    I'm a commercial multi engine instrument rated pilot and haven't flown for over 10 years because of service connected injuries I sustained while serving in Iraq. I've have 6 back surgeries and and taking narcotics for pain. Recently I have flown with an attorney friend of mine doing approaches into KRFD and just like this video clouds came in and just like that instant IMC. I have over 600hrs of actual logged IMC time but over 10 prior. When we hit the clouds I actually started to hyperventilate because I looked out the wind screen and then out the door window. With over 4200hrs total time or 27 years of flying I have never been scared like I did that day!! This is a good video, wow brings back of what could have happened if you didn't have an IFR rating.     My instructor was a savvy older pilot who'd flown and instructed in military service (bombers) and was very particular about learning safety and emergency procedures. He also advocated all students to continue training to get the IFR rating even is they did not intend to be an IFR pilot for just this sort of reason, and spent more time teaching the essential IFR skill to his students before allowing cross country flights solo.
    His care saved my life one day on cross when I flew into an unexpected and unforecast dark thick something and made the 180 to get out almost instantly with full attention on the instruments. I was too inexperienced to be sure what it was but as I got some distance I had a quick look and it seemed to spread out lower down and cover a significant portion of the valley floor ahead (now beside and behind) me...I canceled the cross and went back home wondering how I had missed seeing it earlier. The experience made me a more careful and aware pilot.
    To answer your question, had I been flying in your situation's conditions with a wait time ahead of me, as a VFR pilot with a little IFR experience, I would have declared an emergency, gotten my inexperienced butt on the ground and out of the way fast, and taken the heat from the FAA. Better alive and not putting anyone else in danger than the alternative. :)

    Crazy - can you imagine how scary that would have been if you didn't have the IR instructor on board allowing you to switch and file IFR to land via the ILS?
    I wonder how it turned out for the poor VFR guy behind you, asking for special and being told it would be a 20 minute delay.
    How low was that vis on short final? looked like 1.5 miles or less - must have been a relief to see those runway lights show up through the snow!

      It would have been VERY scary and I would had probably diverted VFR somewhere to the northwest or west or maybe Chicago Executive which was still VFR and wait it out.
      It all turned out ok for everyone that day after all. The vis was about 1.5 at the time when I landed and actually got worst a bit after. And yes it was definitely a relief to land safely.

    What an excellent video! I cant Believe how fast the weather deteriorated, and then to top it off, due to other traffic, atc wouldn't let you go back immediately, and while doing 360s the visibility got even worse! you handled it very nicely.
    And the landing was just about the smoothest i have ever seen! I kept waiting and waiting for a little bump on touchdown, but the plane started slowing to taxi speed, and i was like, wow, he is already on the ground!

    4:46 - pretty scary, 6:46 - the happiest sight on Earth. I’ve watched a number of VFR into IMC videos the last few weeks but this is the best I’ve see yet in terms of showing what the pilot experiences and why it’s so disorienting. Thanks for posting.

      Haha amazing to receive a reply all this time later...thanks for your message...I completed the rating as scheduled and went on to work as a commercial pilot (first air ambulance and currently a regional airline). I’ve flown turbo props and jets already. In my short career I can even say I’ve already experienced a down turn in aviation as we currently go through the covid19 pandemic, but this too shall pass and better times will come again. Aviation has been very good to me and in return I am committed to spend the next few decades of my career returning the favour.

    Excellent. Not just the landing as mentioned many times already, but also the "calm, cool, attitude of the crew on board. The one thing I would mention though is that neither of you offered the other a cup of coffee to enjoy that calm, relaxing flight with. :)
    Well done. Personally, ida crapped. No IFR other than what is required for PPL at this point. A little for my biennial and that's it. I've been aching to get in and get it done. this helped reinforce the importance. Thanks!

    Nice call on choosing to get an IFR clearance from the air as soon as you see the weather deteriorating. I like this guys conservative flying style. He doesn't wait to call on the resources to make the flight safer. This same situation has happened to me on several flights. The weather forecasting is not to be relied on, especially when it is marginal IFR from the get-go.

      Lol sorry to all about that, I didn't catch that during final edit. The autopilot was set to 200 feet AGL and it was warning me that I was more than 200' below the setting. Annoying especially during the final seconds.

    I am your basic sport pilot before there was such a thing (daytime VFR only), but my brother is a 9000 hour pilot with every rating except CFI, ATP and pure jet. I've flown hard IFR with him and was always happy to be right seat.

    This...this right here is why I recommend every PPL get an IR rating. Forecasts can change rapidly and you never know when you'll get stuck with an IFR only airport

      I disagree. Most of the airplanes I fly don't have instruments that would be helpful in IMC. The key to avoiding "sudden" IFR conditions is to have safe personal minimums beyond the VFR minimums, and being aware of the weather. This was a crappy day to fly, even if it was technically VFR to begin with.

      Brian, sometimes you must fly even in crappy days. For many people flying is not about getting a $100 burger at the town next door but it is about commuting to work or seeing clients. I cancelled one too many meetings because the weather was IFR and I was not rated back then. IFR helps you get where you need to go safely as long as you are properly trained, current and use the right equipment.

      Atc needed to maintain separation that is why the recommended 360's. I've had several occasions like this and ATC was always very helpful. It is very unprofessional to call ATC names when they were helping him out. Some day ATC may save your tail......

      Nique Haupt exactly. I’m sure Niko wasn’t the only one that had that issue pop up. Without having full picture, I can only imagine that there was, perhaps, an influx or pop up ifr clearances based on quickly the weather turned. One may not agree with atc’s 360 turn, and as PIC, you have the right to decline and come up with another safe alternative procedure. Name calling ATC for trying to help, is beyond unprofessional and stupid, at best. Great work Niko.

      There is no room for panic. My scary moment is that Chicago Approach wanted us to stay VFR at or below 2,500 until they gave us our clearance about 10 minutes later which seemed like hours. We were flying at 1,800 MSL which was the minimum safe altitude for the area and it was barely VFR. That was scary!

      Hey Chris, I love flying under IFR rules even on severe VFR days sometimes so that I get amazing flight following service from ATC. For me it feels like less work than having to worry about traffic and airspace. They route you through and around everything. I also think IFR makes you a better pilot with the a deeper understanding of the flight environment. Go for it buddy!

    I agree, an Instrument rating if very useful, although outside of my training I've only ever needed to fly IFR once. The important thing to have is not only the rating, but also an aircraft with the required instruments on-board. Having an instrument rating if useless is you end up in an aircraft without a working ADF or a DME.

      Neither an ADF nor DME are required for IFR flight.

      +fiveoboy01 This may be the case, but I certainly wouldn't want to try. You can get away without an ADF, as NDB's are seldom used for en-route navigation, but I wouldn't want to get in an aircraft for an IFR flight without an OBI/RMI/HSI and a DME. This all assumes a basic nav setup, which in the UK most light aircraft have, so I'm assuming no GPS.

      +GoPro Flying sure, if there's no GPS, then sure a DME is basically a must. I have a WAAS GPS and have no intention of getting rid of my DME. All I'm saying is that it's not required for IFR.

    I learned to fly at KUGN way back in the early-70s at the Navy Flying Club (are they still there?). No tower in those days, unicom only. Is Trans-Air still on the field?

      I fly out of KUGN and it's mostly Skill Aviation flight training and Stick and Rudder flight club. The FBO there does a steady private jet business and it definitely gets busy on the weekends.

    Been there and it sucks. It’s not a matter of if but a matter of when you’ll go inadvertent IMC. You fly enough your going to encounter this. Also nice to have an ipad with fore flight to add to situational awareness.

    Sometimes I feel just like the closed captioning here. It pops up all sorts of wording where it doesn’t understand what ATC is saying and I don’t either. They either mumble or speak too fast for me or both.
    I’m not a pilot yet and I’ve just been training here on TH-cam. It would seem to me that from what I’ve learned so far, the tower having radar would direct you on a vector guiding you in until you see those lights. What do you do with no radar and/or no lights? Screwed?

      TH-cam is not a good learning tool especially when it comes to the intricacies and life or death situations flying will put you in.
      Having said that, the way it works is you fly a published procedure which is called an approach and that is designed to get you down below he clouds where you can land safely. For these procedures to be available to you everything must work including radio signals and lights or they are not available to use. The fact that we were ok to use the procedures means that the likelihood of landing safely was guaranteed unless the pilot is not instrument rated and current.
      I was in the final stages of instrument training and I had a very capable instructor on board.
      Go get real flying lessons please and put what you have learned on TH-cam to the test. You will be surprised by the complexities of it and the challenges every flight presents.

    I will definately say even with all the stress you must have felt that landing was picture perfect, I didnt even notice a bump or jostle on touchdown, good job.

      nikolaki70 Got my instrument rating after about 450 hours (SEL). Hardest (and most expensive) damn thing I ever did in my life. Unfortunately, it made me over-confident to the point of nearly killing myself and my passengers on two separate occasions (weather #1, fuel #2). IFR should be for professional pilots only.

      nikolaki70 Getting the IFR ticket was more a matter of pride and accomplishment for me. I never intended to go out in bad weather, but I was glad to have had the training the one time I got caught with my 'pants down'. I still maintain that this rating should only be sought by those who intend to be professional pilots and not those weekend pilots like my former self who might be tempted to take off in other than VFR conditions.

    So what about people who fly light sport who can’t get an IFR rating, should they do the appropriate training for IFR and (legally) use it only in emergencies?

      I’m not an expert in that, but logically any IFR training is extremely valuable to be able to get the pilot out of inadvertent IMC conditions

    This is why I refuse to get in a plane with a VFR only pilot, regardless of weather conditions and forecasts. In my state there are many VFR into IMC situations most resulting in fatalities. For 18 years i investigate every single crash and 85% are due to this one pilot error

    interesting to see how fast the weather deteriorated...please explain what would have most likely happened to a fairly new and VFR rated pilot... in those exact conditions ...thanks

      Hi Gary, I'm afraid that without my instructor on board and my instrument training to that point I would most likely wouldn't be here right now.
      One of two things would have happened. You or I would have flown too low and scud run under the weather which would be extremely dangerous and would try to move somewhere North or West away from the weather and hopefully would have made it alive.
      The other scenario would have been losing control and situational awareness and end up as another statistic.
      My one advice, get your instrument rating. Best thing you can do for yourself as a pilot.

      CONGRATULATIONS! What an accomplishment. Probably the most valuable rating you will ever earn. Good for you, now use that skill my friend even in perfect VFR. Get in that system and work it out. I do that all the time and it's great practice even if severe VFR out.

      It was the altitude annunciator from the autopilot that kept beeping because we were 200' below where it was set (I had set it at the DA) so yes you heard me cursing there. I'm sorry about that, I missed it on final edit...

      Oh man, don't be sorry, there's so many bells and whistles in planes today that are completely unnecessary on a daily basis. It's hard not to yell at them sometimes. The "We realize you're landing, but here's a loud beeping because your throttle is at less than 10%" is my personal enemy.

      We sure did but it turned out to be too cold for it to stick. This thing came out of nowhere and many folks with non-IFR airplanes got stuck and had to divert elsewhere.

      +Niko's Wings It's surprising only one person mentioned about icing. As a CFII I am not really concerned about IMC if this happens to me, but icing is a huge concern. If the temp is between 2 and -40C or so, I always assume I could get icing and never enter clouds. You never know how much liquid water content exists until you actually get in or someone makes PIREP. I wouldn't return to the home airport as you might get icing. Instead I would just divert and wait till the weather improves. Of course it all depends on situations though. Anyway thanks for sharing the great video!
