Contrasting primary colors will allow versatility & any combo of t-shirt, denim pants, and denim jacket. Just make sure one of the denim items is broken in well, not only for comfort and mobility but also to reduce self-consciousness. My favorite pants right now are the Savage Green by Brave Star in the Strongman fit. I can wear any of my various blue or black Type III's and also pair with my blue zip-up hoodie regardless of color combo.
I have been really enjoying wearing a black denim jacket with more business casual attire. The tale of iron snails jacket in black is perfect for dressing both up and down
No, it is black on black with custom silver color buttons/rivets. Orange stitching is actually part of why I have historically avoided some blue jean jackets. Thanks for the videos, happy holidays!
I personally think that they have to be exact match or completely different denim… if you wear blue on blue and they’re different shades that’s when it doesn’t match. But that’s why everybody has their own style if we all listened to the same rules then we would all look like clones.
I am a huge fan of perfectly matching jacket and jeans. Easy way to control that is to buy them both from the same brand and always wear them together so they fade at about the same rate.
Really enjoyed this as a middle aged man that has recently gotten into selvedge denim. Such a struggle to know how to bring in the denim jacket without looking like I’m trying too hard.
It gets harder the older you get, doesn't it! I might sound boring with this advice but I purposely framed it as 'the least controversial way to wear a denim jacket' so you don't run the risk of looking like you're trying too hard
Staying denim adjacent has worked for me as well. Dobby sashiko pants under a denim chore coat looks pretty normal but interesting enough to get compliments on the cool pants. Undyed denim can be tricky, but with enough confidence it looks good. Way different denim like Oni asphalt and a very uniform Cone Mills can look good too
surprised you didn't mention fatigues alongside chinos, seemed like one of the obvious options! especially with all the great heritage options like Orslow, Tellason, Engineered Garments etc.
Ah, fatigues a great option! The tan canvas pants I'm wearing in the video are actually fatigues! I'll put it in the article I'm writing on this video right now :D
thanks for confirming I have no “style”🤣 wearing denim jackets for 55 years…1st jacket with 1st motorcycle! not an issue I ever considered. keep on entertaining 😎
I started wearing denim on denim about a year & 1/2 ago because I wear jeans a lot and I just wasn't wearing my denim jackets because of this silly rule. Usually the jacket & jeans are just a shade or two away from each other. I tend to style pretty simply, a t-shirt & boots, but the fit on the jacket & jeans are generally spot on. Ya know what? To my surprise, I actually get a ton of compliments. Give it a shot and see what your milage is.
Personally I think it's about the contrast. If the jacket and the jeans are near identical shades of blue it doesn't look that great in my opinion. Darker jacket with lighter jeans or vice versa. Just something that breaks up the monotony.
what an interesting topic Nick, cause i became self concious about denim on denim. i have 3sixteen double black type 3s with either samurai, momotaro, iron heart, oh nudie jeans, honestly sometimes i got insecure. i have a plan to purchase rgt sashiko indigo or stealth but i dont know man, its still considered denim right?
Thanks for the videos. In my neighbour they called it double denim curse. Because somehow blue denim jacket will never looks good with blue denim pants. It's just dont match. How do you think on pairing washed indigo denim jacket with black indigo pants?
Now that's a tough one. It sounds like they contrast a lot so it's better than when the two denims are too similar. I'd prefer straight black jeans because I think if your jacket is textured/complex then the jeans are better off plain (and vice versa)
I recently picked up a chore denim jacket at Zara. Well actually it was on sale at Marshall’s. It’s a dark blue jacket and feels rather thick. I’m surprised how well it fits.
i used to love chore jackets but for some reason i went off them. i respect the hell out of them though, especially when denim as an alternative to type 1/2/3
Absolutly correct about contrasting your jean jacket with your pants Nick.... Actually I like wearing my jean jackets with khakis, chinos or canvas tan pants... Boots, my Aldens thanks to you Nick and I just bought another pair!...GG
boom! you know it's funny sometimes i can respect it when a denim jacket and pants are the exact kind and color of denim SOMETIMES but if they're two kinds of blue i think there's no saving it haha
How tall are you and what size thursday do you have on? I am almost 6-2, also with long torso and truckers are on generally on the too short side for me.
I’ll always do double denim, as long as the jacket and jeans don’t match. Lighter top, darker bottom or darker top, lighter bottom. I’ll usually wear a white t-shirt or a casual button up and then boots on the bottom. Not for everyone but I like the look.
Personally i much prefer the colous to be exact same or very very similar. I m a fan of the canadian taxido and i actually think its kinda smart. Like if you dont wear suits, it can be your unique suit. Up to a point off course. Otherwise, pair a denim jacket with a chino.
I have an even easier solution: kakishibu-dyed denim jacket. That way you can still wear all of your indigo denim jeans without going the Canadian-tuxedo route.
@@Stridewise Yeah, it has to be the pure kakishibu color for it to work. It's sort of a poor-man's leather look. It works with light blue or dark blue jeans, as well as black. I suspect it would be okay with the other pants you mentioned, too, just not anything tan or brown. The problem is it's not a common color for denim jackets, but similar shades are available for waxed-cotton jackets.
honestly I think it's fine to wear one with sweatpants or joggers because it somehow manages to dress them up ever so slightly even though it's obviously very casual. so it's like the one time a jean jacket can 'dress up' something hehe
I have worn a faded denim jacket instead of a blazer with proper wool pants, a tucked in dress shirt and derby shoes and I think it looks great for a diner after work 🤷🏻♂️ of course it’s possible that it looks horrible and I’m just making a fool of myself😢
Do most men really get this "wrong" when this is the most base excuse for style of all time ever or something? What are we wearing today, ponyboy? Oh, the same thing we've been wearing since 1956???
It's kind-of impossible to make a denim jacket formal, although I hear denim jeans and velvet dinner jackets might be a new thing overtaking the old hat tweed jacket niche?
Guys who are getting their FIRST one likely shoulda got them several months ago since it's nearly winter now. I guess in other places it's nearly summer, but then it's likely already a bit warm for jackets.

my favourite denim tuxedo: japan blue sashiko type 2 jacket + sashiko wide pants. for the "dressy" days.
hahaha! that's sick. is sashiko denim??

Dark or light denim jacket with khakis or camo pants
When pants are as patterned as camo I'd prefer subdued for the jacket, so dark. But not a big deal either way
