    Those Stalingrad missions near the beginning are some of my fondest early gaming memories. I remember getting killed by the gigantic rolling smokestack in the first level over and over until I realized what "crouch" was. I remember the epic Soviet choir music as you charge the machine gun nest in the railyard. I remember thinking that the sniper defense level in the factory was literally impossible, and remember how awe-struck I was when I finally got to drive the tank afterwards.
    The music still holds up today , too. Thanks for the memories, Kacey.

    I had Finest Hour at launch on Xbox, I really liked enjoyed it, the gameplay felt far closer to Call of Duty 2 onwards than the PC Call of Duty, which feels like a clunky open map objective based '90s PC FPS in hindsight. But the Xbox 360 and definitely PS3 weren't out yet, infact the PS3 was so late, they skipped COD2 on it entirely.

      I never felt the ps3 was late. The wii didn't felt like a new next gen and microsoft wanted to be before sony. I mean, the 360 had serious problems because of this in the first renditions. About cod itself, you are totally right.

      so instead of bad PC ports

    I love COD Finest Hour. I just want to touch on what you had said about The Sims for console. I remember back in 2001-2002 looking through Game Informer magazine just hoping The Sims would come to console. I never had a PC growing up and could never play The Sims even though I loved the concept. Finally, it happened The Sims for consoles and then Bustin' Out the next year. I loved those games! Still love them even to this very day. I actually have been playing Bustin Out on the original Xbox. I understand the PC version was better but this was all I had. If I'm honest the games were pretty good. I love the story mode in both games even though i will admit I never completed the first Sims on PS2 because of the insane difficulty.

    This was always my favourite Call of Duty campaign, played for the first time ~2015. The higher time to kill, more head-on combat, + effective hip firing better suited my taste than the plucking away at heads in cover of the main series.
    The multiplayer was alright, but there was some pretty inconsistent map design and poor weapon balancing. Big Red One was my perfect COD multiplayer.
    Enjoyed the video, keep it up.

I actually remember spending an entire 4th of July Weekend in 2010 playing the Half-Life to death on PS2. While my classmates were talking about GTA IV and Gears of War, I was stuck playing GTA San Andreas every night, and that was some of the most memorable nights I had.

I've played many more fps games over the years on pc both old and new that are definitely better in some aspects or other (especially technical) , but I seem to have bad luck in having my nostalgia be so many console exclusives. This is still my favorate CoD game. I agree the controls are not as fluid as I'd like, but otherwise it is nothing short of a masterpiece IMO! I loved the health system in this game, where you could collect and carry health packs with you for later use. Machine guns also felt truly dangerous (doubly so because there was no regeneratimg health), meaming were constantly peaking around corners, not wanting to be in their sights. When you found one. you were basically forced to try and rechache grenades/flank them, or _anything_ you could to avoid taking them head on, as that was usually suicide. Also liked how you had to breach doors yourself and lead the troops, modern CoD games basicly involve following an AI 90% of the time. And then there's that final level where you have to fight across the bridge, with that amazing musical score, and the other side shrouded in fog... Top 10 gaming memories right there!

    For me this is completly underrated game even if it feels almost nothing like other CoD games, or even Medal of Honor. I love it's almost tactical aproach, actually varied missions, much less scripted levels, best tank levels in the series, and it's rich atmosphere. Controls are good for the speed and pacing of the game. For me this along CoD 2 Big Red One, CoD 3 and CoD United Offensive are the best pretenders for the best single player CoD games (regarding post MW 2007 games, i would say Ghosts had the best campaign followed by either Black Ops 2 or Advanced Warfare, but i just prefer less scripted games pre MW).
    I really don't agree with the idea that for example mg nests are unfair in north africa campaign. This is what i meant when saying it's more tactical - you need to use level design, to plan your moves, to use proper weapons, the thing is this is meant to pose a challange. Or for example later on in american campaign there is this awesome concept of using the tank you are meant to protect from panzer granadiers, as a cover from small firearms. Or how much of a difference you see when using Thompson (great for close quaters), and BAR (great for mid to long range especialy when in prone). You just don't play it as other cods, you have to look for cover, prioritize enemies, clear rooms, use prone for accuracy, plan you route to objectives. The bridge in last mission would be a piece of cake walk in any other cod, here it's a challenge that you have to divide into smaller pieces, and change your tactics acordingly - like firstly using BAR prone to deal with germans that run to more secure positions, methodicaly move closer to them, and then change to thompson to finish them of in close quater. It's makes this level memorable, when it could have just been another run and gun affair.

    Call of Duty: Combined Forces was a proposed concept draft originally intended to be a sequel to Call of Duty: Finest Hour. However, due to multiple legal issues that arose between Spark Unlimited, Electronic Arts, and Activision as well as other production problems, the game's draft and scripts never came to be. The game was projected to cost $10.5 million to produce after Finest Hour was complete. Eventually, Activision deemed the pitch as more of an expansion than something entirely new, causing the company to reject the proposal and end their contract with Spark Unlimited shortly after.

  • @dani1o25
    @dani1o25 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Finished it on hard today just for CoD series completionism. Sorry for everyone who has nostalgia feelings about this game, but it sucks. The controls and hitreg feels so awkward, recoil is so damn ridiculous that the game is not about reaction and aim, but about learning map and enemy spawns to prefire everyone. If you don't expect someone - you're dead. And awful checkpoint system doesn't make things better.
    It's hardcore af, but not in a good, challenging way. It's just poorly designed, that's it. I feel bad for console players, who got this instead of the amazing original CoD1, which is really fun to play even today.

  • @johnnysparkle
    @johnnysparkle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The development of Call of Duty Finest Hour proved to be problematic on multiple fronts: Even before production started, developer Spark Unlimited became embroilled in a nasty lawsuit with Electronic Arts: the company's founders had worked on the Medal of Honor series and poached many of the staff behind Medal of Honor: Frontline, causing EA to retaliate by accusing (not baselessly) the exilees of having stolen ressources and helped Spark Unlimited on company time. The development itself also had its share of troubles: despite Activision insisting otherwise, the developers decided to use Renderware for the game, which caused many problems down the line as it was incompatible with Spark's custom object database, becoming increasingly slow and crash-prone as development progressed. A poor tool chain made it difficult to troubleshoot bugs. Spark Unlimited's game development philosophy was also at odd with Activision: while EA's philosophy was to focus on making the levels and focus on technological polish at the end of development, Activision expected a polished core game far earlier. As the developers missed every milestone and went greatly overbudget, Activsion salvaged the game by lending a large team of internal engineers to assist development and outsource large chunks of the game and development of the Xbox and Gamecube versions. While Finest Hour ended up being a financial success, lack of faith in Spark's management and an underwhelming pitch for a sequel caused Activision to end their contract with Spark Unlimited, spawning another lawsuit as Spark felt the company was trying to weasel out of the agreed royalties.

The last I remember even seeing was World at War. Any experience I’ve had on my XBOX was an authentic new experience for me as my mindset is so 2000s and hasn’t really evolved beyond that. Finest hour was the hardest call of duty game I’ve played, and the only problem is that there’s barely any health packs, it’s too dark( even though I tried to adjust the TV’s brightness and backlight), and the friendly AI’s keep blocking you’re path, but other than that it’s still a good call of duty game.

For it's time it wasn't bad, wasn't quite as good as the PC version but it still held up compared to other PS2 shooters at the time. The problem it had was being overshadowed by Call of Duty 2 on PC and Xbox a year later.

    Would you be willing to do a review of the Ace Combat series? I grew up with “the holy trinity” and I’d love to see your take on it. If you want something truly unique, I highly recommend taking a look at Ace Combat X, a PSP exclusive that I would argue is a hidden gem of a game

    This game crashed while I was playing it on Xbox. Its the only game that I have played on 6 gen that have done that. And the shooting feels like garbage, it feels like shooting at air and if it werent for the hit markers I wouldnt have known that I was hitting anything at all. I think that Call Of Duty 2 Big Red One is far superior and it actually feels like a true classic COD game.

    I'll be honest and that is i just don't like this game, big red one is my favorite out of the classic 3 on consoles but this game has such a brutal difficulty, bad controls, terrible visuals even for the platform and more wrong with it, i never had this game back in the day (i started with big red one) but even if i did i would have stuck with medal of honor in all ways but multiplayer.

    Any issues you had with control responsiveness or performance were because you unfortunately played this on PS2. I love that console, but it really did not handle shooters well, hence of relative lack of good ones on it. If you want the best experience with this that plays really well and responsively, play it on the original Xbox.

    I have this game for Xbox and the clunky controls exist there too. Despite that I still enjoyed it. I didn't play it as a kid. I picked it up recently from a thrift store along with Big Red One. Its interesting to play old games you have zero nostalgia for yet can still enjoy and understand the sentiments for them. Not the best but a very important stepping stone.

    pretty good game. yeah its clunky as hell even if you could play on mouse but they made something that was fun. the multiplayer and levels in mp were pretty good. village was honestly one of my favourite maps of any game but i wonder how well it would play outside of finest hour. i thought it was better then big red one. yeah big red one felt more technically competent, but finest hour was more fun. though big red one was still good
    socom was obviously the number 1 online shooter for sony back in the day but i wouldnt be suprised if finest hour was in the top 10 most played online

  • @TheSonic497

    This game is just not fun at all past Regular difficulty. It's as if the developers designed the campaign in mind with just Regular difficulty in mind, but decided to make the harder difficulties to just take more damage while nothing else changes.

    • @innoclarke7435
      @innoclarke7435 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tbh, the moment you hit the American campaign, it's not fun at all on Regular either. A problem made worse considering I just went through the game the other day on Xbox, which technically looks a little nicer, but the game is darker, with dark grey areas made pitch black. There's legitimately sections of the game so dark that, with maxed monitor brightness, I cannot see literally anything whatsoever. All of this wouldn't be so bad if the checkpoints weren't so fucked. One or two checkpoints a mission just don't cut it. I ended up going through the American campaign as a pace slower than playing SWAT 4. In a Call of Duty game, that's a problem.
      Prior to that, the game was pretty solid though, gotta admit.

    Your epilogue about the value and wonderment of downgraded ports hits home. It's been a small tradition of mine to willingly try out inferior ports just because I'm enough of a tech nerd that it's legit fascinating to see what the dev teams could pull off with the inferior hardware. I bought the ps3 version of Black Ops 3 last year but couldn't even play it because it requires a mandatory 4gb patch to even allow you past the title screen lol. I've got wifi now so im gonna download it and see just how abysmal it is.

      @Kaceydotme  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sonder006 This video was around 900mb exported in 1080/60. Sounds small in comparison, because 1. I export in a lower bitrate than I capture in because TH-cam caps it anyway, and there isn't much point in exporting at mega bitrate when the game was 480p upscaled to 720p 2. for this ten minute video i captured 10 hours of footage of Finest Hour, plus clips from other games (Some of which are admittedly stuff I've just had laying around on the drive, some of which are captured fresh during editing)
      This video is on the shorter side and the project folder (only the trimmed clips, copies of images and music used, etc) was 10gb. Something like Ford Racing which used a *lot* more footage ended up being 40gb in the project folder, and as I move projects back and forth between my desktop and laptop as necessary, I make copies of the project each time I do this in case something gets messed up between machines (bad export, corruption, or i just decide I want to go back to an earlier state of the video) this adds up. Ford Racing was 250gb of raw footage just from those games.
