Not to take anything away from Karen Carpenter (who was a terrific singer), but the best female voice ever recorded in the last 100 years belongs to Linda Ronstadt.
Let's not forget that Karen Carpenter was also the drummer and if you listen to her fills ... they are fantastic and tasty; little frills and rolls. Perhaps one of the best singer/drummers all all time ... bc of her studio quality drumming and her above exceptional voice.
These days It breaks my heart to hear Karen Carpenter. Such a sweet and awesome voice. She died from Anorexia Nervosa ...my little sister also died of it last November. May they both RIP.

I did everything I could possibly think of to try and help her but in the end it wasn't enough. This is an insidious Disease that has taken too many of our young women and girls.

Karen was a one of a kind, such warmth, depth, and purity of tone yet bright and forward, so mellifluous with a gorgeous vibrato. A breath of fresh air compared to today's musical cesspit. As a 58 year old it’s amazing to me that the younger generation knows so little about the Carpenters. Karen Carpenter died from anorexia and Richard is her brother. She had one of the best singing voices ever.

She became a world class drummer (truly) before every becoming a vocalist. She had a degree of stage fright and continued drumming in her early singing career. She felt safer behind the drums which gave her a psychological buffer between her and the audience. She began singing quite by accident when the vocalist in the band she was playing in with her brother became ill during a recording session (IIRC) and someone asked if she would consider singing so they could lay down the instrumental tracks and not waste their limited studio time. The rest, as they say, is history.. Their fame was world wide and a series of hits followed but Karen was always self-conscious and uncomfortable with fame. She thought herself overweight though everyone tried to convince her she was a stunning beauty (she was, I saw her perform live). She became anorexic in her never ending battle to lose weight even though she was perfectly petite and just the right size. Tragically, anorexia nervosa claimed her life at 32. Her death brought to national attention the twin diseases of anorexia and bulimia and great strides have been made in recognizing, treating and reversing these insidious illnesses saving countless lives. Rest in Peace Karen. The tragedy of your death was surely not in vain.
Pat Boone's oldest daughter Cherry was also suffering from anorexia at the same time as Karen, and sadly, they used to share "tips." Luckily Cherry survived, but with no thanks to her control freak father and husband who thought the way to "cure" her was to punish her and tell her what to do and not do every minute of her life.

Because in the very beginning she did have very big hips. Not fat over all, you see. I was about 12 at that time, and I was VERY selfconcious about my hips and thought myself very fat because of that. Seeing Karen on stage like that gave me a real boost of self confidence, because if she could be famous with hips even bigger than mine, it meant for me that I too could be less shy and so on! It really broke my heart when a few years later I learned Karen was suffering from anorexia, and when I saw her the next time she was so so very thin! And then she died... :( She could have been such a positive role model for girls like me and like her. But they truly made her nuts, as you said. Poor girl. Such a waste and such a crime to do that to her!
The record producers told Karen she was too fat and better lose weight. She didn’t become bulimic on her own. Men did to her what they do to most women, try to mold them into the image they want, not what her fans want. They did the same to Judy garland and countless others. Shame.

@Nelson's Rudolph Agreed, and I guess the only thing that oldsters like me (age 63) have to feel jealous about is that young people have EVEN SO MUCH MORE fine recorded music to choose from and enjoy in their lives. My generation's music becomes part of their inheritance-Beatles, Beach Boys, Carpenters, on and on, all of it. The best part is that when I was young recording technology was already QUITE GOOD and so the legacy of that era is very well preserved today for posterity. TREASURE IT, Millennials!
When one grows up hearing the rich wonderful voices that actually SING, it just breaks ones heart to listen to the stuff that is being crapped out in the last 10-15 years. I pray that more of the younger people continue to listen to the oldies and start to make a change. I know there are more amazing voices out there and it saddens me that they are not being developed like they should be.

Same here. I'm an absolute Metalhead and 35 years old and I completely adore the Carpenters. Have been a huge fan for close to a decade now. The day I'll stop listening to the Carpenters will be the day I die.
Karen Carpenter had that once in a lifetime voice. Beautiful and smooth. I remember buying their 45s and albums. When she died, that was the first time most of us had ever heard of anorexia. I still listen to Carpenter's songs. At Christmas, her rendition of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is hauntingly beautiful and always makes me cry.
I remember like yesterday when Karen passed. I felt like I lost someone in my family almost, I cried for days, the whole world did. In my opinion Karen was the greatest female singer who ever lived. There is no one else that could touch her. She was a phenomenal talent!!

Karen Carpenter and Whitney Houston are the two best female vocalist I have heard in my lifetime. Actually to good for this planet. That is why god has them now giving vocal lessons to the angels.
Karen's voice is truly amazing and timeless. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 1970's and the Carpenters were always one of my faves. Losing Karen when she was so young was very sad.
@@TwistedSither there was so much more that was not told in the movie story. For instance the final nail in the coffin was probably the fact that the guy she married only told her he was infertile shortly before the wedding (he was much older, had an 18 year old son already and got a vasectomy) and Karen's mother wouldn't let her call off the wedding. Also, unlike the tv depiction, Agnes never actually told Karen she loved her or showed any physical affection. You can even see from tv appearances where Agnes and Harold appear, it's quite clear that Agnes always put Richard first. It makes you wonder if Agnes resented Karen's taking the spotlight as the plan for Richard's career to be a concert pianist was set in motion at a very early age. He was a child prodigy. p.s. there is a great facebook group Karen Carpenter's Friends and Fans. Some of the people who worked with her are there.

I always shed some tears when listening to this song because it makes me think of Karens' Anorexia, Heart Attack and Death. Such a tragedy for a loved Singer and wonderful Person. 🤓
Anorexia was something she could control. Her producers, parents and brother pushed her in directions they wanted her to go. If they had left her alone she would have been an even better drummer....and ....couldn't do anything with her voice...that was already absolute perfection.
Often times childhood experiences that were painful impact our self image negatively. An amazing talent still so very missed.- even 38 years later.The most lovely voice I ve ever heard.
@@cheery-hex She had an eating disorder, that she battled with for a long time. By the mid-70's, her weight was down to 91 lb. Of course, nobody had really heard of "eating disorder" back then. She finally went into the hospital in 1982 complaining of dizziness and irregular heartbeat weighing even less than that. The were able to get her stabilized and she actually got back to a reasonably healthy weight and maintained it, but by then her heart had been damaged by the years of poor diet. She died of heart failure in 1983.

This song originally a television commercial for a bank. Richard Carpenter (the brother) heard it and begged the writer to flesh it out with more lyrics...and the rest is history!
Karen and Richard essentially invented the "Sound on Sound" overdubbing technique with Herb Alpert at A&M Studios. They usually did all the vocals themselves, stacking multiple instances of themselves with micrometered precision. Karen was the drummer at the beginning, but they used some others in the studio, notably Cubby O'Brian from the original Mickey Mouse Club, and members of Wrecking Crew in their studio recordings as well (Joe Osborne, et al). Her death was a massive blow to the music world. This is my favorite song of all time.

In an industry of blonde sopranos, she was a magical contralto. So much depth and color to it.

The Carpenters were a brother and sister act. Her voice was like an angel. It is so sad that she died so young because of the pressure she put on herself to be thin. You really need to check out more songs of theirs to truly appreciate her voice and the harmonies of her and her brother. R.I.P. Karen.

Karen's voice is truly amazing and timeless. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 1970's and the Carpenters were always one of my faves. Losing Karen when she was so young was very sad.

So true. I remember watching the TV movie about her life when I was just a kid. I came away from it thinking, "Why?"
@@TwistedSither there was so much more that was not told in the movie story. For instance the final nail in the coffin was probably the fact that the guy she married only told her he was infertile shortly before the wedding (he was much older, had an 18 year old son already and got a vasectomy) and Karen's mother wouldn't let her call off the wedding. Also, unlike the tv depiction, Agnes never actually told Karen she loved her or showed any physical affection. You can even see from tv appearances where Agnes and Harold appear, it's quite clear that Agnes always put Richard first. It makes you wonder if Agnes resented Karen's taking the spotlight as the plan for Richard's career to be a concert pianist was set in motion at a very early age. He was a child prodigy. p.s. there is a great facebook group Karen Carpenter's Friends and Fans. Some of the people who worked with her are there.

Anorexia was something she could control. Her producers, parents and brother pushed her in directions they wanted her to go. If they had left her alone she would have been an even better drummer....and ....couldn't do anything with her voice...that was already absolute perfection.
Often times childhood experiences that were painful impact our self image negatively. An amazing talent still so very missed.- even 38 years later.The most lovely voice I ve ever heard.

@@cheery-hex She had an eating disorder, that she battled with for a long time. By the mid-70's, her weight was down to 91 lb. Of course, nobody had really heard of "eating disorder" back then. She finally went into the hospital in 1982 complaining of dizziness and irregular heartbeat weighing even less than that. The were able to get her stabilized and she actually got back to a reasonably healthy weight and maintained it, but by then her heart had been damaged by the years of poor diet. She died of heart failure in 1983.
@theAbeElement ......Starving your body damages your organs......I believe the official cause of her death was a heart attack caused by anorexia.
@@b1blancer1 it's a shame they didn't know enough about anorexia back then, and probably should have given her a pacemaker to regulate her heartbeat.
@@SueRosalieI'm not sure it would've helped. The heart muscle itself had been badly damaged. I'm not sure anything short of a transplant could've saved her.
I really miss her, she is truly missed. That voice, is so haunting and smooth.

This song originally a television commercial for a bank. Richard Carpenter (the brother) heard it and begged the writer to flesh it out with more lyrics...and the rest is history!
That was her brother and basically arranger for the group. They did all their own background vocals
Karen and Richard essentially invented the "Sound on Sound" overdubbing technique with Herb Alpert at A&M Studios. They usually did all the vocals themselves, stacking multiple instances of themselves with micrometered precision. Karen was the drummer at the beginning, but they used some others in the studio, notably Cubby O'Brian from the original Mickey Mouse Club, and members of Wrecking Crew in their studio recordings as well (Joe Osborne, et al). Her death was a massive blow to the music world. This is my favorite song of all time.
