I think step 3 is so so important. The more I practice the more I realize that shapes are everything! I feel like as long as I understand the shape of the subject, I can draw anything.
Spot on. And the basic shapes are the most important of all: circle/sphere; square (rectangle)/cube (block); triangle/cone. I've been drawing for nigh on 10 years and I've found if I can boil down an object into basic component shapes, I'm heading in the right direction. Super comment!
I've tried your method and it's been giving a bit more positive results than other methods I've been studying. Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
Thank you very much!! I'm having problems with this, so this is why I asked for it and why I think this is very useful for everyone. Learning to see and a lot of practice is the key imho. Thank you once again.
First time in your channel. You explain very well and I found this tutorial to be very useful. I'm definitely going to apply some the tips you gave. P.s: You have a very soothing a beautiful voice.
You are very talented and I'm stunned at how well you captured his likeness with such a beautiful rendering style. On aside, the official term for that reference line is called a 'datum'.
Kim Jung Gi had me convinced that I could one day just wing it and draw perfect faces from imagination in any angle :’) I’m learning your method now, thanks for sharing
Wow I'm definitely gonna try this method, I've been having a lot of trouble achieving likeness in my portraits using loomis construction alone. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. I always watch your videos and I am learning looms method. I was watching and sketching with you and my measurements is always off. Thank you for explanation.
This looks fantastic! I’m curious what drew you to the block-in method of starting vs something like a loomis method? I’m hoping to spend the coming year on portraits and was wondering whether I should try using some “method” or go in just with measurements.
thanks! well I think a 2d approach like visual block in is a good one if you want to practice doing measurement and if working from a photo. I find I’m generally more accurate using this method so it is my default a little bit but I absolutely don’t stick to it rigidly. I like 3d methods like structural drawings too - I find these better when working from imagination and sometimes with live models. my advice would be to try a bunch of methods and see what works - it differs day to day and person to person so having a few different methods you can lean on depending on how you’re feeling is no bad thing
I love your style! How do you choose the direction and weight of your lines/crosshatching to keep the sketch clean and prevent it from looking overworked?
Thankyou! I don't think about it too much to be honest! I think it's moved beyond something I think about consciously to subconcious/muscle memory for the most part. In terms of how to get there - it's mostly practice stacking up. Doing master copies of artists who have great control of hatching is a great practice as I think it shortcuts the process a little - but mostly it just comes after time. Dave Malen (contemporary artist), and sketches by historical artists like Sargent, Durer and Da Vinci are all good for master studies.
Excellent endeavor.... Best wishes from India. One request. Can you please upload one or two tutorial videos for the beginners to improve line quality and perspective. Few practices which are the foundation of drawing Thanks
I struggle keeping my lines straight and restraining from details. I always want to start putting curves in and then jump into the fun, detailed parts right away.
Hi Katie, I watch and learn a great deal from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & experience. I wondered if you’ve ever drawn or would draw as a demo a handsome middle eastern man with Arab features around 35-40 years old. I am trying to create something here but am having trouble capturing the particular Arab features on the page. I keep getting a Mediterranean looking man. Can you help with that?
I think step 3 is so so important. The more I practice the more I realize that shapes are everything! I feel like as long as I understand the shape of the subject, I can draw anything.
100%! And if the foundation is solid the rest just flows :)

i love how tamino is used mostly as a drawing reference alongside being an incredibly talented artist with a godly voice
He's a favourite among artists on Pinterest
It’s the best tutorial I’ve watched, hands down. Thank you for posting this…
Thank you! I still think that capturing an accurate likeness in a drawing that looks lively is akin to magic - it's enthralling to watch.
Best tutorial I’ve seen thank you so much! I’ve subscribed to you because this was super helpful

😅 I don’t think anyone is quite like Kim Jung Gi 🙇🏻♀️ glad you enjoyed the video!
@@katiemaeveart haha unfortunately I was under the delusion that enough practice with construction would help me imitate a fraction of his power 😅
Please do more of these! Your technique is so cool

😮😮 you have a TH-cam channel!

all I can suggest is find a good reference and work from that
what is the app you used to map out the persons face?
in this case procreate. but there are other overlay apps too - I have a video dedicated to it if you want to check it out 😃
I wish I could draw something as beautiful as this, I am still a beginner and my skills are very basic
Please excuse the very elementary question but what pencil are you using; the brand and hardness? Thank you. Lovely model and sketch!
@@gayesekula thankyou! It’s a blackwing matte. Equivalent would be a good quality 4b/5b pencil
@@katiemaeveart Thank you so much!
amazing you are the next picasso!
Wow
is that a Blackwing 602?
blackwing matte 👍
