One of the most common spinal conditions related to school children is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The most common symptom is a postural deviation due to the unnatural forces that get introduced into the body. The body's overall symmetry is disrupted, and the most common thing we see is uneven shoulders, hips out of alignment, rib arching or deformities, uneven waistline, and arms and legs that seem to hang at different lengths and distances from the body.
There are two treatment options for AIS; traditional treatment is typically watching and waiting, may involve a brace, and traditionally funnels patients toward surgery or spinal fusion. Conservative or corrective treatment involves a proactive treatment approach that treats the curve as soon as the curve is diagnosed to try to counteract the natural progression that occurs during growth. Conservative treatment tends to integrate multiple treatments and discipline to reduce the curve.
Traditional bracing is the most common bracing method used. The most common brace is the Boston brace. The design hasn't changed much over the years. The goal of these braces is to try to slow down progression; they work via a 3-point pressure system with a squeezing effect.
Conservative braces are corrective in manner. There are different types, including the scolibrace, whose goal is to reduce the magnitude of the scoliosis. Since the brace is actively trying to reduce the size of the curve, the brace becomes easier to wear. The key to bracing is the design, fitting, and management of the person wearing the brace.
Scoliosis rehabilitation is helping improve flexibility, home therapy, and corrective exercises with a corrective brace. They complement each other and allow the best reduction in patients with scoliosis.
At The Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer conservative treatment options for children with scoliosis and a good scoliosis brace in combination with therapy and rehabilitation prescribed for each unique patient and curve type.
