Maybe some where it's an impromptu party with a DJ bringing their own front end, but because of its lack of old Rekordbox compatibility is not appropriate for installations, rather strictly for DJs who only ever bring their own gear to venues, bedroom DJs, and mobile DJs who do formal events where laptops, controllers, and industrial-looking club gear looks out of place. Great review. As someone who plays out in clubs and festivals regularly with standard CDJ-3000 gear, this double-library headache is really the only detractor from going all-in on this for a portable/home solution. Hope Pioneer address this sooner rather than later so it's better integrated with the club standards and less clunky.
First of all, great HONEST review (as always). I'm a long time user of the Prime 4 and, although it's comparable to the P4, I don't think it has enough to convince me to spend over $1k more for it. In my opinion, this is Pioneer's version of the P4 that still falls short when it comes to streaming and zone output. A OPUS-QUAD vs Prime 4 comparison video would be interesting!
Totally agree, the P4 is 4 years old now, and still IMO more advanced than this Opus, the only thing that it has over the P4 (for now) is the x/y pad, but Denon have teased already that this is on the way. Plus, as you say, the P4 is nearly half the price! The smart money is still on Denon here!
Beautiful blend of form and function. Jog wheel loopers are GREAT. I've set up my Xone K2's to manage looping with the toggle nobs so it's a great surprise to now have them on this deck! COMPLETELY disagree with your aesthetics review and your approach to it. This was my first video to watch from your channel and I just don't understand why you'd open with loads of negative opinions about design. The tonally matched elements are thoughtful and look great. It's good to see some focus on aesthetics other than blinky lights and colors. Regarding the Cues, the 3000's have several ways to enable the cue's, screen and other buttons to perform the pad functions from the XZ and others. I'm sure that exists on this device too. What I love the most is the interface, cue buttons and other elements work to transition aspiring DJ's from a home or travel setup with this machine into a full club CDJ 3000 setup. They translate WAY better than the XZ to 3000. In that regard the price is not a problem if you view this as a combined 900 & CDJ3000 x2. I have ONE CDJ 3000 beside my XZ so I can practice on both, using the Zone K2 to control samples and effects on the other side. So this deck will fantastic in that setup and WAY less expensive and clunky than lugging the full 900/3000 x3 or 4 rig. GREAT JOB PIONEER! This is just what a lot of us need!
I just got one. What a joy! I loved this review because you mentioned what I also felt.... I am lacking the waveform of the 4 decks at the same time... sniffing sniffing. Hopefully this can be upgraded. I am a woman of faith! haha
Yes someone else that see this as the Atari of the dj world. Thanks Mojax. It’s $4599 in Canada which equates to $5200 after taxes. I’ll go buy 2 prime 4’s for that price
Thanks Mojaxx. Only reviewer honest enough to call out the Emperor’s New DJ Controller. Am I also the only person here who didn’t realize the previous ‘four channel’ Pioneer standalone controllers only let you play two at once, how is that even possible!
XDJ-XZ is only 2 channel in standalone. In controller mode (connected to a PC) you can use all 4. But if you are using it as a controller you are better off with DDJ1000 or the replacement FLX10 IMO as its almost identical functionality for half the price.
Great review Mojaxxx!!! It's funny to see how Pioneer is trying to catch up with the 3 years old Denon Prime 4, even with less features and a higher price.
If this was a 4-deck XZ-2, it would be unstoppable, regardless of streaming being available. Its a flex of what they are capable of with standalone technology while at the same time missing a load of DJs with the aesthetic. Black knobs, black ribbed sides and it would already be halfway there visually 🤘
My issue is less the colours and more the shaping. That low front end is definitely looking lower than every other piece of DJ kit you're likely to stack next to it, and the front/side angles make it a pain in the arse to put anything near it too.
I understand why Pioneer went in this direction. I don’t dislike it, but it is not my favorite Pioneer design I have ever seen. This raises the bar for features I hope we see very soon on other Pioneer DJ gear. Something like this makes sense for the fact that they can experiment more and if the product doesn’t sell well, at least they have an opportunity to test features and gauge feedback from real world users to be able to fine tune and improve future products. As a concurrent Traktor user,it’s about time Pioneer introduced a loop encoder. That is my number one favorite new feature introduced on the Opus. I like this new risk taking Pioneer. This is worthy of applause 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.
I think it’s a good step whether you like it or not. And was desperately needed. If you look at the studio world and what hardware and software is available it’s extremely healthy with so many high quality manufacturers pushing the boundaries. I remember the huge back lash when the CDJ1000 first appeared from all vinyl DJs and there beloved Technics which was actually a hifi turntable. Unfortunately Pioneer have dug themselves a big CDJ DJM hole where DJs expect this format. Change is good. Sometimes it does not work initially but when it does it far more exciting.
They have dug themselves a big CDJ DJM hole but IMO there is plenty more digging to do down there. An XZ2 (in other words a 4-channel RX3) would have sold like hot cakes, because it's basically what everyone wants, and it would have required little engineering effort since it would have shared most of the RX3's DNA.
Yep the XZ although popular seems to be the reference. But I didn’t read many reviews where they were overly excited about it’s release. Kind usual feature comparison. I also think many tread carefully when comes to Pioneer DJ. The XZ was also released when people were at home during lockdown causing pent up demand. Add to the mix component supply issues and the constant Chinese lock downs. I am assuming it’s mostly made in China. It’s mostly about business and selling units. Interestingly I have noted a lot of seasoned older DJs don’t even bother with CDJs anymore. Danny Tanaglia springs mind and many more. And this guy has made some incredible records over the years right across the genres.
Another clinical review! A massive leap forward from the aging XZ however I'm with mojax on the aesthetics of the unit but the feature inovation is good to see.
I think it looks great and something different. Proper 4 channel setup that appears super easy to use when compared the XZ is brilliant. I agree with you re the left and right edge shapes and the temp sliders, they may be weird to play with in the dark. Not having Slip mode seems like something they forgot to add in.
I agree this controller is the new way for standalone unit with addition of WIFI and bluetooth + a much better touch screan and a higher MPU chip Those are essentials now these days. It is the best one pioneer dj made yet! As for the style this is entirely subjective! But owning a XDJ XZ when you add another CDJ NXS2 or now 3000 to have a better piece of tech it is also amazing how it perform! When the XDJ XZ release everyone had a lot to say about why they didn't put 4decks standalone with this unit! It never was they idea behind it! The idea was that you expand your setup to 3 or 4 deck with Pro DJ link to get a full famously said Club standards + the possibility to add the DJS-1000! But now that the Opus is release i think that a lot of people who wanted a full 4 Decks standalone units will be happy with this one nice job Pioneer dj ! :)
Man Mojaxx! This is an excellent review! Thank you so much for this. I feel the exact same way you do - I love the tech in this new controller, but I'm not a big fan of how it looks. I've heard rumblings of a Pioneer FLX10 - I'll wait to see what that device is before making a decision. Great review as always!
On a personal matter, I'll cosign what @JaRizzle said below, and I'll add that even tho this is not a piece of gear I would ever buy (perfectly happy with my new 1200MK7's, s9, and Rev7), but I always enjoy and respect your product reviews regardless of whether or not it's gear I'm shopping for. Always much appreciation Mojaxx!
It took almost five years for Pioneer to make a standalone four channel controller to compete with the old Prime 4 from Denon, yet they don't get it right at all. I like some of the features, but the unpractical shape, layout, colors, jogs, the unfinished mixer "a la Numark" without the white dots in the knobs or level lines in the faders are all together justification enough to not buy it, besides the price is not in line with the final product. Wasn't even better to release the XZ2 with all those improvements? I would have paid those 3200 bucks. This Opus thing is a Frankenstein's monster. A hideous behemoth in my opinion. Some may love it, but not me. I'll go for the FLX10. Great review as always, Mojaxx.
Interesting perspective on the aesthetics. I’m pretty fussy myself, and I think this thing looks beautiful! I also have yet to see one in person. Will soon find out though!
I have said it once but going forward you are always so good at your reviews and honesty you are so good at what you do and of coarse the brim is spot on cheers mate!!
If this is successful in sales, it will heavily influence future pioneer product designs as well. Even tho the A9 just came out and CDJ-3000 barely 2 years old, I suspect the sequels to these products will borrow some of the styling and features from this
Hi Mojaxx, did you ever follow-up with your Pioneer Dj rep to see if the following will ever be addressed.. Like Zone Out functionality (Automix) as found on n the Prime 4 or the chances of adding the MOBIUS FX? Also, why no fader start for beat juggling as found on the flx10 and again, also on the Prime 4? That’s a big miss! Thank you! 😊
This is the only dj gear channel I subscribe to. Mojaxx has the best delivery for critiquing, and is always very comprehensive and detail oriented. That being said, not a fan of this at all. I'll keep holding out for whatever Denon Prime series comes up with next. Greetings from Canada!
I'm excited to see the feature sets on standalone gear expanding, clearly touch-enabled devices are a godsend for that. However... this is bad news for blind/visually impaired users. Back in the RX/RX2 days, you basically had a system you could learn by heart, plug it into any PA and things would work as expected. If you could afford it, this took a lot of stress away from day-tu-day DJing. I hope Pioneer and Denon consider putting accessibility tools on their touch-enabled devices soon. Not having channel select options on the device for effects basically makes this a no-go for me, unless Pioneer puts some kind of screen reading softwar (or a remapping option perhaps) into the onboard software.
In essence, yes, though I do a lot of prep in terms of how I name my files, so that assuming I know my own material, I'll have an easier time locating what I need in the moment.@@AiMaTay
I'm a Dennon guy, but I REALLY like this. The 3 screens and color scheme look premium to me. Yeah, it's got significant shortcomings, but it dazzles me. Blinded by the lights. It's given me pause in assembling my ultimate setup.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - Denon is finally the leader, it's obvious because with this mixer, it's clear Pioneer like what Denon did and are now forced to follow and copy...Can only be good for all us DJ's... Great vid as always.
Good stuff, you did however forget to mention you can now assign loops of any length to the cue pads which is an awesome feature. I agree this thing looks weird but works fantastic.
Im getting some interesting classic Vestax vibes here … I remember going through their catalogs as a teen … they were so forward thinking … imagining a CEO’s office when decks sitting unobtrusive in the background … that’s what’s im getting from this one.
Totally. A time when DJ gear didn't light up like a 15 year old's Christmas tree. Most of the current controllers are ultimately destined for land fill.
@@Mojaxx love your reviews, always on point. One more question. they took out the memory call, does that mean you don't have the memory which used to have active loop?
This is the first of it's model, for that reason there will be many upgrades added to the next model that perhaps should've been added to this model. anyone interested in getting this should probably wait until it's UPGRADED to the FEATURES that were SUPPOSED/ Should've been applied.
Another wicked review Mojaxx. I didn't like the look at this at first but the more I look at it, it's starting to grow on me. I was a little disappointed with the A9 after using a S11 for the last couple of years I was hoping for the smooth echo and a X,Y effects control on the new mixer. I could definitely see myself purchasing the opus-quad as my next bit of kit. The 2 things I also would of liked to have seen on the opus are the pads and effects paddles form the S11.
I'm with you on this one. Ideally, design & colour shouldn't matter, ......but i don't think i could give house space to something as beige as this! I had an Austin Allegro in the 80's in the same colour (yes, I'm that old).
I’m sure this device is a magnet for dust and sensitive for scratches and fingerprints. The look is also not really my thing but the controller looks easy to use and sounds like the high end mixers. And those 2 thing are really the only things that matter. For me it would have been great if it had a 4 band EQ. And the price… yeah, you can’t call it cheap in any way.
Another quality review from the best in the business in my opinion, i must say I don’t like the look of this thing at all, I would be happy if pioneer released a 4 channel stand alone xz with a big screen like on the opus, 3000 jogs and onboard streaming like the denon gear. With those few upgrades on the xz it would be hugely popular. I am an xz owner and I would love an xzmk2!!
LOVE the look. Functionality wise they are still a LOOOONG way behind Denon. I’ve no idea how anyone thinks any of the modern decks or mixers look beautiful in any way, shape or form.
You mean professional? And easier to transport designs? Mhm sure got it ;) this looks like it would break with a single bump. I’d put this controller next to my gold toilet.
Let’s all agree that Pioneer is becoming the new APPLE (in its agressive pricing) also… they shot themselves on the foot with this design… I know someone who will definitely sue them for design plagia… BATMAN
@@aringrey not in its pricing… for the rest I agree… same type of brand with far too many 🐑🐏🐑🐏🐑🐏…but the pricing… they learning a lot from Apple… but not just pioneer… many brands are now following this path… check Logitech as another example…
Thank you for this review! Finally, I found somebody talking about the connectivity to CDJs. I think it's a shame that you can't connect a pair of CDJs via Pro DJ Link...
Features wise is perfect for 99% of Djs. I strongly agree with Mojaxx about the design. The lack of symmetry between the decks is insane for a reputable brand as Pioneer. That's the only thing that is really annoying me too much so, i'm not going th buy it. Edit: I ordered one today 😆😆😆LOL
Pioneer has a new design language, which I now see started with the recent FLX controllers. I think it is a brave move and makes other controllers look cluttered and fussy. Personally, I would prefer it was all black (or black and silver like a premium camera) and I would also prefer that the top surface was horizontal, rather than sloping. Otherwise, though, it looks incredible and has a great feature set and may just tempt me to part with my cash.
For once they try an other design than the basic square to square. i miss the funky design of oldest gear back when pioneer wasn't such close to be a monopole, color full, angle, shape etc... i will not complain because i hope they will continue try the evolve designly speaking.
That's a good point. I hope so. They are supposedly for home use and for situations that don't require a 3000. Maybe there is a 750 Mk II replacement in the wings with similar design language as well.
"Any DJ working in a luxury event will look amazing with it. " Yes. You do formal parties, bring your own stuff, and don't have other DJs jump on it for timeslots. Then it's perfect for you.
Am hoping this is not the successor to the XDJ XZ ,am been waiting for the release of the XDJ ZX2 then I see this release from pioneer 😕😕 pioneer could have simple put some of these features in the xdj xz with a screen like this and give us the XDJ XZ2, this is a big disappointment to me
Súper helpful. I was in love when I saw a still picture on my feed. Been wanting an all in one to not fork out on two more cdjs and still have the classic pioneer effects to compliment my technical and swap out the rotary occasionally. Sadly im put off thanks to the helpful info here. Apart from size. The biggest deal breaker was the fake wood. The beige thing 😢
This is a XDJ AERO on steroids. I still use my Aero and is one of my favorites! I can still connect wireless to Rekordbox and it is a standalone mixer with functioning effects. I wish the color choices were different but I do like the design. The Aero had an odd design as well but dam it is easy to travel with and fun to play on. This Opus Quad is a beast so I can't imagine using it for travel DJing. It's an interesting unit and I am intrigued.
Circled back to this review after Alpha Theta/Pioneer DJ Ominous Duo controller was announced. Glad to hear an honest opinion for once. If they go in this direction. I might have to roll with a Denon Prime 4+ or whatever they bring out in the near future.
I'm with you Mojaxx. Not keen on the asthetics. Much prefer the old-skool look.Awesome features though. Love the look of the xy touchscreen for effects.
They could easily add custom color options to the whole design.. Say when you buy an iPhone you can choose the color I think the same should be for this unit, also an XDJ-XZ2 available for purchase along side it, which would have the same feature set without the... well... interesting look. . . I could see this on things like cruise ships, maybe a home setting or centerpiece, fancy restaurants, hotels, etc. but not a mobile dj or mainstream device.
Good review! I really like your honesty!!! I played 1,5 year with the XZ now I am spinning with cdjs and a mixer.... but really.... you are so right! I don't like the looks at all. I hoped on a XZ with this features! and a bigger screen... the thing I misses the most on this sets is a send and return...

Jog wheel loopers are GREAT......little problem, if you want to loop more than 16 beats (4 bars) dont use Serato and Quad.
I just got one. What a joy! I loved this review because you mentioned what I also felt.... I am lacking the waveform of the 4 decks at the same time... sniffing sniffing. Hopefully this can be upgraded. I am a woman of faith! haha
Hi Carolina, thank you for the review. Are you planning on using yours for events like weddings?
I bought the first one in Sweden. It looks great and works perfectly. I sold my XDJ-XZ and bought the Opus-Quad
Best DJ gear reviewer out there, respect Mojaxx.
If this was a 4-deck XZ-2, it would be unstoppable, regardless of streaming being available. Its a flex of what they are capable of with standalone technology while at the same time missing a load of DJs with the aesthetic. Black knobs, black ribbed sides and it would already be halfway there visually 🤘
black side you can do urself. probably Skin Manufactor are already celebrating! :D
Agreed! All that slanting and sloping makes it look horrible -- especially if put next to CDJs and/or turntables.. We want XDJ-XZ2, please.
My issue is less the colours and more the shaping. That low front end is definitely looking lower than every other piece of DJ kit you're likely to stack next to it, and the front/side angles make it a pain in the arse to put anything near it too.
The low front is 78mm, technics are 85mm they will look perfect together I think.@@mrrayner7162
Denon tech anyone?
Finally Pioneer moving forward. Love the single knob loop function. It's about time.
Mr Mojaxx, you look like you are withering away! good job.
It's not that much of a massive leap forward on the XZ, especially when that's got all the current industry standard functions and layout.
I love your honesty. Thank you for this nice review. Still, I LOVE this design. I instantly fell in love with it. But yes - it's just taste.
I think it looks great and something different. Proper 4 channel setup that appears super easy to use when compared the XZ is brilliant.
I agree with you re the left and right edge shapes and the temp sliders, they may be weird to play with in the dark.
Not having Slip mode seems like something they forgot to add in.
Thank you for your honest opinion Mojaxx. Always spot on 👌
I agree this controller is the new way for standalone unit with addition of WIFI and bluetooth + a much better touch screan and a higher MPU chip Those are essentials now these days.
Great review, very well done! Just subscribed to your channel. Great job, very informative. No regrets buying the XDJ-XZ after watching this.
Interesting perspective on the aesthetics. I’m pretty fussy myself, and I think this thing looks beautiful! I also have yet to see one in person. Will soon find out though!
Indeed beautiful, until you start touching it transferring horrible marks to its surfaces.
I have said it once but going forward you are always so good at your reviews and honesty you are so good at what you do and of coarse the brim is spot on cheers mate!!
I wish it was an XZ2. You nailed it there Mojaxx.
I’d love to see that joystick encoder on future Pioneer gear as well!
If this is successful in sales, it will heavily influence future pioneer product designs as well. Even tho the A9 just came out and CDJ-3000 barely 2 years old, I suspect the sequels to these products will borrow some of the styling and features from this
The loop encoder and WiFi were both available on pioneers xdj-aero, it's first standalone all in one unit.
How do you choose your songs when you're DJing? Preview every single one?
In essence, yes, though I do a lot of prep in terms of how I name my files, so that assuming I know my own material, I'll have an easier time locating what I need in the moment.@@AiMaTay
I'm a Dennon guy, but I REALLY like this. The 3 screens and color scheme look premium to me. Yeah, it's got significant shortcomings, but it dazzles me. Blinded by the lights. It's given me pause in assembling my ultimate setup.
Quad+ Serato+Neo G9 Ultimate home setup
$3200 and not even a magvel crossfader pro? wtf
I agree this thing looks weird but works fantastic.
not if you use Serato
Im getting some interesting classic Vestax vibes here … I remember going through their catalogs as a teen … they were so forward thinking … imagining a CEO’s office when decks sitting unobtrusive in the background … that’s what’s im getting from this one.
Totally. A time when DJ gear didn't light up like a 15 year old's Christmas tree. Most of the current controllers are ultimately destined for land fill.
Curious if the name suggests there will be a DUO coming out soon. I’d love a smaller form factor unit with these features.
Denon prime go, sc live 2, prime 2
Loving this review Mojaxx thank you!
Great Review! For the Hot Cues, does it work in smart cues only? can you choose it to work as trigger or gate or toggle?
You can turn off smart cue and then it behaves like CDJs - trigger mode.
@@Mojaxx love your reviews, always on point. One more question. they took out the memory call, does that mean you don't have the memory which used to have active loop?
I didn’t know about that hot cue/temp cue thing. Absolutely love it.
Great review, but I personally think the look of the unit is great.
i 100 percent agreed with you !! awesome review like always!!
Cheers. Smashing it with the recent reviews
What a review man. You got talent keep at it 💪💪💪
I'm with you on this one. Ideally, design & colour shouldn't matter, ......but i don't think i could give house space to something as beige as this!
I had an Austin Allegro in the 80's in the same colour (yes, I'm that old).
Mojaxx, best reviews out there Sir 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
put this in my ddj sz and i would be all in
im with you Mojaxx, the look aint my thing, prefer the industrial square look too. But the features seem great!
Phenomenal review, thanks mate! 🙌
Great review always. Love the look apart from the colours.
Great review 👍🏾👍🏾. Thank you for "Your honesty''.
Thank you for another amazing and very helpful review ❤ your a true DJ legend
LOVE the look. Functionality wise they are still a LOOOONG way behind Denon.
I’ve no idea how anyone thinks any of the modern decks or mixers look beautiful in any way, shape or form.
This is dope, about time someone changed the basic box design. Buying
shill, the prime 4 is wayy better than this pos
You mean professional? And easier to transport designs? Mhm sure got it ;) this looks like it would break with a single bump. I’d put this controller next to my gold toilet.
Great review @mojaxx. Some useful new features on the unit but tbh I do not like the design.
This was a very intelligent review.
Great review, thank you!!! We have one on order, and I actually can't wait to get my hands on it!
Let’s all agree that Pioneer is becoming the new APPLE (in its agressive pricing) also… they shot themselves on the foot with this design… I know someone who will definitely sue them for design plagia… BATMAN
it has always been the apple of DJing.
It’s a Fantastic looking piece of kit. It would be nice to have wrapping options to change the look.
It's easy to tolerate the design once you see the features.
They should make a chrome & black version - without the wings.
Another great review. Thanks Mojaxx!! I didn't hear any mention of DVS. Does this unit support DVS like the XZ?
For once they try an other design than the basic square to square. i miss the funky design of oldest gear back when pioneer wasn't such close to be a monopole, color full, angle, shape etc... i will not complain because i hope they will continue try the evolve designly speaking.
Do you think that Opus Quad ( taking into account the new technology available) will pave the way for XDJ 1000 mk3 successor?
That's a good point. I hope so. They are supposedly for home use and for situations that don't require a 3000. Maybe there is a 750 Mk II replacement in the wings with similar design language as well.
This product is beautiful for me. Any DJ working in a luxury event will look amazing with it. Maybe this is a controller for non-pioneer users.
"Any DJ working in a luxury event will look amazing with it. "
Yes. You do formal parties, bring your own stuff, and don't have other DJs jump on it for timeslots. Then it's perfect for you.
Am hoping this is not the successor to the XDJ XZ ,am been waiting for the release of the XDJ ZX2 then I see this release from pioneer 😕😕 pioneer could have simple put some of these features in the xdj xz with a screen like this and give us the XDJ XZ2, this is a big disappointment to me
From an aesthetics point of view, this thing will do for DJ controllers/players what gaming laptops did for laptops.
Thank GOD!!!! Loop encoders are the best!! 17:02
I love this thing the 3/4 inputs, I still use traktor and I love playing stems and adding some live drum machines... dope product!!!
Nice review Mojaxx!
Thanks for your review. If it had the looks of CDJ/DJM's i would buy for sure... now i'll wait for better times..!
I hoped on a XZ with this features! and a bigger screen... the thing I misses the most on this sets is a send and return...
very good review as always brother, i agree with the aesthetics, looks weird tbh ... still personally contemplating between an 1210 setup, a CDJ 3000 setup or an all in one setup fr my home studio !
The price is eye watering, but I love the design. I wouldn't mind owning one.
