If you own a 308 GTi (as I do) you know it puts a smile on your face especially when you hit the magic sports button! Absolute beast considering its only a 1.6 under the bonnet

Yes, it seems to pull stronger from 170kph onwards. The I30N engine dies after 200kph. The 308gti is so underrated.
I am still very pleased with my car, touch wood and fingers crossed it has been nothing but efficient and reliable for over a year of ownership now. It's a fun car to own, fully aware there are bigger and better beasts out there but them 250 horses are more than adequate to have under your foot!@@crocoman776

Two amazing cars that people can appreciate it for what it is other than the badge on them. Respect to those that like it for as they see it.
I don’t dislike either. Both cars look better in person. While the interior and infotainment area looks more interesting in the i30n. The quality is still there in the 308. It’s just more down to if you like the minimalistic look. Some say that’s boring. But actually it’ll age better.
I own a 308 gti. And I’ll still watch videos solely of the i30n because I like it, but I don’t regret my choice. I find reasons to go in my 308 gti and take the long way home. Turn my music up and put my foot down and drive it like no one can take me.

The sound of the i30N is incredible. The loudness in Germany for both cars:
i30N - 109 dB
308 GTi - 76 dB
But the quality in the interior is better in the GTi. The exterior optics depends on the person. For me it's definitely the GTi. It looks understated and flies under the radar. Important for me if I want to drive this car for a longer period.

Hyundai should have used a shorter gear ratio. Loses too much in acceleration. Looks like they are worried about fuel economy 🙄🙄
5th gear is almost as long as Peugeot's 6th. That's why it struggles to accelerate above 200km/h. Peugeot's engine-gear pack is more balanced.
Actually, it's the opposite, the 6th gear ratio on the hyundai is 0,854:1 whereas the 308 one is 0,75:1
The acceleration of the 308 is just nasty.

Both are lovely cars, Peugeot is killing it with their design. Stunning cars they are pushing out lately.
Hyundai looks awesome, and if their reputation is anything to go by, it's going to be a reliable car too! The Interior of the 308 could be much better though, it looks like it is missing a lot of buttons. Not being able to change the heat without tapping on that screen isn't all that great. Doing that while driving doesn't seem very safe.
The companies need to understand the interior and exterior design is also very important!

WELL PERSONALLY i love N division cars from hyundai such as Veloster N,i30N, i30N fastback...etc. but the other brands are attractive too. it’s so nice that we have lots of options to consider xD

True, good job. But that's probably due to a larger turbo and aggressive tuning. The i30N is a platform car and in the next release it will get a performance upgrade to push well beyond 300hp. That being said, the 308 is a Peugeot so good luck with the reliability.

I own a i30n Performance with 109db (the newer ones have 91db)...and I have to say that I love this car! It is the perfect choice for a purist...however, I have to say that the Peugeot is incredibly good looking and that it drives incredibly as well! At the end of the day I'd still go with the Hyundai though!

Sport does nothing in the 308 GTi apart from generate false engine noise through the speakers which sounds garbage, add a red glow to the instruments so you can't see the red line on the rev counter and that's it. It's no faster in sport than normal mode.
Paul Jones you and 6 other people clearly haven’t driven the car. Although the sport mode doesn’t give more power it certainly does change the throttle response. I definitely like the way the car accelerates better under sport mode. With it off it doesn’t feel like it wants to be pushed and this it boosts differently.

Peugeot has forged internals insane brakes and rotors and a torsen differenal 270hp with 266whp so not much of a lost and all from a 1.6 that's pretty damn good ...Hyundai looks like a rush job few pops and farts plastic fantastic interior gearbox well ..Hyundai they will get there one day maybe with the dct coming soon might see a improvement but would definitely buy the Peugeot it's got that sleeper factor a hidden beast that will leave some car owners with the wtf just happen look on there face anyway but each to there own I guess.
Overall Hyundai is my choice, better looks better sound, looks solid, and have right tacho xD

I think the chassis can't cope with it. There's a reason they haven't gone that way.
George Mavrides sorry but thats utter garbage, the chassis was well able for the 500bhp 308 Hybrid R. Peugeot hasn't got a 2.0 T petrol in its line up and it makes zero economic sense to develop one now, just to use in a couple of niche versions. Instead they developed the 1.6 T petrol with BMW which is used in a huge amount of different cars in both the PSA and BMW groups.

@@vladen14 my friend in a normal I30 and me a GTi. The interior quality and finish has nothing to do with it, yet mine is based on a 2013 model.
308 is faster, but prefer the interior look & the sound of the i30. I never will drive these flat out, so overall I’d prefer the experience of the i30. 308 interior, whilst quality, looks so dated.
Peugeot is more sexy
The i30 N is brutal and has great acceleration.
The 308 GTi though is more mature.
Closer to CUPRA and RenaultSport.

I own the gti, if you can get on with the driving position there isn't a hatch on the market that matches it for drivability. It's understated as well which (if like me) you want to get unnoticed 99% of the time is very satisfying.
A resonator delete solves the very quiet exhaust note. Infotainment in phase 1 and 2 isn't brilliant but especially phase 1 cars, it can be solved however with an upgrade.
The brakes whilst absolutely brilliant in terms of performance need a stainless steel piston upgrade otherwise they will fail and you'll need discs and pads (£1500) as well as new pistons.
All in all very capable, practical and enjoyable motor.

Yeah there's a slight problem with hyundai launch control, it makes the car jump and stall if you use it, no matter the driver, unless you dump the clutch and take of with wheelspin this will happen to you everytime you use launch control.
The launch control isn't very good either. I do 0-100 km/h faster without launch control than with.

The Peugeot is great...but no question I'd take the Hyundai if comparing these two. Prefer the Hyundai's simple and clean exterior, classic interior (tach right in front of steering wheel), sound. Even the handling seemed better on the Hyundai (much less bumpy ride when at speed). I'd bet the Hyundai is more reliable over the longer run too.. Both great little pocket rockets...
I love my bouncy gti. It’s twitchy. But if can understand those that don’t like that. I just like excitement.

Quite good. Both sadly destroyed by the likes of the BMW M140i though.
Isn't that the one (the BMW) in which Clarkson almost died when he tried top speed on a rainy day ? Very good choice indeed, the Earth will be lighter without you.
Ha. So, I did a fair bit more digging on the i30 N's speed, and where it counts (for me at least), it's very similar to the M140; off the line RWD beats FWD, but from
- 25-60mph they're 0.2s different - basically nothing; achieved by putting the i30 N in 2nd gear only.
- 70-140kmh there's 0.7s compared to the auto, but the i30 N's gear change takes say 0.3/4s.
It's after about 70mph that the extra bhp of the M140 really makes a difference but unless one voids the Beemer warranty on a track or goes to Germany they won't really use it.
So in other words, I think I was wrong on this one. On being wrong though..! Firstly, the Earth doesn't change weight when things die: the atoms are still around; secondly I wouldn't die anyway because if I had a BMW it would have probably broken down! So nerr!! :D
JK. Anyways on the back of doing a lot of research, I bought an i30 N :)

Steve Lane I’m like your post. But no way in a million years will the i30n be close to a m140i. It’s left it before it’s even got to 60mph, 4.8 seconds vs 6.1. The race is over the moment the m140i launches. Where ever you got those figures, it doesn’t show the reality.

Hilariously, the figures are taken from me measuring acceleration times of both cars in TH-cam videos... saddo! :D I did that across a number of videos so I was probably not far off, but there's definitely some scope for error in the videos, as well as the fact that it was me playing the videos at 1/4 speed several times and using a stopwatch!
I was also slightly cherry picking -albeit it's good real world speed range - as no doubt the M140i is miles faster overall, as you say. 0-25 is RWD vs FWD so no comparison, and after 60 the extra horsepower really shows. The 25-60 time is helped by no traction issues and no gear change needed!
To add, I've done 0-60 in 5.3s in my i30N, helped by the lack of need to get into 3rd gear.
But yeah, I'm not saying they're close overall. The M140i is a pocket rocket.

In this logic Peugeot's best hot hatch ever (205 GTI) couldn't possibly have been any good and the Golf GTi Mk would have probably been shit as well since neither Peugeot or VW had made performance hatches before...damn, VW only made beatles and hippie vans prior to the GTi. SOunds a lot like Hyundai. When did Peugeot last take part in the WRC? They haven't been in there since 2005. Hyundai on the other hand is there with 2 riders in the top 5 for a few years now. I'd say their motorsport relevance today is bigger than Peugeot's.
The 308 is a great car, but 'heritage' doesn't make up for the small flaws it has. Long gearshift, bad sound, ... and before Damien G (the Frenchy defending the French car - shouvinism has never been lacked in france) goes of saying those can be fixed...the electronic handbrake can not. On a WRC / TRC inspired car that is just a big nono.
TheDudeInTheRedHotHatch sorry but Peugeot have won the Dakar rally, the world's toughest the last 3 years in a row, and currently winning the world rally cross with Sebastian loeb! Loeb also smashed the world record at pikes peak in a Peugeot 208 T16.

The 308 gti has won all tests Ive seen including this and with a 1.6 turbo. As far as wrc goes, Peugeot aren't in it but would be dominating it if they were, thats just a fact, like they did when they were competing in it, and like they dominate every other motor sport they compete in at the moment. They were letting their sister company Citroen compete in the wrc for years solely on budgeting for two teams being too expensive, and look how dominant Citroen were. Citroen and loeb were the greatest team that will ever be in wrc. And there's no denying it either.
