His face lit up when he was asked about Jesus. I think his answer was meant to be relatable to the average warped tour audience who may or may not be Christian. Plus it's hard to put how you feel about Jesus in a sound byte. Let's cut him some slack.
@Random dude Sorry random dude but the existence of Jesus as accepted as history whether his divinity is true or not. Personally, I believe saying the Bible is supposed to be more of a moral compass is a cop out for most people that say it than an honestly held opinion.
Yeah like he's (so far) not turned out to be extreme with his beliefs, and if you're a fan of this band you can't NOT know their religious base. I no longer believe but I still find a lot of strength and solace in the messages they sing.
It’s because of petty nonsense like that why I couldn’t deal with being raised in the church. His response was honest and down to earth, and wasn’t the usual canned lines like “the alpha and omega”, “the almighty”, “our redeemer”, etc.
This guy handled the interview like a champ. Most interviews ask what the sound of the new album will be. But to do an interview involving religion depression ect and handle it well. Props to you man.
The members of Relient K are passionate about music. They are also passionate about their Faith. They are from my home town and I graduated with them. They always have had wonderfully strong faith in Christ. But they are MUSICIANS not pastors. Matt is such a great songwriter and lyricist. Matt Hoopes seems super down to earth and loved his comments here. Listening to Two Lefts Don't Make a Right was one of the points that made me decide to make music. And all these years later still love their tunes.
I think people might be reading into the Matt responses too much. Their songs speak for themselves and clearly demonstrate what they believe. They seemed to just be trying to answer the question in a way to relate to more people, and get them thinking.
Love the comments guys. We did not edit anything short. We are a Christian-based media group, so we ask all kinds of bands about Jesus. But we did not tell them that going into the interview. So Matt's "weak" answer (as many have described) could have been his attempt to not upset us, perhaps thinking we were anti-God or trying to start an argument. But that was our intent. WE give any band an equal opportunity to claim Christ. Watch our interview with Austin from Of Mice & Men!!!
I never comment on videos, but I have to say, in Matt's defense, the question was "what is your perception of Jesus' and, not for nothing, the "awkwardness" in Matt's answer probably has a lot to do with the hypostatic union being a MYSTERY of faith. It's not something you can easily put into words and that's why Matt is so amazing for what he does. I am currently getting my Master's degree in Theology and this kid is right up there in my book with great Christian theologians for his charisms

In order to work through depression and other mental illnesses, there is a matter of will that one must have to work through it. That's why I'm finally able to be free of medication. And, yes, faith is a struggle, especially in our culture. I've kept my faith.
Wow at everyone who is dissing Matt for his answer. Judging him for what he said in one interview? Saying you're ashamed of him? Throwing him under the bus for not giving the CORRECT Christian answer? Should he have spoken in tongues and prayed for the interviewer? O_o All the things he listed are true anyway: Jesus does give good advice to live life, He IS everything, He IS the coolest person to hang around with, and if we listened to Jesus we would find ourselves happier than we are.
What Matt Hoopes said was good: "you have to make a decision: was it true or not? You can't just say he was a good dude." Matt Thiessen was kind of wishy washy in his answer, It seems like he's not so assured now. If this is true it's sad to listen to their early songs like 'What have you been doing lately', because future Matt T would be the one he was singing it to. I know it doesn't involve me directly, but as a fan you want to be able to look up to your favourite artists.
Yeah dude, I've been finding to my dissapointement that a lot of the singers I thought were Christians almost seem to have lost their faith. But I saw Relient K last year live and Matt T still seemed to be a Christian. I don't know, but I agree with what you're saying, I wonder if they ever play that song anymore...
But isn't that what most evangelical preachers do? Religion is all about money these days.. Therefore with music, if you like a song listen to it. Who cares of its origins if you enjoy it 😊
Everyone go look up C.S. Lewis's "Liar, Lunatic, Lord" argument. That's what I think Matt is referencing. He's saying that if Jesus is who He says He is, then it's everything. If not, He's either a liar or a lunatic. He's saying that there's no gray area. As a man who's seen Relient K live multiple times and met members of the band, I'd say that Matt isn't a very eloquent speaker. People need to stop judging and trust that the Lord knows Matt's heart.
You know what I totally agree with you! While I love Relient K and their music, I do feel like they should all be much more open about their faith as hard as it is. Although it isn't my place to judge, the bible explains that those who are unashamed will be blessed.
I think Matt's faith was shaken from the depression and he's still not 100% about it right now but he still like believes in God and stuff but I think he still needs some time to think about it. Also I think that he is a shy kind of guy and he expresses his feelings better in song. Therefore, what you must take into consideration is his latest work, which is what he has been feeling recently. That will tell you what he thinks :)
i met them after their show on Warped tour and theyre the most inspiratoinal and nice people I've ever met. Been a fan since I was little, will be a fan until im old.
I like this interview. They've really grown up a lot and are more mature with their music and are more open minded about things instead of trying to be preachy all the time.
Oh man,.... I remember the days of warped tour, went once in Indiana, I feel like Noblesville.... Good charlotta, reel big fish, new found glory, all the favs....even met wee-man! Great times..... I remember I was telling my boyfriend I had always wanted to try to crowd surf, haha and these two guys turned around n was like here we go ....haha so they tossed me up, and I actually made it all the way up to the front, and they threw me over the gate...I was right in front of GC the ones I went for haha....and I got to stand there n just stare in awe....for about a min until this huge security guard came up to me and was pointing to the crowd, telling me to walk back, I just stood there....he picked me up and took me back! 😂 15 driving to Indy with my 16 yr old boyfriend, bc I had my mother convinced his whole family was going with us ..... Wow the stupid things I did.....🤔🤦🤷🏽♀️ To be young, dumb, and broke again....well still broke,...but ya know...❤️
Seems to me that most of the people denouncing him ARE Christians, which means you understand who Jesus is and why he came to die. However, to the unchurched, the hurting, the broken, those who have never known him on a personal level, he gave a very down to earth explanation. We use the terms "Saved", "Savior", "King" because that is who we know him to be, and we love him for it. But for the non-christian, to know him as a friend is much more personable. Check yourself.
Don't judge people. if you heard something that seems wrong to you and you want to say something about it, better keep them to your self and you could pray for them instead. (remember their song "Bite my tongue") We cant JUDGE. we never knew and we'll ever know Gods plans for them.
Wow, I use to disregard this band based solely on their genre, but now I see how stupid judging them, or anyone, for that matter, can be. His music and lyrics are real and honest, and that's something that I believe everyone should be able to appreciate. Not to mention that Matt seems to be a great guy and a good role-model for those who may find their self struggling with things like depression or self-conscious feelings: you choose to be happy.
Allow me to be a little clearer: I didn't say that CHRISTIANS are the problem with the world, the problem is the people who call themselves Christian but sit there judging other Christians and being hypocritical. Jesus didn't point fingers (except at the Pharisees which were the pompous political Christians of his day), he said to love each other, and put others before yourself. As soon as Christians start actually being Christ-followers and not Church-ians, the world will finally see the light.
God has been starting to convict me about how much I care about celebrities' spiritual lives versus my own or my friends or families. I think that we should care only to make sure their music is helping our own spiritual lives and to pray for both of them as brothers in Christ. We don't know Theissen or Hoopes's spiritual life based on this interview partially because it's just an interview(it could just be Hoopes is more articulate than Theissen) and partially because it's an old interview and their relationships with God could be better or worse than when this interview happened. With that being said, if it just so happens Theissen is struggling with his faith(it's quite a jump to say he's not a Christian,) I'm glad he has Hoopes. Based on this and other interviews(like the one where Theissen says Hoopes takes his kids to church every Sunday, not to be legalistic but it could be fruit of a deeper faith,) Hoopes seems to be really serious about his faith. In conclusion, we should care more about our own and our friends and families' faiths and those who are personally closely to Theissen are the ones who should care the most about his.
I just want to point out that nearly ANYONE would be put-off by a direct question about what they think of Jesus unless they were expecting to be asked that question. I am confident that Theissen's love for Jesus is deeper than some neatly packaged words. That being said, I feel like if you are going to be a Christian who creates art that people consume you should convert your motivations into words long before you even think about being interviewed.
I agree. He also seems a little sociably awkward. He seemed nervous. I truly believe he is a devout Christian. It's just more comfortable for him to sing it. :)
Very good interview. All that matters is that your content with your life and with what you have. Don't pay attention to materialistic things, focus on Jesus and you'll be much happier !!
That same chapter of Leviticus also bans eating raw meat, eating fruit off a tree the first 3 years it's planted, and shaving your beard. That section of Leviticus was a time sensitive segment. Also, it doesn't ban tattoos in the modern day sense of the word. Back then they would cut their bodies in order to worship/commune with the dead.
their music has religious tones but not being a believer doesn't take away from enjoying their music. they don't shove it down your throat. I enjoyed it as a full fledged christian and I still enjoy their music now that I don't consider myself one anymore.
@Galitzen724 I completely agree. Relient K has always been one of my favorites and I've always been one to defend their faith, but this revealed a lot about how he is afraid to offend anyone. It's okay to pursue a more secular label to reach a broader audience but when you're asked a straight up question like that you can't shy away from that.
His answer wasn't bad, it was just awkward, he was trying to explain his personal relationship with Jesus and didn't really know how to get it out. I can understand that
I thought their descriptions were a little bit lacking too, at first. Then I thought about it and realized that their music speaks for itself. More than likely, as many have pointed out, they wanted to be able to reach out to all of their fans, not just the Christian ones, with what they said. Bring the listeners in first, then hit them with the Message in the music. And, if you have ever listened to the "Unknown" song in "Two Lefts," you know that Matt isn't the best conversationalist. Haha.
Depresses me to see one of my band idols have a such a simple view of Christ... he wrote all these songs, claiming to have a strong faith and relationship and understanding of Christ.... But Jesus way way more than just a cool dude or a guy that would be a great example of how we should live our lives. Jesus is/ was a savior that gave everything in order for us to receive the kingdom of heaven someday.... why is it so hard to say that? I love matt and matt.. i just hope they truly understand !!!
I feel for Matt trying to answer a question like that; he may be very strong in his faith, but coming up with a description of the Savior in a few sentences is not easy for everyone. I would also have struggled to answer definitively, right there on the spot.
@TeaPartier22 I totally agree-very nicely put, by the way. I was a little unsettled at Matt T's response as well. Do I hate him and Relient K now? Absolutely not. Am I disappointed? Yes.
I definitely feel like Hoopes countered Theissen in his answer about Jesus. Theissen ways basically saying he was a cool dude, and Hoopes says you can't just say that. You can see it in his face as Hoopes is talking, like he feels uncomfortable.
I disagree, I think both understand eachother very well, and Hoopes built upon what had already been said. Neither statement was actually a contradiction of the other, they were complimentary. I think Hoopes understood that listeners might interpret Theissen's answer a bit differently, and Hoopes took it upon himself to clarify the message to avoid confusion. I also feel this way because Relient K's lyrics in many songs indicate the general consensus within the band that Jesus is the saviour.
@th3burn1nator I completely agree. I've love gotten the impression that MT has struggled with faith along side depression and though I love him as always, I believe he wanted to but could not bring himself to say that he believes Jesus is the divine Son of God and savior of all who will believe.
I didn't interpret it as Theissen not be a Christian anymore, but caught off guard and nervous by the question. Like others have said, Hoopes covered for him.
I don't care if this music was about jesus or just some random guy, all i care about is how it sounds and how i can relate. I could care shit that you think they don't believe as much as you do. Don't just judge someone on wether they do or don't believe.
It can be really hard to say everything that is really in your heart on camera when a question is thrown at you. He may not be as quick as Tebow with those answers, but I think he knows his Jesus
If you listen to it again, that "says" doesn't mean this person doubts Jesus. It means he's giving the perception of Jesus as a person that he gets from Jesus' *own words* - the parables, talking to the woman at the well, driving the moneoylenders out of the temple, etc. - beyond just glowing descriptions given by writers of the Gospels. Personally, I think that's pretty cool, focusing on Jesus' personality - and he's answering the interviewer's question.
To those people doubting whether Matt's a christian or not because of what his answer was; it's very normal for christians, when asked about their faith, to back away and try to avoid the question. It's our nature which makes us feel ashamed, or that we have to explain ourselves, or accommodate for the views of unbelievers. It doesn't mean he isn't a christian :)
We do not always succeed at representing our true selves to others. Just a couple weeks ago, I was casually talking with a co-worker, and he asked me what I have been reading lately. The Spirit prompted me to tell him I have nearly finished Esther, the Old Testament book. Instead, what did I tell him? I told him I picked up some counseling books recently because I like to help people with addictions -- which is entirely true -- but I feel I did not obey the promptings of God. We all fall down, but it is whether you get back up again that matters.
Last I checked Matt is still alive and breathing. Its our struggles that make us stronger. If it wasnt for his struggle he wouldn't have written such a great CD. And why the caps?
@dafterlife I THINK he was using the word if as an example ya know? it sounded like he struggled with words at the beginning, but i think he sort of straightened it out at the end
The good news in all of this though is that God forgives and loves us! I sin just as much as he does, but I try not to flaunt my sin to an audience. I ask for forgiveness when I screw up. (not that it makes me better than him) We can all be forgiven so nothing is lost here. Let's hope he gets through these rough spots and tries to live the way God wants us to live. He seems like a genuinely good guy and I'll be praying for him.
Actually, something that's interesting is there's another interview(I think you can find it on TH-cam, it's called "Matt Hoopes on the business decision to be a Christian band" or something like that..the thumbnail has the Collapsible Lung cover) where Hoopes talks about the fact that while he and Theissen are still believers in Christ, they are careful how they talk about about their faith because they never felt comfortable with the whole idea of a Christian genre and don't want to be pigeonholed. He says that's why Theissen may seem flippant about his faith in some interviews, not because of what's in his heart. Now, if you disagree with their approach and think they should be 100% comfortable with the Christian band label, feel free to be upset but at least be upset about what the truth of the situation is if you're going to be upset. I know Hoopes is very active on the internet, so I think his comments in the other interview is a response to all of your posts.
@TeaPartier22 Your view on Matt T. is completely spot on. I was extremely disappointed to hear his answer because it did not seem like the Matt T. that wrote all those beautiful songs! Rock On And God Bless!
I love RK ever since the beginning. Look at the lyrics of their songs throughout the years, Matt obviously loves Jesus. He is human though, again listening to some of the music, I feel like he has had up and downs in his life. Who hasn't? Don't judge lest ye be judged. Only God can see his heart. To me this interview mad RK a little more human to me instead of just being music.
@TeaPartier22 dude, thats exactly how i feel, especially about their album "forget and not slow down". i hope its only a phase and the chrstian lyrics are coming back :( but now first there the karaoke album...
I feel like the Matt Theisson I know from the Relient K CDs would have a better grasp on why he's Christian. This doesn't mean he's falling away, but that he might not have a good choice of words on camera, either because the question was unexpected or because he was nervous (or both lol)
I hope both of them have a stronger relationship with Christ now since filming this interview. I've been listening to them for 10+ years and started listening to them when i was 10 because of the Christian music. It was uplifting and encouraging. This indeed disappointed me..
I feel like Hoopes, while he didn't necessarily say that he personally believes, said something a lot less wishy-washy than Thiessen. Hoopes made the point that either you put Jesus as your savior, exactly what he said he was, or take him as a liar or a crazy person. Theissen said that too, but he went with "Yeah, I'd totally hang out with him." They were definitely making a clear point that Jesus is a bigger deal than some chill hippie from a long time ago who I guess you could look up to.
I think that "what is your perception of Jesus" is a very hard question to be asked on the spot like that so people shouldnt give matt such a hard time. Its a huge question and a very difficult one to answer
The way they responded to the question, about Jesus, made me feel like they were afraid of being judged. I'm not judging his faith I'm just saying if you are a christian stand firm! Don't be afraid of being a christian! If your reading this check out the band "For Today" they are firm in there faith proclaiming the word of god! They can show you what I'm trying to put in words. Look up the lead vocalist named Mattie Montgomery. He has so many meaningful speeches about Christianity.
Sometimes we think of Christianity as a religion, however its a relationship with Jesus. If Matt considers Jesus a friend, than he has a relationship with him.
Hi! I actually just got back from a mission trip in Illinois, and happened to see that I have top comment on here, which is crazy! Anyways, I see exactly what you're saying. I commented a while ago, and it seems like I'm stronger in my faith now. Point is, Jesus is real and alive, but I can see both sides of the coin. Have a good day.
I think he was just giving a surface idea. But you are right, he should stay firm in the faith. Being a christian isn't easy but you can be a christian in any situation you are in.
I love Relient K. All I can say is that my response would not have been Matt Theissens'. I agree, a musician with a wide variety of people in their fan base must be aware of non-Christian viewers and not present a view that would be hostile towards people of different faiths. However, many seem to equate a clear statement of Christian belief as automatically "beating someone over the head with a Bible insensitively". If Matt T. had been clear, why would there be so much disagreement over this?
Even the lead singer of Of Mice & Men (Austin) is more firm about his faith. Look up his interview with this guy, he's very confident and open about who Jesus is to him :)
His face lit up when he was asked about Jesus. I think his answer was meant to be relatable to the average warped tour audience who may or may not be Christian. Plus it's hard to put how you feel about Jesus in a sound byte. Let's cut him some slack.

Why does it matter though if you like the music and the message of the music?
Robert W Livings Because I don't want a messenger delivering me a message they don't believe. Not saying he doesn't, just wondering.
But isn't that what most evangelical preachers do? Religion is all about money these days..
Therefore with music, if you like a song listen to it. Who cares of its origins if you enjoy it 😊
Maybe he just got nervous and didn't realize the interview was a 'Christian' and tried to make it sound simple...?
Everyone go look up C.S. Lewis's "Liar, Lunatic, Lord" argument. That's what I think Matt is referencing. He's saying that if Jesus is who He says He is, then it's everything. If not, He's either a liar or a lunatic. He's saying that there's no gray area. As a man who's seen Relient K live multiple times and met members of the band, I'd say that Matt isn't a very eloquent speaker. People need to stop judging and trust that the Lord knows Matt's heart.
Oh I love the honesty and perspective. Very powerful!!
That will tell you what he thinks :)
i love how matt was like he was a really good guy. and then the other guy is like, you can't just say he's a cool dude.
i mean its a little more of a decision than that.
I really love what they said at the end. Contentment. That was beautiful and true. I need to follow that advice for myself.
i met them after their show on Warped tour and theyre the most inspiratoinal and nice people I've ever met. Been a fan since I was little, will be a fan until im old.
Matt I love your music! You're a huge staple to christian youth!
15 driving to Indy with my 16 yr old boyfriend, bc I had my mother convinced his whole family was going with us .....

Let's just slowly return to only listening a few songs
Curl up and die by them, Relient K, it's amazing, might be one of my favorites
Don't judge people. if you heard something that seems wrong to you and you want to say something about it, better keep them to your self and you could pray for them instead. (remember their song "Bite my tongue") We cant JUDGE. we never knew and we'll ever know Gods plans for them.
Apparently Matt T. has trouble with words when it's not to music. Poor guy, under pressure. I LOVE YOU RELIENT K! ♥
She was also a christian artist at that time, and her name was Katy Hudson i believe..
I am entirely atheist but still love Relient K and their message!
Don't pay attention to materialistic things, focus on Jesus and you'll be much happier !!
i love his answer about jesus. its honest and true.
"What happened to the salvation you claimed? It breaks my heart to see how much you've changed."
-What have you been doing lately?
Nathaniel Byers :(
matt theissen, I LOVE U'RE VOICE!!!!
their music has religious tones but not being a believer doesn't take away from enjoying their music. they don't shove it down your throat.
Song Name: "Curl Up And Die" Album: "The Bird And The Bee Sides" (2008)
I hope, that will be some proshot video from Warped Tour with Relient K :D
His answer wasn't bad, it was just awkward, he was trying to explain his personal relationship with Jesus and didn't really know how to get it out. I can understand that
love the stash Matt. still as good as it was in college. ;)
I'm proud of the guy who interviewed them, disappointed with relient k and matt theissen :(
...i'm gonna pray for them all.
relient k es de esas bandas que predican una esperanza en las personas DIOS BENDIGA SU MINISTERIO RELIENT K ROCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” - Epictetus
I agree, I was hoping for a more clear answer, but then again I don't know their hearts.
Wow, I like these guys. Also you gotta love that 3ds sign in the background.
Last I checked Matt is still alive and breathing. Its our struggles that make us stronger. If it wasnt for his struggle he wouldn't have written such a great CD.
And why the caps?
i was only gonna watch this for a little bit, but i stuck with it because i couldn't stand to turn off the song in the background :3
"Before I even speak, you let me know I am understood"
"natural things"...thiessen gets lit every day
He is my savior. And so thank you Lord.
And even in hard times rich or poor.
Please let God be the roller of your life.
Good good interview, cool to see what they have going on in thier head and what they believe in, haven't seen them every answer those questions :D
@TeaPartier22 Your view on Matt T. is completely spot on. I was extremely disappointed to hear his answer because it did not seem like the Matt T. that wrote all those beautiful songs! Rock On And God Bless!
I wish they had gone more in depth too, but I do like Hoopes' response :)
Aww he said he can't complain ;)
They were both almost directly quoting Mere Christianity by CS Lewis.
Being a christian isn't easy but you can be a christian in any situation you are in.
can someone tell me if he is still a Christian? It's hard for me to tell after what he's just said!
And besides that, the huge smile on matts face when the dude said Jesus. : ) says a lot. I think so anyways.
Sad that they don't seem as into Jesus as they used to be. Hope they come back.
I got way excited when the guy said, "Yea I believe in the Savior!" :)!!!
I don't think he was prepared for the question so like Matt H, said you cant just put it into a few words. I think he was just caught off guard
Even the lead singer of Of Mice & Men (Austin) is more firm about his faith. Look up his interview with this guy, he's very confident and open about who Jesus is to him :)
this has helped my alot
