I very recently did a study of this particular drawing! I had so much fun doing it. I really enjoyed seeing your process and result. I used graphite instead of charcoal. I shy away form it because I feel like it's messy but you're tempting me to give it a try.
Wow. Great work. I found out through genealogical research that Sargent and I are distant cousins. Too bad I have zero artistic ability 😂 Thanks for the video.
Thanks. I've never used charcoal but have bought some and will take the plunge soon. I agree about a millimetre or so can make all the difference between getting a likeness or not. I think you did a pretty good job: I think in the Sargent portrait, the sitter is looking at the viewer, whereas in yours, he is looking into the distance: a good example of a millimetre or less making all the difference.
Audio goes a bit bonkers at 1:35 - bear with me for 10 seconds 😂
Nice work! Sargent is my favorite.
Haha me too!
Love this!

Great point! Especially tricky when drawing so small. Good luck with the charcoal experiments!
Thank you this is really helpful
❤❤
Great demo!
I also suspect that Sargent very subtly exaggerated the character of his subjects.
Great video. Could you tell me which 'overlay' app you used? Thanks.
Thanks! It’s called the overlay cut out photo editor. It’s free and does the job but you do have to put up with a bit of advert spamming 😄
what is the app
it’s the overlay cut out video editor app - available on iOS
