This airplane was literally just discontinued today. We recommend taking a look at this airplane instead: bit.ly/3gX8tzW We picked this rc plane up on an amazing black friday sale. It looks so cool. This is the E-flite Commander mPd 1.4m BNF basic with as3x and safe technology. We hope you enjoy the maiden flight of this rc plane. Disclosure: This description box contains affiliate links. I really liked the looks of that plane! Im quite sure your recommendation is very good as well but they are exact opposite in appearance. As always, thanks so much to you both for another great review!
First, I love watching you guys. The fact you care about each other shows. I can see why this plane was discontinued. Out of the box, it appears it was virtually uncontrollable. If Abby would have done this maiden flight you would have had to buy her some blood pressure medication.
I have this plane and upgraded the esc to 60amp and I'm now flying it with 4s 3000mah battery without changing the motor or prop...flies incredible! Perfectly balanced and super fast. I've had over 100 flights with that set up with no problems!
I literally did the same with mines except put a 4s 3200 pack in it, I was able to get mine over 115 mph, stock motor and prop then I decided to make mines FPV and thought I could fly around some trees like a real Pylon racer and lost all connection to the plane, totalled it lol 😭😭 now I'm deployed over seas thinking they gonna still have it in stock when I came back to the states and looked it up not in stock anymore this was my by far my favorite plane to fly 🙌🏾🙌🏾
@@kingrc6865 I'm sorry to hear that! Never feels good to lose a plane. :( the comander should have been a 4s plane to begin with. Also needs a heavier battery to properly balance it. Flying it with 2200 3s battery out of the box was almost a disaster for me due to the balancing. It "porpoised" quite a bit like you saw in this video. All the best overseas...cheers!
Commander is a great plane! Love mine. Trimming with SAFE on is not a good idea. Yes, you can do it. But then when you turn SAFE off, I hope your good and quick on the sticks. I've worked through this with a few of my first planes and helped others with their birds when they had problems. Always best to get the control surfaces mechanically centered and the CoG correct to start with. SAFE will mask trim issues. If your new to flying RC, find an experienced, good pilot to help you. Especially with maiden and trimming. Trim with SAFE OFF. Land it, park it on level surface and measure each surface. Then zero that Tx trim and mechanically adjust surface to where it was measured as trimmed. If your bird is flying true with less than three clicks of trim with SAFE off, it it's flying right and won't need any adjustments going from SAFE to normal AS3X. Arming on a level surface helps to. AS3X/SAFE has offsets for landing gear to flight level programming. Arming on a 10° down, 20° left bank can make the plane think that is flight level. Nope, not good.
One of my favorite planes. Had it for 3 years. Finally got enough hanger rash so I repainted it. Doesn’t need the flaps 😂. I upgraded my esc to run 4s, it really wakes it up! Great plane. Remove those wheel pans too, paint chips real easy on this one. Also running a heavier battery helps, I ran a 3s 3000mah all the way forward. Great video!
Abby's always doing a great job with her camera work! I don't think she even uses that mini screen anymore. She can feel where to point the camera! Keep up the excellent reviews. Thank you!
Thank you both, you are the only channel that I constantly check for new videos. I love your content and love that you thank God every video. Stay safe and keep doing what you do.
My experience was just like yours. As soon as I took off for my Commander’s maiden flight, it became pretty obvious that the setup was really wrong. I had a series of “Oh crap” moments just trying to keep it in the air and get it down in one piece. That was last year, and it’s been in my basement ever since; but plans are to take it to the field again today and get it sorted out. I love the styling! Man, is that a nice-looking airplane - to me anyway. But it’s frustrating when a semi-experienced modeler such as myself takes pains to get everything right during the build... especially the CG... only to have the thing go nuts as soon as it leaves the ground. As was your experience, it was sort of manageable in SAFE Mode, but taking it out of SAFE made it climb steeply. Thanks for the review! It was really helpful.
Just to follow up, the problems I had on the maiden were just an oversight on my part. Somehow I missed that the elevator was raised about 3/16” with the stick in the neutral position. Don’t know where my head was on that one, as I’m a pretty meticulous builder. Yesterday I adjusted the linkage, and ended up having a couple of very nice flights. It still took a couple clicks of nose-down trim, but apart from that it was brilliant. I love this plane. :-) I guess my only complaint is that this is apparently how it was set up at the factory, and lots of other folks have run into the same issue.
Nate, I have had my Commander since Christmas 2017, it's my "if I'm only gonna take one plane to the field toady plane" I just love it, it will do any type of aerobatics you can throw at it short of 3D flight. It has a beautiful presence in the air, it will slow down to a crawl for landing with full flaps. However everyone really needs to do a complete check of the control surfaces on the ground before a maiden and get the surfaces mechanically centered before ever attempting to fly, other wise undesirable results may occur.
That looks like a pretty cool plane. I don't understand HH's mindset in discontinuing it and still producing junk like the Duet. Nice video, good flying and Abby's camera work is great.
I finally got my Maule figured out as far as a binding issue. I went out and lengthened and widened the glider airfield yesterday with my old Ariens orange riding mower. I had rain chasing me the whole way. No one has been using this beautiful field but thats going to change now! My thought is no one really wanted the field to be used and the farmer that has been loaning the property will not maintain it because he doesn't want anyone to complain about noise. The thing is, most planes are now electric, so there is no excuse for not to use it, glider or otherwize. The person I contacted said electric planes are fine. just no nitro.
Hey Saylors! Of all the plane videos I've watched, I think that's the first time I've seen you do a manual trim adjustment! Cool to see and great to know!
Have you ever built and flown any of the FliteTest models? They’re really fun to build. A bit tedious if you go the “scratch” build route, but the kits are a breeze. p.s....Abby, is there any way you could run the video out on your camera to your fpv goggles for shooting on bad days? Just a thought...
I recomendid this as well they are great. I wish i could get a decent reveiw from somone other then flight test. Just wanna see someone elses perspective on it
This is one of the best sports planes I have ever flown, and one of the most beautifull foamies ever made. I hope they will bring it back in an updated version with retracts, that would look awsome. Flew it a couple of years with 2 3S 2200 in prarallell, but now I have put an 11X8 prop on it and are flying it on 4S 3300's. Both the esc an motor handles 4S fine with the smaller prop and the power is awsome!
Looks like you had a good experience with the plane. Great job, Saylors! My buddy has this plane and he had similar elevator trim issues on his maiden. I helped him with the mechanical setup, just like you did, and now its one his favorite planes. Great video!!!
I love what you and Abbey do. I bought the xk a100 jet. What a nice machine. When it comes to Jet R/C I really like the e-flite F 15. Like your video on it. So I bought it. If I ever look at buying an r/c aircraft, Nate is the best. You are honest and true. Love you guys. Thumbs up for everthing you do.
Really cool plane, unfortunately Flite Test released the G-44 Widgeon which I put together a few minutes ago... I'll put it in my list though. Be well and stay safe!
Ditch the wheel paints and upgrade the servos....I used the wheels from the Flyzone Beaver and from the Timber. The Landings are WHY better with The bigger wheels and without the wheel pants. Its a SHAME they discontinued this....Hope Horizon Does a V2 4s!!!Metal gear servos!!!!Nav Lights Smart Esc New paint scheme No Wheel Pants for better grass landings. I guess i better get spare parts now. Great flying and Looking Plane. I plan on upgrading mine to 4s Nav Lights New Paint Scheme Servos...
I also really like the plane and have flown it a lot over the last six years. E-flite has announced that the Commander will be back in 2022. Equipped with better (metal gear) servos, the ability to fly it with 3s or 4s and in a new blue color scheme.
I recomend a holystone hs110d. Its a bit pricey but its a good drone. If you have the money go for a simrex x11 this one has gps and a gimble. Be warned dont ever get somthing without reveiws lol had to cancel an order today never got shiped
I have bought three of them . I just love the commanderit has to be one of the greatest airplanes that they ever came out. I'm so glad you're showing it and giving a review on it. Some people do upgrade to a 4s.if you knew the story behind this you would know that to RC expert pilots designed this airplane that's why it's such a awesome airplane
Went into the local store looking for batteries for my Conscendo Evolution and saw this BNF. Since I'd seen your review and knew it was discontinued, I didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. It was also cheaper than it was when HH pulled it.
Yes, the Commander is a pretty plane. It was recommended by my club members for me to get one, because they fly so well. 1400 wingspan is too big for me to comfortably transport, so I had to find an alternative. I believe a few of them are flown on 4s at the club with no modifications, except for oversize landing gear to handle our grass field. Suggested pilot name: Ulysses S. Grant
I really like that hardware connecting the control wire to the control horn. Imagine you get to the field for your maiden with a control surface that out of trim and you've got a Z-bend connection... that would suck. [Maybe your club stocks control wire, plyers and such?]
I bought two of these and just love them they just continued it I don't know why? You look at the history on this two model airplane guys designed it that's why it flies so well the best RC airplanes ever made.
I've had mine 2 years you have push the battery far forward mine used to do that use a 3300 helps the nose is light you can get up to 8mins. I just flew mine yesterday at the park.
I've had two of these now and both needed mechanical trim on the elevator and the battery pushed right forward to counter the crazy amount of up elevator. My safe mode on both points slightly downwards which is annoying although I hardly use it now so it's ok. Great plane though!
@@hstone0808 Just make sure you place it in the right direction and be sure its perfectly level but before you fly it activate safe and tilt the plane left and right forward and backwards and make sure the control surfaces react the way they would in a safe ready plane make sure that if you hold the plane level you're control surfaces level out without any trim
My own general rule of thumb is perfectly straight, since rudder wont make you wipe out as bad as elevator could. The tiny amount of rudder trim needed due to torque can easily be trimmed up mid flight. Most people probably wouldnt even be able to recognize motor torque pull, though some planes would be worse than others. Hope this helps! 😃👍⚓😎
What does it mean to have a brushless motor? and is it special/important in any way? I ask cause its in a lot of the titles and descriptions of RC vehicles but I don't actually know what it does
Brushless uses points along the motor to produce current that pushes the stator along rather than carbon brushes that are inefficient, noisey and reduce power to the motor due to friction. Brushless produces more power or thrust and Instead of using Nicad, it requires lipo because it produces a more stable power supply that doesn't taper off at a curve, instead it follows a straight line, then drops off suddenly. I have one had over a year had to put a new servo in the rudder salvaged one ftom a old wrecked plane. Flew it today in wind and it had a weird tail wag can't figure it out.
How do you guys get larger planes like this into your car along with your daughter? I just picked up a PT-17 with 1200mm wingspan and I have no idea how I am going to cram it into my little Scion tC along with two car seats for my kids. (Yeah, I didn't plan this purchase well...)
hey guys, i have an awesome new effect jet from banggood i think would be great for you guys to review. It’s called the QT mode T45 V2. It has retractable landing gear and 70mm ducted fan. It’s only $200 and has a wingspan of 960mm.

Why on earth would you not level your elevator control surface before the maiden? Setup process 101!!

Sometime you have to keep the plane level by raising the rear of fuselage when activating AS3X, while plane is level carefully throttle plane.

Number 13 glad y’all are doing well, thanks Nate for the work that y’all do....
Enjoy your videos well done again !
Wing and tail from the 30's, nose from the 2000's
And you have the ball joint in the low rate position on the horn.
It almost looke like a geebe mixed with a piper mixed with a extra

#40 second squad
Amazing video
WHY!? WHHHHHYYYYYY!? So mean, showing me this beautiful plane that is discontinued!!
Well, it have been available for several years so you should only blame yourself if you havent seen it before now ;).
I've had mine 2 years you have push the battery far forward mine used to do that use a 3300 helps the nose is light you can get up to 8mins. I just flew mine yesterday at the park.

Remember Nate Airplanes don't know wind only pilots do.
Nice
I put a bigger ESC with the stock motor ran it on 4S..... Man oh man 🔥🔥 GPS meter track 115 mph 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Great video, awesome flying and cool plane
Crazy question. Can you put SAFE in a plane that didn't come with it?
Yes
@@hstone0808 Just make sure you place it in the right direction and be sure its perfectly level but before you fly it activate safe and tilt the plane left and right forward and backwards and make sure the control surfaces react the way they would in a safe ready plane make sure that if you hold the plane level you're control surfaces level out without any trim
Nice 👍 maiden flight ✈️ good job Nate
Thank you Kirk 👍⚓😎
TheRcSaylors your welcome
Would this plane or the valiant be the next plane after the sport cub s?
Worst boat week ever love the vids keep em cumn guys love it
Commander Ron rolls off the tongue pretty easy...
Does this plane have the different levels of safe, beginner intermediate and advanced or is it just on or off ? Thanks for another great video.

Commander Cody should be his name
That's good! Cody is my brother, so of course I like that 😃👍⚓😎
I run mine stock on a 4s all day long no problems!...it also needs some nose weight in my opinion
Did you guys ever finish building that G Bomb Truck I think you made it to part 8 ?
When you trim, should the rudder be perfectly straight, or a little turned to counter yaw?
My own general rule of thumb is perfectly straight, since rudder wont make you wipe out as bad as elevator could. Nice plane! 👍🙏⚓😀
How did u get a red one?!? I can only find blue
Wow how was it discontinued already. Must have not sold well.
How do you know when your Tx trim is "centered"? Is there a certain tone? It'd be nice if there was a graphic display.
Both computer Tx's and non-computer Tx's have a center tone. It's a different pitched tone then the one you hear when scrolling. When you hear it, you're centered.
Great plane, love mine...too bad it's been discontinued, and no longer available.
Lol how did you pop the push rod back in on the elevator tho
Awesome video Nate and Abby 👍👍😎😎
Discontinued already? That sucks. The reviews weren’t that good, maybe that’s why.?
Nice!✨🤗✨
Hi Rc saylors
I would like if u can review the s66 drone pleeese
(sry that I'm not early)
You are a better pilot than I am, and I am not criticizing, but I would like to see you let the tail rise off the ground before you rotate on your take offs. (when flying tail wheel aircraft) Thank you so much for what you share with us, God bless.
Good job 👍👍👍Mine is in the post 🤠🤠🤠
I love my Commander. I fly it with a 3S 2,200mah battery and she flies great! 👍👍
Is this plane 4 or 3s?
The version he flew in this video (V1 / red) is 3s. It's been discontinued unless you find it used.
The new version (V2 / blue) is 4s.
I have one had over a year had to put a new servo in the rudder salvaged one ftom a old wrecked plane. Flew it today in wind and it had a weird tail wag can't figure it out.
Hey guys. What is the chance you'll flight test the Motion RC OV-10? I'm interested in this plane and would love to get your opinion on it.

How do you guys get larger planes like this into your car along with your daughter? I just picked up a PT-17 with 1200mm wingspan and I have no idea how I am going to cram it into my little Scion tC along with two car seats for my kids. (Yeah, I didn't plan this purchase well...)
Take the wings off?
