This video was uploaded 3 years. I was able to fix my car trunk using the information provided in this video. I can't thank you enough for this. Love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
I had the exact same problem, and your solution worked beautifully. I didn't have any washers that were thick enough, so I just wrapped some #10 copper wire around the screws instead!
I was so worried I was gonna have to try to go find a brand new latching mechanism for my 2005 Corolla and tear the trunk apart to install it, and turns out I just had to grab a couple of scrap washers I happened to scavenge from an old job and slap them in in under 5 minutes. Dude you just saved my hide, thank you for this
Thank you!!!! We packed up our car when we were moving and the car hauler was on his way….perfect timing, our trunk wouldn’t latch. After finding your video, we did what you suggested and viola 💁🏻♀️ problem solved!!
This pretty much worked for me. Have to give mine a little push from below the tag area too. Twenty years of service from my 2004 Corolla. Can't complain.
Thanks for the quick fix. 5 star review from me. I only had two washers at the time of trying to fix it. It locks up just as when I bought it in 06 Corolla. A little battered up hatch. Also check out the tensioner release for the drive belt.
Worked great on our 2009 Corolla. So grateful!!! We bought a new actuator online thinking that was the problem and it still didn't work - added a washer on each side and works great now!!
Same issue with my daughter's Camry. Changed the latch on trunk lid, and it did no good. Figured it was out of alignment, but wasn't sure how to fix it. Will try this when she gets home.
I'm not sure if this will fix our old 2007 Toyota YARIS but the locking mechanism is the same as the Australian model and I was scratching my head last night trying to fix this and realized that the latch was not making contact with the striker because the latch was working fine when manually testing it with the opening mechanisms and manually locking the latch. It appeared to be one of those subtle problems we tend to find when cars get older and the component isn't faulty it's just the dimensions from wear and tear over time move the mechanism out of tolerance. Great video.
Thanks for the video, it worked for me. Replaced my old trunk latch with a brand new one but it needs a huge push to close it, added two 1/4 washers in between which brought it back to the normal stage.
Very helpful, too long intro, two ads, my brother figured it out before you mentioned the latch problem 😳👍 edit: 10/10, helpful video, would recommend, shared with my family, would recommend to people who don't have a brother like mine 💪❤️⚽🚗
Good diagnosis and good solution. I had the same problem on my daughter’s 2006 Corolla also same color. I used two washers on each side but one was thin and got inconsistent results so i replaced the thin ones and used two normal thickness one on each side and the latch closed consistently. Thanks for your help.
I have the opposite issue, mine wont open. The trunk lock cylinder is toast and the release latch by the drivers seat wont release the trunk. Any ideas on how I might get my trunk open?
I just had this issue. My trunk was stuck in “valet mode” which disables the inside trunk latch (lock turned horizontally). I applied olive oil directly to my key as I didn’t have WD 40 like the video I watched suggested, wiggled it a few times and it moved to the correct position so I can open my trunk from the inside now. The video I watched said to spray inside the keyhole with WD 40 and work the lock until it opens. Apply more as needed.
The problem is I did that already and it wasn't Aligned properly so the washer spaced it out to align the trunk lid that has moved Due to being slammed so many times over the years.
this didnt work for me but i still put washers on it but what worked was when i used a hammer and banged the bottom latch clip connected to the bumper over to the left some and that fixed it i got into the trunk and seen where it was hitting and need to bang it over alittle
Yeah this fix may not work for everybody depending on how their trunk aligns and where the latch hits. But getting in the trunk and seen how it latches will give you an idea what you may need to do.
It’s a common fact that Americans for some reason love to slam trunks and car doors. Almost every other country closes the doors gently, probably because it’s not as easy for us to buy cars like it is in America. Me and my wife were completely blown away by the amount of people who slam their doors when we were there.
@@JCustomFab thank you for reply. So I did put 2 washers and it still kept opening. However, I swapped out the trunk latch actuator, and now it works prefect. Seems to be a problem with my model.

Fixed my wife's car with this. Big thanks to you!!
I'm really glad this video is helpful... Thank you for watching and thanks for the comment.
This came quite handy. Had to improvise with a copper wire in place of a proper 'washer'. In less than two minutes, the trunk shut. Thank you.🙏
Thanks for the video! My trunk was driving me nuts and this fixed it in 2 minutes! To think it was this simple

I am really glad that helped you. I can't believe how many people this video has helped thank you for the comments.
Thanks so much for your video, cause in the middle of a rainy night the washers were the solution. All the way from Belize.
Just added 1 washer each. It really worked. Thanks

Same issue with my daughter's Camry. Changed the latch on trunk lid, and it did no good. Figured it was out of alignment, but wasn't sure how to fix it.

I am going to have to give this a try.
Edit: gave it a try and it works great
On most situations it works... Just depends what direction your latch is latching so try it out and let me know how it goes.
Hello, I just fixed my car following your video 😃. Thank you very much.
'This'...literally just happened to my old TC ~ Also water has leaked into the trunk. What a filthy mess🤦 Thank You!
This was a huge help thank you!
I'm glad it helped
Thanks for the video, it worked for me. Replaced my old trunk latch with a brand new one but it needs a huge push to close it, added two 1/4 washers in between which brought it back to the normal stage.
This worked for my 2013 Lexus ES350 trunk too. Thanks for the vid!

I'm really glad it worked for you thank you for leaving the comment
Nice job my friend
Thank you! Cheers!
Those this rear Headrest match compatible with a Toyota Camry 2009 car?
Fixed it. Thanks for the post
Did u put the washers before and after the bolt when you reassembled?
The washers are between the trunk latch and the trunk... not the head of the bolt. Thanks for watching.
Nice bro. Thanks a lot
Where do you purchase the washers from
You could get him from your local hardware store like home depot
I have the opposite issue, mine wont open. The trunk lock cylinder is toast and the release latch by the drivers seat wont release the trunk. Any ideas on how I might get my trunk open?
Crawl into the trunk from the back seat and pull the emergency release
I just had this issue. My trunk was stuck in “valet mode” which disables the inside trunk latch (lock turned horizontally).

Thank you for this video👍
Thanks.... my Mitsubishi SUV wont latch suddenly... I will take a look using the same trouble shooting method. They can't be too different
A lot of them are so similar
Worked. Thanks!
My 2016 wasn't lining up so I folded the back seats down and pulled the trunk into alignment so that it would seal and close with the chassey.
Hi can you please tell me the measure the washers
@@lisbethhernandez62 They are 1/4 fender washers
Hi, will this work for a 94 Camry XLE has same problem, what size washers?
Thank you so much brody !
Will this work on a 2012 Corolla
Why not just raise the striker plate height on the body?
The problem is I did that already and it wasn't Aligned properly so the washer spaced it out to align the trunk lid that has moved Due to being slammed so many times over the years.
Mans a legend
Thanks I appreciate it and appreciate you watching.
I put a couple washers, it still doesn’t work any other suggestions?
I fixed..but it opens at speed breaker...or any rough surface on high way. Any advise
What size washer are you using
Just use A standard. 3/8 washer.
What size washers? I have the same problem
I just used four 3/8 washers...
this didnt work for me but i still put washers on it but what worked was when i used a hammer and banged the bottom latch clip connected to the bumper over to the left some and that fixed it i got into the trunk and seen where it was hitting and need to bang it over alittle

Just about to try this on my car now.
Let me know how it goes.
🎉🎉cheers n thank you
Thank you too
That trunk sounded like the same noise a coke can makes when you crush it😂
Great Tip but I was going "OUCH" each time you slammed that trunk. I have a 93 corolla and I close the trunk so gently.

Ordered a new latch, ain’t locking closed. Then Put washers, still not working 😑
You need to verify the alignment and if the latch is Not bent.
Good video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
Any info on whether this will work on a 2010 Camry?
@@JCustomFab thank you for reply. So I did put 2 washers and it still kept opening. However, I swapped out the trunk latch actuator, and now it works prefect. Seems to be a problem with my model.
@@JCustomFab thank you.
Mother fuuuuuu. Well you get a like for making me feel like a moron. Well done.
Worked for a 2015 Toyota Corolla
Awesome I'm glad thanks for letting me know.
What size washers? Can they be split ? Or it doesn’t matter??
I don't think it matters too much as long as there not too big
@@JCustomFab thnx bro it’s fix
Thank you that help alot
What size washer pls
Thx it worked for me
What size washers ?
