Add a couple drops clove oil as a preservative. This is what’s used in archival bookbinding. If too thin, start over and reduce water. Lasts a week or so and is dirt cheap.
Hi Shannon. I tried this process using matte medium and mod podge (matte) on parchment paper, dried with my heat tool and had them off in less than 5 min. Worked like a charm! Ellen Coffin There are lots of different ways to make a decal, in fact I have a video on some gel medium decals I made a while back. None of them give you the same transparency as YES! Paste. Close...but not quite!

Shannon, I've made over a dozen napkin skins since watching your video. I had to go out and buy some napkins (went to Tuesday Morning for the very first time) before I could start. I think I missed it when you said to use a very thin layer of the YES glue. First time I used way to much and the napkin felt like elephant skin - very thick. I've been using a lot less and they're great! Thanks!

When storing these decals, do they need to be sandwiched between papers, so they don't adhere themselves together into one gelatinous lump? I would think in a humid climate that might be worse than in a dry climate, but even a journal page that has a gloss medium on it will eventually glue itself together, unless waxed...with our ever popular Daddy Van's all natural furniture polish *ding*. (Insert sparkle on the tooth) let me know what you figure out for storing these little gems, because you have discovered a pretty awesome technique there :)
Letha Richardson thismuseofmine Yes they do need to be stored with waxed paper or deli wrap or something similar between them if you're going to stack them. Mine will go into sheet protectors and laid out so that they're not touching each other so they should be ok .
Hi Shannon - playing catch up since I subscribed - My Yes paste arrived (in the UK) after ordering yesterday! I had a "bad glue day" yesterday, and nothing worked in my composition book - glue stick, PVA and others....Yes is perfect as it's so thick - Followed on with the transfer thing, so now trying that. I have waxed discs for both making burgers and putting on the top of home made jam - I'm thinking, especially with the smaller jam discs, that I could make some "circle spots" this way - they are a perfect size too! I accidentally found that glossy acrylic medium by golden works great on parchment paper to do the same thing. It works on both napkins and tissue paper. I spent a ton of time working on a project and then the stuff just peeled up when it was dry.
Hey Shannon, great follow up! The Nori paste napkin would be good for your original quest of finding focal images since it's not so transparent, as would the foil backed napkin.
Wonder how, if you can find it and if it's still made, how kids' school paste would work. You know, the kind that came with the little spatula to spread it. Our Michaels does have yes paste.
Nancy Wiltshire Elmer's still makes paste. It's methyl cellulose which is the main ingredient in wallpaper paste so it would probably be similar to that. I would imagine it would make a good adhesive but I doubt it would provide the same transparency.
I liked this technique - have about half a jar of YES! Paste that has survived moving and storage. Have a whole gallon Ziploc of napkins. I intend to try it backed on the foil and then using the foiled one in an embossing folder. Should hold the texture nicely. This part of TX doesn't have an HEB to get nice freezer paper - boo on Amarillo

Hello my Texas friend...so I went looking for Yes paste today and I thought you would like to know that Michaels and the Hobby Lobby do not carry it, at least in WI. I was so sad cause I'm on vaca and wanted to try the napkin technique. But fear not cause I found some bleeding tissue paper so I'll do that instead. As for the paste I did find it on Amazon. Napkins will be next weeks project.

Well ... it's not the deli paper. I watched your friend test with local deli paper and it worked fine. I tried again - no luck. Today, I am experimenting again -- with very little paste (maybe I'm using too much) ... we shall see. the napkins which were stuck solid to the deli paper made beautiful pockets and tuck spots for my journal.

Why not leave them.on the background paper til you use them then peel off, im wondering at this point in time, did you have trouble getting the napkins apart from page protectors later or from laying them in a pike together?

Phoebe Gloss medium works fairly well....white glue, not so much! But do your own experiments cuz these things vary with different brands and even different climates.

If you glue the napkin down with soft gel medium on to a piece of glass like you are making an acrylic transfer you should be able to lift them when they are dry. they should still be transparent.
Ros Jones Acrylic mediums, Mod Podge, PVA etc. can all be used to make a decal. But none of them will give you the same transparency you get with YES! Paste. They all leave a white haze on the napkin.
i am going to turn green with envy at your collection of beautiful napkins...T_T I just wanted to say if people can't find YES paste (like me) or Nori paste - the way Nori paste is made is just by smoooshing steamed rice onto a surface with a spatula...so I guess that could be an option lmao...

Shannon Green oh fudge, and I just read you can not stack them....I was hoping that I could. As you know Mod Podge will not stack as they stick to each other in warm weather. DARN! lol
Daddy Van's beeswax furniture polish will fix that Mod Podge sticking problem on finished journal pages! But I wouldn't recommend using it on pieces that you will glue down later.

I think nonstick mats would work great. You can do this with other glues but the results aren’t quite the same...not as transparent.

Love this.....I have a huge roll of freezer paper that I used for sewing patterns cuz it irons on cloth.

For Texans the HEB freezer paper is amazing thick stuff. It is under $5 for a gigantic roll that is also wide. Red box usually on the bottom shelf.

You can use it but the results aren't quite the same. The napkins don't get as transparent as they do with Yes Paste...for some reason. :)

I store them in sheet protectors. Most of mine are covered with Daddy Van's (wax) so they won't stick but you can separate them with waxed paper too.

Both! The parchment I buy is pretty much the same on both sides...not like waxed paper.
I read somewhere that wallpaper paste could be a substitute for "Yes" paste, no maybe it was the frugal crafter that said that

If you glue the napkin down with soft gel medium on to a piece of glass like you are making an acrylic transfer you should be able to lift them when they are dry. they should still be transparent.
Ros Jones Acrylic mediums, Mod Podge, PVA etc. can all be used to make a decal. But none of them will give you the same transparency you get with YES! Paste. They all leave a white haze on the napkin.
Oh I see, we don't have YES paste here.

I just wanted to say if people can't find YES paste (like me) or Nori paste - the way Nori paste is made is just by smoooshing steamed rice onto a surface with a spatula...so I guess that could be an option lmao...

Shannon Green oh fudge, and I just read you can not stack them....I was hoping that I could. As you know Mod Podge will not stack as they stick to each other in warm weather. DARN! lol
Daddy Van's beeswax furniture polish will fix that Mod Podge sticking problem on finished journal pages! But I wouldn't recommend using it on pieces that you will glue down later.
