    I’m in the midst of a 3 1/2 day water fast. It was supposed to be a 72 hour fast for autophagy but my eating windows didn’t line up that way. I’m at 75 hours fasted and feeling fine. I usually fast 44:4, eating 4 substantial keto meals per week consuming 125-150 grams of protein on my keto feast days. I’m 61, 5’3” have lost 75lbs in 7 months. I still need to lose 60lbs

      I congratulate you on taking ownership of your health and wellness.
      So many are seriously ill and overweight from the poison that has became “standard” American fare.
      With regard to your approach, are you concerned about sarcopenia, muscle atrophy given your age and the importance of maintaining and building muscle? Does it do a number on your bowels? No issues with stones, yet?

      @@steveaustin1984 Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. No digestive issues with my diet, I eat pumpkin and chia seeds mixed into my Greek yogurt which keeps me regular. I’ve also started wearing a weighted vest to maintain my bone and muscle health.

    1- Day1 to 10: long fasts are encouraged
    2- Day 11 to 16-18 after ovulation: no longer than 15h fasts
    3- after ovulation up to one week before period: power phase longer fasts are allowed
    4- last week of the cycle : nurturing phase no fasting, no intense exercise, eat carbohydrates.

    Great information for other women but I have had a complete hysterectomy so none of this information applies to me. Can you do a video on women who have had hysterectomies and their gallbladder removed?

    Dr. Mindy, I have a conumdrum. I am 77 and still have a cycle, albeit infertile, but it's palpable. All my life it was 28 days like clockwork and in my 60s it changed to 14 days and now in my 70s it has changed to 13 days and, again, like clockwork. I have lost large amounts of weight in the past and I am very prone to gain weight eating carbohydrate. I have been stalled for 3 years. I am on the cusp of diabetes. I started your fasting lifestyle beginning of April. I bought a continuous glucose monitor. I have made a spreadsheet chart of my cycles according to your hormone information in Fast Like a Girl. I have followed the rules of what food to eat and when according to my cycle, I fasted 36 hours once or twice a week and adjusted and varied the hours of IF and fasts. I eat two meals a day for the last 3 years, fasting for 16-18 hours and one 72 hour fast. I can now see what spikes my blood sugar and have eaten accordingly. Now, half way through June, I have not lost any weight. I watched Dr.Bikman who said the only way forward is to first get your fasting insulin level to normal. I had my fasting insulin checked at an American lab (I live in England) and it was 8.2. I am concentrating on getting the insulin level to normal range and eating food that doesn't spike my blood sugar. I don't know what else to do. I need to lose another 5 stones. Can you help me? As a background to my determination, I went on a World Cruise for 4 months in 2019 and lost 2 stone. Probably the only person on board that lost weight!

    PLEASE Dr Mindy talk more about the calorie set point!!!! I’m really struggling to eat more ‘calories’ more food, without putting on weight. It’s so sad. I just don’t understand this concept and need HELP. Thank you 🙏🏻

      The major premise of fasting is that we are not eating less, we are eating less often. Compressing our eating window and elongating our fasting window. The fasting window is where the healing happens. If you do not want to lose weight, you need to eat in your eating window even if you are not hungry. Eat nutrient dense foods. Lots of protein to build up amino acids. More fat, more protein, and more of nature's
      carbs. Fruits, berries, bananas, etc. Eat more of it in your eating window and vary your fasts.

    I forgot to add to my comment below is that no matter how I fast or for how long, I cannot switch to Ketones and become very weak even though I drink beef bone broth with MCT oil twice a day.

    Minerals are so important. I discovered that I was mineral and salt deficient when I started fasting. This was hidden when I was eating every 4 - 8 hours. I didn't change my calorie intake, just the eating window. The standard Western diet seems very nutrient and mineral poor. If I fast longer than 24 hours I now always drink a good quality mineral water (with actual minerals in it).

    I am 59 in post menopause. Have no idea what my cycle would be I never suffered obvious period symptoms so I have no idea what hormones are around and when. I'm trying fasting but not losing any weight and eating well during the eating window. How do I know what fasting times I should do and when.     I made all the mistakes when I started fasting around 8 years ago now. There is so much info out there now which would have saved me from wrecking my metabolism and thyroid then.

    Thank you, Dr. Mindy! I really want to try alternate day fasting, however I still have my cycle. Per your recommendation to keep our hormones happy- is alternate day fasting something menstruating women should avoid at all costs? I have PCOS and thanks to following your fasting recommendations for cycling women, I consistently got my period back every month which I haven’t had in a long time. The only problem is, my cycle is longer, so that window when I’m waiting for my period to come can be 2+ weeks and my weight loss just seems to be at a stand still now which is why I want to try ADF. I’m sure there are other women whose cycles are long and that window before our period holds us back from doing long fasts. I just want to give ADF a try to jumpstart my body again to lose weight.

    I tried IF according to Dr Mindy's advice on the menstrual cycle fasting, but my cycle got longer and longer each month and after 6 months of IF, my cycle days were so long (40+ days from 30 days). I do notice that all comments saying Dr Mindy's advice helped them are coming only from menopausal/perimenopausal women. I'm now starting to wonder if IF is only for women specifically in those category. I had stopped IF since and my period cycle has gone back to normal.

    I am about to start your programe after i read your book. I know birth control can cause quite some damage but I still want to use the hormone vaginal ring for a few months. Does it change the fasting cycle? Should I eat or fast different? Does the programme still work when on hormonal birth control?

      The decision about birth control (pill or vaginal ring, etc) is yours- make the best decision for YOUR body.

    Is it safe to do longer fast while I work (Around 24-72hrs)? And is it also safe to weight train within fasting hours. I work in hospitality so my job is a lot of physical labour. On my two days off I also go to the gym. I break my fast before the gym because I’m worried I won’t have enough energy. I only do around 17hr fasts atm but I would like to do longer ones but I’m too scared to fast longer bc my work schedule so I haven’t tried. Please help me out please 🙏

      Hi there, well it actually depends on how you feel. If you feel like you have more energy while fasting you can continue, as long as you monitor blood sugar and ketones, you're taking enough electrolytes to keep the minerals balanced to avoid headaches, palpitations, and muscle cramps. 🙂

    Dr. Pelz. I purchase your "Fast Like A Girl" for my wife. We've started a 36 hour fast and we reviewed what we can drink during that window. My question about hydrogen water. Is it okay to use the hydrogen tablets. I notice that have dextrose which is a sugar so does that make them off-limits or are they okay to use? and what are your thoughts on Zeolite during a fast to detox Heavy Metals and Toxins.       Thanks for reaching out! If the hydrogen tablets contain dextrose, it's best to avoid them during your fast, as even small amounts of sugar can break your fast. Stick to plain water, herbal teas, and black coffee to stay on track. Best of luck with your fasting journey!

    Does fasting help put autoimmune diseases specially Sjogren's syndrome into remission..?
    I am trying to fast like a girl but there are times (like once in a month or 2 especially on my cycle like Day 3 or 5) where I suddenly get dizzy and feel weakness so everybody around me keeps telling me to quit fasting 😢

    I became anemic after 3 month of doing it, very disappointing, I really believe in it, but have to eat 3x a day, age 63

      how do you know the fasting caused the anemia?
      things can crop up indendantly.
      Have you got a gut absorbtion problem. A slow bleed? i did.

      Iron deficiencies can often be a sign of heavy metal toxicity. Have you had your heavy metal levels checked? Have you taken enough electrolytes and minerals, Iron supplements, and eat food rich in iron.

      @@DrMindyPelz I was doing Keto diet and intermittent fasting , my hot flashes also came back, I think it was shock for my body considering my age 63, my blood work was always perfect my entire life. I don’t know if I had all of those tests done you mentioned above, but now I am on Iron and B12 vitamin per Dr’s advice, as soon as I feel better I will check your book Fast like a girl and try again.       I am 63 and have been fasting for 13 months. My weight loss has been very slow as I have only lost 35lbs so far but my blood work has been amazing. A1C down, fasting I sulin down, blood pressure down and total cholesterol down. I was taking two different meds for blood pressure, meds for high cholesterol, meds for anxiety and depression and reflux. Now taking one tablet a day for blood pressure and hoping to get off that soon. Beginning IF is the best thing I have ever done. I know weight loss is slow but I am in this for the rest of my life and know I will eventually get to where I want to be. 😊

      No, it's the actual bleed. If you spotting before your period, you might have low progesterone.

    im currently 19 hours into a 36 hour fast and I want to chew some sugar free gum to ease the hunger until i hit 24 hours and it will fade. Will it take me out of a fasted state or is it okay?

      It is not recommended. Chewing and the flavor will stimulate digestion. One of the benefits of fasting is to give the body a break from digestion. Chewing gum stimulates an increase in stomach acid. It tends to make you even hungrier. One option that is helpful and doesn't affect blood sugar is peppermint essential oil. It is great to combat fasting bad breath, due to detox.

    I just realised that coffee that I drink ( organic coffee from India) had natural oils in it which I today noticed floating on the top, a very thin layer. It’s a medium roast. Will that not break my fast? I am trying to fast like a girl but end up fasting everyday.

      It could! The only way to know is if you test your blood sugar before and after you consume it. If your blood sugar goes up more than 5-10mg/dl points, it's kicked you out of a fast.

      @@DrMindyPelz I just tested my blood sugar levels. Before was 81mg/dl and tested at 35 minutes after coffee it was 80mg/dl. So I am sorted with coffee. So I want to ask is do I need to now test with different brands of organic coffee or all coffees will work for me ?

    Day 1 to 4=13 hours
    Day 5. =15hours
    Day 6 to 10= 17 hours
    Day 11 to 15=not more than 15 hours
    Day 16 to 18. =15 hours
    Day 19 until bleeding begins.not more than 12 hours
    AM I right?

      No. If you are cycling woman, with no health conditions, follow the Fasting Cycle from my book, Fast Like A Girl.
      Day 1 to 10 = any length fast (you choose)
      Day 11 to 15 = a maximum of 15 hours
      Day 16 to 19 = any length fast (you choose)
      Day 20 until bleed, no fasting

      @@DrMindyPelz I'm pcod . ultrasound reports showed cysts ,i am suffering from hirsutism, acanthasis nigricans,lower belly fat ,heavy hips and thighs but astonishingly my periods are regular. I'm trying to lose weight but fail.
      I'm on medication from 50 days like glucophage, inositol, vitamin d , magnesium supplements.though my engry levels are getting better but my weight and fat is still the same.
      Which fasting window should I select to lose weight?

    l just watched your video earlier today titled "What is autophagy? 5 key strategies to maximize its benefits" which indicated to break the fast with fat & stay under 20 grams of protein. This video states to break the fast with protein & 30 grams of it. This contradicting info makes your message confusing, please clarify. Thank you.

      Thanks for watching @summerlove0426 - it depends on whether the goal is autophagy or muscle building. To maintain autophagy, remain under 20 grams of protein in the eating window. For muscle building, eat at least 30 grams of protein each time you eat every 2 to 3 hours.

    What if you've had a partial hysterectomy..still have ovaries and have no idea what your cycle is?

    Thanks for this information i can now focus on breaking my fast with 30g of protein as you suggested.
    if i include 10g of protein from carbs like bread is that ok? I eat this with meat/fish & cheese. I find this quick & easy and dont want to cook anything at that time. I have protein & veg for my main meal later in the day.
    I like a warm breakfast like toast or porridge but confused as Dr's like u keep saying NO carbs🤔🤐😒. I dont do keto as i like carbs mainly bread potatoes starchy veg & pulses. I try to eat keto & Carnivore for some meals & really enjoy them.
    If any other subs can give me ideas that would be fantastic - i dont eat eggs & seeds
    Thank You for your help Im getting there slowly - i have been fasting for 3 years with info from utube & the late Dr Moseley as from UK😥. I do 15/16 hours &cannot believe i fast to be honest. I enjoy it but - my journey is long & slow as i have a lot of weight to lose. I learn new things every day & making better food choices🙏🏽

      @@DrMindyPelz 🙏🏽 I had my 30g break-fast & loved it. I also have 7 different types as i do struggle with what to have for my 1st meal of the day.
      I have been following this channel for just over a year & got some great tips - leftovers for breakfast a good one too. I must have missed the suggested protein amount but it really makes a difference considering the uk recommends 50g of protein a day. I will aim for 60-70g now as most days i eat twice & my eve meal i find it easier to get a good amount of protein in.
      Im very new to counting protein & its not one of the micros shown on the front of food items here in the uk unless its the new protein mainly over processed & very expensive hyped foods thats happening right now.
      I am looking forward to trying new protein rich recipes & including more fatty fish & beef into my diet.

    So much conflicting advice. That's the issue- in conjunction with hormones are complex and not a one size fits all. Fasting just doesn't work for everyone, period.
    some ppl have very disordered patterns of eating and fasting mirrors restriction. In my personal opinion, I think ppl need to mend their relationship with food first before trying to IF so they are doing this for the ruff right reasons which is what she's trying to bring out.

    One question; can you recommend an accurate ketone breath meter? I hate needles and i am extremely uncomfortable with even the idea of blood ketone tester 😬

      Unfortunately, I don't have any specific brand I can recommend to you. When compared to a blood ketone meter, a breath ketone meter is far less accurate, and the readings tend to vary considerably. It should be regarded more as a guide to whether or not you are in ketosis. So many factors can affect the readings on a breath ketone meter, and they can give wildly varying readings. 🙂

      You need to measure blood sugar before and after to make sure that drinks won't take you out in a fasted state. 🙂
