    My husband was melting down cans to pour aluminum ingots and the mold had a little bit of water left in it. I accidentally distracted him and he went to pour and it exploded when the metal came in contact with the water. A large chunk got caught INSIDE his glove and burned his hand so bad, terrible 2nd degree burns. I drove him to the hospital and the whole car was filled with the stench of burning flesh and then he waited 4hrs and they never saw him so we left and he went into a pharmacy and bought a bunch of stuff to treat himself. Healed fine but was very slow and now his hands have permanent scarring and the skin is sensitive.

    I dated a glassblower for 10 years (from a family of glass artists in the Hudson Valley, they own Hudson Beach Glass in Beacon if anyone is familiar with the area) and worked as an assistant with my partner. I had no experience whatsoever when I met him and so I learned by immersion and a _lot_ of trial and error. My one biggest oopsie moment was early on, when I plunged a hot blowpipe into the full bucket of water meant for solid stem pipes. The water boiled instantly and superheated steam shot out of the pipe and nearly scalded me in the face (we were kind of a fly by the seat of your pants operation and wore no safety gear whatsoever lol). Pain is an excellent teacher. Over 30 years ago I forgot to set the parking brake on a farm tractor. When I turned my back to grab the drum of trash to empty into the bucket of the tractor, the tractor started rolling toward me. As I turned back around to face the tractor I was instantly pinned at the shins by the bucket to the wall behind me. The 55 gal. drum of trash saved my legs as that too was crushed. I still have the scars on my legs and to this day I always set the parking brake. It sucks to learn the hard way but I'm glad that I learned. Some people repeat their mistakes.

      Aloe burn cream is also your best friend. Mainly for after care with bandage wrappings to keep it in, but if hospitals are too far away for travel time or hospitals are packed: Cold water as long as can stand it to access -> wash well/disinfect-> and depending on how the injury is with the burn/severity and if skin popped melted, severe injury burn cream as you wait to get checked out.
      Regardless this is for wait time until hospital can check you out as you NEED to go if able regardless, and only if educated enough about burns and how to treat it for *very* short term, and would need to tell the medical workers what you did for the injury.

    The glass glows purple because the camera sensor is sensitive enough to detect infrared wavelengths but the software isn't coded to properly interpret it. It's the magenta of digital photography

    • @caddywampa6602
      @caddywampa6602 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Nothing to do with software. Digital camera sensors can't distinguish color, so a checkerboard array of red/green/blue filters is placed in front of the sensor pixels to remove all but the desired wavelengths on a given pixel. Most cameras have a separate infrared filter over all the pixels to remove that as much as possible, but it doesn't remove 100%. The red/green/blue filters remove a bit more infrared, but not the same amount. More infrared passes through the red and blue filters, hence the purple cast. You can see this if you point your phone camera at an infrared TV remote and push the buttons. This video may also be from a security camera, and those often don't have an infrared filter at all, since they also have to work at night, with a ring of infrared LEDs on the camera illuminating the room.

      When you get the burn itself, it's not nearly as bad pain as the following hours and days.
      Those 99% water gel pads for burns are a lifesaver, I spent like 200$ on boxes and boxes of them for my hand, The only thing that really seemed to mitigate the burning sensation.

      Ya it probably varies though by what is burnt or how deep. As a teen I welded pipe and cut pipe for by dad. I was torching 8 inch drill pipe and was rolling it after cutting half of it. As I rolled it my hand on the pipe rolled in front of the torch. I was wearing buck skin gloves so my wrist was badly burnt about the size of a silver dollar.
      Me being me thought this sucks. I put some neosporin and maybe some cloth with duck tape. Then I finished cutting metal for a few more hours.
      I would wear big bandaids in the day and let it air out at night. The skin was gone basically so I assume it was like second or third degree burn but idk. But I will say it took at least a month before any skin grew back. It took forever to heal out of any wound I had. Well I did crack some ribs when a wheeler landed on me and that actually took longer to heal I think but skin wound wise the torch burning took forever.

      Unrelated situation but I was throwing away a used condom in a dumpster as a teen ( avoiding baby trap). When I grabbed it out my pocket, $80 in 20s was with it.
      I thought, hmm I better put them in separate hands before I throw it away so I don't make a mistake. After I separated it in both hands, I tossed both in the dumpster. 😂
      I just stood there with open palms thinking wtf 😞. That made no sense. Now I'm in climbing in a dumpster in the middle of the night digging through trash to find my money.

    I did a similar thing, but I had grabbed a hot cermaic crucible that had fallen from a stand that was over a bunsen burner in Chemistry class. I had briefly caught it between my fingers and it left a burned ring between my fingers. It was instinct to try and catch it.

    Welder here. dude, this is so fucking real. Back in trade school i grabbed a flat 8 inch T joint that i just ran 3 consecutive 7018 passes on with only tig gloves. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, I picked up some insanely hot metal with gloves that were not meant for that. Think about it like picking up runny dogshit with half a napkin. The heat ate through that glove like it wasn't there and some of the skin even stuck to the inside of the glove. Good times

    Been there done that. I tried to save a piece I was working on for the final of my semester. I accidentally tapped the punny rod on the bench after I finished heat treating it before annealing. I tapped the bench, saw my final project falling, and I reached my hand out to catch it without thinking. I felt the sizzle and the initial stick to my hand which is when I slung it onto the ground (not my smartest move but hey it HURT, thankfully nobody caught any of the hot flying glass). Hot glass went everywhere, my hand instantly blistered and I looked at my professor and said "I did a THING".
    Funny enough everyone else was more freaked out than I was. Sure it hurt, but thankfully South Alabama has a good nursing program so I got patched up pretty quickly. The glass teacher is an awesome man, and an accomplished glass blower, I hope he's doing well.
