Dale, congratulations! You were the only one among many who taught the relationship between the sizing card and the mesh size. In addition, you showed the manufacturing closely, which allowed to see properly. The colors of the rope and the sizing card are not a problem at all to see the weaving, contrary to what some have said. Good job!
Not true. I think the net is grate i have spent a long time looking for this. But i find myself having to undo and redo things. Becouse his hand was in the way if the string so i could not see and it took several like 8 rewatching and redoing before i realized he had made a 2nd loop around the card some key words or a colored sting would have made it easier There is no down sides to a hugh contrast string and proper camera exposure and having an unobstructed view of the string. Im not upset at the creator i hope you more more vids on this but the truth is that it is hard to see. What you are doing especially at the tricky start. I will give a like honestly im going to try and find another vid of the the same net style. This was to frustrating. Sorry guy.
This is the way my Dad showed me to tie a net. I haven't done it since I was a kid and I'm in my 60s and disabled. This looks like something constructive with which to pass my time. I didn't learn the pattern to make a cast net. It is something I can make for the kids to use. I'll then show them how to make one which they, in turn, can gift to their friends. You are, by-the-way, a very good instructor.

My great grandmother used to work at the fishing port in my village making and repairing nets and this is the way they made their wider nets here in Catalonia too. However the finer ones were made differently.

I am a knitter and I find if you have thick knitting needles you can make a net. Also with peg knitting you can get some thick logs in the ground and e wrap the logs twice then with a hook pull the loops over the logs. Your have to watch loop knitting on how to cast off. I am learning to loop knit my first blanket and will be learning to cast off when I am done. Knitting when stretched out looks like a knife and it seems knitting a net or making a peg knitting loom would be easier then making all those nots

the way you knot it is different then most that ive seen..usually they throw it over their hand go behind the loop then through the loop abd tighten it down.....wondering if it really matters. does one hold up longer then the other?

You may find that if you are using synthetic string that you may need to use a double sheet bend. Instead of pulling the string tight after going around the loop, pass the netting needle through the loop and then tighten off. That should make your synthetic cordage's knots more sturdy.

this is the only video i can find that shows how to make a square net. not square mesh, i mean the whole net being a square with parallel meshes like a tennis court net etc. I wanted some netting like this to accent a wood working project but all i could find was instructions on diagonal hanging diamond mesh. Hi Dale, Thank you for the instructive video. Your teaching is clear and precice. I made a netting needle and a sizing board with scrap wood and followed your instructioins and made a 4 foot sqaure net. I want to make a net which is 2 or 3 times as long as it is wide. What do I need to do differently? I checked out your web site. Sorry I can't come to take a course with you.

Dale, Great Video! How would I construct a net to replace the net used inside my landing net? It needs to have loops to attach it to the metal ring the net hangs from, plus it has to have enough size to hang down in the center like a landing net should. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks again for all your GREAT work! Ed

@ Charlissa do a youtube search for Johnnyrambo showing how to tie a net. Dave Cantebury also has a video showing how to tie a net without a needle. So does Ray mears. All 3 of those guys use the same procedure.
You need a smaller netting needle. And an area clear of debris to work.

Yes, it should work with rope. Also look up hand knitting, which is simpler and requires no tools.
I haven't tried to follow these instructions yet myself, so maybe this is a non-issue, but as I am watching it, I am finding it very difficult to keep track of how much of which strand of cord is on the sizing card at any given moment because both the cord and the card are white. If you were to record this again (no small effort!) it would be great if the cord were white and the card black or vice versa! Just a thought. Thanks!
a small sharp knife and a piece of wood and you can whittle one, look up some whittling guides.

Interesting movie, BUT you need to take in consideration the light better. When starting to add the thread to your needle, you can hardly see how due to sun reflecting in the needle-wood.
Our techniques are quite a bit different, I tie a sheetbend with a simple method called the flying dutchman and show you how to make a needle from wire. You may want to take a look. All the best. -Gene

He’s just showing a process. Why is everyone so negative, examples are never the real thing. If you knew a little about other crafts i can see the actual motion of the needle is a blanket stitch, which you do to lock stitches around the edge of the material but in this case to the previous square. The netting needle holds the line to push it through, granted there could be different methods. But there seems to be more along th4ese lines. I originally was wondering about the tool as a post I’m on someone is inquiring. I dislike negativity. Go make your own video then?

Hi there , i need your advice for the best possible twine to use when making a net that will last me a very long time , i plan to make my self a keeper net = its what you place fish in while your fishing with the intent to release back into the water at the end of the day , also i will be making a very large landing net , it will also be used to scoop up anything up to a 25 kilo fish , there is so called twine made in India and China , some of the stuff is called polypropylene , some polyethylene and some simply nylon , i will not be looking at monofilament because it is basically fishing line and i know it has a small lifespan , any advice will be at the very least a start because i know nothing about netting materials etc , thank you for your time and your answer

Yes, i think its something you have to try while you are watching the video and pause it after each step, and I imagine it gets easier once you get used to doing the loops. Looking forward to giving it a go myself :)

But I use clothesline wire but when I got the chords vertically and horizontally on top of each other I would actually sewn them together. It took a lot of loving patience to do this

Remember it? It's on video, you can watch it repeatedly. It's actually easy to do. Learned to do it in elementary, in Hawaii. You practice at home until you have it down. It's that easy.

Just keep practicing. This is something you could work on at night if you have other camp chores. If in a group teach it to the older or injured folks so they can contribute and feel useful. I suggest one inch squares to catch lots of smaller fish and maybe another of 1.5 to 1.75 to gill net the medium fish. Practice some everyday until you know the procedures. Soon you will be flying along. If you are making a gill net you need to attach weights on the bottom, rocks etc to hold it down and floats along the top. Just a suggestion.
