Beethoven loved this composition and kept it in his repertoire. It's Richter, he can do what he wants and it would still be perfection, only we mortals have to stick to the composition.

Исполнение KV466 Рихтером мне нравится больше всего из-за правильного интонирования любой, даже самой короткой, фразы, о котором некоторые исполнители забывают. И ещё это туше, когда звук как бы изливается, становится протяжённым, похожим на звук струнных.

this is my favorite Mozart piano concerto, my favorite Mozart work at all, almost a Beethoven work, Beethoven wrote cadenzas (WoO 58) to the first and third movements of this concerto

Je suis toujours ému quand j'écoute ce concerto, et particulièrement les deux premiers mouvements, quant à Richter, il a su rendre les nuances exquises.
Nobody in their right mind will ever underestimate the genius of Sviatoslav Richter but people rarely come to realize that Kiril Kondrashin could do far better than just a serviceable job. That said, I still like Mravinsky's performances of select Shotakovich symphonies better that Kondrashin's.
The minor, simple, almost seemingly trivial combinations of notes are utilized to an extraordinary emotive effect in this work, starting right from the opening. A mere syncopated chord opening, with a seemingly insignificant rhythmic bass line, creates a sound of a growing foreboding tension. And the extraodrinary recapitulation. Nothing too fancy. Scales and repeated figuration with a mere slight variation from the original theme are present, but arranged in a away that your heart is racing as it builds up in intensity to the cadence in for the cadenza.
Всё безупречно, сверхрационально, конкретно, и со звуком всё в порядке, и с интонациями - но не завораживает. А вот исполнение 20-го концерта Алексеем Султановым потрясает слушаю бесконечное число раз. У него другой Моцарт - страстный, летящий ввысь, божественный, захватываюший и уносящий тебя и ты не в силах сопротивляться этому мощному и волшебному потоку. И ещё уникальный, непостижимый султановский хрустальный звук.
You're right there is surely a stereotype involved in my comment. But to say "I hate this with love" reminds me of my long experience with French culture (and friends), embodied in the Serge Gainsbourg song, "Je t'aime...moi non plus" -- "I love you -- neither do I". No meanness against the French intended, almost my entirely library is 17th, 18th & 19th Century french literature classics, and my oldest and closest friends are French. Just an observation, agree or disagree as you will.
The piano sounds as though it is a pianoforte rather than a modern piano. Does anyone have any idea about the instrument used in this recording? Maybe the group is know for using older instruments.?
Yes, Richter played Beethoven's cadenzas in this piece, in the 1st and 3rd movements. The are virtuoso pieces and in every Richter recording of Mozart Piano 20 I have heard he played them.

Since I don't read music, trying to pinpoint the 1st cadenza - does it run roughly from 4 to 13 mins - about 9 mins long?
And is the 3rd movement cadenza from 30:00 to 31:30 ?
