      Harry's channel is such a welcome relief from all the nouveau-riche 10 year olds running around buying Lamborghinis that have no appreciation for the history of the sports car and no real ability to describe what it's like to own and drive these cars beyond their exclamaing how cool they are.

      I think the hollow stem is completely filled with Na. Heat from the valve head is conducted rapidly to the valve stem and thence to the valve guide in the cylinder head, which is water cooled. This was required in two valve high performance engines. Use of four valve heads decreases the specific valve heat loading.

    • @spacedust2270
      @spacedust2270 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was Iain joking about when he said about when he started his career with Rolls Royce/Bentley he didn't use a torque wrench lol and if anyone walked in with one you'd be fired 😳

    • @john1703
      @john1703 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spacedust2270 Possibly not. I have heard that RR nuts and machine screws were so well made that hand torque with the appropriate swan neck ring spanner was all that was required. When the spanner just begins to flex, the nut or screw is just tight enough.

    A new Lambo engine rebuild video, Iain launches a channel, a huge Tory landslide and a big jump in the value of the pound. Days don't get much better than this. I enjoy all of Harry's videos (cars and farm), but this particular series has been exceptional. Sodium used in valve stems to dissipate heat - I had no idea. Iain is fascinating to listen to and I look forward to his channel very much.

    It's been a lot of fun watching these videos. As an American enthusiasts, I rarely get a chance to even see cars like this. Let alone see what's involved in it's resurrection. So many things to consider. So many things to wear out and need replacing lest one does severe destruction. And to understand what's involved in the purchase and ownership of a car like this. I've been watching these out of order. This doesn't seem to matter as one is as enjoyable as the last.

    What great guy, Ian is. Absolutely impressed in the way he goes about his work and his knowledge. I worked shore based for a trawling company in Aberdeen back in the 70's who had two trawlers with Polar V12 main engines with sodium exhaust valves and they "dropped" a few valves over time. What a mess. New piston, liner, head, turbo and damage to other cylinders. Total strip down and a tow back from the fishing grounds.

    I wish I could wind the clock back 30 years and serve an apprenticeship with this chap, his knowledge and experience is awe-inspiring. That red XJ-S in the background looks pretty special too. Like good wine and attractive women, old Jags get better and better with age. Didn't Gambit in The New Avengers have an early XJ-S in red, or was his yellow? My memory is letting me down a bit. I remember the yellow Rover 3500 Steed drove, and the dark green Broadspeed XJ-C with the utterly fabulous Gene Hunt Wheelarches. The car's of my childhood are so much more appealing than today's offerings. I wonder which cars of today our children will be hankering after in another 30 years though.

    I grew up in the 1970s reading Road & Track magazine. While kids in my school were reading Hot Rod and dreaming about the latest Camaro I was the weird kid dreaming about Ghibli’s, Miura’s, Daytona’s, Alfa’s, Citroen’s, Lotus’s, etc. Espada, Jarama, Uracco/Jalpa were all cool cars. It bugs me that so many people throw shade at them because all they can identity Lamborghini with is the Miura and Countach/Diablo/Murcielago/Aventador. I think the Espada is fantastic. Nice that you’re giving one some love. Kudos.

    So that's how the sodium is incorporated in the valves. I had just assumed that technology simply had a fully filled core inside the stem, and that the sodium had better heat transfer properties than the outside. Fascinating !

    • @EdwardT9
      @EdwardT9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Laz Arus it’s also that the sodium is going through a phase change from liquid to gas at 838C, which is a really hot exhaust valve temperature, so it can absorb a large amount of heat and hold a constant temperature. Like an ice cube in a glass holds it 0C.

    • @Laz_Arus

    Good for you with the Zircotec coatings! Now you can go one more and coat the pistons crowns and skirts for Lower coefficient of friction and much reduction in heat transfer on the piston. Its all in the details.. If you wanted to be really fancy you would also coat the valve areas inside into combustion chamber.. If you've ever seen a valve going up and down at 7k rpm they practically turn cherry red.. Magnificent work BTW. The shop you're working with are true pro's.

    I didn't know how much I didn't know about engines, but I do now. Love these videos and looking forward to more of the same from Iain Tyrrell.

    I have always loved the Espada since they came out. I saw a Marzel in the flesh as well at a motor show here in NZ way back in the 1960's.
