@@Africa-ky1bg Oh, I knew a great deal about the culture, history, and music of my parents generation, much more than the current grouping of, say, 18-34-year-olds. And the American Songbook prior to their generation wasn't entirely foreign to me either. When someone offers a "reaction" to anything, I expect that his or her conclusions will be based upon past experience, education, work in a field that is comparable in some manner, or having read a newspaper or magazine. However, quite the contrary,I find these "reactors" to have nothing more to share beyond facial contortions and utter amazement that something was created at any point more than five to ten years prior. The audience reaction must be one of shock and disbelief that persons know so little and are equally unaware of what is being revealed about themselves.

This was Carly Simon's first single, appearing just as the singer-songwriter era was coming to fruition. The song shows a family life in shambles underneath its affluent veneer, with the singer fearing that her own future holds more of the same. >>
A singer-songwriter named Jacob Brackman wrote the lyrics. He and Simon met when they were counselors at a summer camp in 1967; they wrote several songs together, which appeared on Simon's first three albums. Simon cites Brackman as a major influence in her development as a songwriter, and was amazed at his ability to fit lyrics to a melody without using clichés.
It's hard to believe that a man wrote the lyrics, which are clearly from a woman's point of view, but the song came out of a conversation Simon had with Brackman. He was going through some relationship troubles that were very similar to Simon's: His girlfriend moved in with him and he was worried about giving up some of his identity and personal space as he felt an infringement on his territory.
Simon reflected on this caustic look at marriage in an interview with The Independent, March 11, 2010. She said: "When I first wrote it I thought it was an unusual thing for people to break up, and now all my friends are divorced."
This was the only single released from Simon's self-titled debut album. She followed up with Anticipation later in 1971, scoring another modest hit with the title track. Her career went stratospheric with her third album, No Secrets, which contained the #1 hit "You're So Vain."

Read her autobiography. Her home life was great in many ways. Her parents entertained Albert Einstein, Benny Good man and Jimi Hendrix. And when Jackie Robinson and his wife lived with the Simon's, Carly became the official mascot of the Dodgers. She learned about baseball from Pee Wee Reese. But it wasn't all fun and games. Her father was forced out of the company he founded and ended up dying young. Their inheritence was small and Carly blew all her money on psychotherapy. She says there were lots of secret sexual assignations in the home, and she didn't find out that her grandmother was half black until she appeared on that show "Finding Your Roots" so her mother probably had some issues about it herself.

Relationships are what we make them, good, bad or ugly. And for most of us, it's a balance if all to a degree or another. This song is the birth of relationship and commitment, and as to what ones expectations and it's reality comes out to be. I Love this.

This is the music that I miss so much from those days and wish that one day it will RETURN!
Maybe it is still out there but the Recording industry will not bring it out or release it??? There are so many songs like this, that to say you "Only scratched the surface" is a Massive understatement!
Keep digging for the Gems and maybe, one day, the Police-Tube will stop blocking the Very BEST from being posted!!!

To me the heart of the song is her confession that she will never know who she is on her own. That was a major new concept for women in the late sixties early seventies - being able to define yourself away from others. Self actualization. Great writing Carly.

Carly was so perfect. A woman my age, 53, remembers her as older, I was too young to hear her words. I grew up and appreciated her so much. Stupid me in high school was so into Jethro tull, protocol harem, I didn't hear her message until I got into college.

Kiddo, your one special girl. Not just the catching every single point of this 5 mins of musical bliss. Your face, was as receptive as your ears. Carly Simon was w James Taylor, who put her thru IT.

What a pure performance. I have watched this performance many times. You know you have arrived when
George Harrison and Art Garfunkel are your back up singers. Good Lordy!

@Donna Valentino I like the fact she sang it just as she did on the record. I hate when singers alter their songs when singing live.

I could not agree more, when you go to see a performer you are listening to hear those little things that attract you to their music and when they change it up live sometimes it ruins the experience. Some bands are good live some not so.

So very glad you have found Carly Simon, a true artist. And, it's ok about You're So Vain, I figure you must have at least enjoyed listening to it. At least, I hope you did. Thanks for another great reaction.

I had such a crush on her in 1971. I always imagined the children of Carly Simon, and James Taylor growing up in a musical dream world. It was probably as screwed up as any family though.
