I remember this game well, as I watched it. Let me state that I am a Tennessee fan, my son is a Gator fan. I am not a fan of either Iowa, or Florida. To this day, I still remember that horrible facemask call, which still defies logic. How a ref can call a facemask penalty on the wrong person, is simply incredible. I remember telling my son about what a terrible call that was, and how his Gators got breaks the entire game. Also, the off-sides on the onside kick recovery. That entire game, Iowa had call after call, go against them, in a game they deserved to win. I agree...this was the worst officiated game in history. Florida always seems to get these...The "catch" which wasn't, against Tennessee, etc. But for an entire game, this one takes the blue ribbon for bad officiating.
Could not agree more. This buckeye fan has never seen anything like it. It was as if the refs had simply pre-ordained that Florida was the better team and so what was the point in actually calling things fair? Iowa though, was having none of it and kept playing hard.

This ranks up there with the officiating at the 2022 Alabama vs Tennessee game. After a performance like this, the refs should be banned from calling another game. Looks like a payoff for somebody somewhere.
No question whatsoever there was a payoff and the game was fixed. Bad calls happen but not like that. That was rigged. One call makes it obvious. 12 men on the field is a call that officials watch like hawks. The referee 5 feet from the 12th man running off of the field not calling it is so ridiculous you have to laugh at someone who doesn't think it was rigged. The only question is: "How much money did they make off of it?" 5 more ridiculous calls just add to the joke.
Rolo Tamase it's possible (don't know for sure) that he passed on calling the 12 people on the field because the official determined that the extra person did not interfere with the play. As for the face mask, well, there's no excuse for getting that call wrong. 15 yards going the wrong way does make me wonder what went on behind the scenes before this game. Did the league commissioner tell the officials to call the game this way? Did the head referee simply decide to tell his crew to call it as such? If the commissioner is at fault, then he or she was hopefully banned for life after this travesty. Oh my god were those refs paid off in that game? 3, 4 and 6 have to be some of the most brutal calls I've ever seen, and the fact that every call was made against Iowa makes that look extremely suspicious.
The coordinator of the CUSA refs admitted that 5 calls were under review. He specifically cited the onside kick penalty. 1)The rule at the time of this game was if the receiver was in bounds, catches the ball in the air, and the defender pushes him out of bounds, he would be called in bounds. 2)Roughing the kicker - first off, the ref called "running into the kicker" not "roughing" the former is a 5 yard penalty the latter is a 15 yarder. The kicker landed on the defender, not a penalty.
On the very first call, I’m not sure there is a force-out rule in college as there is in the pros (The reasoning being that you only need to get 1 foot in); but part of his body landed inbounds anyway so it was a catch.
Just to clarify on #1...at the time this game was played, if a receiver is to have caught the ball and is forced out while in the air, it is a reception. He clearly would have come down 2 yards in bounds. And he maintained possesion throughout...no he did not drop it chmoski. Later on they did away with the force out rule. These were Conference USA officials who either didn't play with the same rules as the rest of the country or the fix was in.
The dead giveaway was the sideline warning call. That was a set-up if they needed to call it later in the game, it would have actually cost Iowa yards.
What's sad is that Iowa got totally jipped and they still almost came back and tied the game. I wonder what Myer was thinking that whole game. I can't even imagine what it would have been like to be an Iowa fan during this game.
The calls in this game are so bad it's actually laughable. You know it's bad when the announcers, who are supposed to be objectionable to everything, are discussing it and going "WTF? Are you serious?"
Remember watching this game when I was 12 years old. One of the saddest days of my young life being a lifelong hawks fan. When they called that offside on the kickoff, that almost hurt as much as Bartman interfering with Alou in the 03' NLCS. No lie, I thought they were gonna tie it. Woulda had the ball of Florida's 48 with 1:22 left.. Tate coulda got in in for sure. :( oh well..

I'm a Gator fan and even I think these were bad calls (especially the "facemask" call). I was even at that game and couldn't believe the ref's bias toward us.
I was pretty young during this game but if i remember right, there were newspapers and articles with the headline of "Florida's 12th man." my mom was RAGING at the tv
What they need to do is "hold" the official's pay for the game until the NCAA has reviewed the game they officiated. If they don't pass, they don't get paid for that game. No hotel reimbursement, car rental, nothing! Its not rocket science. That would be a sure way to keep them honest and from tilting odds on games when there's so much money involved. There is no way they would have passed with this game! Of course....the NCAA was probably the people telling the officials how to call the game anyway.
FYI - there is no push out rule in college football when catching a pass near the sideline, and it looks like (to me) that the Iowa players helmet is breaking the plane on that onside kick
How many unreal calls go against one team before someone seeing this that Iowa was robbed bad Check out Face Mask and Onside kick at end despite it Iowa came all the way back and had a chance to win Even Chris Spielma said it was unreal and he is no fan of Iowa
Estel Walker shit anyone with a brain knew that this game was terribly officiated. That penalty with facemask to facemask was gonna be called regardless due to somewhat of a late hit, but that facemask penalty on Iowa's WR Solomon?? Ohh boy WTF was that?? Yep someone got rich that day..
Man I never watched this game. Some of the worst calls I have ever seen. 12 men on the field?? Come on ref, WTF? I hate it went the Ref controls the outcome of a game. Damn Florida refs
This makes me seethe with rage to this day. I will never rout for Florida or Urban Meyer under any circumstances for the rest of my life because of this game. And I still don't know what happened to these refs after this scam.
To those wondering if these officials were fired, they were. I believe 6 lost their jobs. I know wikipedia as well as another sports news site stated they did.
I remember getting up on New Years Day and turning this game on. I saw everyone of these bad calls but kept wondering if they really were or were things just that close! They really that bad and I remember the Iowa fans looked they were ready to storm the field and tackle the refs. I've never seen fans anywhere that upset and rightly so. Recall that Iowa had completely demolished Florida the year before so you had to wonder if the refs were trying like hell to allow the Gators vengeance. In any case this game was the worst anybody had ever seen as far as officiating went. I think even Florida's fans were stunned.
Referee union trying to explain away the calls: Call #1: "He landed out of bounds, it's incomplete, you don't know where he would have landed if he'd come down." Call #2: "There are too many players to see, so obviously the ref made the right call". Call #3: "Concussions are a big problem in football, that's why the helmet-to-helmet rule is in place." Call #4: "Grow up you baby." Call #5: "Oh he got the first down without the penalty, the fact that you complain about the missed call means you're just trying to find calls you don't like." Call #6: "Mark Emerrrrrrt! They're abusing the officials!" Listen, I'm one of the first people who gets mad when someone disrespects the ref for a tough call, they're (usually) doing the best they can. But it's not a one-way street. The flip side is that there's gotta be some official accountability.
Willie Boyd did you even watch the damn video? The ONLY questionable call was the catch out of bounds. Id say 50/50 he gets his foot down if not carried out. But the REST OF THIS LIST YOU HAVE IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Say what you will someone got paid !
I think all three of you are confused... these calls were ALL terrible (as New Username said, MAYBE the first call, the out-of-bounds one, has a point). The refs messed them up. The defending comments (e.g. "There are too many players to see, so obviously the ref made the right call") do not reflect how I see it, they're meant to mock the calls (which is why I put them in quotation marks)
Just to clear up the push rule... The NFL had a push out rule, the NCAA never did. The NCAA has a carry out rule. This rule is only applied when a player catches the ball in the air and is "obviously held before being carried in any direction". the play in question is clearly a push and was ruled correctly by the ref.
Was there an investigation into this absolute atrocity?! I don't even remember hearing anything about this and the evidence is overwhelming that, at the very least, something's not right with all the bad calls, blatantly bad calls, going against only the 1 team!
I like how the announcers just keep getting more and more pissed off.

There was another call missed when Dallas Baker went out of bounds and then came back in to catch a touchdown and put Flordia up 24-7.
Truly disgusting I'm an SEC fan but this is highway robbery I remember this game couldn't believe my eyes and ears I heard that this game has been analyzed by hundreds of different referees committee members and so on and such forth truly unbelievable game clearly these guys hated Iowa in the Big ten but like I said on another comment Terry these guys are just like you and me they have their favorite teams and they have their teams that they can't stand it goes that way in all sports they are all referees and umpires are supposed to take an oath of non-partisanship but it doesn't work that way all the time it's the same way with announcers of games but just remember like I just said the umpires the referees they have their favorite teams and the teams they don't like or can't stand the most unbelievably bad called game in the history of not just college football of all sports combined
Another Meyer team getting the win because of horrible calls
ruben contreras Go ahead and give one more example you dumb fuck lmao
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?" I'd be pissed to if I was the announcer, watched an absolutely terrible officiating game
I'm willing to venture refs had money on the game or were getting paid.
They admitted it too. After this game the NCAA put 5 calls under review
The first call could go either way,but every call after that tells me someone was getting paid.
so many bad calls in the same game? At Florida...not surprising.
This makes you think someone was getting a payday...That is outrageous
I almost threw my TV out the window for this game
I'm a sec fan but that couldn't have been anymore rigged
i love how even the announcer's are upset.
Iowa got revenge on Urban Meyer 55-24 in 2017.
Wow.. I'm not a fan of either of these teams but you went up and above to prove your point...
that was some of the worst football calls I've ever seen
I remember getting up on New Years Day and turning this game on. I saw everyone of these bad calls but kept wondering if they really were or were things just that close! They really that bad and I remember the Iowa fans looked they were ready to storm the field and tackle the refs. I've never seen fans anywhere that upset and rightly so. Recall that Iowa had completely demolished Florida the year before so you had to wonder if the refs were trying like hell to allow the Gators vengeance. In any case this game was the worst anybody had ever seen as far as officiating went. I think even Florida's fans were stunned.
All refs in this game needed to be fired
Referee union trying to explain away the calls:
Call #1: "He landed out of bounds, it's incomplete, you don't know where he would have landed if he'd come down."
Call #2: "There are too many players to see, so obviously the ref made the right call".
Call #3: "Concussions are a big problem in football, that's why the helmet-to-helmet rule is in place."
Call #4: "Grow up you baby."
Call #5: "Oh he got the first down without the penalty, the fact that you complain about the missed call means you're just trying to find calls you don't like."
Call #6: "Mark Emerrrrrrt! They're abusing the officials!"
Listen, I'm one of the first people who gets mad when someone disrespects the ref for a tough call, they're (usually) doing the best they can. But it's not a one-way street. The flip side is that there's gotta be some official accountability.
You are a dipshit.. Wow
You can say grow up all you want but the face mask penalty was a horrible, unacceptable call.
And this is why the Big Ten is tired of having to play the SEC in bowl games in the South. Ridiculous
