Ah, this explains why although I cannot wear heels in general, my "ballroom dancing" shoes (heels) are a dream. As you point out though, the soles should not be worn outside; I always change into them at the closest point to indoors as I can. I did not know there were reproduction shoes out there, so I may look into a pair for more daily wear. I am so glad you mentioned them.

I have had the ccobbler change the soles in some of my dancing shoes.

@@MiljaHahto Yes, I did that too. The leather started coming up on one pair, so my husband recently had to glue it back down. I haven't been dancing in them since. My favorite dancing shoes are my leather soled cowboy boots, which have the advantage of being able to be worn outdoors, but just don't go with everything.

This is one of the reason I always buy Pleasers (the stripper brand) if I need pumps, because pretty much all of their 4'-5'-6' pumps have the heel positioned under the center of the ankle as you've said. Their "Vanity" line is my particular favorite!

Very interesting. Helps me to remember that clothes, and shoes, aren't supposed to make one uncomfortable in them. As someone with feet problems, wearing modern heels is both a fantasy and nightmare. I'm going to be getting some American Duchess shoes in the near future, so I'll update this comment after I've broken them in.

Now I understand why I could never wear high heels, the pain in my arches when just standing is extreme. The rigid soles f many modern shoes, especially those one-piece molded plastic ones, and a huge problem, too.

True! Also for some reason if there is any arch support it always seems to be angled wrong 🤷

Thanks so much for this interesting video! Aside from historical fashion, I've had a longstanding interest in minimalist/barefoot footwear and natural movement. It really fascinates me how natural movement/barefoot footwear and earlier Western shoes both address very similar concerns of allowing the foot to move in a natural way that supports the entire column of the body. They definitely use very different technologies/approaches to accomplish it though! As well as differing drastically in aesthetics, haha. There's certainly been a greater variety of fashion-forward and office appropriate minimalist/barefoot shoes come onto the market since I first became interested in natural movement 10-15 years ago, but I really had given up thinking I'd ever wear a heel again. Can't see myself giving up my leather Vevo boots on the daily, but it's heartening to know I may find more comfortable options for heels in reproduction historical footwear!

Thank you so much for mentioning that fashion industry ( including shoe one) is mostly managed by men. I’ll never understand why they are so hyped up if they don’t actually favor women nor help them to have stylish but useful items.
    Have a great day 🌸🌿🙏🏻

Not only does positioning the heel like so look more comfortable, but I think they are much more attractive.
Also something I notice is that when you look at vintage Ferragamo shoes (he was known to be very concerned with fit and comfort despite his crazy designs and he presumably taught his daughter who took over in the sixties) if the heel is back farther they tend to have a more robust, thicker shank. They have a repro line called “Ferragamo creations”. Not that I personally know the comfort of them, because I don’t have money lol, but you can get secondhand pairs off of online thrift stores for under $100.
Also in the 20th cent. steel shanks became super popular (it was a huge selling point, lots of shoes boast steel shanks and combination lasts (this meant the back hugged more where the toe box was wider)) I think people developed some hubris around it however 😅

No matter how robust it is, walking with shoes that have the heel at the very back, is awkward. Good heels do allow you to take the steps with heel first.

I also find the modern high-heeled shoes very stiff, which makes them harder to walk in. I want some flexibility in the toe box, to be able to use my feet properly to keep balance in unexpected situations like somebody bouncing on me.

Very interesting! Do you think it's purely an aesthetic change, or would the newer styles be easier/cheaper to manufacture?

    • @sewthroughtime
      @sewthroughtime  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Honestly mostly bc the designers are a) not wearing them b) not shoemakers c) even really considering comfort, just style and cost and whatever happens to be trendy

This is super informative! Also explains why heels hurt my feet so much after wearing them too long. I own a pair of AD shoes as well though after a while they also hurt cuz my feet slide back and forth in them (might be wrong size on my part) but the heel is incredibly comfortable! One of these days I’ll buy another pair though lol

Yeah it's a very important that the shoe hugs the ball of the foot to keep the shoe in place.

I’ll definitely keep this in mind when I buy another pair of shoes

Thank you for this, the point about supporting that second arch behind the toes was very interesting in particular - I have very wide feet, particularly across the ball of my foot and my toes, which has made finding shoes very difficult. Factoring in the height of the toe box is something I hadn't considered before, but will now. I really like historical shoes, and while I am not a fan of heels generally, the historical style heel you showed here is an exception - they look so elegant if nothing else!

It really is a game changer when arches are well supported and heels balanced 😊

Hello Maria & thank you for this video. All of your videos are so well done but I found this one to be fascinating & educational. It answered a lot of questions & makes total sense. I have a new perspective when buying footwear that might actually be comfortable.

Heels give women the crooked big toe.

I thought that narrow toes were what caused that?
