  • I get a fair few questions about what tyres I run and what I recommend for touring Australia. I'm not going to call this a review or a even a comparison- but here's a video detailing MY experiences running two of the more popular touring All Terrain tyres over similar periods of time in similar environments.
I hope this helps someone make an informed decision.
As always, I recommend you do your own research too!
    Cheers!

Great review thanks Cam. I'm just running out my original tyres before making a tyre choice. The Falkins seem to be the right choice for my needs. I really appreciate that you took the time to answer my email about gear selection. It's appreciated.
I'l hopefully see you and your family out there one day. Cheers and thanks again.

Love the Wildpeaks! I bought 2 sets of the same on a buy 4 for 3 special before a Sydney to Cape York trip in 2019 (MUX towing a Jayco Swan with matched rims and tyres). Around 13,000ks, including coming back via outback Qld and Birdsville Track and not a single puncture. Super impressive when either side of Birdsville the track looked like a tyre carcass graveyard. Two years on they’re still going strong.

In the 90's there was a tyre which was made by Ohtsu Falken in Japan which was a Light Truck radial in 10 ply rating and it had a very thick sidewall and was quite puncture resistant in off-highway and cross-country applications. It was an AP. I think we used 235/85/16 - quite skinny and road oriented tread. Our fleets offroad got very few punctures nor stakes.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one pleased with the Falken Wildpeaks. I'd previously had Bridgestone A/Ts on my Colorado and although they gave me good life (80,000+) for a mix of highway commuting and weekend sand driving, they were not good on wet asphalt and replacements were over $300 dearer for a set at the time. My Falkens have now done 55,000km of probably half commuting and half outback tracks (Birdsville, Oodnadatta etc.) and although wear has accelerated quite a bit lately and I'll be replacing soon, I'll get the same again, because even worn, they are much more secure in the wet, even without tweaking pressures for load.

I also didn't get a great run out of the Toyo open country while some raved about them, blowouts. Bridgestone duelers, not that great either with blowouts. I did run a couple of sets of Yokahama geolander AT S and a set of Geolander plus 2 tyres, which were quiet, good grip on bitumen and dirt and reasonably tough tread, no blowouts but the AT S had very weak sidewalls so in the scrub or even driving through sticks on the edge of the road cost me a few tyres, they're no good for what I want.
Running coopers ST Maxx at the moment, unbelievably tough driving through scrub, no staked tyres when a mate that came with me had 5 flats. They are great in the mud and slop as they should be compared to an all terrain, however on gravel roads and dirt, good but not as secure as the yokahamas I was used to. Noisier tyre though not unbearable as long as I rotate them, performance on the bitumen and in the wet requires quite an adjustment to braking distances and cornering speeds.
I had seen a few people with the Falkens and wondered about them so cheers for the video.

I recently put the wildpeak at3's on my car after having KO2's for 73 ish thousand. So as Cam said you can get 4 for the price of 3. And its Tyrepower that seem to do this deal often.
So I went to my local tyrepower whom I've dealt with alot over the years and went in and asked for a price in the falken wildpeaks. The guy just went on a rant saying that he doesn't know why people want them, someone on the "internet" must've said they were good and now everyone wants them. And said everyone complains about the noise they make. Then tried to sell me Coopers, at $305 a tyre and and told me the falkens would be $295 and nothing about the 4 for 3 deal.
I left, got home and rang another tyrepower. Said I wanted the falkens and what size, he said yep and they currently have 4 for 3 deal and that makes it $255 a tyre. Needless to say they got my business . IMO the KO2's I had were very noisy an all terrain.

Wow thats terrible customer service! Glad you shopped around for a better deal! Are you happy with the AT3s having come from KO2s?

@@WildTouring So far I've done nearly 5000kms on them and some of that is dirt which they seem quite good. Feel good on wet bitumen.
I know I won't get the same kilometres out of these as the KO2'S as the wildpeaks seem softer. The KO2'S were pretty loud once half worn IMO, the fact I have monocoque chassis might not help as it can resonate sound though.
