    Sviatoslav Richter plays the Allegro tranquillo, but together with the wonderful orchestra very harmonic, clear and just beautiful, authentic Mozart! absolut great!

    There are good, very good and brilliant performers in the history of piano music, but Richter is a legend, as are List, Rachmaninoff and Rubinstein!

    In the eight-part series about Richter's life and career, "The Enigma", Richter stated that he did not know what to do with Mozart. Haydn, whom Richter preferred - yes! But not Mozart. It is evident from this performance. - Strangely enough, the pianist who excelled in Mozart's piano concertos - Géza Anda - made a similar remark about Haydn: he did not really know what Haydn was about. - These observations are not meant to disparage either Richter or Anda. Richter certainly had the bigger technique. However, Richter and Anda had very different musical affinities. And musical affinities weigh much heavier than technique.

      Anda is still my favorite with Mozart.

      As brilliant as Richter was intellectually, I would be careful about accepting his assessment of his understanding of Mozart, just as I would any artist's self-evaluation. Maria Callas famously expressed disdain for Puccini, especially "Tosca," but others (almost every listener) had no doubt that she was the greatest Tosca ever. The test of Richter's grasp of Mozart is his playing, not his statements. We have many, many recordings (live and studio) of his mastery of Mozart. The same is true for his personal preferences; he may have said that he did not prefer Mozart to Haydn, but he programmed Wolfgang Amadeus from the 1940s to the 1990s.

      i hear what you're saying. it's a slightly pedantic performance, with slightly slower speeds than might be thought usual, and I'm a huge admirer of SR. For me, it lacks that extra element of panache. It's worth adding that the orchestra, especially the woodwind, are as important as the piano in this piece.

    Of course you must consider the style of the older (wise) Richter, but in which you can´t deny to hear and to see his resignation. What´s about to compare this record with his splendid performance of the same concerto in Moscow 1977 under Kyrill Kondrashin...

    I wish I knew how to comment. This performance is so magnificent that I'm prone to ranking it among the all time great concertos. Am I wrong? There's no way we can compare it to Grieg's No 1, Rachmaninoff No. 2, or Mozart's nos. 20,21,24, or 25? Or is there? The themes kept coming, one more beautiful than another. Is it possible that I heard a theme in the 3rd movement that was essentially the same as the 2nd theme in the first movement?

    Are you sure this performance is not from March 3, 1994 (instead of 1993)? Richter would have been nearly 79 years old.

    Ah le pauvre, il avait bien vieilli... Problèmes cardiaques, diverses opérations, dépression, fatigue. Il trouvait un refuge dans la musique mais ça n'était plus du niveau légendaire qui avait époustouflé la terre entière. Immense artiste, mais je suis chagriné de le voir aussi affaibli et triste.

    We can still hear Richter's emotional commitment to the music, but it was no longer visible once he needed to read from the page. Compare his electrifying - both to the ears and to the eyes - performance of Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses: th-cam.com/video/H9qEIcgSXLU/w-d-xo.html. He turned to playing from the score when his once extraordinary memory (he memorized all 48 preludes and fugues of Bach's Well Tempered Klavier in a month) began to let him down in his sixties.

    • @wolfgangklofat594
      @wolfgangklofat594 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not of much sense to compare this Mozart concerto with the piece of Mendelssohn. It would be better to do it with Richter´s own Moscow performance of 1977 under Kiryll Kondrashin.

      @@wolfgangklofat594 My comment was an indirect reply to someone who wrote "If classical music is so great , why does Richter always look so miserable?", so any example of classical music music would do. I hadn't seen the 1977 performance before but I agree it makes a better comparison. It's at th-cam.com/video/JpL1dVsF1g4/w-d-xo.html
