Rebecca Heinemann is just awesome. She single-handedly did a Doom port in a stupid amount of time and she only failed because they studio leader was an idiot, and now I find out SHE MADE A HALF LIFE PORT? This lady is just amazing!

Good video but you left out one major part... Valve DID eventually bring Half Life not only to Mac, but also to Linux. Valve has invested a lot into achieving parity between Mac, Linux, and Windows for all of their games.
Fair point, though I was mostly trying to keep this to new information. Not to detract from Valve porting their library to other platforms, because it's a very good thing, but porting to Intel-based Macs is a lot less complicated than porting to PowerPC based Macs. PowerPC is a whole other architecture on top of the OS difference. The main reason we saw Mac gaming get a lot more "even" (in terms of ports) in the 2010s was the transition from PPC to Intel in 2005ish making it a *lot* easier. Valve releasing Steam for OS X was just the push it needed.
Valve's macOS ports were very short lived when it came to updates, having never made the transition to 64-bit at all, and even since then, Valve has never released a 64-bit only version of Steam ever, not sure why but maybe it's an enterprise related problem to Valve to keep the 64-bit version of Steam in Development Hell forever. Even then though, Valve itself is not an enterprise company. And the only 64-bit version of Steam that was released is on macOS, the 64-bit Windows & Linux versions of Steam still remains in development hell pretty much forever.
let me know when steam doesn't want i386 architecture added and i don't have to add non-free repos. Steam on Linux is more half baked than smoking shit weed
I had to stop the video a few times to read the text from the postings and the quotes. It was really hard to read text with someone talking a different sentence overtop, and the text was not shown on screen long enough to read it all several times. Great video, though. I had no idea about the Mac port.

When you said they were told to destruct the code, I literally gripped my chest in pain... so much work went into it and it probably isn't ever going to get archived.
Wow. Half-Life is my favourite game of all time, and only now do I hear this story. It's actually really sad. I feel so bad for the studio and especially the lady. Having so much work just thrown out the window must be excruciating.

It's not really THAT tough a port. Big endian transition could make map data incompatible and network data, or it could be made to work, but of course a lot of cleanup of the underlying engineering would be necessary. Of course it's not entirely unfair to call HL on Windows-PC a mess because of general software quality issues on the one hand, and immature graphics accelerator support on the other, with Direct3D, OpenGL and Voodoo Glide as competing standards which all had to be supported, and variously broken drivers for each GPU in particular - but OpenGL was fairly robust on a mac back then already. I remember Bungie's Oni ran fine.
Did the powerpc build of this ever get leaked? I've been digging about forever for even a scrap of information on this. This really needs to get out into the public domain.
I think I know what you were going for with the game-play section, where it was louder and more prominent and all. But (and this is a personal comment) I think it might be better if you kept it more in line with the general volume of the rest of the video. I usually use my computer with speakers and not headphones and that game-play section had me racing for the volume knob.

Well dang, I was just repurposing 2 1994 Mac's with the hopes of playing HL1 😕 what a shame, hopefully someone creates some kind of a homebrew port one day
Of course today you can just install Windows 10 for free on any Mac (if you don't mind a little watermark) and play just about any PC game you want if your Mac is powerful enough
I own the Mac port on Steam. Its not an actual port, but a conversion of goldsrc into Mac OS X. Valve did it with a bunch of other old games too (CS 1.6, Day of Defeat) Pretty much runs the same as normal half life but with less support.
The original version of Half Life has never been ported to Mac, the version you can buy on steam today is the Source engine version of HL 1 not the 98 code that this port was a version of
Man, mac gamers really got stiffed in the early 2000’s. They got stiffed out of this HL port, and they also lost Halo to Microsoft. Must have been heart breaking for mac gamers.
Apple's exagerated claims didn't helped, but even then, a bunch of platforms that were still performing well just didn't survived, with the MacIntosh (and Sega Dreamcast) among them.

Yeah, I suppose "purposefully" is probably not entirely accurate here. However I think many people actually did not see the "I" as an "l" and thus thought it's a 3. You could have prevented it, and who knows, maybe you even specifically chose that word (there are people smart enough to think about this, and I can imagine, you are as well). I'm not bashing you for doing it, I'm just pointing out, it will definitely confuse people.

Yes, it was later ported to Intel-based Macs, but that port has nothing to do with this one. This one was pre-Intel.

Colly This ain’t the same. Mac’s back then were a LOT different compared to the ones we have now, mainly due to architecture and PowerPC/Intel stuff.
