I had an 86 tourglide. It weighed 1,000 lbs wet. Rode like a dream but I always thought I'd like a little more power. On my 90 FXR, I had to drop the front motor mount to get the rocker covers and rockers off. Thanks again for sharing.
I use a Loctite product with small grain of artifical diamonds to enhance the grip. With that I can take a worn Allen key together with a worn bolt head and still get enough grip to shear the bolt. If you wiggle the Allen key in the screw head with this paste, the grain gets stuck in the screw head. It's truly a wonderful product.

The manual I have gives me an idea of what to do but it's nice to actually see it being done. My street glide had a 103. She weighed around 950 lbs. While she was heavy, she cruised pretty light for a big heavy machine. We traded her in for 2 bikes so my lady could have a bike of her own. I miss that big old thundering 103. The deuce is better to ride. I just need a 6th gear. Always good content brother thanks for sharing!
As usual a fun and informative lesson. The box end of a combination wrench acts as a good cheater bar for tight places as well. I like the tubing tho, great idea.
Late to the video but I believe I hung a valve on my 98 low rider. That or something broke off in the head because the piston is hitting something on its way up. Went and bought a 15 street bob to ride for the rest of the season so I can tackle the job this winter. Great video and glad to see that I won't have to pull the whole engine to at least diagnose. Much appreciate you making this video

Just a quick update Mike, I still can’t walk yet but I now can stand on my one good leg I’m starting to have limited use of my left arm as well. It’s actually kind of nice I feel a little bit more independent. I still doubt I will ever be able to ride again but there is always hope not sure I would ever ride like I used to.
This is a great channel! I bought a 1995 Heritage last fall and your videos are helping me get a better understanding of how it's put together. If you happen to have an itch to do a video about replacing the belt drive on one of those, that would be really cool. Thanks for all the great videos, they're really well done!
It isn't an itch. I maintain my own stuff and try to help a friend here and there. Replacing a belt on the Softail frame is an all day job. I'll do it when it comes up. I'm sure it will, but I can't say when.
I am happy to see these videos on the Evo. Most my mechanical skills on Harley's is Flathead Pans and Shovleheads. I got my first Evo last fall after selling my twin cams. I have seen the bolts in the rocker covers on stroked Evo's pull out of the case. I have not seen that in stroked shovleheads what is that from. I am a big fan of factory spec motors because of failures I've seen in strokers.

I did the top end on an Evo Sportster last year. On the Evo Big Twins do they have the rubber umbrella seals for the breather? If so, how are they oriented? The Sportster had them right over the head breather outlets to the back of the air cleaner.
Love your vids Mike but a tip for ya and those intake bolts on the breather side , if you would have just grabbed an Allen Key that was NOT cut you would have had clearance from the head to crack them buggers free , lol just hate seeing a brother struggle , Tip have 2 Allen key 1cut 1 not cut ahhh better .......👍👍
Wouldn,t an allen socket work on the right side socket screws? I had to cut an allen wrench short like that to take my front marker lights apart. Great video Thanks.

Good Morning, definitely like your work!! I have a 98 fatboy, replaced stock cam with a Andrews EV-13, hydraulic lifters, adjustable pushrods. I like the difference it made. Question please, getting top end clater can s&s pushrod be adjusted out to solid?? Thank you in advance
Do not defeat hydraulic lifters. You may not be getting oil to those lifters. Clean the tappet screen. Are your lifters new, or the originals. When the rollers go bad on those lifters, they must be repaired or replaced. If you need to pull the lifters, and inspect them, be careful. If a roller has gone bad, there can be metal in the cam chest. Not good.
Thank you ! Very nice to see how you do it, since I happen to have a 98 Fatboy as well. I have used the Harley-Davidson New heavy synthetic gear oil 80W-140 in my bikes this year. Could that be harmful to the brass in my 1961 four-speed transmission ?

@@pacificmike9501 ended up pushing the shafts for the rocker arms out, removed the rocker arms and pulled the pushrods out and I had plenty of room after that.
Hey Mike, very nice video. Why is the intake manifold wrapped? Is it because so the gasolinetube is protected from heat? Ì m thinking about that, because sometimes i have trouble to kickstart my bike (only kickstarter). More when the motor was hot after riding. Could be that the gas in the tube evaporates. That's all possible. But, my friend Jim is an engineer. He experiments with lots of stuff. He was playing with "manifold temperature." I think he has recovered and is over it now.

It´ s only I do not find the reason why my bike sometimes starts very easy and sometimes I had to kick it more than 30 times (with breaks). Maybe you can show your experience to kickstart (I saw your video, but i have an evo build 1996 with S&S carburetor) with cold and warm engine again. With pleasure strength on upper point piston, setback, prime engine and what to do if sparks may be wet. It would be a pleasure to me, maybe to some other guys also ? Those pesky screws holding the intake flanges to the head are hard to shift but I use a small 1/4 hex driver bit and a 1/4 a/f ring spanner - think you call them box wrenches.....

I also have a fatboy, 2005 15th anniv, silver, 2 -1 V&H ,new s&s crank,g37 Andrews gear driven cams ,hf Fueling oil pump,camplate,new rings and a new primary bearing and a bdl sprocket. (that ol' 05 comp, was drivin me nuts,w/ those spring pack replacements) i was in the primary, trying to quite up some racket, from my Bdl and manual 05 primary chain tensioner, so i was tighting the back strap torx 40 5/16 x7/8 screws, that hold the primary tensioner ( the graded backing plate) and i SNAPPED THE SCREW in two. Im a dumbass, i thought the torq valve for those was 20 FOOTPOUNDS???? please dont ask me what i was thinking!! Do i need a new inner primary??????? or can i back that screw out of the aluminum inner primary???? looks like there is not alot of screw left to access. ty sooooo much in advance Mike!!
Extracting broken bolts is almost a specialty in itself. There are people who are very good at it. Machinists are usually the best. Sometimes a good welder can bale you out. I'm not saying you can't do it, but, practicing on things less critical than your inner primary is a good idea.
Ty, very much Mike for your quick response, my good man. yes, my indy took the job, He removed the backside of the flathead,machine 5/16 x7/8 screw , out of the primary rack adjuster bracket. Thank god i do not have to get a new inner primary, i thought i really bit into it, with the torque wrench. So , he removed the screw,installed new one, and i left my manual 05' prim adj. in!! Bike runs as it should. I have to stop getting so paranoid, with the bike, and just ride it,eh!! words from my dad in heaven:" Richie...just ride the damn bike,will ya"...ty again mike! ps....he banged me for 350$, and he reused the primary gasket!! believe it it or not, he is one of the best indys, in huntington, ny, im just suprised. @@pacificmike9501
Not enough information. 10K on a new motor, or 10K on a rebuilt motor? 10K on a fresh top end? Was it cleaned properly and torqued together properly? Did it receive proper parts? Is it stock, or a real hot rod? Was it abused? If all those things are answered, pull it apart and look at it?

Hello mike I have a pair of S&S super stock heads like new never been used still in the factory S&S box no piston will sell for a good price if interested the will work on Evolution 80 cubic inch motor.
I've had them on my Shovelhead for, I don't know, probably 30-35 years. I used to live where there was a lot of fog. And, I used to ride at night a bunch.

Yes, the big baggers weigh that. Dropping the motor down in an FXR really makes it easier to do things to the top end.
Man, the Evo is a great engine. Straightforward, smooth design. I won’t get rid of my shovelhead, but some day I’m going to have an Evo.

Thank You. Lowrider, you can lower the engine if necessary. Easy to do rocker boxes in that chassis. Much more room than Softail frame.

Use a 1/4 ball end allen on the intake bolts ....Good video Mike...

Hard to put a 4 speed into a 45. Paughco makes a frame for just such a combination.
Work on them all knuckles pans shovels evos you got the skills.

How do you get the back side to slip out? I got the front with no issues but the rear is being a pain with the frame being closer.
It's not easy, and then, it slips out. Go slow, jiggle right and it happens.

Ty, very much Mike for your quick response, my good man. yes, my indy took the job, He removed the backside of the flathead,machine 5/16 x7/8 screw , out of the primary rack adjuster bracket. Thank god i do not have to get a new inner primary, i thought i really bit into it, with the torque wrench.
So , he removed the screw,installed new one, and i left my manual 05' prim adj. in!! Bike runs as it should. I have to stop getting so paranoid, with the bike, and just ride it,eh!!

ps....he banged me for 350$, and he reused the primary gasket!! believe it it or not, he is one of the best indys, in huntington, ny, im just suprised. @@pacificmike9501

Not enough information. 10K on a new motor, or 10K on a rebuilt motor? 10K on a fresh top end? Was it cleaned properly and torqued together properly? Did it receive proper parts? Is it stock, or a real hot rod? Was it abused? If all those things are answered, pull it apart and look at it?

Are all the rocker box mounting bolts the same length?
No. The 1/4" bolts (3 of them) are all the same length. The bolts that go through the rocker shafts are the two longer ones.
Hi mike, the handle bars on mikes bike, I really like the shape of them. Do you know or could you ask Jim, where he might have acquired them ? Are they original to that bike ? Ive been trying to find a set for quite some time. I cant seem to find a set like what I'm looking for. The ones on Jims bike sure look like what ive been imagining.

I've had them on my Shovelhead for, I don't know, probably 30-35 years. I used to live where there was a lot of fog. And, I used to ride at night a bunch.
