Match Fixing: How Man Utd & Liverpool reshaped the Football League

- It's easy to become disillusioned with what's become of the beautiful game, it feels increasingly more like business and politics drive the sport than when it did when you were younger. It was all so much simpler then ... right ... right?
Dive into a pivotal moment in football history, as we explore the controversial Good Friday match-fixing scandal of 1915, and the subsequent expansion of the English Football League in 1919 - a decision that echoes through the sport to this day. This episode not only highlights the scandal involving Manchester United and Liverpool, but also covers the dramatic changes in league structure that allowed Arsenal to rise in an unexpected way, and add fuel to the fire in their burgeoning rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur
Discover how war, scandal, and (juiciest of all) potential corruption influenced the game during it's formative years. Whether you're a Tottenham fan feeling the sting of historical decisions, or a neutral curious about some of the origins of the sport, this deep dive into football history is packed with intrigue and awful metaphors.

Dude I cannot understand how a channel like this pops up and makes such high quality content so quickly. Nice work man.
He just began?
@@adrianirimescu988 this sort of content takes time and effort(and money to do) the fact that this channel just came up with this level of content is amazing. usually it takes a long time for people to hone their craft.
This channel is the true successor to Tifo.
tifo is way worse than this channel, they’re always going on about proto-tactical bullshit
@@lucastanciu2567 They never use to be. They use to be like this until they found success with sensible transfers
@@lucastanciu2567OG tifo is what this basically is.
@@lucastanciu2567what you call 'proto tactical bs' is what most of us call 'tactics'. learning about those, makes you more knowledgeable about the game. hope this helps!
I can't stand you
Liverpool players colluding with united, everton winning the league… times were grim
Also the war thing
Because of the war
Still not as grim as having Karl Marx as your profile image though
Seems like match fixing was a major problem across many sports in the 1910s and 1920s. 1919 is when the infamous Black Sox scandal happened in baseball. Back then, professional athletes made decent money, but certainly not enough to pass up a fixing opportunity to make multiple years’ wages in one go.
It’s fascinating to learn about these historical events as sports leagues developed into what they are today.
Yeah same decade of the Black Sox scandal was my thought (like how Dixie Dean and Babe Ruth were both setting scoring records in the late 20s)
love the content!!! KEEP IT GOING
content feels likes Tifo when it first started, with interesting topics and great animation
and a damn good humor in storytelling
Much appreciated! TIFO produce great videos so flattered by the comparison, thanks for taking time to comment!
Hang on a minute. I'm subscribed to an Arsenal fan! Sounds like Justice for Chelsea in conclusion, Thank you very much. Keep up the fantastic work man.
So basically Arsenal have always used their history as a way to justify any of their claims, meanwhile Spurs have always whined about things not going their way when they are responsible for it?
and all the while, Chelsea is caught up in a chaotic situation, where their fate is undecided
So nothing has really changed then, even in modern football.
Yep Spurs finished 2nd in that vote😂
and Man United is a cheater
Should have been Spurs any day of the week.
Football 'eritage.
@@barbarycorsair8473And we saw the first ever St. Totteringham's Day celebration.
Great content. Hope the TH-cam algorithm does you the credit you deserve.
Much appreciated, hopefully more of the same on the way
It seems to have done, this channel was recommended to me unprompted and and I'm loving it so far!
@@RouteNone
In Rule 8 I think you left a 'p' out of 'stoppages'.
"because of the war" had me rolling the 7th time you called back to it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This really puts a dampener on Arsenals record of most consecutive seasons in the first division, which dates back to 1919
I usually keep the comment section on YT hidden and don't really comment on videos these days, but you said one thing that I absolutely didn't agree with so here I am.
At the end you said that the whole scandal was inconsequential as Spurs got promotion the next year anyways.
But what if Tottenham got promoted and Arsenal had to play in Division 2 the next year and some other club won promotion next year?
It might be inconsequential from Tottenham and Arsenal's perspective but it was definitely consequential for the other clubs in Division 2.
P.S.: Really liked the quality of the 2 videos I've watched on your channel so far. ❤
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
That's a very fair point well made. Admittedly I was looking at it through the lens of the Arsenal / Tottenham rivalry, but I can see how that might be reductive. Will keep that in mind in the future!
If you're taking suggestions, I'd love to see a video describing why the football league went from 2pts for a win to 3pts. Loving the content, cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! That sounds like a great suggestion, I'll add it to the shortlist
Thank Jimmy Hill for that
How am I just discovering this channel?
Great content, funny remarks, sweet design, what can I say? You've got yourself a subscriber.
I'll tell you how you're just discovering this channel: This is Route None's first video, and is only 2 months old... There have been a few videos since (I think there's 5 now).
@@MasterTramsTH-cam Wow. I guess I'm an early adopter 💃🏾🕺🏾
One Freddie Pagnam, there’s only one Freddie Pagnam, one Freddie Paaaaagnam!. Loving your work
Been binge watching these videos, very funny and educational. Looking forward to seeing more of this channel
12:16 Did not expect to see a reference to the Star Wars Attack Of The Clones Visual Dictionary! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Is that an Air Bud reference at 3:14?! Outrageously good, well done on all your videos so far mate
I'm a gooner and had no idea....fascinating!!
You should look into the history of Third Lanark. The club went bust through a revenge mission by its last owner. Its a good yarn.
That is a fantastic suggestion. Will add it to the idea list!
I have heard a few stories from old pros about people (usually towards the end of the season when there are possibilities of trophies or relegation) trying to pay off opposing teams to guarantee results. Some of the stories even involve people that aren't "Ron Devie".
For some bizarre reason there was one season at the end of the 80s when there were 21 teams in the first division.
I think when the decision was made to reduce Division 1 (as it was then) from 22 to 20 teams, they didn't want to affect too many teams at once, like four down & two up, or two down & nobody up, etc., so they spread the change over two seasons.
such great quality in your first video?? this channel is destined for success
Cant believe how well you've done since this video over 40k subscribers...Keep up the good work pal
This video popped up on my feed so I watched this to see what you would cover. I was pleasantly surprised, i like the fact you looked out the old maps, ive had to do this to prove it to people myself. if you had added the next map for 1892 the grounds name is changed from Everton to Liverpool. i Like the fact you kept it brief but concise without bias and well put together , i know there is more to the story you should make a more in depth one. here's a couple of things i tell people about the club.
Liverpool's first strip was Blue and white before changing to the familiar red and white. (i don't know if Houlding/McKenna did this to wind Everton up ) Some people assume that one team was Catholic and one team was Protestant, in fact i believe both teams were started under the same religion.
St Domingo's are part of the protestant Methodist church and Houlding was a staunch Protestant and also in the orange order. Being a Scouser and a Red I get asked this a lot in Scotland due to the fact Liverpool's first squad was made up of Scotsmen. a lot of Glasgow Celtic fans i know assume Liverpool is a catholic club and are surprised by this. however Glasgow Rangers fans love that fact. Leaving this comment for the algorithm to kick in, as for some reason (idk why) your channel has a low amount of subscribers, despite your well-crafted, well written and documented video.
Bravo sir, you are doing an amazing job.
Thanks for that! Just getting started so with any luck that subscriber count will continue rising. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
1:04 BRO WHAT IS THIS SOUND OMG
I just found your channel, and I'm loving it! Just like Tifo. I don't understand how a new channel starts making content like yours.
These are absolutely brilliant videos. Can’t wait to see more!
Glad you're enjoying the videos! Thanks for watching and hopefully more of the same soon
How in the hell is THAT the first video on this channel??! This is absolutely top quality! 🔥👏👏

Great page. Great video! Keep doing this mate!
Thank you very much!
Fred Pagnam also played for Arsenal funnily enough
I love the funny little side notes in the background
Top class content mate. Keep up the good work
Brilliant video, and one of the best I've seen around the subject.
Much appreciated Mr. Swagington - hopefully more of the same on the way!
what a great video man love your style
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
It certainly puts the “Never relegated!” boast from Gooners in a new light. Maybe not relegated from the top flight but it appears they didn’t earn their place anyway!
There’s only one way to deal with this and that’s making them earn their place in the top flight legitimately. Until then it’s back to the Championship for them! 😁😜
top top top quality video, you really have top quality writing skills, animation are great, keep up the great work mate
Burton United finished 13th in the Birmingham & District League in 1908. Three minutes of research there
Great channel, without doubt!
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the videos
Just found this channel. Nice work lad.
Much appreciated! Glad you're enjoying the videos
Sam Allardyce catching strays 😭😭 i cannot !!!
Honestly this made me completely a spurs fan.
The modern Arsenal was basically built on the money and corruption of a rich elite.
Coys forever.
but damn you deserve more, you make really QUALITY videos!! keep uppp
Nice to see a fellow Arsenal fan 👑
Nice video.
Brilliant. Thanks for the expo.
All I ever knew was that Arsenal 'stole' Tottenham's spot.
In fairness, Tottenham winning would have been out of character
They started as they meant to go on.
This reminds me of the 1919 Black Sox scandal
That nugget of Gretzky’s really gets around
I subscribed. Great work 👏 👍
Really appreciated, thanks!
Subbed - top quality content - Good Luck with this!
Appreciate that! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment
Great stuff keep it up 👍
Gateshead fans from the 1959/60 season will agree to some dubious activities at the Football League
Sounds like an idea for another video ...
@@RouteNone You could get a whole series out of the shenanigans that went on in the re - election days
These football post match reports do look concise compared to monstrosity of cricket during the same period lool
This is amazing, genuinely amazing.
Thank you very much for the positive feedback!
Itsa da history offa Tottenham. Spurred it in 1914, and will again forever more.
Elite content man!
This Video probably wouldn't have been made without the war, you know, because of the war.
Loved this can’t wait for more videos from u as a Gooner this is beautiful for others to know now
Noice work my friend ✊🏼
We still have footballers today who feel that it is okay to make lewd and vile sexual gestures to an audience that included children, and an English media and fan base who will jump in to defend a playing making disgusting sexual gestures towards an audience that includes a large percentage of children.
Norris was not actually banned for the illegal payments. He was banned cos he took the FA to court for libel and lost (the illegal payments investigation was supposed to remain private, but it was leaked to the press, Norris then sued the FA, implying the FA was suggesting Norris had acted dishonestly - as illegal payments in an era when a maximum wage was in place was commonplace - and numerous teams had been caught out). The FA back then would overreact when their authority was "challenged", as Norris, Enoch West (the 5 other surviving match fixing players accepted their guilt and were reinstated in 1919), and Leeds City all found out the hard way.
This was really funny and really well done. Cheers
Do Jimmy Gauld (unless you have already done it!)
Love this idea, I'll add it to the ideas shortlist
What software did you use to animate this video
My good man. A british gentleman should refer to a Lieutenant as a 'leff-ten-ant' much like how it is not 'ko-lo-nel' but 'ker-nel' for Colonol. As a british commentator you surely must know this difference as it will surely come up very often when discussing football...
This channel is FANTASTIC!!! 😊😊😊 just subbed.
Started cackling when you mentioned Sam Allerdyce honestly
7:42 lol “posthumorously”
great work, what software do you use? Pressie?
This is basically a Football channel with the voice of Tifo and the mannerisms of 10 min history
Nottingham Forest should of been promoted instead
I think that there was an option whether to go to the war or get a lifetime ban and Enoch west was the only one to not pick the war option.
I subscribed a minute in. Quality content tis
Much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed it and welcome aboard!
Gives me a historical context for my loathing of the scummy reds of Man U , Liverpool and ( particularly ) Arsenal ... Blue is the colour ...
Henry was the MVP even then, life really is a circle. Up the Lion King!
8:39 just...perfection
Amazing video
Amazing channel
Great video!
Nice channel, I just feel bad that you are an arsenal fan 😅
Excellent video good sir
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
So, soooo good!!! Its just brilliant!
Sorry but I burst out laughing at 2:20 because of the selection of teams
What does "are game" mean?
"Post-humourously"
"After they had stopped laughing - because, you know - they were dead"
I’m definitely ripping off this style of content for my proposed channel.
If you had to choose...
Every club owned by a nation state, bought with real money, spending real money to make their team the best.
Or,
Every club owned by an American Billionaire, bought with a loan secured on the club's future, every decision taken to benefit the economic situation of the owners and shareholders.
Which would you choose?
I'm still so sad Oldham didn't win the league, they were so close
So Man U and Liverpool fans always talking about history and how sides like City and Chelsea are ruining the game but they are the original culprits smh 🤦♂️
Who wants an odd number of teams in their league? Canadian gridiron football, that's who. CFL been stuck on 9 clubs for ages. Reminded of a few years where the NFL had 31. Amongst other things it stinks when somebody always has to be off even on big days like the final week of the season
commenting to say i was here before it all blew up
Fun fact: The gap between the 1919 vote and Tottenham's second and final league title is 21 years less than the gap between today and that title. Their fans are used to getting worked up about things long past.
0:49 *our game
nothing gets by you mate
2 days to the United v Liverpool game with Anthony Taylor in charge. Dodgy refs have tilted titles to the Manchester clubs for decades
They should play penaltys before the extra times so the team that loses the shootout will be forced to attack
Well, England managed to lose 0-4 on a hot and dry Tuesday night at the Molineux, so it's really only the cold.
As a Gooner, I too do my best writing after three pints. And two, I now know why Spurs suck for so long. Love the video!
Pronouncing "Lieutenant" the American way but with an English accent is really jarring.
