I really appreciate your tips, tricks, and great advice. I just purchased a C80, but have two R5s as well. I have found many of your tips are transferable across different cameras. Thanks so much, I subbed. 😊
I just picked up an R5 to pair with my R6. So much awesome information here. I am definitely using the multi function switch to flip over the video. Thanks for this
This was one of the most useful videos for the r5 I’ve ever seen. I wish you did more photography videos - because your video focused r5 videos are amazing.
Love your work! Keep it going! I love the mfn button to switch between video and photo. It's even better than when it was a dial back in the old days. As for most video, I do shoot in 4k cropped mode so I get that supersampled 4k which never overheats. It makes everything carefree. But I'll definitely try out that standby low res bc I would love to use 4khq mode more often. However when I get the r5c, it'll all be a moot point. My r5 will be my main photo camera and secondary video cam while the r5c becomes my main video camera and secondary photo cam (great for events where you need both photo and video of the best once ever moments).
Hi Deaf, nice video like always👍. The bad thing is that I guess there is probably nothing else hidden what we can discover on the R5 😉. I hope somewhen with a firmware Canon will allow also 5K 60fps internal RAW recording. The main thing I discovered just 3 weeks ago (where I think that everyone else knew that and I was just using it wrong) is that when I record my face with eye-AF and letting the R5 select automaticly my eyes, then the AF was switching uncontrolled from one eye to the other depending on how I was moving my face. I did not realized the difference between single line and double line selected motives. So I didn't knew that with one press on the joystick or one displayclick on one specific eye it would lock the selected eye and then the selection line becomes doublelined and my specific eye is locked in this video for the AF. Since I know that, this is a smal game changer to keep the focus much better there where I want it and to allways try to get double lines on the selection. I had accepted that I wasn't so happy with the switching AF and I got surprised that I just was using it in a stupid way since it came out.
Standby LoRes will affect the quality through the HDMI. Once you hit record internally the signal, through the HDMI will go to full res, but if you don't record internally the HDMI will not know when to switch the signal. Have a great day!
@@DeafDirector so then low res really doesn’t help with the over heating if i am trying to record 4K 60fps on the r6 to the ninja. So if I’m in 4K 60 and have low res on. Do you know what it scales down to once I hit record on the ninja??
@@dustmicks1 If you are recording to the ninja and not internally, I have a hack that will let you record almost infinitely and is better than Standby: Low res. Check this video out: th-cam.com/video/IM3ulAK5f8k/w-d-xo.html
Happy 4th of July, DD! So I ran into some serious overheating yesterday while shooting 4k60 Pro Res. Great tip on reducing the RVF and LCD time! I’m also assuming the problem was caused by simultaneous recording on the Ninja V+ and R5. Probably a dumb question, but how do I set 4k60 ProRes without simultaneously recording?
Hey, does Standby Low Res work on an Atomos Ninja V, or is it 'disregarded' by the camera at that point, and would it even be necessary given that you're avoiding the heat issue anyway, like say... would it save battery life though it's unnecessary? You can use the Multi Function button to switch to video, but you can also just hit the video record button (the red one) to automatically switch from photo to video and start immediately filming in the last video format you shot in! Another great insights vid, dude! Your videos are so helpful!
Thanks. Kai. I am a guy who is constantly running away from my camera on set to adjust lights, fix props, talk to actors, etc. so the Standby Low Res really makes a difference for me, even with a Ninja. One word of caution for Standby Low Res, is that it is optimized for internal recording. That means if you are recording to both internal and the Atomos, when you hit record the signal will go back to the high resolution. However, if you are just recording external, do not enable Standby Low Res, because the camera will not switch out of the lower res. I did a video on this, showing the results, that might be helpful for you. th-cam.com/video/wde1cR1mkz4/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Thanks for the tips and for putting out great content. Coming from the GH5 one of the first things that I did was to program the mfn button to switch between modes. I was in disbelief that Canon would have you go through multi steps to change modes. All is well now!
I’m gonna have to check if my cameras is on standby low res mode, yet I haven’t experienced over heating these days 😂 Looking back, these hidden jam features to prevent overheating is something Canon should’ve done it in firsthand. Whether to lock certain options and unlock with prompt such as ‘this will cause overheat shutdown’ Anyways I wanted to add one more underrated custom button. Its DOF button in front, set it to switch between focus modes, it’s super handy in my uses!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a bit confused with the explanation around the dual native iso. Are you saying that when exposing the image at a high iso, for instance 2500, that the noise will dramatically drop if you push it higher to 3200? Or is there a setting we need to toggle on? Sorry if I missed this.
Thanks so much for the comment. I actually made another video detailing the dual ISO in much greater detail that should demonstrate it better for you. th-cam.com/video/SG8Pg6nUaKo/w-d-xo.html. Have a great day!
LOVE the mf button video switch hack!!! Thank you!!! I was wishing they had this feature for one of the buttons and checked for the asterisks to find it was unavailable but hadn't checked mf. You are a life saver!! THANK YOU!! Curious, what do you use your mf button for?
I love the hack, but I end up using my mfn button as a quick access control to WB, and Drive functions, which I access all the time. I wish we could access the video hack with a few other button options. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@DeafDirector Oh nice, yeah I can see how that would be handy for sure. That's how mine was set from factory but I always forgot to use it. Defaulted to the Q button for WB and Drive as I was used to that from previous cameras. That said, getting in the habit would be great. Just got the 24-70 RF and have set the WB to the control ring (with meter button so no accidents) Going to see how that works for my workflow and if I can get used to it. I like the idea of not having to take my eye away to change the important things and I think this will work well. Time will tell :) Thanks again for the great video, this mode selection button is game changing for my style of work.

Thank you. Nice to see you out digging into this. Should we shoot our canon videos in h.265 or h.265? Thanks!
Great Tips Deaf! 👌🏼

I do the same. Cropped mode paired with the Sigma Art 18-35 f/1.8 makes the R5 my main wedding video cam
That hidden dual native ISO is really good to know!
It really changed how I shoot on the R5. Thanks for the comment, have a great day!
Amazing tips. Thanks for putting them in one place.
Hidden gems, thank you.
The Stand by Low Res feature is gone with the 1.5.2 update is that correct?

Great stuff. Thanks. Question, doesn't the red record button on top switch you from still to video (C3) and back back to still with one press?
No it not switch you back to photo mode
Does the R5 have a BT.709 WIDE DR setting? Ijust have Clog, Clog3 and Standard in mine! I know my R5C does have BT.709 Wide DR... but not my R5.
I believe this is only available in the R5C. Have a great day!
Would you still recommend buying this camera in 2022? Or should I splash a bit more cash and wait for the r5c. I do both video and photo btw.
Both Atomos recorders are on sale atm, why do you think that is? What does the near future hold for us?
loev this vid, thanks for the tips!!!!!!
Does stand by low res give the same quality when recording to the ninja? Or does it lower the quality through the hdmi to match the lcd screen.
