  • Throughout the centuries, the Tower of London has become known for being a site of torture and execution. It was where two of Henry VIII's wives lost their heads during the Tudor period, and where Guy Fawkes was racked. But one forgotten tale of the Tower of London is what happened to John Bawd, a guard who worked there. He fell in love with a prisoner known as Alice Tankerville, who would be accused of stealing money from Henry VIII. But Bawd and Tankerville fell in love.
    They tried an audacious escape attempt, and they did succeed but when captured shortly after John Bawd the guard who was meant to keep prisoners locked up was tortured horrifically. He was racked and forced into Little Ease, the Tower's oubliette style dungeon. But he was then executed as he was hanged in chains from the Tower's walls.

    The English have come up with some wonderfully silly official titles throughout their history but I think "Beefeater" wins the prize for the silliest 😂

      Beefeater is not an official title, it is a nickname, the official title is 'The Yeomen Warders of His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign's Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary'.

      The belief about beefeaters and their nickname ‘The Beefeaters’ is because they were allegedly paid in beef during the reign of Henry VIII. This was explained to us during a tour of the Tower.

      One theory is that they served at the king's buffet and were called by the French title buffetiers which to the English
      commoners sounded like beefeaters.

    I took history gcse to learn this stuff, we learnt the enclosure system and the clearances it was beyond boring. I stopped going, one of my biggest regrets actually going to high school. I a autodidact. Everything I know i taught myself, probably because of my personality disorders tbh, you couldn't tell me anything, as a kid. Adhd and autism was a miserable time as z kid, still I'm as sharp as a die. Grammar aside, brain damage did that. Digression.

    The tower has never been a prison, it was a castle

    • @davidchilds9590
      @davidchilds9590 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Try telling that to the prisoners who were held in the Tower! Granted, it was a royal palace, not a regular, common prison, but it was used to detain prisoners of the Crown.

    • @ElphbaNightelf-jx4xl
      @ElphbaNightelf-jx4xl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The castle was built around the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest. William the Conqueror built The White Tower in 1078. It began being used as a prison from 1100 until 1952 although that was not its primary purpose.
