    It's great to see a piece of modern railway history brought back to life. Now I can't wait to see and hear it screaming down the mainlines, Bring back some childhood memories of screaming Valenta's flying by

    We went on the prototype at ruddington few years ago before it was moved to Locomotion.
    Definitely felt nostalgic riding onboard with the legendary 41001. Stunning piece of engineering by no means.

    I used to build the Valenta power units, so watching these clips brings back good memories. You can never forget the scream of the Napier turbocharger spinning at 26 000rpm!

    I regularly used to get a Valenta 125 from Reading to paddington from '91 to '95 during my time at university.
    You could hear so many frequencies from that engine, predominantly the blade frequency of the turbos (the whistle) and the low-end exhaust throbbing of the V12.

  • @CyclicPilot
    @CyclicPilot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    Not only is the engine sound spot on, that has to be the most evil sounding horn I've ever heard... (augmented 4th interval ftw, most 2 tone horns are a minor 3rd)

    I don’t remember this one. I only remember the early 125’s as having a longer front and in the BR yellow n dark blue livery from the ‘This is the age of the train’ adverts. In Oct 1982 I remember the tilting train, the APT. I was on holiday on the Grand Union Canal and in many places the rails crossed over the canals. I was so excited to see an APT but it was the only time I ever saw one.

    I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..

    when I worked Loughborough signal box [ I was a signalman for over 33 years ] One of the other signalmen could remember hearing and seeing the trains hammering over the great central bridge.It was the fastest line with signaling system far in advance of the midland line until the managers of the midland got hold of it and shut it

    • @risvegliato

      yes. the great central was the last main line to be constructed around 1899 with bigger loading gauge and faster speeds with straighter lines, more like an american railway, Then they closed it and dismantled it 60 years later...

      This was it's first proper run with a rake of Mk3 stock and production power car, so the driver was taking it a bit easy to start(and waiting to open up for the gallery on the bridge), plus the maximum speed on heritage railway lines is 25mph.

    Why didn't the train run it at top speed? It's not like the train was going to fall apart...

      @jimik89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Heritage railways in the UK usually have a 25 mph speed limit by law. Thats why they cant run at full speed

      what was the point of expending all that time and effort to make it go 140+ then?!

    • @themightyzanoss8409

      well it very much could have fallen apart

      @@MXVDJ heritage railways are not mainline, that’s why they went to the effort to design them to do 125mph and why it ran 143mph no problem.

      Just a tad! Was her first proper run in anger though really, although I did get even more smoked out by her at Wansford on the NVR later!
