe they must be rushing to get less expensive models (VF7-VF3) here hoping sales will reach a critical point and start making money. That remains to be seen.
Can they continue to finance losses until profitability? I don't know but I'm increasingly skeptical. Their benefit/cost ratio is poor. I also wonder if where the designs come from start to matter. There's been a lot of online talk about the fact the VF8 is Chinese components, and the VF3 is, I think, supposed to be a Geely design. If true and it ever hits the mainstream press, watch out for the anti-China backlash.
Will they hire Vin Diesel to be a spokesman?
It would have been nice having car mfg. here in NC.
It could still happen, but the headwinds continue to grow against them.
Vinfast was pretty clearly a massive industrial scam for years now. The NC government throwing money at an obvious scam was their own fault.
Vinfast making nearly no cars, the ones they did build being bad and when they went public randomly exploding in value should have been a parade of red flags
What is the status of Cannoo? I thought they were DOA but saw some positive press within the last week?
Heck if I know. I follow it pretty closely and they seem to be constantly on the verge of bankruptcy, they're promising *again* to start production (maybe next year? Maybe this?), they've delivered a few vehicles to the State... and somehow just-in-time money comes in from somewhere.
I fear by the time they start building they'll already be out of date. I believe strongly they'll ignore their consumer orders and focus on delivery vans for possibly years as well.
@AllCarswithJon well in my humble opinion, delivery vans and post office vehicles are a good application for the current EV technology. And halt personal vehicle development until the battery technology is resolved.

A pet hate here _hence the essay, sorry!_ Dunno about US, but AU's "just trust me bro" testing company, ANCAP, is broken & irrelevant. Firstly, trucks have stupidly lower standards, despite market dominance. But not just trucks.
Cars [eg the 2020 Mustang] can get 3 stars in both front & rear occupant safety crashes, then companies can just add sketchy tech until they get "5 stars". ANCAP ratings are pure marketing crap. I'd still avoid strapping myself into a Vinfast ofc.😂
Crash test of Toyota Raize is one star and MG 5 is zero star
Chinese cars manufacturers should expand into the USA market
Nope! Don’t want chinese stuff
Idk man buying stuff from a expansionist government doesn't seem like a good idea not to mention that all Chinese companies must be partly owned by the government or state owned
2:07 you don't see the whole scenery. Left of vinfast is truck container. Right of vinfast is edge of flower area so close. The truck turned right without watching, then press vf8 hit edge of flower block.
The weight of the VF8 isn't going to effect these tests.
the heavier the vehicle the more the barrier could move, so deceleration rate will decrease, if the barrier does move. I doubt it does.
Weight could also cause the front of the vehicle to smash more. That would decease the decelleration rate, with more leg smashing.
Barrier is immovable, as in all crash tests. Weight of tested vehicle matters, that’s why they are classified into different classes depending on weight and types. Within a group, a heavier car would be at a disadvantage.
I guess not so fast after all
Two star for the passage is bad. Simple lack of engineering.
At 1:53 in NHSTA Frontal Crash Test clip, Tester turned Forward Collision Warning OFF. So, NHSTA reports "FAIL TEST". Haha
Really? Haha để tôi xem lại
I wouldn't buy this car, but I don't see how it's any worse than a GM
they still can improve the car after the test tho, thats what purpose for the test . "to make car company built more better car"
I dont read into safety standards where it US or Australian, not good if system fails but i have questions on airbags with some crashes. Jon i now excepting going buy old 93 VR Holden Commodore Berlina sedan with efficient 3800 V6 bulletproof 4 speed automatic, to make more efficient cold air intake, headers, exhaust, up grade brakes, car had no ABS, no Airbags nor stability control but had cruise control, climate control, i dont need anything else.
Side note silly government release details of BYD ute before BYD release it, price AUD $68,000 i think top spec, towing 2500kgs so not 3.5t like Ford ranger.
Government from start of next year will fine car companies for offering electric versions cars/trucks, i sick of electric push into cars/trucks even i can't afford new one.

There are no shortcuts in industrial development. Countries with strong automotive industries have all previously been strong in heavy industry. This is true for countries like the UK, the US, Japan, South Korea in the past, and now China, without exception. A country that only focuses on light industry but dreams of overtaking others to suddenly become a powerhouse in the automotive industry is simply daydreaming
