    I'm a 62 year old black man and Bobby Jones was my favorite player,as a Knicks fan I hated him when he played for the Sixers, but as a b-ball fan I loved him for his defense and hustle he never took a play off and he had some of the nastiest nice guy dunks of all time! Bobby Jones should be mentioned for the 75 greatest players list without a doubt or hesitation. Particularly if by position of forward. With the fascination fans have for scorers the complete and role players get little attention. The Sixers should have won more titles with the talent they had. In my opinion Cunningham was a lousy coach and mishandled his players constantly. Considering they swept the Lakers in the finals the players were not to be denied. Moses Malone should easily be on that list as well, he schooled Kareem in that series.

  • @BasketballJones48021
    @BasketballJones48021 2 ปีที่แล้ว +112

    One of the most underrated players ever! Arguably a top5 defensive forward in NBA history.
    Bobby was a terrific defensive anchor on the court leading by example, barely got lost on rotations, one of the best at ball-denial, protected the paint, racked up blocks and steals, unreal chasedown shotblocker, then he could lock down any type of forward while also some centers and some guards. His defensive impact ranks high with the best ever.
    Plus, he could score in the mid-teens on league leading efficiency, he was an amazing finisher with either hand (soft-touch or big dunks), great cutter, great at playing in the dunker spot, rarely missed on close-range jumpers, decent from mid-range, hit his FT’s, he could rebound the ball, he was a solid passer, just a great all-around athlete, tall long and lanky, ran the floor like a gazelle, jumped out of the gym, he hustled all out on every possession, and - like you’ve mentioned - he was just a class act!
    I think Bobby made the Playoffs every year of his career (sure we can talk about teams but also says A LOT about the player).
    He’s a 4x All-Star, 8x All-Defensive 1st and once 2nd, first 6th Man of the Year, NBA champ, pretty good college career, two very good years in the ABA, played in the Olympics. Hall of Fame was long overdue.
    And of course, if DPOY was given out back then in his prime, he would’ve won it too. He was an extremely impactful player, especially in his 1977 season… just to sum it up, that year he was 9th in the league in PER, 5th in Win Shares, 6th in steals, 9th in blocks, 3rd in FG%, 1st in Defensive Rating, led the Nuggets to the best defense in the league, wasn’t even top20 in minutes yet played all 82 games! Just crazy.
    Thanks for the upload

    Wonderful video! Bobby Jones was one of my first favorite NBA players and remains my favorite defensive player. I still remember being in junior high, in Atlanta on vacation and walking into a sporting goods store. I noticed a poster on the wall of Bobby Jones in a judicial robe, perched on a judge's bench; above him it read "Secretary of Defense". I asked one of the store employees about the poster...he mistakenly thought I was inquiring about the poster next to it, a poster featuring MLB's Dale Murphy, a huge hometown favorite in Atlanta at the time. When I told him no, I was interested in the poster of Bobby Jones, the young man was kind enough to climb on a ladder, take down the poster and give it to me for free, explaining it was a promotional poster from Nike and he could easily get another one. That poster had a prominent place in my bedroom for years.

    • @zyxwut321
      @zyxwut321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a bad analogy. Pippen had better range as a shooter and was a more complete offensive player while Jones was possibly a better athlete (seriously, he was a Top 10 athlete in the NBA during his era) and certainly a better defensive player, no small feat considering Pippen's likely in the Top 25 best defensive players of all time. Jones is Top 10. He would actually translate relatively well to today's game as well, even with the tight officiating, because his defense was just so clean. He would need to gain 10-15 pounds of muscle and develop a three-point shot but otherwise his speed, range, positioning, etc. would all make him at least as successful in today's NBA.

    Worst trade in Nuggets' history, Bobby Jones for George McGinnis (no offense to Big George who was indeed a great player). The Nuggets won their division all four years Bobby Jones was there and after he was traded, they wouldn't win their division again until 1985.

    • @ARIZJOE
      @ARIZJOE 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it was a bad trade in retrospect. But George could really score and rebound. At I U, he was an absolute monster. But George had a bad smoking habit, and that really derailed his career. He had smoked cigarettes throughout his playing days, often lighting up at halftime.

    I saw two of the final games of the 1976 and final season of the ABA between the New Jersey Nets and the Denver Nuggets. Julius Erving was phenomenal as the Nets won the title in 6 games. Erving averaged 34.7 points per game despite being guarded man-for-man in every game by Bobby Jones - the best defensive player in the league. Two of the greatest players ever. Such memories.

    Bobby Jones was one of the greatest and all time favorite players to me in the league❗
    He had amazing focus and concentration and did (Everything Well) while he was on the floor.
    Very seldom do you have a guy that rebounds, plays defense, (Usually taking the opposing teams best player), initiates the fast break, gets you buckets in critical junctures of games, and can play above the rim, And Will DUNK ON YOU if your in his way!❗
    Very selfless. On and off the floor he was a calm caring humanitarian who always played the game the right way and was well respected by everyone.
    They waited wayyyyy to long before putting him in the HOF, but he was certainly deserving!
    Bobby Jones was the total package, without all the glam and glitter.
    *Total Class Act* on an off the NBA floor.◼◼◼◼

    Thanks for this video. I played baseball in college in the 1970'z but I preferred playing basketball. Those Sixers teams were amazing and who didn't love watching Dr. J. And I was just spellbound by Andrew Toney. Still, Bobby Jones was my favorite player. Someone with plenty of skill on both ends, but his defining hallmark was how he played the game, night after night. Well done on this video.

    Thank you so much for this video!!!! Bobby was my first favorite player in the league when I started watching as a kid and here I am in my middle 50's still watching and telling people about him. My early coaches said I should watch him because, as your say, he was uncoordinated offensively like me but would just close the door on opponents on D. I always thought of Andrei Kirilenko as Bobby Jones 2.0, anyone else think that? Statistically they are very similar.

    2019 did the basketball world a huge service by inducting Moncrief and Jones into the Hall. Defense is a huge part of basketball, and these two were masters at it. If you loved Ben Wallace, you’d love these two. Great video yet again!

    • @shawnyoung8752

      Never knew that. Moncreif was was a 6'3 half guy who guarded small fowards or scorers. Would take on Bird giving up 5 inches. Doctor. The guy was a pippen guy,or pipoen was a moncrief and Jones guy. Jones was THE most underrated player of fans in late 70s 80s. Players knew him. 8 time 1rst defense team says it all . I don't care about decades. Jones would have given Kobe and LeBron fits. Durant vs Jones would be interesting . Pippen would do well but Durant length might bee too much.

    I am an older black man. I started watching the NBA as a kid in the mid 70's and I saw Bobby Jones play. I was a Bullets fan and when I started watching the NBA, the Bullets were in the NBA finals playing against the Sonics. I think the year I started watching them and the NBA for that matter, the Bullets had lost the finals.
    I believe the year before the Bullets defeated the Sonics. Don't quote me on that but I know that I missed the year they won the NBA finals against the Sonics and the year they were defeated by the Sonics was when I got into basketball. Anyways, Bobby Jones was exactly the way you described him in the video. Bobby was tenacious and a defensive stalworth.
    It is amazing to me, how well you have documented these players and how on point and accurate you are with your information. You can't be no more than 30 years old from the sound of your voice. How can you be so accurate? In any event, you are definitely a very good researcher (assumption) because you are on point and I really enjoy your videos.
