29:11 This moment hit me harder than anything else in the game. Frank is your first big bad guy. He was a mean, ol' gangster who controlled the streets, bribed the police, straight up pulled a knife on you and even tried to blast you down with a robot. He was by all means an awful person. And yet, your actions helped turn his life around. He abandoned the thug life, even got a decent job. Hell, he's even a bit nice to you when you meet him again while he's on duty. Frank has no reason to like you at all. You smashed his face, you smashed his robot, and you smashed the pretty successful (if criminal) life and career he had for himself. And yet, his first instinct when hearing Paula's plea for help is to stop what he's doing, huddle to a corner of his restaurant, and pray for the safety of the boy who set him straight. This is what had hurt Giygas so much. The idea that even someone as despicable as Frank could become a good man.
@Roberto del Fuego Except when you know first game, then you know that Gyigas is far from being evil himself. He in fact was one of largest victims in that story.
The way I interpreted it is that Ness beating Frank turned his life around from one of crime to one that was more positive, which is why he’s seen in the hamburger shop.
The final boss fight left such a huge impression on me. Little 6 year old me had gotten to the last phase of the the fight. I didn't know I had to use Paula's pray ability at the time, and I refused to use the player's guide. I wanted to beat the game by myself. But I was almost out of items, and the party's PP was running low. In a desperate attempt, I used the Pray command in hopes of restoring some health. Then the first scene in Saturn Valley played. Freaking out, I kept praying and praying. I was almost heartbroken when the prayers stop reaching anyone. Then, when my name appeared on the screen, I flipped. I ran to my mom and dragged her to the TV. I wanted to show her that I was directly helping out Ness and his friends. It's memories like this that make Earthbound on of my favorite games of all time!
And after the great battle ends, Ness's soul returns to his bo-- *Your inventory is full, please drop something to make room for your soul.* Damn it!!!!
Theo Aremevano Earthbound Halloween Hack by Toby Fox The events of Earthbound where they defeat Gaigas but they never returned back to their timeline, and Dr Andonuts was framed as villain for killing four kids back in time.
*literally destroys the embodiment of evil* Jeff: "It was great hanging out with you guys" Like it makes it seem like a normal thing. Like yeah let's do it again next Saturday guys see ya then to go kill evil itself!
I mean. After the tent and the literal chaos it created, evil itself isn’t quite so threatening anymore. Imagine what the tent must’ve felt like for the characters.
Not a lot of people seem to talk about this, but it's rather strange how the screen goes static as Giygas meets his demise. After all, he is not mechanical. Then you remember that Ness and his friends are robots at that point, so the static actually comes from them, showing just how powerful the energy of Giygas' destruction is. Of course this is obvious since they're lying on the ground, completely scrapped after the battle, but I find it a cool detail that's overlooked sometimes.
RapidRecharge Especially after you’ve seen that one fan art of Paula praying, with Ness shielding her on his last legs, and Jeff and Poo laying unconcious while Giygas just exists in the background.
maybe he is just desinagreting (the voice to text is awful so i have to spell it from memory so that's why the spelling is crap) its also in the music and the intro
A lot of people like to say, "I found a huge plot-hole! The 8 melodies never did anything!" Ever wonder how Paula was able to speed her prayer to everyone on Earth? Remember how Ness, learning all 8 melodies, united his mind with Earth? I like to think that Paula channeled her prayers through Ness, whose mind is connected with all of Earth. That, plus they wouldn't have met all those people if it wasn't for their quest. It's about the journey, not the destination.
That first line isn't even a plot hole, the Eight Melodies were what allowed Ness to enter Magicant (which is why it happens as soon as you finish Fire Spring), becoming super strong once you defeat Ness' Nightmare.
@@earthandspace2073 yeah, but the problem is that it wasn't required for you to defeat Giygas, as Paula's prayers and the Phase Distorder are what ended up doing so.
Personally, what I think, is that if Earthbound is a game about growing up, Giygas symbolizes loss of innocence. When you realize that the world is much scarier and crueler than you were led to believe as a child. That's why when Ness defeats Giygas, he's so much stronger. He's seen the worst things of the world, and powered through it all.
323starlight the last part kinda sounds like what he said in his Earthbound video, from what I remember. Though I think since Giygas is based on what Itoi thought was a rape scene in a movie, it's clear to me that Giygas symbolizes loss of innocence. And once you get past the fact that the world isn't the greatest place, you've truly grown, I think.
I think that some of Giygas' cries out to Ness make him seem... Innocent. Like, "It hurts" and "I'm so sad", are just a shout for help. His search for power has destroyed him to the point that what little good remains of him is so small, so lonely, so scared. He not only lost his mind, but he's also tearing himself apart just to get it back. Like Chugga said, he's being tormented by the evil that he is, and his fear and his guilt is so strong. He is not his own being, and his utter urge to destroy is backed up by a tiny plea for help. "...go... b... a... c... k..." "It's not right... not right... not right..."
Well, Giegue *did* become completely insane when he became the monster he is now. All he can say is memories of his tragic past. Memories he can't even recall existed. He's *that* broken. It's really sad what happened to Giegue when he became Giygas.
I know this is late, but i think it was confirmed that Giygas' dialogues were this trauma Itoi had when he was a child, he was simply walking around his house one night past his bedtime and the tv was showing a rape or a murder scene (sources may differ but if you ask me it was a rape scene).
@@ped3752 I thought it was him walking into the wrong theater as a child? And also he really misremembered it and it wasn’t actually a rape scene at all. The woman in that movie didn’t even have any lines, actually..... the only sound she made was a squawk.
Emile, I know a lot of people compliment you, but I truly mean it when I say I appreciate you so much. I'm 19, and a sophomore in college. I've been watching you since I was 13, and when I first started watching you, I was struck by how much work you put into your videos. Your videos are extremely high quality, surpassing most big budget entertainment even. I thought Splatoon looked really dumb when it came out and didn't purchase it. Then, you released your videos on the game, and I LOVE the series now (if you couldn't tell by my profile pic). This LP combines the charm of an old, already done game, with an entertaining and informative commentator. From the bottom of my heart, Emile, thank you. Thank you for all you've done for me. With more sincerity than can be measured: -A Fan
I’m 22 and found out about him through his Paper Mario series when I was 13. He’s been my favorite TH-camr ever since. His quality is unparalleled and he’s only gotten better and more professional through the years. 😄
*The world gets saved.* Poo: we saved the world. We have taken on a great burden and have completed the task we have set out to achieve. I have learnt much from this experience, I have matured and grown, as we all have. But I must go now - my people need me! Jeff: thanks for hanging out with me! Soooo... you guys gonna date?
I think Jeff was more saying, "Even though you guys are probably going to get together, please still be my friend. Don't forget me," sort of thing. Still cute. He and Poo are worlds apart and I love the differences between their heartfelt fair wells'. Poo's restraint and gifts verses Jeff just hugging them both and saying that he will always be around to help in his own awkward way.
Ok but, can we take a brief moment to appreciate the Giygas fight. Like, first you have the whole shtick with Po(r)k(e)y, which is the complete and utter definition of unnerving. His odd, semi-childlike and semi-overly mature dialogue. His constant reminders that he is absolutely terrified as to what’s going on and not only doesn’t care, but loves it. The thought of what he literally just snuck off to go do (*sob*). Then, he switches off the Devil’s Machine, and oooohhh boy things go a different direction. Those horrifying backgrounds, that droning music, the utter incomprehensibility of Giygas period. And above all, that dialogue. Everything he says is conflicting, he’s literally tearing himself apart, and the universe is coming down with it. He is utter and straight evil power, not a thought in its twisted head other than destroy and its last shreds of its past. And god, what he says... Then there’s the Prayers. Mother has been a series that blatantly shows the absolute evil that humanity can possess (and no game showed it further than Mother 3). However, scenes like this show just how _pure_ humanity can be. They all had different thoughts. You had an ex-thug thinking about that cool kid who he met that one time. You have a little boy who dearly misses his friend and fears for his life. A kingdom that thought for a moment that their nobel ruler had died. A group of children who miss that cool older girl, and parents who miss her and worry for her sake. And, of course, a “Mother”, whose son left on an epic, life-threateningly dangerous journey. She supports him how she can, but obviously misses him terribly and is terrified for his well-being. And what do all these people do at these thoughts? They Pray. All across the world, these people were united under one thought: let these children be safe.

So something to note here: The "Devils Machine" that Pokey turned off: if you were using a pirated copy of Earthbound... that is when the game is designed to, I kid you not, reset the game. I want to even go so far as to say that it deletes your save as well... which is ingenious if you think about it: to come that far with the increased encounters... just to start over because you aren't playing an official copy.
Pirated games at the time tended to use big generic cartridges, and so the game would check if the cartridge it was on was bigger than it should be, and just show a screen reminding you that piracy is bad instead of loading the game. You could get past this by changing the game's code, but the game could find out you did this and instead of throwing you back out, would just fuck with you until the devil's machine opened, then delete your saves.
I find Pokey more terrifying than Giygas. He was Ness’s childhood friend, and throughout the course of the story, Ness and you, the player, witness Porky slowly become a fighter for Giygas until you fight Giygas himself. Pokey constantly ridicules you on so many different things. He’s practically making all the decisions for Giygas. He even lives beyond Giygas’s defeat. Then you learn what he’s done in Mother 3.
Yeah Pokey was more dangerous because he was coherent in earthbound. He was just a kid with a crappy life that was given a taste of evil and morphed into his own.
@Xx_ShadowSlayer_xX Because despite what most people think Gyigas isn't strictly evil. He has mental shutdown after he regain memory hearing lullaby and become aware that he was forced to kill grandson of woman who rise him, and only person he ever loved before her tragic death. Porky was one who find Gyigas and attempt to use his power for own gain, until Ness bring him to senses. Pokey Minch was true villain all the time especially after he attempt to create army of the monster hybrids totally of his own terms, though even he has redeeming quality. PS: Earthbound and Pokemon was made by same people by the way ;D
Imagine getting a phone call literally the second to last step before fighting Giygas and just seeing the all-powerful, omnipresent textbox in the corner. "Hello, it's your dad."
Three years late, but i just finished my first playthrough of Earthbound and i got the phone call in the post-credits scene where Picky knocks on the door. It was hilarious, especially since i played it while following along with this series.
I love how its the prayer to Ness's mom that fatally wounds Giygas (going off the soundtrack names for each part Giygas's battle) … its pretty much a loop around back to mother 1, with Giygas being extremely hurt by the power of the love between a mother and child. I'm petty sure whatever was left of the old Giygas/Giugue felt the love between Ness and his mom in that prayer, which brought him back a final time, to him and Maria. That alone was enough to strike a mortal blow to his already destroyed psyche. (I mean heck, the eight melodies are even playing during that prayer!)
Yes the track at 30:02 that plays for the prayer with Ness's mom, is the Eight Melodies. It's the same melodies that you collect in the sound stone to complete the game, and is a major plot point in Mother 1/earthbound beginnings, and is what you learn to complete that game as well.
I do not understand. What did he do? This is the first time I've seen this game, though I'll be downloading it after watching this Let's Play. I've also never played it. So am I missing something?
I don't mind. This is how I learn about all of the games I buy. That way I know it will be worth the money, and besides spoilers don't bother me. Watching something doesn't compare to the satisfaction of doing it myself (although Emile makes me laugh harder and still stay informative and detailed with each new LP). Knowing that a movie ends well makes me wonder what will happen between the lowest point and the climax. Even if someone gives me a summary of a movie, they probably left something out, and even if they didn't, they'd have to be a veteran author (and have a lot of time on their hands) to describe it in its full glory. I know that isn't a widely held opinion, but that's why spoilers just don't bother me.
I like to picture Giygas as, not something, but a feeling, the feeling of evil, terror and loneliness, inside of you. And after the battle, Ness and his friends overcome this feeling. There’s a Giygas inside all of us...
Great comment, but the juxtaposition between what you said and your profile pic makes it next to impossible to take you completely seriously. I'm sorry.
Yeah so, I did a bit of research on TV Tropes, and apparently, Giygas sprang right out of the developer’s nightmares. And seeing it now... I believe it.
TheAutisticTamerGirl i don’t think the ENTIRE thing was solely based on a movie scene. Itoi did say something about it, but I think he meant that the movie inspired the intensity of the design. I feel theres a lot more behind the design besides that, based off mother 1
TheAutisticTamerGirl it’s not outright based on the scene, or really at all. The truth is, Itoi walked into a horror movie's consensual sex scene (albeit it ends in murder) while he was VERY young, and it traumatized and unsettled him. He wanted to recreate that feeling of uncertainties and inherent “this is wrong” feeling in the player. He succeeded
I don't think any of those four individuals were the REAL HERO because each of them needed each other to be strong without all of them they wouldn't be able to beat giygas like how buzz buzz helped ness and ness saved paula and jeff saved ness and paula and poo came to help snd lend his power together they were unbeatable. But in a way I guess buzz buzz was the real hero.
I must say the anti-epilepsy blur added in the re-release makes the final phase look amazing. It's so mesmerising and almost hypnotic, and it really adds to the feel of fighting something as truly incomprehensible as Giygas.
(Mother 1 spoilers) I've grown to feel really bad for Giygas, he was raised with love as a baby, lost all that, went to invade Earth decades later, got reminded of his past emotions through hearing the song that was once a lullaby to him and all the conflicting emotions quite literally ripped him apart, turning him into this. This mindless, not comprehensive state of destruction made out of negativity. He is seen as nothing as this horrifying evil force and then he's dead. I really wish more knew about the real Giygas aka Giegue. I also hope he's in Smash as possibly Mewtwo's echo, the poor cat alien thing needs some more love, haha. Anyway, this game's ending is absolutely beautiful, thank you Emile for playing it once again after all these years, and thank you Iwata for saving it.

And I also just realized that when giygas is saying that he's hurt and scared, he's begging for ness's help and indirectly or directly asking him to end his life... dark
I chose to not discuss the prequel to this game so much, letting it stand on its own merits and not spoiling a separate game for people. But I can certainly say that the two big forces in this battle are people I feel bad for.
Something that I just thought of, and I've never heard anyone who I've talked to about EarthBound bring up before is this: Pokey states Giygas IS the evil energy. And that is something I find very interesting, because every time you beat back the evil energy that was manipulating a city, you were defeating the final boss before you knew you were even fighting the final boss. Sure you weren't getting rid of him, but you were pushing the most powerful person in the universe back and not letting him gain an inch all the way back in the early parts of your adventure. And when you look back at it, that gives Giygas even more of the presence that he already had. Just giving a villain a presence in a game without having him physically show up is hard. I honestly think the writers did this beautifully just by injecting this one detail. Changing it from him being the source to literally being the energy itself. It makes it feel much more like instead of sending people after you, that he was physically manipulating people to attack you that, while you couldn't see him, he was there in every fight you were having. And that in my mind is brilliant.
So... Can we kill him with the Love love stick? Like how Kirby kill dark matter with it, the weapon created by showing others kindness? Man, who knows Kirby and Earthbound have something similar
Due to Porky turning off the Devil Machine, I believe he was not under Giygas's influence. He likely put himself into the machine so he could contain himself, but Porky released him to defeat Ness' group.

Before this series, I knew Earthbound as "the game chuggaaconroy likes." Now I see it as a touching, charming, and wonderfully crafted game with humor, but a foot in reality, introduced to me by an awe-inspiring content creator. You managed to introduce informative elements into the already existing story, while still keeping the funny parts funny, but the serious parts serious. I was introduced to many games I now love thanks to you, and it kind of makes me think of you as, perhaps, "a friend who I've never met?"
Wall of text incoming: (Not that exciting, but kinda something emotional for me) I remember I was dating someone for 4 years. I know: that's not that long, but it was a long time for me, and it was during an important time in my life (ya know: college, finding myself, loved ones getting sick...). This person was NOT a gamer by any means, but I introduced her to EarthBound, and she liked it. She started this game when we first dated, and finished it right at the very end; we broke up when she had just about an hour's worth left of EarthBound, so we spent the rest of that day finishing the game for some closure--there were a lot of emotions that day, as you could imagine. EarthBound isn't just one of my favorite games, it's my favorite work of fiction, and EarthBound came to me during ANOTHER important time in my life (ya know: middle school, friendships, crushes...). So I knew this game like the back of my hand and must have beaten it at least a dozen times over the years. But man... This game's ending was so much heavier that day... We had a fun relationship, and it was awesome to me that this game was always there--every once in a blue moon we'd settle down, have a cozy night and make some SLIGHT progress towards finishing this game. We started our adventure together as Ness started his, we had our rough patches as Ness did, and overcame our issues as Ness did. Watching everything wrap up, having the main characters we've grown to love LITERALLY PRAY as they potentially leave their lives behind to face the unknown, and then having them all look back on their adventure to say goodbye and go back to their normal lives... That never hit me so hard until that day. As much as it hurt, that was the absolute perfect way to end such a big part of my life. I don't even know what else to say about this. I'm an English teacher and I can't even describe how otherworldly this moment was. I'm fine, we're friends, and we've both moved on. I just wanted to share that because I've always loved this ending but over the past year, this has meant so much more to me.
I see everyone putting in these heartfelt messages for our friend Emile. Well its my turn. Dear Emile/Chugga A. Conroy. I found out about you. 10 years ago. I was 10 years old. Around 3rd Grade watching your videos. I got internet that year and this guy is playing a game from a character I only know from smash. I have my love of the mother series from you Emile. You feel like an old friend who I grew up with. I'm 20 now and you still bring the same smile to my face that I had when I was alone and young. Thanks again for the everything Emile/Chugga. You mean a lot to me as a person. You helped my development as a person when I didn't have anyone who I felt was like me and I can't appreciate that enough. Thank you for everything and here's to 10 more years. Thank You. - Another Fan (Pedro From AZ)
Wow, I have to say... that anti-epilepsy blurring during the final phase was something else entirely. Seriously, I'd say that did a better job at capturing how incomprehensible the boss is than the original. Also, my experience: Final phase. I was out of PP, out of Health-restoring items, all of my characters were dangerously low on health. Only Paula and Ness remained alive, and Paula was crying. Mortal damage on both. I get the pray at the last moment to finish Giygas off once and for all. Made an emotional battle even more emotional.
Pokey's theme is the biggest plot twist out of the entire game. 8 bit to metal on a game made for the SNES. Then comes Giygas.... Thank you Reggie from Nintendo, very cool.
"All of us kept praying" I couldnt help but shed a tear I knew the name had to do something with us but I never expected it this way. Thank you, I absolutely love this game now because of you Chugga :'3
I don't think a lot of people understand just how... Truly disturbing the Gigyas fight is. Like, you can see it when watching this video, I know I did, but You can't FEEL it. My first time fighting Gigyas Was in the dead of night, and it was... entrancing. Not in a comfortable way, not in a terrifying way, I just felt... numb the entire fight. And I'd seen the fight before on TH-cam before I got my own cart. Seeing this off of a CRT in the middle of the night just... does things to the mind, I tell ya. When I beat him, I literally just sat there for a few minutes. It was like I didn't even know what happened. I don't even remember Pokey's last taunt. One of the most unforgettable moments in gaming, for me.
There was this one time I replayed Earthbound on the Super Famicom (The Japanese Version not the European one) and when I saw that last scene while holding using the original hardware, I got a new sense of how terrorfying it must've been for the kids in the 90s. I was shook after playing it on an EMULATOR, much less looking at a CRT at the dead of Night on a 1990s weekend as a child! I'd be remembering Earthbound for all the wrong reasons. I really want to see someone talk about that battle from the og Japanese perspective. I wonder how it would be.
Yeah, I just finished this game a few days ago in the middle of the night, and I felt the same as you, I couldn't even really say anything during or afterwards. I don't know if it was my posture on my seat (cause the cables on the SNES Classic are super short), but I had that same feeling of numbness in my arms and face. Not fear, really, just complete stillness from the trippy visuals, the mocking dialogue, and the dissonant music. Kind of makes me wish I'd never seen images of him since he's the ubiquitous "nightmarish final boss". My younger brother (who was watching me play through the whole game) had never seen images of him, so for him it was an utter surprise, he was shocked. What a uniquely great game.
Luigi Is The Best my first LP was Super Paper Mario personally, I was so impressed by the quality of his videos that in turned into my own fascination for studying video games and learning all their is about each game 100%, even if I couldn’t play it myself
Emile kept praying. All of us kept praying. I think that, right there, is one of many great testaments to how much Emile has changed over the past decade of doing this. Instead of (arguably) selfishly proclaiming himself to be the hero, instead he gets everyone involved. “That’s right, guys, I just saved the world, and so can you if you play Earthbound!” sounds slightly arrogant now, in context to this redone LP. Emile... wasn’t himself back then. He was quieter, more vulgar with a tendency to swear more often as well as make dirty awful sexual jokes, had more of a tendency to ramble on and go on tangents that had nothing to do with the game itself and just were used to fill what would otherwise be dead air because he had no idea what to talk about, he considered all the info and backstory and lore on the games he played as “useless knowledge”, he talked and made mocking remarks during cutscenes and tried to rush his way through text, all because he thought nobody would care. But... I’m glad he doesn’t do that anymore. I’m glad that I can watch his stuff or play it in the background and be able to both see and hear how he’s changed for the better. He’s revealed a compassionate heart, a wealth of knowledge, and a love of puns and positivity that’s practically contagious and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m glad, ever thankful, that I found you in April of 2009. You were the first ever Let’s Player I ever found, and it’s been amazing to watch you grow from that point onward. I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I hadn’t found you, because no matter what, you never fail to make me laugh or at least smile on the worst of days. Thank you. Here’s to another decade.
@@yellowpower3755 sorry but that middle section of him talking about Emile wasn't positive and just plain uncomfortable and rude. Nobody has a right to talk about someone else in that manner unless your actually close to them. Even then, talking about someone like that publicly is still inappropriate
If you're reading this near the beginning of the video, and are prone to seizures or any other type of epilepsy, I would recommend skipping the Giygas fight, as the later parts contain bright flashing lights. If somebody could provide specific timestamps, that would be great.
The game wasn't allowed any official rereleases from Nintendo until they fixed all the seizure-inducing moments. And Chuggaa is playing the Wii U rerelease, so I can safely assume it's real.
Dear Chuggaaconroy, I can confidently say that you have thoroughly changed my mind about EarthBound. When I started watching this LP I hadn’t even brought myself to complete the game, because despite many of its positive qualities I felt it was too cumbersome for its own good. However, you single-handedly changed my mind. EarthBound is now one of my favorite video games of all time, and I can confidently say now that I understand the praise behind EarthBound. So, I just wanted to tell you a simple thank you! I would end saying how remarkable of a feat this was, but let’s be real, it’s what you do. From an old fan, Vernaiko (Will)
That's very nice to hear! If you don't mind sharing, what was it that Emile showed or did that changed you mind? I'm just genuinely curious, as this is one of my all-time favorite work of fiction!
Otacon464 Oh, shoot, sorry! Poor wording on my part. Xenoblade Chronicles was when I first played it, and always will be my favorite video game of all time. Though, I would say that the game also isn’t explicitly for everyone as different people have wildly different taste. Granted, because it doesn’t appeal to a large demographic, I think this is why it is such an amazing game for the aspects that go appreciated by people whose tastes it aligns with.
joe Well, mainly, what sold me was two things mainly. The first of these was the first episode, actually. This is purely because it got me to actually pick the game back up after I realized why I started playing it in the first place, the opening sequence. However, the moment that really sold me was him throughout the series showing the little details. It really showed just how intuitive EarthBound is as a game, and how it really is a full realization of the visual medium itself.
Otacon464 it’s just like I stated in my response. It was poor wording. Does it really matter this much? I edited the original comment since apparently it is so integral that it be changed. And let me also restate what I said earlier. Even if I didn’t like Xenoblade Chronicles, what relevance does this even have to the original comment? I’m sorry if I’m being a little bit curt here, however it is a bit frustrating when somebody responds multiple times with something that barely has anything to do with the original comment.
Emile- You should have talked about the Anti-piracy measure Nintendo creates in this battle. If anyone doesn’t know what this, it takes place when Pokey states “you will be just another meal to him.” and before the next Phase the game will freeze and the check will happen, then the games resets, if the check fails, all your save data will be wiped completely!
It’s worth noting that the anti-piracy check is multi-tiered. If I remember correctly, the first check it does is before you start playing and it gives you an on-screen warning. Then it starts spawning enemies at a much higher rate than usual, then the Giygas thing happens.
It's not that the game freezes, checks then resets. The game checks after you exit out of Pokey's dialogue box during that scene, then freezes. You have to hard-reset the game yourself; your save data is still completely wiped, though.
Time to throw my story of Chugga since everyone else is! I first found your channel when i was in elementary school, maybe 4th grade? I had only recently discovered TH-cam for myself and wanted to know if anyone out there was playing my favorite game, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, and lo and behold, there you were. Outside of how helpful your guide was, i fell in love with your style of content. It was the perfect balance of humor and information. Whether or not you know, you've helped me through some of the worst times in my life. Me and my father, we dont really have a good relationship. He didn't treat me like my brother or sister, who he deeply cared for and was proud of while i was just left out of his thoughts, even though we were all as average as you can get. I'd find myself coming back to your videos time and time again to remind myself that there is something happier in the world, even if it's far away. Every game you've played has impacted me in the best ways possible. I could go on for hours talking about it, but this comment is already long as it is. After being a fan of yours for so long, you've made me realize something. I want to be just as good of a person as you. I want to bring as much joy and happiness to this world as possible. As weird as this might be to say about a TH-camr, you inspire me to be the way I am. Emile, i can't say this enough, Thank You. You bring more happiness into this world than anyone could even imagine. -Some Young Adult You've Never Even Met
This fight has to still be one of the most ingenious final boss fights in any game I've ever had the experience of playing and/or watching. It's just incredible. Especially having your player name pop up at the end to deliver the mortal blow to Giygas in prayer is... incredible.
You mention some people say the glass makes pokey's skin seem blue, but in the battle screen, you can see the glass doesn't alter the backgrounds color. Pokey's skin is blue.
When I first fought the final boss, I tried everything to beat him, but alas nothing was working. I remembered Pokey’s taunts and thought “yeah why not, I’ve never used pray before anyway” and well you know the rest. Thank you Chugga, for getting me to finally play and beat this wonder of a game. Keep on doing what you’re doing.
The "All of us kept praying" got me. It speaks to me on such a level with this game. It is seriously fits this game, no... this community so well. Its not just Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo fighting Giygas. Its all of us. All of us, fans of the series, fans of the game, we are right there with Ness and friends, right next to them the entire time and helping them. It is honestly the best way I think anyone could have done the fight for Giygas. It is a wonderful love letter. Thank you Emile.
I love Giygas as a villain, but I honestly feel like he wouldn't be nearly as cool without his backstory explained in the first Mother game. Also, my theory as to what Giygas represents, if you flip his sprite 180 degrees (upside down), he looks like a very distorted version of his form back in Mother (Earthbound Beginnings), keep in mind that Giygas is "happy" when he hears the prayers that are killing him, that's because it reminds him of the love Maria gave to him when he was young.
Now was I the only one who thought that the repeating pattern of faces in pain that represents Giygus looked like it was in pain when it was moving slow but as the fight progressed and the pattern moved faster it looked like a smiling face?
this channel probably has the best community ever now everybody likes to say that about their favourite channel but jeez who doesn't like the kindness of Emile and his fans including me wanted to see the first lp but the fact that it was recorded in 2008 turned me a little down plus not to be rude but a youtuber's first lp isn't very good and with this I can expirience the true love that Emile has for the series might I add that Emile also has the super power of convensing people that some game series that may sound stupid at first are actually pretty cool on the day of my birthday I plan to buy splatoon 2 a game that I thought was stupid because I didn't like first or third person shooters, xenoblade chronicles is another one I saw his lp and now have the second game with over 200 hours played in less than a year I trully thank Emile for introducing me to these great game series
Emile is amazing. He helped me through a really tough time when I didn't even have any friends to talk to. Not to mention I wouldn't have played Legend of Zelda without him
Just the first few episodes of this let's play were enough to convince me to get Earthbound on my 3DS and play along with this. Playing a game along with one of Emile's let's plays is always a cool experience. Playing a game for the very first time along with one of Emile's let's plays... Just yes.
Pokey really deserves what he got in Mother 3, he is an awful person altogether, all he did was out of selfishness, he even took it to a point where he guided someone to death because he wanted to beat Ness... That's pityful
To this day, Giygas is still one of the most unnerving entities in video games, and I feel he will always hold up. Despite how short is was, I'm gunna miss this series honestly. As for Giygas as a character, I feel the series is mainly about his tragedy, being raised by two parents, one who would love him, and one who would use him. And before his death, having to re-experience the pain of losing love all over again.
Damn. I was expecting at least one video in between the last one and the ending. But I guess a single video consisting of the area before Giygas would be too short...
I'm not the only one who thinks that Chugga does and AMAZING pokey voice, right? Anyways, this was a great little remake of a classic LP. Ive been watching your channel for years, so this is great. Really great, Chugga!
The fact that giygas finally feeling the good and seeing friendship in ness and his friends... the fact that it hurts and it makes him sad and is what kills him is deeply disturbing in such a real way. I've never seen PURE evil so well personified within the confines of one final boss battle before.
Absolutely. It also sort of makes me feel... sad for him? Like, he is the embodiment of evil, the exact opposite of good, yet in this fight he gives the impression that he WANTS that good. He wants it, but he can't have it. It literally HURTS him when he is confronted by such goodness. He no longer has a choice in the matter, even though I feel a longing coming from him. It's so complicated and I love it. I love that this game wasn't afraid to make kids think.
@Lord God The opposite.. this lullaby is something what his human mother sing before she died, and his memory were erased so he would fulfill his designated role as invasion commander. Fact that he understand love is what destroy him mentally on the first place, when he was forced to kill his nephew Ninten, and he wasn't even aware of that until he start singing so he was taken off guard. Ness in fact bring him back to sanity after Pokey just exploit his power.
I don't think i have epilepsy, i can just get nauseous with flashing lights, like one time we went to this Christmas thing and they had flashing lights all along the floor, walls and ceilings going off at different times, my family said i suddenly went extremely pale, i started wobbling and almost falling over, and i remember suddenly my vision going black and feeling like i was gonna pass out, and right now i feel like i wanna throw up and i have a headache, kinda wish i read your comment before the video as damn, that was a bit severe with the flashing and stuff XD
@@kierancampire As someone with sensory issues, Aspergers/autism can do that to you too. I can't stand florescent lights for that reason. Just throwing that out there.
Everything about that battle with gyagas actually distressed me. I'm usually pretty good with horror or unsettling things but I never felt every single one of my senses (yes, even touch and smell somehow) overwhelmed with pure fear. I had always heard of gyagas and how horrifying he was, now I have experienced the terror.
The fight against Giygas is absolutely genius. I'd say that's probably how I'd describe this entire game. It's a timeless work of art, and that final battle is the perfect climax to this amazing journey.
Dear Chugga, you are the first TH-camr i ever remember watching. Your hilarious commentary, the passion you put into your videos, and everything else, made me so happy. Your videos have often helped me through the hardest of times, and were always there when i needed them. Thank you so much. Your fan, Daniel
This is my theory on the death of Geigue, & the birth of Giygas. Mother 1 Spoilers ahead: Maria & George are kidnapped to raise Geigue. In doing so, Geigue gains attachment for humans, & for earth. He is only defeated in Mother 1 by the 8 melodies, which remind him of what he loves. It is my belief, that in his sadness, he begins conquering the rest of the universe, & all his collected hate & power eventually kills him. By the time of Earthbound, Geigue is dead. Now there is only Giygas, the embodiment of evil. All that remains of Geigue is his regret & shame of his actions. Knowing how many lives he’s ruined, & the things he’s destroyed. It was this that killed Geigue. The sheer loneliness & hatred of himself caused his death, & the creation of Giygas. As a being of hate & sadness, it cannot comprehend the positive energy of the prayers. This is why when it’s loaded with so much positive energy, it implodes on itself.
It is not a theory. It is a poor fan-fiction 0_0 First of all Gyigas/Gigue is translation thing. It isn't relevant. He definitely isn't also dead or travel nowhere. He sit in White Ship wreckage until Pokey show up and attempt to use his power. Ness in fact bring him to senses.
TheRezro Farhanah Fauzi Thanks for the feedback, & clarification. Upon further consideration I see the inconsistencies between my comment & the cannon of the Mother series.
Prior to this I only knew Giygas as a silly swirly who always is the #1 spot in a 'creepy bosses in non-creepy games' list. Was always wondering what the fuzz was about, and now I got that answer. I am very happy to have reached the end of this LP. Giygas is simply amazing. Calling him one of the best final bosses in Video Game history is rightfully earned. The build-up is perfect, the soundtrack is incredible, Pokey as surprise villain does a brilliant job, Giygas is unsettling for all the right reasons and the way to beat him is beautifully done. Even in lets-play format which normally makes bosses much less personal and interesting, Giygas loses none of his presence or power. Can conclude, he's much more than just a silly swirly. Wouldn't have known if it wasn't for the adorkable doof that is Chuggaaconroy
"Silly swirly?" Giygas is a hurricane with a screaming face who is so powerful, he can destroy the universe. He also used to be a really powerful alien that lost his mind completely to his own power. He was DESTROYED by his own power, and now all that's left of him is an Eldritch Abomination. How isn't that scary?
I remember Camp Fangamer 2015, being in a massive room with hundreds of other people watching the Giygas battle played out, and the only thing we shouted was "Pray! Pray! Pray!" And we did. And it was working. It felt like the best church I had ever belonged to. They had named Ness after Satoru Iwata, who had just recently passed away at the time. Watching that scene of soul returning to body, and everybody shouting his name, it felt like he was there with us. I don't know all the ins and outs of the Mother games like a lot of people from that convention, but it is a game that has undoubtedly changed my life. Thanks for helping me relive those memories.
Oh man, so much to say, I'll at least save spoilers for as they come but get ready First, I always liked Ness' robot design. I really wish it could be a costume in Smash Second: Something i think people never get about timelines here: you are not outright fighting the giygas of the past: rather, the giygas of the present fled to the past, and you're chasing him Third: I'd say the pallette swap can't quite be helped: these are suppossed to be stronger versipns of giygas' army that we just happened to have already fought. Fourth: I love the fan theory Giygas is actually showing ninten's face, even if it might not really be the case Fifth: I really hope Pokey means business/stop exisiting gets into smash ultimate Fifth and a half: I also really want alien giygas in smash somehow, or at least giygas in some way. Sixth: my personal theory to Pokey is, he started as just another human chump to giygas, at least through fourisde. However, at some point, he starts getting more power; he's not scared of Ness like Giygas is because he's grown up next to ness for years. Giygas goes insane out of pressure and fear, but Pokey remains semi sane because he's not as inherently freaked out by Ness. He's the one who can start calling shots as giygas needs to stick to the devil's machine. In the end, he totally destroys giygas' sanity for his own personal gain. So while Giygas is still the main villain, he's so twisted that Porky is the strongest threat who can call the shots by the end. Seventh: I love how Flowey's speech basically ripped off Pokey's, and I don't care it is a wholesale ripoff. Eight: somehow, I've gotten just used enough to giygas' true form to not be scared at the sight, but the battle as a whole is still incredibly disturbing. And the fetus theory is bullcrap (what isn't is what happens if you look at it upside down: it looks like his alien head. Very likely to be unintentional but fun none-theless) Ninth: there's a detail between giygas' attacks in mother 1 and 2 I like: in mother 1, it's inexplicable because you know he's doing something to your mind with his incredible power, but you have no idea. in mother 2, you can't comprehend anything about Giygas, period. Tenth: Speaking of Flowey ripoffs, in general: calling out to help, and "Giygas's defense became unstable" sounds awfully familiar. And again, I love both the fights so much. eleventh: My theory about what giygas is meant to look like isn't much, just, this is pure power and evil, trying to manifest without a body that was too weak for such purposes. Twelth: no, he isn't directly based on the movie itoi saw necessarily. It's simply that a young itoi had a traumatic experience, incredibly disturbing to his developing mind, and giygas is meant to be that disturbance visualized and tried to bring about in the player. HE DAMN WELL SUCEEDED! Thirtheenth: I do kinda love the general pray phrase music, as it's actually the closest to music fourteenth: prayer absorbed by darkness. One last thing that got referenced. Fifthteenth: "all of us." Emile, that is beautiful, thank you so much Sixteenth: I love Giygas' defeat. no massive explosion, no disintegrate into dust. he's just so unstable and damaged, he blips out of the universe. All the while, your robot bodies break down, ending with that last AMAZING line to cap it off. Seventeenth: and for severe mood whiplash my bad joke time: I hope andonuts doesn't go insane and start murdering everyone, at least if something happened to our souls and timelines somehow. Eighteenth: the end world map theme: it really is beautiful, and a wonderful tune as you tour a saved, cured world. Ninteenth: ending off on a shot of home. Magnifiscent. Twentieth: we’re not done yet, and I’ll say it again, but Emile; this was a wonderful ride. Seeing how you evolved, seeing your love for the game, seeing my own love for the series and it’s surrounding fans lighted higher than ever before. It’s been a magical experience, and I cannot thank you enough for it.
Why is the fetus theory bullcrap? It kinda makes sense to me the way his final portrait is, those spots that make up the "nose" and "lips" seem waaaay to convieniently placed to just be a random patern that just happen to form the striking silhuette of a fetus as seen in ultrasound. It´s really disturbing thught, thought the villain as a whole is still really interesting.
After finally seeing this game and the final battle for myself, I can see where Undertale got its inspiration. A lot of this fight reminded me of the final battle of Undertale and it made me appreciate both the developers of this game and Toby Fox. Earthbound was the predecessor Undertale was born from, but Undertale still managed to be its own thing despite what ideas it borrowed from Earthbound. And not gonna lie, I started crying at the prayer scenes.
I have no idea why, but omega flowey is the only fictional monster whose sprite genuinely scares me, maybe it's because of the amalgamation of eyes and body parts
So few episodes compared the first time. But this time is much better. So many new memories, the holy fry pan, the sword of kings, hey it’s your dad. I’m glad we had this experience. Yes, we. Chuggaa, me, even you comment reader. I can’t wait to see what our next good time will be.
Honestly I think Giygas is supposed to be like a Rorschach test. You're meant to see a combination of things. I'm pretty sure the skull design is the part they started with and then Itoi just messed around with it to make it ambiguous but still in a way designed to remind of fear itself. The fetus however, I doubt was on purpose.
You know, ocassionally during this journey, I've entertained the idea in my head of what a potential Earthbound remake would look like. Give the story the treatment it deserves with character that can be more expressive than very basic 16-bit sprites walking around to simulate nervousness or anger. But then we hit Giygas and all I could think was "How would you even do this in a remake?" The answer is that you wouldn't. You couldn't. Not a 3D model based remake anyway. Giygas is something born and molded in the limitations of the 16-bit era, and it's easily one of the few things that I think is actually better for it. I don't think you could improve upon this at all. It takes some real skill to craft a final boss, on the SNES no less, that makes you honestly stop and wonder "wait... am I in a creepypasta? Is this even real?" A simple picture with filters placed over it, dialogue and perfectly composed music create an unsettling atmosphere that a lot of dedicated horror games nowadays have trouble matching. It's really something that's horrifyingly magical.
I disagree. 3D games also has effects. It would be literally same thing. The problem with modern horror games is that they are lazy. During PS1 era technical limitations forced creators to do clunky games what work best with the survival horror. But after graphics become better many good creators moved to more profitable genres (it is why people are so pissed about cancellation of last Silent Hill, and despite it action based nature Bloodborne prove that making good modern horror is still possible). If someone would do a remake he should also fuse it with first game. It wasn't needed back then, but nowadays they should flash out Gyigas backstory and Pokey motives and scale of involvement as he is true villain here. If you ask my largest issue would be that this franchise probably take place in same universe as Pokemon games. They recently become more transparent about that ;D
I think it would be possible, but really difficult and really trippy to create a 3D effect like Gigyas... but like imagine a floating disembodied voice talking to you as you pray, staring into the abyss? I don't think it'd be effective as a single voice though, because it'd be tied to an individual, in my head it's more of like a distorted group
The problem with an Earthbound remake especially rears its head in regular battles. The most obvious thought would be to add animations to the enemies, but you can't do that without slowing down battles. Given how the HP system works, slowing battles even by a little bit can turn deadly.
I thought for quite some time once about what a potential Mother series remake would be like, and I have a feeling all these games really would need for a remake is a new coat of paint, as in a 3D-style world, but the same battle system and backgrounds, so basically the entire “tapestry” gets a new coat of paint, and maybe some enemy sprite improvements. However, there is one area that I feel needs no changes from how it was on the NES, and that is the final area, or the Cave of the Past, whatever you call the area after the phase distorter. After all, you’re in the past, and it’d peak Earthbound humor to just use old-style graphics for the past as well as sprites to hammer it home. Plus, then the developers don’t have to try and remake Giygas, because honestly, I think he’s great as he is now. As for Mother 3, if it ever gets a rerelease on the switch, I don’t really know or care what changes they would have to make, though the Pigmasks would need some better spriting, but I feel like the only thing that I would want in a Mother 3 port is for the Battle Memory to utilize cutouts of the enemies, but like it is totally obvious that they’re cardboard cutouts and it’s not ever acknowledged. That’s it, that’s all I want.
When we were introduced to the multi bottle rocket, you claimed it could OHKO “even the final boss.” After seeing the fight, I’m going to need you back up that point.
Wow... Is it the end already? This redone let's play was as good as I thought it was going to be! Lets hope he re-does Mother 3 next! :D Congrats on another let's play finished Chuggaa!
Emile has already stated that he won't be redoing Mother 3, unless the game got a re-release. He would rather focus on newer content rather than continuously redoing older series.
The first time I beat this game, I decided to get a picture postcard at the shop because I never did before. After using it, all it said was “You felt sad and empty.” This text appears every time it’s used, no matter the time, but it was a really... strange time to see that.
Chuggaconroy, I honestly can’t thank you enough. This let’s play really taught me to not overlook old and weird-looking 90s games, because as you said, this game is timeless. You and this game have taught me about friendship and to keep going through with something. I never would have even thought about getting this game and the SNES Classic if it wasn’t for you. I just might save up my money and buy it! And I love how you know so much about not just this game, but all of the games you play. Sometimes, I even skip back to listen to what you said about an Actual Octopus or palette swaps. Long story short, I just want to thank you for this amazing LP. You truly deserve more subscribers. With all of my fervent praying, -A desk fan
I had to pause for a moment at Pokey's line "Mommy! Daddy! I'm so Frightened!" Because now I know the inspiration for Toby Fox's FLOWEY (probably parts of Omega Flowey too because of Pokey's little machine there) I mean it should've been obvious from the start but this is my first time see Earthbound, also I didn't expect the finale to come this soon like I thought I'd have to wait another 30 episodes but now I'm sad it's over/only bonus episodes left. Thanks Chuggaa for letting us new fans experience Earthbound without having to sit through 5-7 minute episodes! This has been a great series.
its INSPIRATED not a ripoff because here you kill only Undertale actually makes you to get to choose between kill or not kill but the only reason i'm not touching it is because the fanbase is cringey
I think what hits the most is that it wasn't really a massive battle that saved the world. It was an army of smaller fights. It was Ness befriending Frank. It was Jeff being such a good friend to Tony. It was Paula being a role model to the children at the preschool. It was Poo being admired by his people. It was the fight to stop Carpainter. It was the multiple times they helped out the Runaway Five. It was the battle against Master Belch to save Saturn Valley. It was their destroying the Mani Mani Statue. It was entering Stonehenge and freeing everyone captured there. Every person that Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo met and helped on their journey responded by praying, and giving their own hopes to counteract Giygas. Including us. Those kids touched peoples' hearts, and in their hour of need, those people gave back.
So I got this notification literally 30 seconds ago, and found a rush of nostalgia, then guilt. I remember watching the first, maybe 20 episodes while playing earthbound myself alongside his schedule, but then I stopped watching. I guess I just forgot about them. But now, as the last episode comes up, I remembered watching the first series, binge watching them intently, wishing that instead I could have an experience of waiting for the next episode and not watching older ones. But now, that chance is gone. So today, I’ll try to watch all of the episodes I missed to relive it. Thank you chuggaconroy, when watching this series you helped me remember about 5 years ago having a great experience seeing you play this wonderful game. I’ll miss this series, knowing that I had the chance to watch it when it was released, but I’ll come back to it every now and again.
Well, that was quite the final boss battle! I use to be super scared of Giygas and I'm still a bit spooked by him but at the same time I find him to be a very interesting villain and what he was based on and such.
Ness: So we are finally here, here to fight giygas, and we’re robots now so that’s pretty cool Paula: I miss my adorable body though Jeff: I don’t mind this Poo: Well whatever let’s get to giygas and end this *ness and crew gets to giygas* Pokey: Well I didn’t expect to see you here ne-, oh my god your robots Ness: Yeah it’s pretty coo- wait, what the hell you are doing Pokey: I am what you can call a manager for giygas, you know I’m jealous of you ness, you get to go on this grand adventure, make all these cool friends, and be a robot. And I’m stuck with my stupid family problems, but that what matter now cause everything will dies and nothing will matter anymore Ness: Oh, uh Pokey: No need to talk anymore buddy, let’s get this over with Ness: Yeah, let’s do this.....sorry Pokey Pokey: What? Ness: I mean Pokey: I said no need to talk idiot Ness: Ok whatever, let’s get this over with *few hours later* Ness: Holy crap, giygas is strong Paula: Dont worry guys I’m going to pray The three boys: NO *giygas is getting extremely weak* Jeff: IT WORKED Poo: It did Ness: FINALLY IT ACTUAL DID
Ness and Jeff told Poo what happened. "Jeff shot himself in the foot and then I rollin alpha'd everyone. The piles of barf were puking on each other and burping in each others faces, and no one was attacking so most of us stayed confused, or were crying meaning a normal attack would be less likely to happen. I was trying to run but kept slipping in their puke so I couldn't. The smell was so awful and I ended up thinking about my the clean smell of my bedsheets after mom had just washed them, and I started getting homesick along with the nausua..." "Ness had to fight Master Belch on his own, and all because Paula prayed twice." *Paula appears* "I found a psi caramel in a present! Let's pray for more good luck!" "No! I mean, uh, we don't get luckier when you pray, the best we can get is a a small chance of PP restore if we already have luck on our side."
>Named the player "All of us"
Emile you adorable nerd.
Based on the text box in Tenda Village, he had the name as "We" initially. I wonder if that was intentional, or if he changed his mind.
That's what he was hiding? It shows the player name at the end for this? I thought it was part of the game. Emile that was insanely clever.
That's really sweet! Awww!
Oh wow, I didn't even catch that.
viper32153 last time he played this he named the player “ninten” as in the first mother protagonist
@Roberto del Fuego
Except when you know first game, then you know that Gyigas is far from being evil himself. He in fact was one of largest victims in that story.
The way I interpreted it is that Ness beating Frank turned his life around from one of crime to one that was more positive, which is why he’s seen in the hamburger shop.

@@TheRezro what is his story?
It's memories like this that make Earthbound on of my favorite games of all time!

mads_in_zero Imagine that actually happened LOL.
Random Passerby: "Oh hey, look! It's that guy... Gus!"
Gus: "Hey dudes! You wouldn't believe the night I had."
Pokey: "..."
And then he goes back to being giegue.
@GhostsKuriboh That would be the quickest final boss ever
He then later went on to become Mewtwo.

A lot of people like to say, "I found a huge plot-hole! The 8 melodies never did anything!"
Ever wonder how Paula was able to speed her prayer to everyone on Earth? Remember how Ness, learning all 8 melodies, united his mind with Earth? I like to think that Paula channeled her prayers through Ness, whose mind is connected with all of Earth. That, plus they wouldn't have met all those people if it wasn't for their quest. It's about the journey, not the destination.
Plus it make more sense if someone did play first game.
So Ness was a psychic amplifier, basically? Makes enough sense to me.
Not to mention, the eight melodies were playing during the scene with Ness's family!
Glorious Revenant you get that from MatPat?
323starlight the last part kinda sounds like what he said in his Earthbound video, from what I remember. Though I think since Giygas is based on what Itoi thought was a rape scene in a movie, it's clear to me that Giygas symbolizes loss of innocence. And once you get past the fact that the world isn't the greatest place, you've truly grown, I think.
Sorry to break the tention, but this makes me think of chuggaa's lost innocence
That could very well be.
@@gloriousrevenant9520 nice theory but it wasnt a rape scene, it was a scene of a dismembering of a woman.
It's really sad what happened to Giegue when he became Giygas.
i'd like to think some parts of his personality as giegue was being referenced there. it was just sadly lost in translation.
I like to think that at this stage all he really wants is his mother Maria from Mother 1.
Emile voice acting Pokey was on point. A very solid mix of making him sound menacing and simultaneously immature and bratty.

WolfLink0370 and plus cruel for people in the late 90s and early 2000s who had no idea if they would have a real Earthbound copy
There were other checks before this, little Timmy who just bought a pirated copy by mistake would never have gotten to start the game.
Nathan Wright I see then how did the pirates discover the other checks?
Pirated games at the time tended to use big generic cartridges, and so the game would check if the cartridge it was on was bigger than it should be, and just show a screen reminding you that piracy is bad instead of loading the game. You could get past this by changing the game's code, but the game could find out you did this and instead of throwing you back out, would just fuck with you until the devil's machine opened, then delete your saves.
Nathan Wright interesting
I find Pokey more terrifying than Giygas. He was Ness’s childhood friend, and throughout the course of the story, Ness and you, the player, witness Porky slowly become a fighter for Giygas until you fight Giygas himself. Pokey constantly ridicules you on so many different things. He’s practically making all the decisions for Giygas. He even lives beyond Giygas’s defeat. Then you learn what he’s done in Mother 3.
Yeah
Pokey was more dangerous because he was coherent in earthbound. He was just a kid with a crappy life that was given a taste of evil and morphed into his own.
@Xx_ShadowSlayer_xX
Because despite what most people think Gyigas isn't strictly evil.
Xx_ShadowSlayer_xX Is Mother 3 the one with Lucas?

Lol
That would throw me off Mega time
Three years late, but i just finished my first playthrough of Earthbound and i got the phone call in the post-credits scene where Picky knocks on the door. It was hilarious, especially since i played it while following along with this series.
I love how its the prayer to Ness's mom that fatally wounds Giygas (going off the soundtrack names for each part Giygas's battle)
… its pretty much a loop around back to mother 1, with Giygas being extremely hurt by the power of the love between a mother and child.
You know, I never thought about like that.
I can't believe I'm STILL learning new things about Earthbound!
So from everything I've seen and heard about Mother, was Earthbound basically just a remake or retelling?
Plus the music changes to the 8 melodies theme when Ness's mom starts praying. This game is so good...
That was the track playing at 30:02 right?
Yes the track at 30:02 that plays for the prayer with Ness's mom, is the Eight Melodies.
It's the same melodies that you collect in the sound stone to complete the game, and is a major plot point in Mother 1/earthbound beginnings, and is what you learn to complete that game as well.

@@ultimateshadow7522 sad you should have played it without watching this lets play
@@ultimateshadow7522 he named his player "all of us" to make that scene, normally it would show your name
I'm sorry.
Well in one of the Japanese ads for Earthbound, the narrator called Giygas "a dark heart". So it works kinda.

Giygas has haunted the entire world for days but we need to keep praying
Yeah so, I did a bit of research on TV Tropes, and apparently, Giygas sprang right out of the developer’s nightmares. And seeing it now...
I believe it.
Heracross X just listen to the unused giygas theme from mother3 , its terrifying
A murder scene actually
That was a lot of bright flashing lights.
I like that little acknowledgement of Paula being the real hero of the story.

That word is spelled "presence" by the way, not "presents" lol. Took me a sec to figure out what the hell you were talking about.
So... Can we kill him with the Love love stick? Like how Kirby kill dark matter with it, the weapon created by showing others kindness? Man, who knows Kirby and Earthbound have something similar

Wall of text incoming: (Not that exciting, but kinda something emotional for me)
I remember I was dating someone for 4 years.

That sounds...irreplaceable. I can imagine myself being in your shoes, just...still, after whole ordeal.
To be honest as great as this game is, I like final of first game more.. Gyigas is dramatic villain.
Yeah I regret beating him during night, I was like, "Well who really needs sleep actually".
I swear, when he said “And it knows when your scared” sent SERIOUS chills down my spine. Well played, sir.

Luigi Is The Best my first LP was Super Paper Mario personally, I was so impressed by the quality of his videos that in turned into my own fascination for studying video games and learning all their is about each game 100%, even if I couldn’t play it myself
Ohhh, you named the Player character "All Of Us"! That's why you never showed the audience
Whatever dude
Sentimental or not I agree. Been watching since the Mother 3 playthrough and I still pop in for some lps all these years later.
You talk like you sit at the table with him and pay his bills...
@@witchnessp Ffs just let him be positive about the man....
@@yellowpower3755 sorry but that middle section of him talking about Emile wasn't positive and just plain uncomfortable and rude. "All of us kept praying."
That was really sweet and I appreciate that detail so much.
Now get ready for the 20 bonus videos lol, but honestly great series, it got me into EarthBound
that will randomly appear over several years
If you know Emile, you know he is never getting around to those bonus videos.
You act like he makes bonus videos

If you're reading this near the beginning of the video, and are prone to seizures or any other type of epilepsy, I would recommend skipping the Giygas fight, as the later parts contain bright flashing lights. If somebody could provide specific timestamps, that would be great.
There is blurry frame transitions to prevent the seizures.
Is that real thing or people mad up things like usual?
The game wasn't allowed any official rereleases from Nintendo until they fixed all the seizure-inducing moments. And Chuggaa is playing the Wii U rerelease, so I can safely assume it's real.
@@tatltails3923 No, he's playing the SNES Classic.
Little late giygas is 16:04-34:22
Can’t believe that ten years ago this took almost 100 videos
10 years ago videos had an 11 minute time limit

And with way less trivia and game knowledge!
Heh yeah...
Amazing what a time limit can do...
Dear Chuggaaconroy,
I can confidently say that you have thoroughly changed my mind about EarthBound.
From an old fan,
Vernaiko (Will)
That's very nice to hear!
I have a head cannon that Giygas saying “I feel good” is him feeling pain, but he’s happy to at least feel something
Emile-
You should have talked about the Anti-piracy measure Nintendo creates in this battle.
If anyone doesn’t know what this, it takes place when Pokey states “you will be just another meal to him.” and before the next Phase the game will freeze and the check will happen, then the games resets, if the check fails, all your save data will be wiped completely!
That's my secret ability *PK THIS IS ILLEGAL*
So in the pirated version, instead of the prayers, YOU were absorbed by the darkness!
It’s worth noting that the anti-piracy check is multi-tiered. If I remember correctly, the first check it does is before you start playing and it gives you an on-screen warning. Then it starts spawning enemies at a much higher rate than usual, then the Giygas thing happens.
I feel like this'll be in the Epilogue Episode.
It's not that the game freezes, checks then resets. The game checks after you exit out of Pokey's dialogue box during that scene, then freezes. You have to hard-reset the game yourself; your save data is still completely wiped, though.
32:56 You cheeky bastard. ...This is why we love you.
why All of Us love you
Yup. :D
Especially having your player name pop up at the end to deliver the mortal blow to Giygas in prayer is... incredible.
Especially when you know full story.. I personally prefer first game final because of that.
You mention some people say the glass makes pokey's skin seem blue, but in the battle screen, you can see the glass doesn't alter the backgrounds color. Pokey's skin is blue.
which is a lot darker when you realize the only other creatures with that shade of skin color are the undead.
And the new age retro hippie, the old party guy and the.. Woman thing on the overworld
He is a cyborg. It is why he is still alive in Mother 3.
@@TheRezro No, hes still alive there because giygas made him immortal?
@Skarne Canius
As I said.. though Pokey largely did that to himself.
The first Mother game? Earthbound Beginnings?

Now was I the only one who thought that the repeating pattern of faces in pain that represents Giygus looked like it was in pain when it was moving slow but as the fight progressed and the pattern moved faster it looked like a smiling face?
Yeah
this just got even more creepier
Let’s not forget about the fetus theory
this channel probably has the best community ever now everybody likes to say that about their favourite channel but jeez who doesn't like the kindness of Emile and his fans including me wanted to see the first lp but the fact that it was recorded in 2008 turned me a little down plus not to be rude but a youtuber's first lp isn't very good and with this I can expirience the true love that Emile has for the series
might I add that Emile also has the super power of convensing people that some game series that may sound stupid at first are actually pretty cool on the day of my birthday I plan to buy splatoon 2 a game that I thought was stupid because I didn't like first or third person shooters, xenoblade chronicles is another one I saw his lp and now have the second game with over 200 hours played in less than a year I trully thank Emile for introducing me to these great game series
Just yes.
I never realized how amazing pokey is as an antagonist until you gave him that voice. Just wow.
Pokey really deserves what he got in Mother 3, he is an awful person altogether, all he did was out of selfishness, he even took it to a point where he guided someone to death because he wanted to beat Ness... That's pityful
Well, fact that he is main villain should be not obvious after all..
He does it good but I think Shadejak VA has the best impression
Sounds kind of like Yuri Lowenthal to me...
Every now and then he just nails it. His Girahim from Skyward Sword was also amazing.
He did fantastic in Mother 3
Just a little bit whiny, just a little bit smug.
"It understands.... When you're scared"
*THEMS SOME MIGHTY GOOSEBUMPS*
That monologue was an amazing prelude to the final boss. Couldn't have done it any better.
All of us kept praying.
Simply beautiful Emile. So glad you hid that from us.
So... He's basicly dark matter before dark matter was a thing?
That seems to be a recurring theme in the Mother series. Giygas' weakness is the one thing he couldn't understand: Love.
@jenna brendler
You clearly didn't plaid first game, didn't you? The real reason is even more sad!
@Lord God
The opposite.. this lullaby is something what his human mother sing before she died, and his memory were erased so he would fulfill his designated role as invasion commander. Fact that he understand love is what destroy him mentally on the first place, when he was forced to kill his nephew Ninten, and he wasn't even aware of that until he start singing so he was taken off guard. Ness in fact bring him back to sanity after Pokey just exploit his power.
Me: Hey, this game is awesom- *Sees Giygas*
Childhood: So long!
to anyone with Epilepsy i recommend you be careful when Emile reaches the Giygas fight
just a fair warning take care
Precisely why Nintendo added so much blur in the SNES Classic Edition. Not sure how effective that is tho hahaha.
I don't think i have epilepsy, i can just get nauseous with flashing lights, like one time we went to this Christmas thing and they had flashing lights all along the floor, walls and ceilings going off at different times, my family said i suddenly went extremely pale, i started wobbling and almost falling over, and i remember suddenly my vision going black and feeling like i was gonna pass out, and right now i feel like i wanna throw up and i have a headache, kinda wish i read your comment before the video as damn, that was a bit severe with the flashing and stuff XD
yeah thats normal to happen sometimes but i was just warning the few people that had it because it did seem a little too flashy near the end
Dylon Austin imagine playing on a crt with the lights off ughhh

This is my theory on the death of Geigue, & the birth of Giygas.
Mother 1 Spoilers ahead:
Maria & George are kidnapped to raise Geigue.
It is a poor fan-fiction 0_0
First of all Gyigas/Gigue is translation thing.
TheRezro it technically is but eh. your opinion
If you plaid first game he is even better :D
"Silly swirly?" Giygas is a hurricane with a screaming face who is so powerful, he can destroy the universe. He also used to be a really powerful alien that lost his mind completely to his own power. He was DESTROYED by his own power, and now all that's left of him is an Eldritch Abomination. How isn't that scary?
“All of us kept praying.”
Man, that’s beautiful.
Fun fact: As Chuggaa said, the anti-piracy measure in EarthBound just spawns a whole hell of a lot of enemies
The game also crashes and deletes your save when you reach Giygas and Pokey.
@@thebiolibrary5572 it happens when pokey turns off the devils machine, basically turning off the machine running the fake copy.
@@ajdogz5088 ah, that’s a good joke. Pokey does turn off the “devil’s machine” by doing so, so if that’s the truth, props to the Earthbound devs.
*All of us kept praying.*
Nice, the most terrifying thing in most video games right in October!
I just realized lol
Oh man, so much to say, I'll at least save spoilers for as they come but get ready
First, I always liked Ness' robot design. I really wish it could be a costume in Smash
Second: Something i think people never get about timelines here: you are not outright fighting the giygas of the past: rather, the giygas of the present fled to the past, and you're chasing him
Third: I'd say the pallette swap can't quite be helped: these are suppossed to be stronger versipns of giygas' army that we just happened to have already fought.
Fourth: I love the fan theory Giygas is actually showing ninten's face, even if it might not really be the case
Fifth: I really hope Pokey means business/stop exisiting gets into smash ultimate
Fifth and a half: I also really want alien giygas in smash somehow, or at least giygas in some way.
Very likely to be unintentional but fun none-theless)
Ninth: there's a detail between giygas' attacks in mother 1 and 2 I like: in mother 1, it's inexplicable because you know he's doing something to your mind with his incredible power, but you have no idea. in mother 2, you can't comprehend anything about Giygas, period.
Thirtheenth: I do kinda love the general pray phrase music, as it's actually the closest to music
fourteenth: prayer absorbed by darkness. One last thing that got referenced.
Fifthteenth: "all of us." Emile, that is beautiful, thank you so much
Sixteenth: I love Giygas' defeat. no massive explosion, no disintegrate into dust. he's just so unstable and damaged, he blips out of the universe.
Earthbound is similar to undertale because Toby fox is a fan sorry if you knew that
KitKat wait that's probably taken I know, it’s just as a mega fan, I always get really excited when I see the origin.
This was beautiful man.
P.S I hope he shows the bike thing in Deep Darkness.
You should create a slab and make the 20th amendments
@@Fierywell i remember being so scared of the moving eyes :(
I beat Giygas a few weeks ago, on the final turn, he killed Poo with Flash. So I read the ending dialogue with the *SOMEONE'S DEAD* color.
"A young woman in Dalaam woke up from a dream in which Prince Poo died..." That dream became reality.
Yup. basically. Though his base form was still based on his original body.
Yeah, I never really saw the fetus, I see a deformed skull with no jaw
@But It's Poorly Animated
It is deliberate combination of few disturbing images.
So this is how the final battle ends...
I guess you can call it *pray* to win!
You know, ocassionally during this journey, I've entertained the idea in my head of what a potential Earthbound remake would look like. Give the story the treatment it deserves with character that can be more expressive than very basic 16-bit sprites walking around to simulate nervousness or anger.
But then we hit Giygas and all I could think was "How would you even do this in a remake?"
The answer is that you wouldn't.
Well there goes my theory on using the links awakening remake artstyle for earthbound remake... I have no idea how giygas would work with that look
Watch speedruns its insane how much damage they do
i'm gonna guess what he meant is that in the game files you probably could OHKO Giygas, you just can't because of the allmighty P l o t A r m o r
He means probably the first stage of him since that does have a fixed health unlike the 2nd stage
Bkzander yeah, that might be right.
Hester Franks I don’t know, 20,000-25,000 damage is a lot.
Wow... Is it the end already?
This redone let's play was as good as I thought it was going to be!
Lets hope he re-does Mother 3 next! :D
Congrats on another let's play finished Chuggaa!
Emile has already stated that he won't be redoing Mother 3, unless the game got a re-release. He would rather focus on newer content rather than continuously redoing older series.
@djfuller
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ A fan can hope.
Besides, Mother 3 as a let's play has held up better than a lot of his other ones. If I could pick for a redo, it would be Mother 1
you can't just *redo* hillary duff on a stick. you really can't.
xD
The motion blur on the last phase of Giygas is insane, I can’t believe how much flashing light is used for that
The first time I beat this game, I decided to get a picture postcard at the shop because I never did before. After using it, all it said was “You felt sad and empty.”
This text appears every time it’s used, no matter the time, but it was a really... strange time to see that.
Do you remember how long this series was 10 years ago when TH-cam videos could barely pass 10 minutes?
“I’m a brave boy” “NOT BRAVE ENOUGH FOR THIS”
Chuggaconroy, I honestly can’t thank you enough.
With all of my fervent praying,

This has been a great series.
undertale is a ripoff of this game, it's trash
Aye. Besides that one SS hate part.
its INSPIRATED not a ripoff because here you kill only Undertale actually makes you to get to choose between kill or not kill but the only reason i'm not touching it is because the fanbase is cringey
Giygas more like Byegas....i'll leave now.
Leave this forbidden place mortal!
You mean....
*DIEGAS!?!?*
Buddy Free yeah
He let out a great big Sighgas
Well, that was quite the final boss battle! I use to be super scared of Giygas and I'm still a bit spooked by him but at the same time I find him to be a very interesting villain and what he was based on and such.
Ness: So we are finally here, here to fight giygas, and we’re robots now so that’s pretty cool
Paula: I miss my adorable body though
Jeff: I don’t mind this
Poo: Well whatever let’s get to giygas and end this
*ness and crew gets to giygas*
Pokey: Well I didn’t expect to see you here ne-, oh my god your robots
Ness: Yeah it’s pretty coo- wait, what the hell you are doing
Pokey: I am what you can call a manager for giygas, you know I’m jealous of you ness, you get to go on this grand adventure, make all these cool friends, and be a robot. And I’m stuck with my stupid family problems, but that what matter now cause everything will dies and nothing will matter anymore
Ness: Oh, uh
Pokey: No need to talk anymore buddy, let’s get this over with
Ness: Yeah, let’s do this.....sorry Pokey
Pokey: What?
Ness: I mean
Pokey: I said no need to talk idiot
Ness: Ok whatever, let’s get this over with
*few hours later*
Ness: Holy crap, giygas is strong
Paula: Dont worry guys I’m going to pray
The three boys: NO
*giygas is getting extremely weak*
Jeff: IT WORKED
Poo: It did
Ness: FINALLY IT ACTUAL DID
These snippets are one of my favorite parts about this series
I like how the guys had a mass "Oh crap!" when Paula decided to pray.Ness and Jeff should especially feel this way after a certain past incident...
*belch's base Vietnam flashback-* wait why'd poo freak out he wasnt there
Pokey the tsundere
Can't believe how fast this Lp has gone and went.

Did you wheeze while interpreting Pokey's speech? I loved that!
Foreshadowing of what going to happen
oh my lord ITS TIME! DESTROY GIYGAS! >:D
"dont treat me like this when its a 75%- .... what is this fire emblem?"
HE KNOWS THE STRUGGLE!
Crit Rate is rolled first. /s
@@MasacoMike
nO IT'S NoT!!!!!!111
(i know that you're making a joke i saw the /s)
Had it not been for the laws of /s, I would have berated you.
Also you don't know the true struggle until you miss a 99%
Replace Ness and Healing γ with Supernova and Fire Blast, and you basically have a summary of his Platinum let's play in that one scene.
75%crit fails for you
1%crit succeeds for enemy

Ness...
Paula...
Jeff...

I wish you luck...
