  • Hi! Part three in our "Cheap Daily Driver SM" series: picking up another parts car! These Citroens are rare and I like having lots of spare parts, even if it is a bit of work getting these rough ones home!
    Thanks again to everyone who subscribed to our channel here... Lots more on the way here soon as we approach 20 000 subs!
    Thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments; it all helps, and I read every one and will continue to try to respond to the questions.
    All the very best from me and Stella and little Francine!

    back in the 60's Citroen,and specially the DS model,and even more the SM powered by a 6 cyl Maserati engine,were light years most advanced even if compared with German BMW or Mercedes-Benz .I'm not an expert but if a remember this car ,in the 2.3liter had feature like an hydraulic actuated clutch transmission,self oriented headlights,hydro-pneumatic suspension system,and a fuel injection... yes, these cars were EFI since 69' obviously by Bosch...literally space technology for that era...

    Everyone's got 1 member of their crew whose main talent is to just get in the way...in this case, it's the wonderful Francine. As for Stella, well, she goes into the woods, so you don't have to. #Security :)

    Dude! The only glimpse of an SM I ever saw was as a kid vacationing in France with my parents in the 70'S. I NEVER saw one in Canada (Qc province) and there you are, in Alberta, finding these almost growing on trees! Cool that you will be fixing up the DS, awsome car, there is nothing like those old Citroëns for the ride. This one has the from lights I remembered seeing.

    I had never seen one of these out side of magazines until I about 16 years old. One of the customers at the service station I was working at brought one in and gave me a ride in it. I was particularly impressed with how comfortable it was even though it was not a new car at the time. I thought he was kidding when he said it would run with a wheel missing. Apparently he wasn't.

    You should create a 5 level scale for your cars. (1) "Junker" meaning it only has a present value as parts or Iron. You already have (2) "Runner" and (3) "Driver" but you should add to your scale (4) "Conveyor", meaning you can run downtown to get groceries with a fairly good amount of peace of mind that you'll return without a break-down and finally (5) "Traveler or Voyager", meaning you can go to the Rockies without incident as you did with the Citroën Safari.

    My aunt in Arizona bought a 74 (I think) Citroen .
    It was expensive & very classy .
    But she dispised it within a yr..
    Apparently it was a lemmon & it spent most of its time in the shop.
    Her husband traded it in & lost a lot of money in the trade...
    I rode in it when she was still thrilled at owning one .
    But I was 8.
    So it was just a funky shaped car to me...lol

    I've examined my "57 year-old memory banks". In Pennsylvania, where I reside, and have for about 75% of my time on this planet, I've seen exactly three Citroens which were either parked, or on the road. Two were the well-known (because they were in a Bond movie) 2CV. (that reminds me, we're having Muffulettas this Saturday, gotta get olives). The other, was one of those low, narrow rear-end jobs like they used to haul Mitterrand around in. I spoke with the guy driving that car, which was parked near me at at Doctor Who convention, in Philly. He said that the thing drove, rode, and handled like a combination between a Corvette (the performance part), and a Rolls. That model apparently had some type of adjustable suspension.
    With that said, I'll be watching this series with "Great Expectations".....

      Nev Anderson That's crazy, watching these videos I've definitely never seen another car put together quiet like these, I've been through Chevy's and Dodge's from the 50's all the way up to current and there so basic even a car built today doesn't have some of the wild shit the Citroen has.

When I was a little boy I saw and touched a DS, metal completely (or only the roof?) wrapped in darkred velvet (or something similar) if I remember correctly!? Is it possible that they did something like that in the factory in France?

    Running and nice condition SMs used to be pretty reasonable in the US about 17 years ago. I've wanted one for ages, they really are super cool and beautiful cars. Speaking of cool, oddball cars (Canadian to boot), I'm surprised you don't have a Bricklin.

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Thanks for the note... I guess I was just more determined to have an SM, and made a point of finding one and rebuilding it. They really are an amazing car. The Bricklin is really an interesting car, but I think not actually a very good one. I have seen them up close, and the ones I've seen have the surface finish of a canoe or cheap truck canopy. (These were mint original cars, too, not heaps) The surfaces are concave, the fit is poor; they just looked (again, to me; feel free to disagree) like a rough kit car. The SM is a technical masterpiece.. flawed, yes, but at least it was designed and drawn by people who knew what a car was supposed to look like. Designer Robert Opron came from GM where he worked on some of their greatest cars in the 1960s; he knew about making a good-looking car. To me, the Bricklin just doesn't have the wow factor. The Delorean was another deeply flawed exercise, but at least John Z knew how to draw a pretty car... Cheers!

    As a Rover car collector, I've always liked Citroens, especially the DS and SM. Rover was looking at them when they designed the P6 and SD1.

      General Gordon I also have a 59 P4 90 and a 66 P5 3 litre...all in all 6 Rovers in various states of condition, the goal is to get one of two SD1s going this year.

      Keith I've had a P6 and a DS..the P6 is nice for a conventional car especially with the V8 but the DS was on a different level, I enjoyed both.

    • @keithmcintyre6403
      @keithmcintyre6403 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TRUTH SEEKER I'd love a DS, and more important, my mechanic likes them.lol. I actually have 3 P6s; 1966 2000, 1969 SC 2000 automatic, and a 1969 TC 2000. My mechanic has a 3500, with an automatic, which I drove for a while. Automatics suck the life out of these cars. I can't wait the drive my SD1 with the V8 and the LT77 5 speed.

      TRUTH SEEKER as far as being "conventional"...how many cars have a De Dion Tube and inboard disc on the back, and horizontal coil springs on the front....as you know, the turning radius is unbelievable.

      Jerry Hathaway of "SM World" took a basically stock SM, strapped on some big turbos, and headed to the salt flats where his wife rolled it up over 200mph! If he can do that, I can make a daily driver out of one, haha...Cheers!
