HAHAH i was one of the 'guys in the elevator'. was the first day of QuakeCon1997. this is absolutely flippin stellar that he mentioned that elevator meeting haha. much
Carmack said id was the best place for him to be working, with the best things to be working on.... until Oculus showed up. If you read Masters of Doom, it's clear that his greatest aspiration was making virtual worlds like reality. No wonder he jumped ship like the wind.
Id’s team fall apart during quake development. With John Romero bailing first after he got into disagreement with Carmack, who basically called Romero lazy/not invested enough at that time
"John Carmack, who was the main driving force in you becoming a developer?" And he goes off on a 10 minute tangent about everything but that. Gotta love that.
It is rather telling that he immediately talked about his grandparents when asked about his influences, and their gift of the encyclopedic hard copy. Carmack is a gift to the world!
@1:15:56 i was waiting for people to give him a round of applause.. and i'm glad someone started it. coz' john really deserves it at that point... imagine someone as smart as he is working for our common hobby.
I think what the original poster is referring to is the split in the game playing community between the 'casual' and 'hardcore' (the latter term is still subject to change and causes friction internally amongst this group). It's an artificial split really, but for the people that regard themselves as 'hardcore' gaming really IS a lifestyle choice, it's an activity that defines them as much as religion, music, occupation, etc.
So many concerned fans about the direction of the company and unfortunately the fears seem to have come true. Carmack the chief engine programmer left the company and Bethesda has acquired the company. While some things were done right in Doom and Quake Champions, there was a ton of things that was poorly implemented. Doom's terrible menu and interface left many people frustrated. The lack of customization comes to mind. For example the infamous mouse delay in Doom which seem to be unfixable. When it comes to Quake Champions, many things were done right, but unfortunately so many things were done poorly too. I get that a company has to make money on it's en devours, but seeing how Quake 4 was left in the dust and disappointed in terms of it's multiplayer play ability, you would think that the company would do it right with their next Quake iteration. Quake is a gem, a precious one at that. And to see one of the few companies that held on to their integrity for as long as ID did, eventually giving in to the big bad corporations is to me heart felt.
I thought Kevin Cloud started prior to 1995. According to Masters of Doom he joined just prior of id moving to Texas. Edit: After hearing Carmack, I think they got Kevin and Tim's name cards mixed up. :/
Bottles of water at gaming events in 2011 - on the floor, out of the way. Bottles of water at gaming events in 2020 - on a stand, in front of the speakers face.
Carmack really loves to talk, and it's cool, because I love to listen. He really have smart things to tell to the people. Its a shame that I don't have the ability to visit QuakeCon, even I am not that fanatic fan of ID, but I appreciate their contribution to the genre and game industry itself.I remember that I first heard of them during my school computer classes ,I guess it was 1999 or 2000, they were demos of Doom and Doom 2, they were that first games I ever played on PC.
Oh and Carmack has outdone himself a shit-ton of times. Outside of creating a genre, he optimized an engine similar to Mario for PC (for smooth screen-scrolling), he utilized texture mapping, and done plenty for revolutionizing lighting in games. Not to mention rocket-building as a hobby. What are Zuckerberg's hobbies?
You people babbling about what you read here and there about John Romero should at least make the effort to hear his side of the story. Look up "Matt Chat" with John Romero from 51 to 55. He tells the whole story of ID and it's pretty awesome. It won't solve the mystery, they will always be the only ones to know what happened, but it's too easy to just go "Romero is a selfish bastard" when all you know is what has been the buzz on the net. Also, Romero had tons of talent regardless of Daikatana.
The problem with consoles is with the publishers that are in it solely for the money, like activision; and the console companies themselves who limit game design and capability so much.
i know they have to look after consoles for sales, but pc's are more potentially powerful. i understand that some people like the easy run around with a xbox 360 or a ps3 but the power of a pc is much more overwhelming. But it cost more. So cost for a near experience from the best?, well that's up to the user.. illl stick to 3 580's
Great speech, but people don't forget one thing - without PCs - consoles wouldn't exist. But one thing they have missed in the speech is that consoles have degraded PC gamers intensively. Cheers
how can we look back at ids past without Romero, hall, and Adrien Carmack on stage with john Carmack and Kevin Cloud, shit i'd even throw Sandy Peterson in there too..... i dont really like America McGee tho.... also Tim Willits is ok
Wow, now i really hate, how is ID software underrated, without ID there is no valve, cods. Without ID there will be only Unreal tournament and game based on that engine. ID just rocks.
@CrzyFooL67 Yeah that is some astounding stuff. Those PC scum that pirated their games so much, that it enabled their company parking lot to look like an exotic sports car dealership.
who the fuck is romero and why all carmack vids theres romero in the comments, I feel theres a damn conspiracy story on the back of this romero one, can someone enlight me??
Romero didn't help at all with Quakes code. Quake is there only good game that is alive today. All John Carmack their. Number one competitive game. But...I like Willits, as he made most of the maps for their games. And they're good maps. Romero was mostly doom stuff. But they did good without him. Still are IMO. I am nervous for Doom 4 though. After seeing Rage. Also Hollenshead did quit id Software recently. I never thought he did much for the company except talk about them in interviews lol.
@KoRL12 lol leaving id software after making such a huge hits, saying to his "fans" that "romero is about to make you his bitch", using the same engine that carmack made he makes daikatana in few years after leaving id software and it totally sucked. Instead he could of kept on working with carmack and make even more jaw dropping games. Romero was just selfish bastard. even if I give credit to him for doom and quake, carmack was the one who brought the technology of PC gaming :]
John Carmack sporting a Quake II shirt like a boss.
John is definately my idol! I ALWAYS learn stuff from him whenever he opens his mouth. Such a great person.... I wish I could meet him.
John's wearing the Quake II shirt... The first online FPS for me... 1998-1999....
I'd like to see Romero and Carmack working together again.
So would I.
They put the Tim Willits banner on Kevin Cloud and viceversa, look at 3:30 lmao
Carmack is such a solid dude.
John Carmack; the god king of the FPS.
HAHAH i was one of the 'guys in the elevator'. was the first day of QuakeCon1997. this is absolutely flippin stellar that he mentioned that elevator meeting haha.

@@pieteb_nl Not to mention John Carmack fired the employees who were more in line with Romero, such as American McGee.
3:26 This is Tim Willits, not Kevin Cloud...
Great talk, lots of funny and inspiring stories!
Carmack's mind must be a wonderful place of some sort of organized chaos. Great panel!
They mixed up Tim Willits and Kevin Cloud. At *QuakeCon.* Impressive.
I wish John Romero was still working with ID software. :(
"John Carmack, who was the main driving force in you becoming a developer?" And he goes off on a 10 minute tangent about everything but that. Gotta love that.
It is rather telling that he immediately talked about his grandparents when asked about his influences, and their gift of the encyclopedic hard copy. Carmack is a gift to the world!
Ferrox Glideh His parents were real dicks, so I am not surprised.
well, I bet that he will be a pretty fine DAD, and he will advance accordinglyl
Ahh so awesome hearing Carmack retell stuff from Masters of Doom.
@1:15:56 i was waiting for people to give him a round of applause.. and i'm glad someone started it. coz' john really deserves it at that point... imagine someone as smart as he is working for our common hobby.
I wish more people had asked questions about, y'know, the actual history of id. Otherwise, a fun watch. These guys are very easy to listen to.
Wow 0 Dislikes... Cuz everybody loves QuakeCon!!
Oh God. .I want a new Quake game developed by id so damn much! ! !
"Donna to the Rescue" :D

the bald guy is tim willits and kevin cloud is the one in blue shirt
transcribe audio works pretty well in this video!

I'm all for something like quake 1. bring back the style. bring back the levels with statistics at the end. bring back the nail gun.
Is it just me or did they reverse the names for Kevin Cloud and Tim Willits?
I can hardly wait for John Carmack's keynote for this year.
I remember the car contest of some previous Quake Con. XD
Great men
Yeah, I know it :) Dunno about newer CoDs, but I think Cod 1 and maybe 2(?) is running modified Quake 3 engine
All I heard: “Zherp zheap zhurp zhip zhurp zhip”
I thought Kevin Cloud started prior to 1995. According to Masters of Doom he joined just prior of id moving to Texas.

@Jagethemage So, why exactly were you in the elevator? lol
37:00 18 years is a heck of a "temp" job
Bottles of water at gaming events in 2011 - on the floor, out of the way.
Bottles of water at gaming events in 2020 - on a stand, in front of the speakers face.
probably because the upload size mustve been too large.
Romero should've been there :(
@TerakJK sorry what asked the guy at 0:46:15? I don't understand.. can you write it?
@JanicM They were actually laid-off, even fired.
Man I was also day dreaming of working at Id, but texas is so freaking far away from Montreal :)
John I'll meet you one day!
That's not Kevin Cloud, that's Tim Willits.
@inund8 John Romero was laid off from id software in 1996.
made in 2011 and released it 480p ? is this the future then?
amazing question bro
no john romero?
LEGEND!
Carmack really loves to talk, and it's cool, because I love to listen.

God bless Quake 3
These name captions are all wrong with Willits and Cloud :/
I would appreciate some info about Doom 4.
@inund8 JR has not been with id software for a long long time
wasn't random. It started out as a website for college kids to share notes.
@Taramiable Lol, I was just about to point that out.
@circulation211 yes but if its 20 years of id then he should be there
Oh and Carmack has outdone himself a shit-ton of times. anybody knows the intro song?
@1Gigas1
Thank him for doom/2 and quake
Big brain
i want to sniff the chair that john carmacks sat in...just knowing his presence was there. im not even gay,
2012 DooM 4 will happen in real life. Thats how epic DooM is =)

Where is doom 4 for my PS3/4? It better feel like doom and not Doom 3.
Nothing they can make will amount to Doom, the best they can do is make DooM 3 way better
Nate Dragland It is doubtful id can even make doom anymore since id stopped being id after doom2. The team changed.
MrApplewine your dream became real, congrats dude! I hope you enjoy the next one
A Rage tattoo WOULD be a mistake.
@CrzyFooL67 You rock.
@1Gigas1
I thought you were going to bring me some info that i didnt know about but now i see you got everything wrong-
@CrzyFooL67 A good question, but you asked the wrong people.
I wouldn't say this is the nerdiest thing ever but... wait, yeah. I would say that.
i know they have to look after consoles for sales, but pc's are more potentially powerful. i understand that some people like the easy run around with a xbox 360 or a ps3 but the power of a pc is much more overwhelming. i need johns shirt
Dude enough about Doom. Unless Doom 4 is something amazing. Quake is gonna be their best game.
look the height of the sits, wtf man, so uncomfortable
Great speech, but people don't forget one thing - without PCs - consoles wouldn't exist. But one thing they have missed in the speech is that consoles have degraded PC gamers intensively. Cheers
Papa Carmack
Our carmack went soft with his kids... AWWW
hello
how can we look back at ids past without Romero, hall, and Adrien Carmack on stage with john Carmack and Kevin Cloud, shit i'd even throw Sandy Peterson in there too..... i dont really like America McGee tho.... also Tim Willits is ok
I'd like to hear Donna' Jackson's reply to that question.
@CrzyFooL67 bro!!!
Wow, now i really hate, how is ID software underrated, without ID there is no valve, cods. Without ID there will be only Unreal tournament and game based on that engine. ID just rocks.
There'd be no Unreal either cos Epic was always just a bunch of thieves.
carmack is a boss nerd
@lefteyefalconeer nice tip am watching them right now :D col to se him telling from thoes periodes :D
@CrzyFooL67 Yeah that is some astounding stuff. Those PC scum that pirated their games so much, that it enabled their company parking lot to look like an exotic sports car dealership.
Turkey dinners. :D
18:43 that sux
I wonder if ID would get mad if someone took their work computers home for the weekend to make games for someone else.
:P
most people cant afford a tricked out pc, they are expensive as fuck
I find all the John Romero comments amusing. Apperantly Daikatana made some people his bitch after all.
In 2015, you don't even have to know how to code to make a game.
a shit game
@Taramiable That lady has no idea what goes on.
who the fuck is romero and why all carmack vids theres romero in the comments, I feel theres a damn conspiracy story on the back of this romero one, can someone enlight me??
