Mike, thank you. Your evo videos are a huge help. I bought a worn out 98 Road King that was left for dead because it needed so much TLC. Im rebuilding it one bolt at a time and love it. This for the help.

I did rocker box 's on a buddy's 97 evo 5 yrs ago , over 30 minutes trying to get the angle right the 1st time around . I had his wife video it so the 2nd cylinder was much like yours a slam dunk , what do they say , practice makes perfection ! Yeah right !! lol. Another awesome video bud !

Mike, did the later Evo motors eliminate the ticking from the rocker shafts rotating when running, due to excess clearance in the notch to the bolt? I was sorta surprised you didn't use a sleeve like a Rocker Locker to get rid of it. Just curious. Thanks for your knowledge and sharing.

No they aren't. Buy a service manual. I will help, but this is not a service where I quote everything that you can easily look up in your service manual.
Mike, What does it mean if you have an andrews cam and your rocker shafts slide in easily with adjustable pushrods installed? Like should there be tension on the valve spring? Front piston TDC. I see you had to drive theses shafts in and it makes me wonder if somethings off on my bike.
I'm assuming you're working on an Evo. If the front piston is at TDC, then both front cylinder valves are closed. Unless the two bolts that hold the rocker shafts in are present, those two shafts can be removed or turned.

Yes. But now you've done it. Check the bores and, if they're within wear limits in the service manual, hone the cylinders lightly and replace the piston rings at the same time. Remember to fit those rings and, as long as you're there, lap the valves and replace the valve seals. For a while there, base gaskets were the first thing to go in an Evo.
".....without a rocker box". Hey, I've seen stranger things. Mike, ive been dealing with a engime noise that I believe is in the top of the engine. I had the rocker hox cover off the front cylinder ( where the sound seems to come from). The rockers, intake particularly, had quite a bit of side to side movement. I could grab it and slide it from the left to right. Is that normal ? Is there a standard for how much left to right movement is allowed for the rockers on the shafts ? I get a rattle when i roll on to the throttle and when i ropp off the throttle. Also, when at cruising speed. Basically when the engine isnt under a load from acceleration or deceleration. Under acceleration there is no noise. When the bike speed (mph) levels out with the throttle position it will start to rattle.
The only way to avood this noise in the engine is to be constantly speeding up and slowing down. Its very much not enjoyable. The engine sounds good at idle. Even when reving the engine up in neutral, it sounds good. Get going down the road and it rattles.
@@pacificmike9501 im pretty sure you are right Mike. I stopped by a independent shop the other day. He took me in the back and started a bike that had bad litters. Sounded just like my engine noise.

On an Evo, the exhaust pushrods are longer than the intake pushrods. Check them all. If there are two lengths, the intakes are short and the exhausts are long. If there are three lengths, the longest is always the front exhaust. The next to the longest would be the rear exhaust. The two shortest would still be the intakes.
Think about it. The cam is going to lift farther. The hydraulic lifter will become a different length. You need adjustable pushrods. I know your Softail is an Evo and they came with nonadjustable pushrods.
I thought that is true. Higher lift of lower whatever the case and our valve open and close is changed . Just making certain everyone still understands it’s ok to ask questions that’s all 😆. Thanks Mike!

I built my Panhead engine completely while being heavily medicated, the result of an accident. I did things over and over, until I was sure I got them right. It was a lengthy process. That motor has been together for a long time now. It can be done. Take it slow. Just be careful, thorough, and love it together.

Never had that problem with Evos. They just wore until the rockers made noise from endplay. No problem, just typical Evo sound.

It has a 42 MM flatslide Mikuni.
I'm sure your experienced hand is a good torque indicator.
It's fairly close to what's needed. The old bikes don't have published torque specifications for every assembly
I’m probably jumping ahead but will you be changing the jet size of the carburetor if so what size are you going to select

Question , does the evo get the same rocker shaft slap on the bolts like a twin cam , is there any need for rocker lockers ? .
It's something I've never noticed. They just wear and slap side to side.

A good aftermarket set, Jim's, Feuling, S&S all good brands. Replace lifters and pushrods (you'll want adjustable pushrods).

Evo rocker boxes do wear. But, it sounds like a possible lifter problem. I'm afraid I'd have to open things up and inspect the valve train.
A buddy of mine had a noise that was driving him crazy, till he saw that his key ring (or something on it..? ) was sometimes hitting his horn cover.

Mike, I have a s$s 124 Evo with a 740 cam, this motor has had a ticking noice from the crate , any ideas to quiet this
Hard to say. Have you contacted S&S? How many miles with this noise?
Witch way dose the gasket go? The gasket I have is not flat . What side is up?
Check the service manual for the proper cutouts.
Instead of a torque wrench, you can use a mirror:-)))

The difference between adjustable and non adjustable is to compensate for the different valve lift of the different cam grinds.

That's merely a matter of personal preference. I certainly don't pull a motor just to rebuild or service a top end.
