  • In this video I talk about side and what it does to the cue ball...and the object ball...and just when you think you've worked it out, it changes!! Lovely.

    Hey man!! Big, big fan of your game. I have been watching all your videos since the very start and I must say that you are doing an amazing job in helping people learn more about Snooker.
    There was just one thing that I wanted to tell you is that if you intend to reach a larger audience you have to put better titles and thumbnails on your videos so it reaches a lot of people.
    I hope you'll look into it and hopefully implement it.
    Cheers!

    Hey Michael, wicked videos. Keep it up! I'm looking forward to getting back on the table and trying out some of the things I've seen from the stuff you've posted. 10/10!

    Great video. After the lesson you gave me in Stockholm I’ve been practicing the zig zag reds drill where you love the white to the other side to play the red into the corner pocket. Really coming along. Thought it was beyond me in the beginning. Feels like a magic trick

    Hi Michael, loving the videos really informative and well explained. Quick question- how important do you think playing with side is? Do you think someone can play to a good standard playing centre ball (up and down the white with screw/top)?

      Thank you.
      You can play to a decent level but the game is made harder always striking centre.
      See my video on helping side for an explanation why. 👍
      Helping side? What is this sorcery?

    Damn, have I had this the wrong way this whole time? I thought the harder you hit it the more the squirt is greater than the spin induced throw. But you're saying it's the exact opposite. Now I'm confused.

    Looks like you're playing both low and to the left on the cue ball, playing that red off the green spot, causing it to take the stun/t-line. Is it possible to replay this with only side and no stun effect, or is it inevitable with that much power?

    • @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching
      @MichaelHoltSnookerCoaching  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s low right from the players perspective. How high or low depends on where you want the white really, I just demonstrated a shot low and right to show the change in how you allow for the not centre striking. You can play it with or without stun.
      The main point here is the player has to work out for themselves exactly where they address on the white to play this/any shot due to the amount of variables that can influence what the white does after leaving the tip.

    Hi Micheal we talked about helping side when I came to see you, I remembered you told me to aim thicker🤔 do you mean to aim thicker if you want to hit the cue ball hard? For me if I am using helping side I need to aim thinner, am I right?

      Hello.
      The point is that when using side you have to use your own judgement for whichever shot you are playing. In the video I try and explain how the pace and amount on a shot can change how you allow for it.
      With helping side the potting angle isn’t changed too much as the throw and amount of side cancels themselves out. If I had to choose it would be slightly thicker. But like I say you have to work this out for yourself as different people will see it slightly differently.
      This video isn’t about helping side which is a very small amount, it’s about more side where you’re trying to change the angle off the cushion. This changes how you have to allow for it.
      👍

    Hi 👋, I'm bit out of topic..Please Correct me if I am wrong, I think you love Playing Exhibition Shots and most probably attacking snooker rather than Great Safety and it's Somehow Kills your Consistency in Game...

    I think in the pool world its known as back hand english.

  • @vmax4steve524

    The nap of the cloth it what makes side different for snooker players than it is for pool players who play on napless cloths. I think you're wrong that the spin on the cue ball throws the object ball, what's really happening with reverse side is that you're playing a mini swerve shot, especially when the cue ball is spinning in the same direction as the lay of the nap (baulk end to top end), against the lay of the nap the swerve is less but still there.
    Read Ray Reardons book Classic Snooker, he goes into detail why this 'curve ball' as you so aptly put it, happens.

    • @thebenevolentsun6575
      @thebenevolentsun6575 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It does slightly throw the object ball especially on slow shots. He shows a demonstration where you deflect the ball right to hit the ball thinner than the potting angle and still pot the ball because the side throws the ball ever so slightly with the spin.

    • @vmax4steve524
      @vmax4steve524 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thebenevolentsun6575 Ity doesn't hit the ball thinner, the cue ball comes back onto the correct potting angle because it swerves minutely. We're only talking about a millimetre here over a two foot distance. but that's all that's needed when a ball is ever so slightly in the way of the object ball.
      This shift happens when the spin on the cue ball transfers from horizontal to a 45 degree angle, it happens in a moment at slow speed.
      Play with a striped pool ball as your cue ball and you can see it.

    • @thebenevolentsun6575
      @thebenevolentsun6575 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vmax4steve524 What you are saying is true sometimes, but the cue ball doesn't always swerve enough to reach the original potting angle. As Michael said, when using a small amount of side the effects counteract each other, but on hard shots the deflection is greater than the throw, and on particularly slow shots the throw is far greater than the deflection. There are so many factors that affect both throw and deflection that its basically impossible to come up with a solid rule for playing with side.

    • @vmax4steve524
      @vmax4steve524 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thebenevolentsun6575 the solid rule for side is to take into consideration the deflection of the cue ball, which is opposite to the sidespin applied, and the resulting swerve of the cue ball as it transfers from horizontal spin to 45 degree spin in relation to the lay of the nap on the cloth and the power applied to the shot.
      In other words trial and error, see the results that fail and learn from them rather than believe that two highly polished surfaces have enough friction between them on contact to transfer spin from one to the other.
      If that was the case then every contact would be a kick and the game would be impossible.
