I too have oodles of vintage and retro crochet patterns books. The ONLY reason they seem dated is because the creators were slaves to being trendy, and once the trends passed the clothing became passé. I think if you (generally speaking) stick with classic shapes and colors and don’t follow trends you simply look put together. I watch several young content creators using vintage clothing to make very stylish outfits. I make things in colors I love. I try and make classic basic pieces that will go with several of my older pieces. Trendy style feeds fast fashion and extreme consumerism. I love new colors and appreciate knowing the trending Pantone colorways, simply so I know what will be in the stores.
It may be because I’m pushing 70, but I don’t follow trends. I actually never have. I was bullied for the clothing choices I made in high school, but discovered I was ahead of the trends once I got into college. If we could simply encourage one another to be ourselves and not try to copycat the world, we would all be a lot better off.
I love your suggestion of using different yarns to make the sweaters in older books. Ideal! Keeps the book out of the landfill and make great personal favorites.
I couldn’t have said it better! 😃
I like the tip about doing the colours or patterns in an accessory rather than a full garment. I live in black tights, tunics, and long cardigans, and was just looking at the cursed cropped tops and low rise jeans that are in now… as a tall person who already lived through that nightmare once - never again! 🤪
Hahaha I don’t blame u one bit!!!! 😍
There’s a whole series - how to modernize these vintage patterns - choose colors, crop them, how to style, etc.
Timing is a funny thing. My almost 32-year-old daughter came in this evening wearing a V-neck, diamond pattern summer top that I crocheted in the late 1990s. Made in a single, neutral color of a summer weight yarn, it looked great. It's probably been out of style a few times since I made it, but it's a classic shape and color that will keep cycling back through. 😄
That’s so awesome!
I would've never guessed 48! You look great!
Yep! Thanks 😊
If it is out dated enough it becomes vintage. Lol.
Yep! It’s that weird spot in between that can be tricky! 😂
I love crochet accessories. Right now I am making a half circle shawl and I am going to pair it with a 1940s dress that I am planning to make.
I love that idea!
You know Alt Knots would definitely turn it Hallowen themed.
Yep!!!!
Yarns have classics and trends just like clothes. A Fair Isle Sweater will always be classic/preppie. A crochet shell or cardigan will be worn for years. I have a "cropped one from early 2000's. I was looking at a crochet magazine that had crochet skirts and dresses, including the striped Missoni type sweater from Tik Tok. Literally from 2014. So wait a bit, and it will come back. My daughters are wearing the chunky crochet sweaters I made in the early 2000s. I uncovered a couple of WIPS that are crochet sweaters, I am going to update with buttons, and trim. Side note...the fun fur craze doesn't need to come back. OMG the scarves that must live in thrift stores ;) Thank you again, for your interesting, thoughtful, and inspirational videos, Shannon. All best.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 😃
The fun fur scarves that live in my wardrobe from the early 2000s when I got into knitting in gradeschool 🤣 I don't know what to do with them but I'm thinking they'll get donated soon. I can't imaging trying to frog them over 15 years later
I also think the thickness of yarn or drape of fabric makes a difference in wearability. I've made a sweater out of worsted (4 weight) yarn with the recommended hook and it was so thick and stiff. My favorite top was made of fingering (1 weight) yarn with a hook 1mm bigger than recommended. I wear that top all the time...I gave the other away.
Thanks for your insight!
Yes! I 100# agree with you!
I can't stand Taylor Swift and do not like those colors, at all!! And, post menopause, have zero desire to wear an acrylic dress!!
But.... i joined some groups for that dress, bought myself some cotton/bamboo yarn, in some pretty, monochromatic colors that actually look good on me and plan on making myself one, in a civilized length for someone in her 50s. Lol
And as someone who has always had a touch of boho/hippie in her, I'll wear that sucker long after (hopefully) Taylor Swift is popular because, imo, a knee-length shift dress, in a nice fiber, is timeless. Lol
I would LOVE if you could share the pattern of the red cute hat you’re wearing in this video. It would be perfect to add to the chemo hats I’m making. 👍😻 thanks for reading this.
A beanie video is in the works! I've all ready stated it!
I have a ton of vintage pattern books and love looking through them. ( Many are originally mine!)
Young crocheters are making a lot of shorts. Well I see a lot of shorts. I am 45 I don't know how I feel about that. Lol.
I’m definitely NOT making shorts 🙅🏻♀️
I see all the thumbnails for those videos too!
I think being modern is variable. Im big on wearing vintage style clothes - sometimes I update them with other pieces and sometimes I deliberately go old fashioned - and style really is cyclical in such a weird way and i really dont care about being trendy.. That said even i am effected by what colors are popular for a given block of time because we are all influenced by what we are around, so ive developed a sense of colors that evolves as things change around me even though I dont care to actually pay attention to it. We absorb so much just from living our life each day and shopping at stores - even groceries. Also that 90s crochet book is a gem!
Very well said! And I love your style. I was creeping around your blog/website!
Great video! I have the same feelings about not wanting to dress in a frumpy or dowdy way. Your suggestions on how to update my clothes were so good I'll have to take notes and watch this video again and again. I don't remember how I happened upon your videos but I am so glad I did. I have subscribed to your channel and I look forward to binder watching them as I work on my autumn throw..
Hello and welcome! 🤗
I really want to make the Taylor Swift crochet dress, but I'm going to do it in different colors so I can enjoy the trend but in a few years it won't be so instantly clockable as "a 2024 thing" (because it is something I could see myself wearing for years, which is honestly the only kind of things I want to make!)
That's a perfect adaptation!
@@ShannonTalksYarn thank you! 😊
YW!
Hi Shannon 🤗 hmm 🤔 lots to think about! Thank you! I can totally relate…at your age, I didn’t want to dress like my daughter…but…I didn’t want to dress like my mother! 😏🥰🧶🤩
Right!?!?! It's such a wierd age to try and find your style!
Love the tip about incorporating trends in an accessory rather than a full sweater, etc.!
Thank you Mary! Hope you’re having a great weekend!
This all makes sense. I’ve found that solid colored items look the most modern to my eye.
I totally agree with you! Just more timeless or something!
How about a pattern for the hat and yarn colors you are wearing. It is adorable and I would love to make and wear it.😊
Hi Charlene! Here's a video where I talked about this hat and I am going to be post a detailed beanie instruction video, it's in the works!
@@ShannonTalksYarn Wonderful, I truly appreciate it. Also, you look years younger than your age. I assumed you were in your thirties. This, my dear, is a real compliment😉
Thank you so much! 😊
I could totally care less about trends. Old vintage crochet patterns were awesome, and I feel like some patterns nowadays really make crochet look like a hipster, fastfood craft. (Like midriff crochet shirts and halter tops, its just gross.) And women in general have lost modesty. That's why I love old patterns, they keep modesty a priority but are very beautiful and feminine!
Great tips, Shannon! I’ve never really been into trends. I love seeing vintage patterns too! 😊
Thank you Jessie! I think you’re smart not to put too much stock in them! Hope you guys are doing well! I need to get caught up on your latest video and your new vlog!!!
@@ShannonTalksYarn You’re welcome! We are hanging in there.. very busy with the move. I have to get caught up on all your videos too! It might take me a bit.. I’m so behind 😁
Thank you Shannon xxx
You’re very welcome Katie!!! 🫶🏻
Great advice. ❤
Thank you!
I definitely remember the belts lol
😂😂😂 I love that!
Great video thanks❣️
Have you seen those short videos of tops and other crochet items but there’s never patterns and I wish there was a way to find them.
Take a screen shot and then do a reverse google search. In the google search window there is an icon that looks like a square camera. Click on that then you can share your screen shot and search for a pattern.
Good ideas here. I enjoyed this video. 😊❤
Thanks! 🫶🏻
Great tips, Shannon!
Thanks Kristen! 😃
Great tips, thx 😊
YW! And thank for watching 😃
