I saw this in 1997. It was the full original cast with one exception (Mimi). I can't overestimate the effect it had on me. It was an emotionally transformative moment for me and the most profound entertainment experience I've have had. There isn't a price I wouldn't pay to relive it
God-awful singing I heard on the Rent “Live” special tonight made me miss this so bad. I wish they would always do one live recording of the original broadway cast, for every show, for those of us that aren’t able to get out to see them, and for everyone who loves musicals and would like to re-watch them from the comfort of their homes. Rent was so magical and neither the movie version nor the live version tonight let it shine as bright as it should.
Rachel you’re definitely in the vast majority to say the movie wasn’t all that great. The movie was so good it had elements that the broadway version didn’t

They used almost all of the same actors. However, Tracie Thoms took over for Fredi Walker for the role of Joanne and Rosario Dawson took over for Daphne Rubin-Vega for the role of Mimi. Idina Menzel (Maureen), Anthony Rapp (Mark), Adam Pascal (Roger), Taye Diggs (Benny), Jesse L. Martin (Collins), and Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Angel) were all in the original cast and the movie.
IMO Daphne is still best Mimi when it comes to energy and dancing. Most Mimis after her very stiff during out tonight that it hard buy them being strippers.
Does anyone know where I can watch a full version of Rent 1996 broadway show with Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Jesse L Martin as Angel and Collins. I’ve looked everywhere but there is one but the quality is bad unfortunately. Any suggestions would be great :)
jonathan casted her exactly for her voice. she's the PERFECT mimi. she embodies her personality and energy so well and has a similar background to mimi. the more invested in rent you become the more you realise daphne is amazing and her voice is so unique and she's very talented (:
Yeah, you're not alone. I don't hate it, but there are a thousand better singers who have played the part just as well. Her voice suits the part, and she's a great actress, but I just don't like her voice much.

I actually enjoyed the movie. Definitely better than the fox live but I agree nothing will ever beat the original cast and production.
