undercover actually started development as carbon in 2004 before being changed and then left in limbo until sometime after carbons release but before prostreets release. each game was already on a 2 year dev cycle due to multiple teams at blackbox. prostreet on the ps2 was an actual port of the new engine onto the ps2 which was an amazing feat although really showed the consoles age. undercover on the ps2 is actually just a reskinned carbon to the point that you can use carbons executable with the files of undercover and get to the main menu before you crash due to non existant cars in the database file.
you also miss out the fact that ug2 assets were also used in the world :p
also carbon on the wii actually had the highest resolution road textures out of all of the versions but lacked any form of specular / normals.
I actually cut out the mention of some UG2 assets (specifically signs) for flow/length reasons, but yea, there's some of that going on. Didn't know UC's concept started as carbon but UC as it came out was early 2007. It's pretty awesome that people have dug deep enough to find the rest of that out, pretty neat. I'm excited to try out the Wii version.

Not enough time does not explain why you would possibly give other cars such a huge enormous advantage like in the scene where the cars try to kill Carmen that he was talking about at 16:00.
@@melody3741 A lack of development time can also mean a lack of time for game testing. I think that would perfectly explain why Carmen's pursuers are unbalanced, because if someone had time to playtest that mission and enough time to fix it, then I'd say it would be likely that the rest of the game would have more polish as well.

Even when watching this now, i still feel like "Meh" because i actually enjoyed playing that unfinished garbage, i loved the soundtracks, the cars and even the story too much to give a damn. XD
Not gonna lie, undercover on PS2 was amazing and one of the best moments of my childhood, looks unfinished sure but I don't think it's that bad, I played the shit out of it, but well, that might just be nostalgia speaking

KP-48 The Version on the PS2 In undercover is unfinished it looks like Carbon.
Part of the fun of this game was how absurd it was. For instance, crashing into a random car that's slowly going up a hill (just as it's nearing the top) will send it flying forever. Also, I remember there being a weird memory leak in the game: you go into quick race mode split-screen, restart the race 10 or so times, and each restart, it lags more and more, until eventually you're playing at 1 fps. Having said that, I loved how specific the customizations could be with autosculpt or whatever it was. And the long stretches of highway between the islands were fun to speed around with the koenigsegg and zonda.

Its not fun when i play the "save carmen" mission and she dies instantly since the enemy ai decides to rubberband to her at lightspeed. But there are plenty of funny glitches and good exploits.
I found an exploit to guarantee a way to escape the cops by using the bridge (the one from the end of MW) and jump across it and wait out the evade bar to fill up since 99% of the time the cops cannot cross over. Only the chopper can follow you but the chopper is on a timer so yeah.
As for the save carmen mission you can end the outrun race in the tunnel area and the enemy ai will glitch out in a numerous of ways, some very helpful and others softlock you.

The fact that enemy cars you had to take down were stock and pink colored made me think that not even developers took this game seriously, but I gotta say that the gameplay wasnt that bad

What the? Prostreet was THAT badly received by critics? That’s insane. I thought it was a brilliant game, especially after you gave it a couple hours to get used to it.
I remember that if you went to TH-cam in 2009 or 2010, everyone would just be shitting over Pro Street, but now, everyone somehow loves it.
It was mostly hated back then because it wasn't like underground, most wanted, and carbon myself included but now that I'm older I realized that the developers were probably getting tired of doing the same thing every year and wanted something different
Back then it was blasted for being different. Now it's pretty much beloved for being unique, and most of the criticism these days lies with the low difficulty and bugged DLC vehicles (which are both easy to fix on PC).
It's not come out in a right time, nfs are really well known as open world game back in ps2 era
ProStreet looked mediocre (awful smoke!) and it lacked any NFS feel, being a wannabe simcade. I remeber it being pretty much unplayable on keyboard.

Nostalgic, i spent too many hours in that game on my dear ps2.
I remember playing the game when I was younger. This version specifically. The only memory that I have of it is just having a 30 minute police chase at heat 5 and four flat tires.
Same, this is the very first need for speed game I've ever played as a kid i got my first copy as a christmas gift from my dad and then after that copy stoped working i had to buy another one at my local Wal-Mart to try out my repaired ps2 that i also got as a christmas gift once we tried the game my repaired ps2 had some trouble reading the game and the game was brand new off the shelf but unfortunately we had to return it so now that i have a smartphone and some money i ordered my self another copy of nfs undercover and dispite some of the technical issues it has its still a fun game to play im currently driving my modded nissan 350z against exotics and let tell you it can wipe the floor with them sorry if this was too long lol just wanted to share my history with this game👍

Some of the assets from the main port of NFS Undercover were "borrowed" from Burnout Paradise, such as the traffic cars for example, and the texture details of the traffic cars are the same as Underground 2.

…Yeah, in all honesty you'll need the Dominator Corvette Z06 and/or the Speed Machine 911 GT2 in versions 1.0.1.18 and 1.1.2.1 (the latter is only in the Origin version). And the Boss Car Bundle is unavailable now unless you play the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions.

As a child I've spent many hours playing NFS: Undercover on PS2 and I must admit, it was one of the best games of NFS franchise. Most Wanted, Carbon, ProStreet and Undercover are the best ones I'll never forget.

This is my favorite version of the game. I was actually emulating the Wii version and reached the Carmen part and could not get passed it for no reason other then Carmen not moving and getting herself killed. I played the PS2 version at launch and I don't recall struggling at that part at all... in any case, I share the same sentiment that I enjoyed the PS2/Wii versions over the next generation version.

@@genkia87 well I downloaded Undercover on my Laptop With Windows 10 and I also downloaded PCSX2 Emulator to emulate the PS2 Version of NFS Undercover, so basically I have both of my Favorite Versions of Undercover on my Laptop.
I remember feeling betrayed and being sad after discovering online in 2008 how much better and different the "main" version of undercover was compared to my ps2 version. Still loved the game and played the hell out of it. For whatever reason I never encountered the bugs you listed or I just don't remember.

Due to financial stresses of modern (for that time) game development budgets any outsourced version would not get a roasting by the IP owner and initiator of the outsourced development. Need for Speed : Most Wanted on the PS2 shows what it should have been like, Carbon is not bad too but as it takes place during night scenes only it is easier to get away with lower spec hardware. Whoever did NFS Undercover for PS2 certainly did not hit that Most Wanted level of quality, in both senses of the phrase!
I have never seen a video on your channel, and don’t know much about Need for Speed, but this was in my recommendations. I liked it.

Man... this brings back a strange memory. I remember discussing this game before launch on some message board, and there was one fine fellow there who had some bizarre ideas. He argued that the ps2 had some kind of untapped power which would keep it viable long into the 7th generation (I assume until the ps3's untapped power could finally be uh, tapped). He went on these long technobabble rants about the Emotion Engine along with some kind of special chip in the ps2 that could allow it to run DX10 level graphics, only restricted to 1080i. He claimed that this version of the game would be nearly identical to the ps3 version and that he had inside knowledge of many more ports of newer games that were in the works for the older console, such as FF13. He said that developers had only used up to 1/4 of it's true power as Sony had put limits on it or some kind of jazz. I wonder what happened to that guy... I just went down a rabbit hole of old forums I used to haunt trying to find that thread with no luck. I'd love to have seen his reaction to the final product. He'd probably chalk it up to that old classic line: "lazy devs" lol.
I can almost guarantee that it was some kid who only had a ps2 and he wanted it to stay relevant so badly that he talked himself into believing this stuff. I bet once he finally got a ps3 he said the same things about the Cell long after the 8th gen consoles were in most homes. Actually I knew a few people who evangelized the holy Cell and all of it's miraculous feats, so he wouldn't have been alone there.

I found that on the Wii version, on some tracks you could drive faster than the game loads the map, which leads to you driving into nowhere...
Also, it was very easy to crash the game (reproducibly!).
I thought I'd love this game, but I too bought the PS2 version... Only remember I did, just because I saw the thumbnail for this. Also, "The Mark Has Been Made" is a great NIN song, great choice there...

3:00 The Sims 3 DS port that Exient made is also worth praising, it's pretty impressive for a system and it also has an open-world (even the 3DS version lacks the open-world component).
I legit loved both versions of the game when I was a kid. But now you pointed out the obvious flaws in the game which I was blindly in love with, I kinda feel stupid and a bit torn. I feel like a very tiny, insignificant part of my gaming life is shredded away.
Anyways, I totally agree with you 100% and openly accept the criticism and judgment that you offer. Thanks for reminding what the game WAS for me back in the day as well as putting things a little bit in perspective, when you see it TODAY. It’s kinda funny though.

The first review I can agree with. You listed all the good and bad stuff about the game, although I have to say some things never happened to me, like Chase bugging out and that stuff and I never had a problem escaping the police. Very good review, not complaining about stuff that happened to you during a playthrough that never happened to anyone else, like most other reviews. I have to say I prefer the PS2 version over the new PC version. Thank you for the probably only REAL review of this game!
