Andrew Toney : The Boston Strangler Kept The Celtics Awake At Night

  • This is a look back on Andrew Toney's career. Andrew Toney was a pure scorer who always found a way to get his shot. Helping him earn two all-stars and a ring along the way. Toney would always elevate his game in the postseason in particular against the Celtics. It appeared Toney was destined for a Hall of Fame career before injuries and mismanagement got the best of him.

Andrew Toney had a “what if” career, similar to Portland’s Brandon Roy. Both, at 26-27, major injuries that had them out of the NBA before 30. If Brandon’s degenerative knees and Andrew’s feet didn’t fail, they’d both be HOF caliber players.

Got it all in memorie..it was a great time but 76's had no leadership b/c of just & still a crappie org...look how they wasting Embid career w/disfuctional teamates..It reminds me of the vid..when Bird was beating them they were so disfunctional..but yet the greastest road show in the league..but their was a lot going on as NBA wanted to not let an ABA icon like doc..out market the Bird & Magic just begging..it was not gonna happen...Doc was beloved by all still but the new bloods had arrived & been loving it ever since.

If you needed a bucket you gave Toney the ball. He is one of the NBAs greatest unknown scorers. He is the reason that great Bucks team in the 80s could never break thru. Thanks for the tribute. It was long overdue.

I always felt so sorry for that Bucks team, they were the second best team in the league but they kept running into the best. And while the Bucks and Sixers were beating each other up the creepy , dirty players, Celtics were sitting home watching on tv and waiting like mangy wolves.

Some of the best footwork ever. You could not shade him left or right. He so easily went left or right. You leaned an inch one way or the other and you were dead. And if you didn't, he just picked the side he wanted to go and went. And strong too. Too bad injuries hurt his career. I was a Celtics fan and Toney made me wake up in a cold sweat thinking about how to contain him.

Can't believe the algorithm gave me this one. Andrew was absolutely one of my favorite Sixers and a big part of their 1983 title.
    Thank you for this!

Still puzzle to this day that the Sixers whiffed on Brad Daugherty in 86'....A.T. could shoot from anywhere especially behind the 3. Brings back MEMORIES

Andrew Tony, Sydney Moncrief, Brian Winters, Lanier, Moses, Mo Cheeks, Bird, McHale and The Chief, and the winner gets to take on Magic, Kareem and Worthy. These were wars of annihilation! What did Jordan ever do? Who did he ever beat, what did he ever go through? Im not convinced…..

You had to honor AT’s driving ability. Very effective jab step. Lethal jump shot and at 6’3” he would blow by lots of defenders. His arm length was crazy. Great talent

Would have been interesting if Toney was injury free when Barkley was the main player......shame about the injuries.

While Doc is the Sixers “GOAT” and AI is Philly’s “People’s Champ”… Andrew Toney is my favorite Sixer of all time! Harold Katz made some bonehead decisions as an exec including his handling of Toney’s Injuries/feet, trading Moses. I wish Andrew was around the franchise more, we love and miss him here in Philly 😢.

Andrew!!!! I believe that the Sixers earned such bad karma over the way they treated Andrew that they may never win a championship again. Not only did they not get him proper treatment, they also smeared his character; it was criminal. I saw every home game from the 1981-82 season --- Andrew was a myth in his own time, a force of nature.

His shooting form looks so 80's awkward but the arc and motion of the ball is incredible smooth! Never researched this dude before. Glad I came across of his game

A bad foot injury ROBBED him of a great career & the fans of many more highlights, he could flat out shoot the rock, if he played today, he'd be considered a marksman...

Tragic story. Impact player from the moment he was drafted. After the championship there was at first subtle then not so subtle change in his play. Toney complained about foot pain. Ownership at for first 2 years derided Toney as slacking off or simply lieing. Long story short, he had two stress fractures in his feet. They should have sat him for a year to heal. Instead, even after the diagnosis, they chided him to return and play. As a result he played on broken feet the last several years in diminished capacity. Toney till this day will not set foot in Philly even though new management made overtures to honor him.. I get it. This guy should have had a long HOF career cut short by GM Pat Williams and others. Pat Williams is another story. He ran Toney into the ground. Working behind the scenes to trade Doctor J shortly after the championship, traded Moses Malone way too early for a crippled Jeff Ruland, passed on Brad Daugherty and bailed on the team for Miami.
