      Erm, he is the student and basically produced a copy of a an original, around 3 inches big, in 25 minutes. He also raps at the end of his videos. Lets get a grip now, shall we?

    I managed to also see JSS charcoal portraits at the Morgan library in October 2019, and was really struck with how efficient he was with his tones. Having you break down the techniques even further is really helpful and valuable to my studies!

    I looked for a Caesar Santos drawing vlog because I was frustrated that I wasn't getting the results I wanted in my drawing, this video pushed me to move my ass and keep working at it. I wish I could be an apprentice of Caesar's, and all the great modern artists, what a dream that is.

    How can anyone dislike this video?? If you don't like the video don't watch it! Let those of us who admire some masterwork choose to like this video. People are haters!!

      JF F oh, tiny brained and small minded is far from this guy. I gave my opinion and YOU came to this thread to cry and soapbox over the word “haters” stating my opinion so in the end I’m not the intolerant one. There are people who go and dislike videos just because they are jealous and for u to defend them, ur looking pretty suspect right now which explains why u felt like u go SJW. Lol So kick rocks w/ that SJW lingo buddy.

    I know from his biography that Sargent traveled as a young person with his family throughout Europe and made studies of master works in museums. It is remarkable to me how Cesar is connected to the history of the old masters through the seminal process of learning from the past to prepare to make something new. Enjoyed the video .

    Fantastic to watch you develop this in real time and to listen to your thoughts as you do. Your initial tones in the shadow shapes are exactly how Sargent would have started a watercolor sketch. ❤️ So great. I wonder if the people who sat for these portraits ever imagined that their images would be hanging in museums for the world to study? 😉

    • @sharonoddlyenough

      I was thinking along the same lines, working from light to dark reminded me of watercolour. I think charcoal would have a similar process, too

    Cesar’s ability to nail the proportions always strikes me. Getting your marks in largely the right place on the first try goes a long way towards having a successful drawing. It is a difficult skill to ingrain . The other thing he really does well in these quick sketches is apply a solid value structure that holds up at distance. Shape and value folks shape and value, it’s fundamental

    Now this guy makes sense , he always has . Not like these pretentious artists that say nothing. Santos is a master that sees this art as a science, and has never lost his enthusiasm. He is down to earth and continues to learn , because even masters continue to learn , myself included. He is also a great teacher because he can explain complex aspects in simple terms.
    That is the mark of a good teacher.

    I love drawing this way. It really is like painting with a stick or pencil, filling in local tones and working to the bolder details, and the result looks classically academic. I believe it's how Sargent himself characteristically worked, considering his regard of values, the confidence that highlights would reveal themselves, and the situation of features.

  • @MrLopez-gb9hq
    @MrLopez-gb9hq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video. I learned a lot. It's also awesome to see someone with a completely different style than sargents draw one of his drawings. So many artist want to draw like him but that's like trying to sing with another person's vocal cords. It's not gonna be the same.

  • @raynoladominguez4730
    @raynoladominguez4730 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Great video. Sargent has always been one of my favorites. I did the same thing, any master that provoked something within me; I studied them. First to analyze what it was about their piece that I was drawn to and then how this was achieved by the other artist. I copied and studied until I felt comfortable with the technique and then I attempted to reproduce this aspect and it into my own pieces, no matter how minute the step. And so, as a result the personal techniques and style of my artwork is just a marriage, a mashup, a compilation, the offspring of many small nuances of art that I admired enough to study and become intimate with. Does this make me an unimaginative fraud or analytical artist? You are a master, I think that you are amazing.

    • @sharonoddlyenough
      @sharonoddlyenough 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imo, that process is what all artists go through. 'Steal like an artist' You master techniques so your imagination is not bound by limitations of your execution. Keep going!
