I love the livery of the prototype, it reminds me of the light version of the blue pullman sets. All they need now is to build another power car for the other end.
your perseverance paid off - well done and glad you got to see it in the convoy move today - deffo in the right place to get smoked out and bet that smelt great :)
Now that's a Valenta! Nice one Darren. Nice to see the loco running light engine too. I had a similarly smoky experience on exactly the same spot, but mine was a class 31 a few years back.
How could they make a train that is so claggy, even back in the 70s when the 125 was being developed, and think 'yea this is okay' to pump out so much reek?! I know we're all green an environmental these days but the clag, even back then must have raised eyebrows?? Haha. Brilliant video :)
As load increases, the Napier turbocharger starts to spin up; first a low whistle, getting higher and higher until you get the scream, then higher still until just a hiss. The turbo shaft produces 750bhp.
Great vid here, but I think next time you should consider which way the wind is blowing and film from there, that way the film wont be blocked out with all the clag LOl, just a thought for next time .
Most countries use at least some Diesel traction e.g. for branch lines. Note the video shows the prototype power car which is now an obsolete design, the IC125 power cars were re-engineered around the year 2006 and MTU 16V4000 R41R engines fitted. The German MTU engines are far more environmentally friendly and produce no visible smoke (while still in good condition). The MTU engines are interlocked so that starting the engine is not possible unless the engine has been electrically heated up to about 25 degrees C (from memory). If interested you can see & hear an MTU engine starting if you search for this video …… `Great Western Railway 43156 Engine Startup at Camborne'
Love that screaming starter motor, the old Paxman coughing knocking belching oily grey smoke like a 40 a day grandad. But hey it is a big english bulldog diesel, and allowed to cough and fart, least it is not a pissy little diesel made in Korea and more suited to powering a sex toy out of an Anne Summers Catalogue.
I believe that is the ultimate goal, along with acquiring a production HST power car too. Well worth joining the 125 Group and supporting their efforts.
Had to laugh when somebody coughed! Did Valentas misbehave like that when cold even when new? - if so I would have thought that the media would have pounced on this except for the fact that most people in the UK are prejudiced for the IC125 and Valentas. Presumably the design predates the use of preheaters.
Your XPT has an update of the Valenta - the VP185. I understand that when stone cold those engines also `vape' alot since the design predates preheaters. I don't know whether the fleet of XPTs will be re-engined with German MTUs eventually (like the UK HSTs) but these I believe do have preheaters and start like a dream. Although MTU is German the last time i checked they were owned by Rolls Royce Power Systems AG.
Martindyna I live in a different state and don't know much about them. I remember that they got new engines though. Australia is also in the dark ages when it comes to trains too, the politicians love roads.
Yes, you may be remembering when the engines were changed from Paxman Valenta to Paxman VP185s. Although not liked by most train enthusiasts, MTU engines are far greener than either of them. I don't agree that the IC125 is the dark ages now the power cars have been re-engineered with MTU and other changes although in terms of speed obviously you are correct (but there again I like old British Rail stuff). Our government has recently decided to run a line under London from West England to East London so the IC125 is being replaced on that line (by Hitachi dual mode electric / Diesel trains) since Diesel is unsuitable to run in tunnels. What a waste of money!!!
it starrs with difficult,,not all the cylinder s work,,,if you hear,,only one or two works at the beginning,,,the huge clag(fuel vaporizated) are from the cylinders that doesnt ignite the fuel,,,when more cylinders ignite the fuel and the engine warms the clag decreases,,,,,warning""This clag is flammable,,,many locos eshaust flames during cold start!!
Mr Deltic 15,,at the end of the video, when the engine warmed the huge clag attenuates a lot,,the detonation heared at the beginning is the fuel that explodes into the cylinder,,not ignites gradually,as the diesel cycle.
"No smoking at this station"
Class 43 and 41's: Hold my clag for a second,
Outstanding amount of smoke
I love the livery of the prototype, it reminds me of the light version of the blue pullman sets. All they need now is to build another power car for the other end.
Now that's what I call vaping.....massive clouds.
your perseverance paid off - well done and glad you got to see it in the convoy move today - deffo in the right place to get smoked out and bet that smelt great :)
Wow! when you said smoked out.....you really meant it!! Lovely, glad you had a great day
Wow it started then cut out but 2nd start up stayed running great action from that Valenta
Very good shots. Certainly a lot more smoke than when it was started up on the Friday morning of the MNR's gala the previous weekend!
"You int seen me......roight !!!" Had that for haulage at MNR bloody brilliant!!
1:07 Nice smoke screen. Military might be interested.
Now that's a Valenta! Nice one Darren. Nice to see the loco running light engine too. I had a similarly smoky experience on exactly the same spot, but mine was a class 31 a few years back.
Great video, looking forward to seeing it tomorrow.
A random lady in station: hello?
There's usually one somewhere ;-)
Wow....Smoke in Bucket loads....Great video...Steve.-:)
Great video.
Great video Darren.
That smokes more than i do.
What a livery is the reverse BR blue and grey!
Not the best for keeping clean, but it certainly stands out and suits the HST like so many liveries do.
A normal person would of thought that's a steam train
LOL your right
Rhys' Trains Would HAVE. NOT OF
So I guess you are not normal
Rhys' Trains WOULD HAVE not would of....
LOL
Smokin.....loving the cough at 49 secs 😀
not surprised it needed fuel after that start, I think you must have swallowed a couple of litres when it started up :p
Epic clag!
Well worked out day for you Darren.
Cameraman loving the smell of all the diesel smokes. It smells amazing
There's a vid of an EMT VP185 cold starting at Leeds and it sounds identical to this Valenta.
The EMT power cars are the only decent sounding HST power cars left now that the others are all MTU sadly.
VP is a heavily improved Valenta, at the end of the day :)
Blimey that was a hard start compared to the one we got at the MNR!
How could they make a train that is so claggy, even back in the 70s when the 125 was being developed, and think 'yea this is okay' to pump out so much reek?! I know we're all green an environmental these days but the clag, even back then must have raised eyebrows?? Haha. Brilliant video :)
Thankfully it's just raw diesel at that point, although from other vids they seem to like a drop of oil in the combustion chamber also 😳😂
Maybe the Class 41 deserves to win at the clag complication show
Nope they didn't give a crap back then
Great video.☺️
Thanks very much.
Is that amount of smoke normal, startup and when running or does it need repairs which took it offline
Euro 6 compliant :)
LOL :-)
Most certainly!
🤣😅😆
HST COMPLIANT
I love the sound of injector knock 😌
A mad smoky cold start up. Smoke, like a steam engine after fire up
Why is there not the deafening whine that I remember of the production HST's? It sounds almost like a modern diesel (slow rev's and quiet)
orange appled it's the prototype. It's actually quite different from production HSTs
orange appled I'm guessing the prototype had no turbocharger?
i'm guessing that the turbocharger never really kicked in because they weren't pushing it that hard
It’s only idling and with no load on the Engine. The screaming only happened when 24psi of turbo charged air pressure applied and at 27000 rpm 😉
As load increases, the Napier turbocharger starts to spin up; first a low whistle, getting higher and higher until you get the scream, then higher still until just a hiss. The turbo shaft produces 750bhp.
Clean air zone exempt?
Shame we don't hear that sound anymore.
Needs more choke
Smokey start indicates a very cold engine , notice the smoke has disappeared after a short while !
Impressive!!
Very impressive nice video😁😁😁
If Redex made Carlsberg, this would probably be the best train start ever
Very good, I like that :-)
Great vid here, but I think next time you should consider which way the wind is blowing and film from there, that way the film wont be blocked out with all the clag LOl, just a thought for next time .
I know it's running and all, but why won't they push it to go as fast as a production Class 43?
Is it fragile?
Is this the loco AP used to record sounds for their class 43 valenta enhancement pack?
Never seen a Class 41... I never knew they existed even though I know SO MANY TRAINS! Unusual train have to say.
well they were the prototype HSTs and the class is only 1 strong these days
One set, two power cars, one of the two is dead
Super video
I went to the gala on a saterday
This the one sat in york ???
I thought it was at Shildon?
Everyone love a bit of Trash and Crag
I wonder if 41001 is mainline registered and is permitted to be ran on the mainline
slenderman7676 Rblx not at the moment. Whether it ever will..who knows..
Well that's the goal
In what time u live there on that island ? Diesel trains, OMG !!
Most countries use at least some Diesel traction e.g. for branch lines. Where do you live
holy crap could've created a tornado with that amount of smoke
Pretty much all that was missing from this shot!
Pielstick?
AH! the seldom used invisibility shield ! Makes James Bonds DB7 Aston look a bit ordinary.
🤣🤣😂😅😆 That one made my day! 🤣😅😆 It's camouflage technology!!!!
Was that a Valenta engine?
Yes
they should make the prototype hst mainline certified
I believe that is the ultimate goal, along with acquiring a production HST power car too. Well worth joining the 125 Group and supporting their efforts.
thanks for that i bare that in mind
Smoking like a steam locomotive. An early 41 diesel unit, that should on display at York nat rail museum.
William Radford It was orriginally, but then they decided to ressurrect it.
sounds almost like Pielstick engine. Pielstick 12 PA-4-185
I will have to take your word for that :-)
U still live in the 50 / 60 's ??
This thing was built in 1972
this is a new train?
+intersezioni yes, they will use it on HS2 when there isn't any overhead power ;)
It was new at one point.
(1972)
Great footage mate hopefully down 09/04/16
Cough!!! Fully smoke like this.... I cannot breath in cause make me heart attack!
You should've been standing where I was!
Lol!!!
APU must be in place here , it will extend the engine / Human life and save time.
I'm not familiar with APU?
It's small diesel engine with alternator to charge battery and heat lube oil and coolant some times combine with a small boiler .
APU standing for auxiliary power unit I presume?
I never knew Class 41s engines were Volkswagen.
My condolences to the cameraman
Euro VI compliant? Methinks not. :)
Huff, puff and chuff!
Holy shit that's what I call smoke
Gotta be the smokiest loco I've ever filmed, beating any steam loco!
The smoke effects might have been a bit overdone
Nice! :)
Had to laugh when somebody coughed!

Presumably the design predates the use of preheaters.
It's not unique to 41001 or HST's though, there's quite a few cold start movies like this on TH-cam with Class 37, Class 50, Class 56, and more.
It's a marine engine, so I'd say yes
Dam it I filled up with unleaded by mistake !!
Thought it was red diesel! :-)
Where's the train? Ps under all that smoke lol
So was I - cough, cough!
yes cold start
Can't beat them.
I always thought it was EEs that started one pot at a time!
If they did that in Australia the Enviromental Protection Agency would give them a huge fine and ground the engine.

*MINION TRAIN*
*MINION TRAIN*
the engine Sound look like ge u18c
I'll take your word for it :-)
Wow
Did you have a face mask on .
Keynsham-Trains now you need it!
Mega
Set smoke screens to maximum, no photographs it's classified.
who needs f***ing kettles! Brilliant stuff🙂
Exuse me Mr HST but you forgot ya coaches
Its like a munter Minion
Constructed 1972.
it starrs with difficult,,not all the cylinder s work,,,if you hear,,only one or two works at the beginning,,,the huge clag(fuel vaporizated) are from the cylinders that doesnt ignite the fuel,,,when more cylinders ignite the fuel and the engine warms the clag decreases,,,,,warning""This clag is flammable,,,many locos eshaust flames during cold start!!

Hey no smoking allowed
Paxman clagtastic!
Do love a paxman valentia
See all
Now that's clag.
More like, the Smoking Valenta
Habemus papam!
needs a service if it's that bad
Just clearing its throat after standing idle for a while.
Is it just me who thinks it looked good?
No, I think quite a few liked the look of it :-)
It looks kinda cute lol
Clag At it’s finest
How exactly could a designed look at this and think it looks good ? The 43s look decent, but this front end is hideous.
Wow the prototype looks weird
It's a bit different to the finalised version for sure.
Ahhh where's everyone gone cough splutter ahhhh cough clag ughhh
Mind if I smoke cough cough nothing like diesel exhaust through your lungs
It was a bit cough inducing, but I stood my ground for the movie!
